Abstract:Nitrogen-containing heterocycles are especially considered "privileged" structural scaffolds for the development of new drugs. However, traditional methods of organic synthesis are mainly based on thermal cycloaddition reaction; thus, the exploration of new strategies for the rapid assembly of N-heterocycles under mild conditions is highly desirable. Here, we developed a new method that visible light along with 1 mol % cercosporin, which is one of the perylenequinonoid pigments with excellent properties of photosensitization and can be easily produced by a new isolated endophytic fungus Cercospora sp. JNU001 strain with high yield through microbial fermentation, catalyzes the synthesis of 1,2,3-thiadiazoles and 1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridazines by a photocatalytic process with good regioselectivity and broad functional-group compatibility under mild conditions. Thus, a bridge between microbial fermentation and organic photocatalysis for the construction of nitrogen-containing heterocycles was set up in a sustainable, environmentally friendly manner.

Abstract:Nickel-catalyzed cycloaddition of alkynes and 2-sulfobenzoic anhydrides gives highly functionalized thiochromenones. The reaction undergoes a deoxygenative rather than decarbonylative pathway and shows advantages of an excellent isolated yield (up to 95%), high reaction efficiency, and high regioselectivity. As one of the resulted products, 2,3-di(triphenylamine)-thiolchromenone possesses a typical aggregation-induced emission property and emits efficient near-infrared fluorescence.

Abstract:Most of the fluorescent molecules among organic -conjugated materials show blue or green emission in the solid phase but few of them emit red-shifted visible and near-infrared light in the material science. To create molecules emitting for this feature, two π-conjugated oxazol-5-one derivatives containing donor (OCH 3 ) and acceptor groups (NO 2 ) were synthesized. Their optical and charge-transport properties were investigated through experimental and theoretical methods including the single crystal X-ray crystallography, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, photophysical studies and Density Functional Theory (DFT), respectively. In addition, FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements were performed. According to our results, both molecules may provide the significant pathway of development of long wavelength visible and red emissive features in solid phase with the aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) properties particularly in the fields of OLEDs, optical communication, defence and bioimaging.

Abstract:We report a step-economic strategy for the direct synthesis of novel polycyclic N-heterocycle-fused naphthoquinones by merging intramolecular oxidative coupling and cascade [4 + 2] cycloaddition. In the protocol, mechanistic investigations suggest that the cascade reaction involves the intermediate spiro polycyclic N-heterocycles and [4 + 2] cycloaddition processes. This protocol is featured with moderate to excellent yields, wide substrate scope, and divergent structures of products. In addition, the photophysical properties of the synthesized products were evaluated. These products exhibit interesting fluorescence properties, and surprisingly, the compounds have the ability to selectively recognize trifluoroacetic acid.

Abstract:An efficient method to prepare 3-functionalized oxetanes and azetidines has been realized by fluorocyclization of readily available 2-azidoallyl/2-alkoxyallyl alcohols and amines. Notably, this is the first example applying the fluorocyclization strategy to construct four-membered heterocycles. Abstract:The donor-acceptor design is a classic method of synthesizing new fluorescent molecules. In this study, a series of new fluorescent compounds (1-10) were synthesized based on 2-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-quinazoline acceptor and various amino donors. The fluorescent emissions of1-10cover the spectrum from 414 nm to 597 nm in cyclohexane solutions with various amino donors on 4- or 7-positions of quinazoline. Ultimately, compounds1and2presented the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (QY) over 80%, while compound10provided the largest Stokes shift (161 nm) in cyclohexane. Most of them have strong emissions in aggregated states such as in nanoparticles, in powders, in crystals and in films. Mechanochromic properties were observed for compounds1,2,4and7. Furthermore, blue OLEDs were fabricated by using compound2or7as the active layer.

Abstract:A series of new naphthalimide and phenothiazine-based push–pull systems (NPI-PTZ1–5), in which we structurally modulate the oxidation state of the sulfur atom in the thiazine ring, i.e., S(II), S(IV), and S(VI), was designed and synthesized by the Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The effect of the sulfur oxidation state on the spectral, photophysical, and electrochemical properties was investigated. The steady-state absorption and emission results show that oxygen functionalization greatly improves the optical (absorption coefficient and fluorescence efficiency) and nonlinear optical (hyperpolarizability) features. The cyclic voltammetry experiments and the quantum mechanical calculations suggest that phenothiazine is a stronger electron donor unit relative to phenothiazine-5-oxide and phenothiazine-5,5-dioxide, while the naphthalimide is a strong electron acceptor in all cases. The advanced ultrafast spectroscopic measurements, transient absorption, and broadband fluorescence up conversion give insight into the mechanism of photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer. A planar intramolecular charge transfer (PICT) and highly fluorescent excited state are populated for the oxygen-functionalized molecules NPI-PTZ2,3 and NPI-PTZ5; on the other hand, a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state is produced upon photoexcitation of the oxygen-free derivatives NPI-PTZ1 and NPI-PTZ4, with the fluorescence being thus significantly quenched. These results prove oxygen functionalization as a new effective synthetic strategy to tailor the photophysics of phenothiazine-based organic materials for different optoelectronic applications. While oxygen-functionalized compounds are highly fluorescent and promising active materials for current-to-light conversion in organic light-emitting diode devices, oxygen-free systems show very efficient photoinduced ICT and may be employed for light-to-current conversion in organic photovoltaics.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:An efficient iodine-catalyzed [3+3+1] annulation for the construction of dihydrooxepine scaffolds with quinoline units was developed. This strategy involves a seven-membered dihydrooxepine with a broad substrate scope through a formal three-component tandem reaction. Further derivation of the target product produced a trioxabicycle scaffold, which formed the basic core of natural products and pharmaceutical molecules.

Abstract:2-N-aminoquinazolines were prepared by consecutive SN Ar functionalization. X-ray structures display the nitrogen lone pair of the 2-N-morpholino group in conjugation with the electron deficient quinazoline core and thus representing electronic push-pull systems. 2-N-aminoquinazolines show a positive solvatochromism and are fluorescent in solution and in solid state with quantum yields up to 0.73. Increase in electron donor strength of the 2-amino substituent causes a red-shift of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) band (300-400 nm); whereas the photoluminescence emission maxima (350-450 nm) is also red-shifted significantly along with an enhancement in photoluminescence efficiency. HOMO-LUMO energies were estimated by a combination of electrochemical and photophysical methods and correlate well to those obtained by computational methods. ICT properties are theoretically attributed to an excitation to Rydberg-MO in SAC-CI method, which can be interpreted as n-π* excitation. 7-Amino-2-N-morpholino-4-methoxyquinazoline responds to acidic conditions with significant increases in photoluminescence intensity revealing a new turn-on/off fluorescence probe.

Abstract:Vinyl radicals were generated from 3-iodoflavones under a mercury lamp and tandem cyclization reactions occurred with five-membered heteroarenes entailing two consecutive C-C bond formations to synthesize benzo[e] chromeno[2,3-g] indol-13(1H)-one derivatives. The tandem cyclization reactions worked in acetonitrile without any additives such as transition metals, ligands and oxidants, giving rise to a broad variety of novel polycyclic xanthone frameworks in good yield under mild and environmentally friendly reaction conditions.

Abstract:Heterocyclic polymers have gained enormous attention for their unique functionalities and wide applications. In contrast with the well-studied polymer systems with five- or six-membered heterocycles, functional polymers with readily openable small-ring heterocycles have rarely been explored due to their large synthetic difficulty. Herein, a facile one-pot multicomponent polymerization to such polymers is developed. A series of functional polymers with multisubstituted and heteroatom-rich azetidine frameworks are efficiently generated at room temperature in high atom economy from handy monomers. The four-membered azetidine rings in the polymer skeletons can be easily transformed into amide and amidine moieties via a fast and efficient acid-mediated ring-opening reaction, producing brand-new polymeric materials with distinctive properties. All the as-prepared azetidine-containing polymers exhibit intrinsic visible luminescence in the solid state under long-wavelength UV irradiation even without conventionally conjugated structures. Such unconventional luminescence is attributed to the clusteroluminogens formed by through-space electronic interactions of heteroatoms and phenyl rings. All the obtained polymers show excellent optical transparency, high and tunable refractive indices, low optical dispersions and good photopatternability, which make them promising materials in various advanced electronic and optoelectronic devices. The ring-opened polymers can also function as a lysosome-specific fluorescent probe in biological imaging.

Abstract:Quinolones and isoquinolones exhibit diverse biological and pharmaceutical activities, and their synthesis is highly desirable under mild conditions. Here, a highly efficient and environmentally friendly visible light-mediated aerobic oxidation of readily available N-alkylpyridinium salts has been developed with Eosin Y as the organic photocatalyst and air as the terminal oxidant, and the reaction provided quinolones and isoquinolones in good yields. The method shows numerous advantages including mild and environmentally friendly conditions, high efficiency, tolerance of wide functional groups and low cost. Furthermore, 4-desoxylonimide with important pharmaceutical activities was effectively prepared by using our method. Therefore, the present method should provide a novel and useful strategy for synthesis and modification of N-heterocycles.

Abstract:A facile and efficient method for the synthesis of novel 2-substituted 4-tosyl-4,5-dihydrooxazolo[5,4-c]isoquinolines from 4-diazoisoquinolin-3-ones and nitriles is reported. The reaction proceeded through a TfOH-promoted formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition and the products could be conveniently converted to 2-aryloxazolo[5,4-c]isoquinolines and the subsequent 2-(oxazolo[5,4-c]isoquinolin-2-yl)phenol which emitted bright green light in dilute dichloromethane solution and in solid form as well. Simple operation, metal-free and mild reaction conditions, short reaction time and broad substrate scope are the prominent features of this methodology.

Abstract:A Hofmann-Loffler-Freytag type cyclization reaction of S-aryl-S-phenylpropyl sulfoximines (and related derivatives) was developed. Using molecular iodine as the initiator under visible light a series of five-membered cyclic products was obtained in moderate to high yields. The approach represents a new strategy for the synthesis of dihydroisothiazole oxides and benzo[d] isothiazoles-1-oxides.

Abstract:Nitrogen heterocycles represent a highly important class of compounds which are widely used in materials science, agrochemistry, and medicinal chemistry. Therefore, there is continuing interest in the development of convenient, efficient, and environmentally benign synthetic methods for the construction of nitrogen containing heterocycles. Due to its natural abundance, ease of use, and promising application in industry, the use of visible light as a driving force for chemical reactions has received considerable attention in the past few years. This account summarizes the synthesis of N-heterocycles using visible-light photoredox catalysis published in the last two years, according to the size and type of the formed N-heterocyclic rings. In the context of seminal works of others in this area, a concise summary of the contributions of the authors is also offered.

Abstract:Synthesis of new functional organic molecules is a critical path that may greatly accelerate the evolution of organic optoelectronic materials. We have achieved a facile synthesis strategy to produce unique saddle-shaped multi-functional triazepinium salts that exhibit excellent solid-state fluorescence. Their fluorescence performance could be easily regulated by adjusting the dihedral angle between the main skeleton and the substituted moiety, giving a large Stokes shift, non-aggregation quenching, long lifetime, and multilevel-redox characteristics.
