Abstract:This review introduces the recent advance of 2D metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) nanosheets and their application in electrocatalysis. The first part elucidates myriad synthetic strategies to generate 2D MOFs. The second part discusses a comparison of hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, and overall water splitting reactions performance. In the end, this direction's key challenges and future opportunities are concluded. The 2D nanosheets of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as a promising material that makes them valuable in widespread electrocatalytic fields due to their atomic‐level thickness, abundant active sites, and large surface area. Efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and overall water splitting are highly desired with low overpotentials to promote the industrial applications of energy conversion and devices. 2D MOF nanostructures provide long‐term stability and high electrical conductivity to enhance catalyst activity and durability. This review briefly summarizes the synthesis and electrocatalytic applications of 2D MOF for HER/OER/water splitting. More attention is focused on the synthetic strategies of 2D MOF and their derivatives. The catalytic performance and superior properties of these materials are highlighted. The outperformance of these materials originates from the rational design, myriad of abundant active sites, and atomic‐level thickness. The current and future challenges in this field and the scientific perspectives to overcome these challenges are highlighted. It is suggested that the construction of 2D MOF nanostructures can develop a state‐of‐the‐art electrocatalyst in energy and environmental division.

Abstract:A highly effective electrocatalyst is the central component of advanced electrochemical energy conversion. Recently, two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) have emerged as a class of promising electrocatalysts because of their advantages including 2D layered structure with high in-plane conjugation, intrinsic electrical conductivity, permanent pores, large surface area, chemical stability, and structural diversity. In this Review, we summarize the recent advances of 2D c-MOF electrocatalysts for electrochemical energy conversion. First, we introduce the chemical design principles and synthetic strategies of the reported 2D c-MOFs, as well as the functional design for the electrocatalysis. Subsequently, we present the representative 2D c-MOF electrocatalysts in various electrochemical reactions, such as hydrogen/oxygen evolution, and reduction reactions of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. We highlight the strategies for the structural design and property tuning of 2D c-MOF electrocatalysts to boost the catalytic performance, and we offer our perspectives in regard to the challenges to be overcome.

Abstract:The demand to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion has dramatically increased over the past few years. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent–organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising materials to improve the catalytic efficiency of a variety of electrochemical energy conversion reactions. Compared to 3D bulk MOFs and COFs, which are commonly obtained by typical synthesis routes, 2D MOFs and COFs are achieved through innovative synthesis strategies, and exhibit further benefits in terms of chemical and structural properties. Specifically, the large porosity and ultrathin structure of the 2D materials contribute to exotic properties such as large surface area, mechanical flexibility, enhanced electrical conductivity, and rapid mass transport during reactions, which are highly applicable to electrocatalysis. In this review, the synthesis methods of 2D MOFs and COFs are first discussed. Then, the distinct advantages and recent advances in 2D materials for electrocatalytic reactions, including water splitting, O2 reduction reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, and N2 reduction reaction, are introduced. Finally, based on existing challenges, crucial issues for the development of reliable 2D MOFs and COFs with enhanced catalytic performance are discussed.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction(OER) plays an important role in many electrochemical systems. However, its sluggish kinetics severely limits the development of next-generation energy technologies. Recently, two-dimensional(2D) metal-organic frameworks(MOFs) have attracted much attention as a class of promising electrocatalysts. Their diverse components and tunable structures provide a new platform to design and explore ideal electrocatalysts. The ultrathin characteristics including high specific surface area, abundant exposed metal sites and fast electronic transfer further promote the electrocatalytic performance of 2D MOFs. Therefore, many attempts have been made in synthesizing 2D MOF-based electrocatalysts in recent years. This review focuses on the strategies to fabricate 2D MOFs with high electrocatalytic performances for OER. The discussion on challenge and development of their electrocatalytic application is also presented.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new generation of intrinsically porous extended crystalline materials formed by coordination bonding between the organic ligands and metal ions or clusters, have attracted considerable interest in many applications owing to their high porosity, diverse structures, and controllable chemical structure. Recently, 2D transition-metal- (TM-) based MOFs have become a hot topic in this field because of their high aspect ratio derived from their large lateral size and small thickness, as well as the advantages of MOFs. Moreover, 2D TM-based MOFs can act as good precursors to construct heterostructures with high electrical conductivity and abundant active sites for a range of applications. This review comprehensively introduces the widely adopted synthesis strategies of 2D TM-based MOFs and their composites/derivatives. In addition, this paper summarizes and highlights the recent advances in energy conversion and storage, including the hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, urea oxidation reaction, batteries, and supercapacitors. Finally, the challenges in developing these intriguing 2D layered materials and their composites/derivatives are examined, and the possible proposals for future directions to enhance the energy conversion and storage performance are reviewed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are as a category of crystalline porous materials. Extensive interest has been devoted to energy storage and energy conversion applications owing to their unique advantages of periodic architecture, high specific surface area, high adsorption, high conductivity, high specific capacitance, and high porosity. One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures have unique surface effects, easily regulated size, good agglutination of the substrate, and other distinct properties amenable to the field of energy storage and conversion. Therefore, 1D nanostructures could further improve the characteristic properties of MOFs, and it is of great importance for practical applications to control the size and morphological characteristics of MOFs. The electrochemical application of 1D MOFs is mainly discussed in this review, including energy storage applications in supercapacitors and batteries and energy conversion applications in catalysis. In addition, various synthesis strategies for 1D MOFs and their architectures are presented.

Abstract:Metal‐organic framework electrocatalysts are reviewed including their design, synthesis and wide uses such as electrochemical reactions, electrocatalysis, and storage. Due to the increasing global energy demands, scarce fossil fuel supplies, and environmental issues, the pursued goals of energy technologies are being sustainable, more efficient, accessible, and produce near zero greenhouse gas emissions. Electrochemical water splitting is considered as a highly viable and eco‐friendly energy technology. Further, electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a cleaner strategy for CO2 utilization and conversion to stable energy (fuels). One of the critical issues in these cleaner technologies is the development of efficient and economical electrocatalyst. Among various materials, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are becoming increasingly popular because of their structural tunability, such as pre‐ and post‐ synthetic modifications, flexibility in ligand design and its functional groups, and incorporation of different metal nodes, that allows for the design of suitable MOFs with desired quality required for each process. In this review, the design of MOF was discussed for specific process together with different synthetic methods and their effects on the MOF properties. The MOFs as electrocatalysts were highlighted with their performances from the aspects of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrochemical CO2RR. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed.

Abstract:As a youthful family of crystalline porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), assembled by inorganic vertices (metal ions or clusters) and organic ligands, feature ultrahigh porosity, high surface area, and synthetic and structural tailorability, along with relatively easy synthesis, making them excellent candidates for a large number of applications. Recently, increasing research interest in the electrochemical fields with regard to the environment and energy has been received. Lots of MOFs have been designed, prepared, and used in electrochemical applications, exhibiting fascinating performances. Here, the rational fabrication of electrochemical-application-directed functional MOFs and MOF composites is appraised. The synthetic strategies for the enhancement of corres-ponding MOF electrochemical behaviors are summarized and the relationship between structure and electrochemical performance is discussed. It is expected that the summary will be helpful for the future development of related MOFs and MOF composites with an excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers with high porosity, good stability, and adjustable structure, and their excellent characteristics lay a solid foundation for electrocatalysis. This review systematically introduces the design principles of the catalytic sites in two-dimensional (2D) COF-based electrocatalysts and analyzes the relationship between 2D COF structure and their electrocatalytic performances. In particular, the recent progress in the field of 2D COFs as electrocatalysts is comprehensively summarized. Finally, we discuss the current shortcomings and challenges on tailoring 2D COF for high-performance electrocatalysts in details, and look forward to promoting more researches on 2D COF-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely adopted in various fields (catalysis, sensor, energy storage, etc.) during the last decade owing to the trait of abundant surface chemistry, porous structure, easy‐to‐adjust pore size and diverse functional groups. However, the limited active sites and the poor conductivity hinder the relative practical application. Two‐dimensional (2D) MOFs can shorten the ion transport path with the merit of layered structure. The large surface area can increase the number of active sites as well as effectively utilize the sufficient active sites, exhibiting enormous potential in the field of energy storage systems (EESs). In this review, the characteristics of the 2D MOFs have been introduced, and the systematic synthesis methods (top‐down and bottom‐up) of 2D MOFs are presented, providing fundamental understanding for the construction of 2D MOFs. Moreover, the applications of 2D MOFs in energy storage fields such as supercapacitors and batteries are demonstrated in detail. Finally, the future development prospects have been proposed, offering guidelines for the rational utilization of 2D MOFs and promoting the understanding of 2D MOFs in EESs.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheets are a new type of two-dimensional (2D) materials with unique design principles and various synthesis methods. They are considered ideal electrochemical devices due to the ultrathin thickness, easily tunable molecular structure, large porosity and other unique properties. There are two common methods to synthesize 2D MOF/COF nanosheets: bottom-up and top-down. The top-down strategy mainly includes ultrasonic assisted exfoliation, electrochemical exfoliation and mechanical exfoliation. Another strategy mainly includes interface synthesis, modulation synthesis, surfactant-assisted synthesis. In this Review, the development of ultrathin 2D nanosheets in the field of electrochemistry (supercapacitors, batteries, oxygen reduction, and hydrogen evolution) is introduced, and their unique dimensional advantages are highlighted.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to high-value carbon-based chemicals provides a sustainable approach to achieving an artificial carbon cycle. In the decade, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a kind of porous crystalline porous materials featuring well-defined structures, large surface area, high porosity, diverse components, easy tailorability, and controllable morphology, have attracted considerable research attention, serving as electrocatalysts to drive CO2 reduction. In this review, the reaction mechanisms of electrochemical CO2 reduction and the structure/component advantages of MOFs meeting the requirements of electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction are analyzed. After that, the representative progress for the precise fabrication of MOF-based electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction, focusing on catalytic site design and microenvironment modulation, are systemically summarized. Furthermore, the emerging applications and promising research for more practical scenarios related to electrochemical CO2 conversion are specifically proposed. Finally, the remaining challenges and future outlook of MOFs for electrochemical CO2 reduction are further discussed.

Abstract:High-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for water splitting and metal-air batteries. Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) has become a new class of efficient OER electrocatalysts due to the rich coordination unsaturated metal nodes, large specific surface area, and adjustable structures. In addition, because inheriting the original microstructure of MOFs and having stronger chemical and mechanical stability, metal/alloy/oxide, metal sulfide/selenide/phosphide, and other compounds derived from 2D MOFs have also shown their unique OER catalytic ability. Here, we briefly introduced the existing reaction mechanism and evaluation parameters of catalyst performance of OER, introduced the synthesis methods and corresponding characterization techniques of 2D MOFs and their derivatives, and summarized the latest progress of 2D MOFs and their derivatives as OER catalysts. Finally, we put forward some views and suggestions on the existing problems hindering the development of 2D MOFs as OER for advancing the field.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of porous coordination polymers, which are distinguished among polymer materials due to their remarkable properties, such as large surface area, adjustable structure and high porosity, and therefore, have generated extensive interest. Nevertheless, the poor electrical conductivity and narrow micropores of MOFs have constrained their applications. Hence, MOF composites, in which MOFs are combined with a variety of functional materials, have been introduced to mitigate the disadvantages of individual components. Zero-dimensional materials such as nanoparticles and quantum dots, one-dimensional materials (nanorods, nanotubes and nanobelts), and two-dimensional nanosheet materials can be combined with MOFs, and three-dimensional MOF composites have also been reported, including core–shell and cubic composites. In this review, the recent development of MOF composites and their synthetic methods, and their electrochemical applications, including catalysts, sensors, supercapacitors and batteries, are discussed according to their dimensions.

Abstract:Two-dimensional metal-organic nanosheets (2D MONs) are an emerging class of ultrathin, porous and crystalline materials. The organic/inorganic hybrid nature offers MONs distinct advantages over other inorganic nanosheets in terms of diversity of organic ligands and metal notes. Compared to bulk three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks, 2D MONs possess merits of high density and readily accessible catalytic sites, reduced diffusion pathways for reactants/products, and fast electron transportation. These features endow MONs with enhanced physical/chemical properties and are ideal for heterogeneous catalysis. In this review, state-of-the-art synthetic methods for the fabrication of 2D MONs are summarized. The advances of 2D MONs-based materials for electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), and electro-/photocatalytic organic transformations are systematically discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are provided regarding to the future design and synthesis of 2D MONs for high-performance electrocatalysis and photocatalysis.
