Abstract:Hollow granular mold flux is an essential functional material in the continuous casting process, and its melting behavior significantly influences continuous casting. The existing research mainly focuses on the influence of the characteristics of mold flux on the melting behavior and does not involve the operation of mold flux. This study explored the effect of flux layer thickness on the melting behavior of mold fluxes using a melting rate test method based on a copper bath and numerical simulation. The results show that with the increase in the flux layer thickness, the melting rate of mold fluxes shows the trend of the 'M curve,' including two upward and two downward stages. The 'M curve' is related to the temperature and combustion behavior of carbonaceous materials in the flux layer. In the first stage, as the thickness increases, the thermal insulation of the flux layer is significantly improved, which promotes the melting of the mold flux. In the second stage, the increase in flux layer thickness hinders the diffusion of O 2 from the air to the flux layer, and the carbon–oxygen reaction rate decreases, which is not conducive to the combustion of carbonaceous materials and the flux melting. In the third stage, the increase in the flux layer thickness hinders the diffusion of CO 2 to the outside, increases the CO 2 concentration in the flux layer, promotes the Boudouard reaction, and increases the melting rate. In the fourth stage, with the increase in the flux layer thickness, O 2 can only diffuse to the low-temperature zone (< 400 °C) of the flux layer and cannot participate in the carbon–oxygen reaction and form CO 2 , which decreases the rate of Boudouard reaction and the melting rate of mold flux.
