Abstract:The soils of Tonglushan mine was remediated by four plot experiments in the field: domestic waste backfilling (DW), construction waste backfilling (CW), plants and construction waste backfilling (CW + P), plants and domestic waste backfilling (DW + P). Soil microbial diversity and enzyme activities as influenced by remediation processes were evaluated. The results revealed that the heavy metal contents in the soils remediated by all the four methods were decreased, compared to the control. The microbial population size, functional diversity and soil enzyme activity in the remediated areas were all higher than those at the control site. Basal soil respiration differed among the five soils plots, but a significant increase in the basal soil respiration values was associated with DW + P soil, the others were decreased. Enhanced microbial activity is one of the important ecological characteristics in remediated soils in mining areas. By comparing the soil microbial characteristics among the four remediated sites, it was found that the microbial population size and soil enzyme activity at DW + P site were both the highest, significantly different from those at other sites, indicating that backfilling domestic waster before growing plants is an effective measure to remediate the soils in copper mining areas.
