Abstract:For the pure biharmonic equation and a biharmonic singular perturbation problem, a residual-based error estimator is introduced which applies to many existing nonconforming finite elements. The error estimator involves the local best-approximation error of the finite element function by piecewise polynomial functions of the degree determining the expected approximation order, which need not coincide with the maximal polynomial degree of the element, for example if bubble functions are used. The error estimator is shown to be reliable and locally efficient up to this polynomial best-approximation error and oscillations of the right-hand side.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the solution of the biharmonic equation using Adini nonconforming finite element, and report new results of the asymptotic error expansions of the interpolation error functionals and nonconforming remainder. These expansions are used to develop two extrapolation formulas and a series of sharp error estimates. Finally, the numerical results have verified the extrapolation theory.

Abstract:The biharmonic equation/eigenvalue problem is one of the fundamental model problems in mathematics and physics and has wide applications. In this paper, for the biharmonic eigenvalue problem, based on the work of Gudi [ Numer. Methods Partial Differ. Equ. , 27 (2011), 315-328], we study the a posteriori error estimates of the approximate eigenpairs obtained by the Ciarlet-Raviart mixed finite element method. We prove the reliability and efficiency of the error estimator of the approximate eigenfunction and analyze the reliability of the error estimator of the approximate eigenvalues. We also implement the adaptive calculation and exhibit the numerical experiments which show that our method is efficient and can get an approximate solution with high accuracy.

Abstract:This paper is aimed at studying finite element discretization for a class of quadratic boundary optimal control problems governed by nonlinear elliptic equations. We derive a posteriori error estimates for the coupled state and control approximation. Such estimates can be used to construct a reliable adaptive finite element approximation for the boundary optimal control problem. Finally, we present a numerical example to confirm our theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a posteriori error analysis for the nonconforming Morley element of the fourth order elliptic equation. We propose a new residual-based a posteriori error estimator and prove its reliability and efficiency. These results refine those of Beirao da Veiga et al. (Numer Math 106:165–179, 2007) by dropping two edge jump terms in both the energy norm of the error and the estimator, and those of Wang and Zhang (Local a priori and a posteriori error estimates of finite elements for biharmonic equation, Research Report, 13, 2006) by showing the efficiency in the sense of Verfürth (A review of a posteriori error estimation and adaptive mesh-refinement techniques, Wiley-Teubner, New York, 1996). Moreover, the normal component in the estimators of Beirao da Veiga et al. (Numer Math 106:165–179, 2007) and Wang and Zhang (Local a priori and a posteriori error estimates of finite elements for biharmonic equation, Research Report, 13, 2006) is dropped, and therefore only the tangential component of the stress on each edge comes into the estimator. In addition, we generalize these results to three dimensional case.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the adaptive fashion of the Ciarlet–Raviart mixed method for biharmonic equation/eigenvalue problem with simply supported boundary condition in Rd. We propose an a posteriori error indicator of the Ciarlet–Raviart approximate solution for the biharmonic equation and an a posteriori error indicator of the Ciarlet–Raviart approximate eigenfuction, and prove the reliability and efficiency of the indicators. We also give an a posteriori error indicator for the approximate eigenvalue and prove its reliability. We design an adaptive Ciarlet–Raviart mixed method with piecewise polynomials of degree less than or equal to m, and numerical experiments show that numerical eigenvalues obtained by the method can achieve the optimal convergence order O(dof−2md)(d=2,m=2,3;d=3,m=3).

Abstract:Some perturbed mixed finite element methods related to the reduced integration technique are considered for solving the biharmonic equation problem. On a rectangular mesh, a similar scheme was proposed in Malkus and Hughes (Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Eng. 15 (1978) 63-81) and its convergence was analyzed in Johnson and Pitkaranta (Math. Comp. 38 (1982) 375-400). Here we modify the scheme proposed in Malkus and Hughes (1978) and prove the optimal order error estimate without the extra smoothness assumption on the solution made in Johnson and Pitkaranta (1982). On a triangular mesh, an analogous scheme is studied, and an order error estimate is proved. Some numerical results are given to show the convergence behavior of the numerical solutions. A Preconditioned Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Biharmonic Equation with $C^0$-Reconstructed Approximation

Abstract:In this paper, we present a high-order finite element method based on a reconstructed approximation to the biharmonic equation. In our construction, the space is reconstructed from nodal values by solving a local least squares fitting problem per element. It is shown that the space can achieve an arbitrarily high-order accuracy and share the same nodal degrees of freedom with the $C^0$ linear space. The interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin scheme can be directly applied to the reconstructed space for solving the biharmonic equation. We prove that the numerical solution converges with optimal orders under error measurements. More importantly, we establish a norm equivalence between the reconstructed space and the continuous linear space. This property allows us to precondition the linear system arising from the high-order space by the linear space on the same mesh. This preconditioner is shown to be optimal in the sense that the condition number of the preconditioned system admits a uniform upper bound independent of the mesh size. Numerical examples in two and three dimensions are provided to illustrate the accuracy of the scheme and the efficiency of the preconditioning method.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart (CR) element approximation for the fluid-solid vibration problem. We present the a priori error estimate and the a posteriori error estimate, and we prove the reliability and efficiency of the a posteriori error indicator up to higher order terms. Moreover, we carry out the numerical experiments in adaptive fashion which together with theoretical analysis show that the CR element eigenvalues approximate the exact ones from below.

Abstract:This paper develops an a posteriori error estimate of residual type for finite element approximations of the Allen–Cahn equation u t − Δ u + ε −2 f ( u )=0. It is shown that the error depends on ε −1 only in some low polynomial order, instead of exponential order. Based on the proposed a posteriori error estimator, we construct an adaptive algorithm for computing the Allen–Cahn equation and its sharp interface limit, the mean curvature flow. Numerical experiments are also presented to show the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed error estimator and the adaptive algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a new residual-based pointwise a posteriori error estimator of the quadratic finite element method for the Signorini problem. The supremum norm a posteriori error estimates enable us to locate the singularities locally to control the pointwise errors. In the analysis the discrete counterpart of contact force density is constructed suitably to exhibit the desired sign property. We employ a priori estimates for the standard Green's matrix for the divergence type operator and introduce the upper and lower barriers functions by appropriately modifying the discrete solution. Finally, we present numerical experiments that illustrate the excellent performance of the proposed error estimator.

Abstract:The a posteriori error analysis of conforming finite element discretisations of the biharmonic problem for plates is well established, but nonconforming discretisations are more easy to implement in practice. The a posteriori error analysis for the Morley plate element appears very particular because two edge contributions from an integration by parts vanish simultaneously. This crucial property is lacking for popular rectangular nonconforming finite element schemes like the nonconforming rectangular Morley finite element, the incomplete biquadratic finite element, and the Adini finite element. This paper introduces a novel methodology and utilises some conforming discrete space on macro elements to prove reliability and efficiency of an explicit residual-based a posteriori error estimator. An application to the Morley triangular finite element shows the surprising result that all averaging techniques yield reliable error bounds. Numerical experiments confirm the reliability and efficiency for the established a posteriori error control on uniform and graded tensor-product meshes.

Abstract:<p>In this article, we construct and analyze a residual-based a posteriori error estimator for a quadratic finite volume method (FVM) for solving nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We shall prove that the a posteriori error estimator yields the global upper and local lower bounds for the norm error of the FVM. So that the a posteriori error estimator is equivalent to the true error in a certain sense. Numerical experiments are performed to illustrate the theoretical results.</p>

Abstract:This paper presents a hybridized formulation for the weak Galerkin finite element method for the biharmonic equation. The hybridized weak Galerkin scheme is based on the use of a Lagrange multiplier defined on the element boundaries. The Lagrange multiplier is verified to provide a numerical approximation for certain derivatives of the exact solution. An optimal order error estimate is established for the numerical approximations arising from the hybridized weak Galerkin finite element method. The paper also derives a computational algorithm (Schur complement) by eliminating all the unknown variables on each element, yielding a significantly reduced system of linear equations for unknowns on the boundary of each element.

Abstract:An abstract property (H) is the key to a complete a priori error analysis in the (discrete) energy norm for several nonstandard finite element methods in the recent work [Lowest-order equivalent nonstandard finite element methods for biharmonic plates, Carstensen and Nataraj, M2AN, 2022]. This paper investigates the impact of (H) to the a posteriori error analysis and establishes known and novel explicit residual-based a posteriori error estimates. The abstract framework applies to Morley, two versions of discontinuous Galerkin, $C^0$ interior penalty, as well as weakly over-penalized symmetric interior penalty schemes for the biharmonic equation with a general source term in $H^{-2}(\Omega)$.

Abstract:The author analyzes a finite element method for the integration of initial value problems in ordinary differential equations. General and contractive problems are treated, and quasi-optimal a priori and a posteriori error bounds obtained in each case. In particular, good results are obtained for a class of stiff dissipative problems. These results are used to construct a rigorous and robust theory of global error control. The author also derives an asymptotic error estimate that is used in a discussion of the behavior of the error. In conclusion, the properties of the error control are exhibited in a series of numerical experiments.
