Abstract:In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of Fenton-like catalysts suitable for operation under neutral conditions. In this study, chitosan/FeOOH/CeO2 microspheres were developed using a straightforward coprecipitation method. The catalysts are simple to prepare, cost-effective, and suitable for largescale production. In the presence of 60 mmol/L of H2O2, the catalysts achieved a 98% removal efficiency for 50 mg/L of OTC in simulated wastewater within 30 min at a wide pH range of 3-9. The excellent performance of the catalysts was mainly attributed to the formation of a CeO2-FeOOH heterogeneous structure resulting from the combination of CeO2 and the FeOOH matrix. In addition, the CeO2-FeOOH heterogeneous structure increased the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the surface of CeO2 and allowed the catalyst spheres to maintain a specific surface area of 103.7 m2/g even when the diameter increased to 1.73 +/- 0.16 mm. Density functional theory calculation and other supporting results revealed that Ce(III) served as the primary active centers responsible for the adsorption and activation of H2O2, while Fe(II) at the heterojunction facilitated the regeneration of Ce(III). This study provides insight into the development of efficient catalysts and the fundamental mechanisms of water treatment processes.

Abstract:A series of Fe2O3-doped (0.2–3.0%) sulfated tin oxides have been prepared by a co-precipitation method, followed by sulfation and calcination. The addition of small amounts of Fe2O3 to sulfated tin oxide results in an enhanced number of very strong and strong acid sites, which makes the Fe2O3-doped catalysts more active than the undoped one for esterification of lauric acid with methanol and transesterification of triacetin with methanol. The catalyst containing 1.0% Fe2O3 exhibits the highest activity for both biodiesel-forming type reactions.

Abstract:Esterifications of equimolar mixture of carboxylic acids and alcohols can be effectively catalyzed by Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 · 18H 2 O under solvent-free condition. The esterification catalyzed by Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 · 18H 2 O is a promising green method thanks to no need of organic solvent, no pollution, no causticity and ease to handle after reaction. This catalyst is of a low toxicity (usually it is used as purifying agent for drinking water), low-cost compound and is easily separated from the reaction mixture by simple filtration. Moreover, the catalyst can be recycled for the further esterification and the conversion does not evidently decrease.

Abstract:The acid-activated Fe-SiO2 composites were synthesized using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica source, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template and salts of Fe as the iron sources. After finishing the preparation, these samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy for the morphology of the catalysts, X-ray diffractometer for the dispersibility of Fe, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for the surface groups. To investigate catalytic activities, various photo-Fenton reactions have been conducted to decontaminate the direct red 4BS simulated wastewater under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the sample possessing its iron source from FeSO4 had better dispersibility, but lower activities and stability than that from Fe (NO3)3. At initial pH of 6.0, both FS/1 and FS/6 not only led to 100% decolorization of a solution containing 100 mg/L direct red, but also about 79% and 99% total organic carbon were removed in respective system after reaction for 120 min. The kinetics study showed that a model in combination of first order and second order reactions was suitable for this acid-catalyzed process. Analyses of solvent-leaching stability and iron leaching demonstrated these catalysts may have long-term stability.

Abstract:The two-component mixed oxides FeVOx with various molar ratio of Fe to V were prepared and their phase composition, structure and morphology were determined by XRD and SEM. This prepared material was employed for liquid-phase oxidation of octanol using H2O2 as oxidant. The mixed oxide FeVOx with 2.5:1 of Fe to V molar ratio was found to be an effective catalyst with high selectivity to octanal under solvent-free condition. The relationship between the catalytic performance and phase compositions of the mixed oxides was investigated by the test of its activity and XRD characterization. The catalytic action of the active sites including redox and acidic sites formed by interaction between VOx and FeOx on the surface of the catalyst was discussed. The catalyst was easily recovered and reused.
Highly Selective Oxidation of Styrene to Benzaldehyde over Fe 3 O 4 Using H 2 O 2 Aqueous Solution As Oxidant

Abstract:Fe 3 O 4 was prepared by an alternative method using the dropwise addition of FeCl 3 and FeSO 4 precursor solutions into a NaOH solution, as proved by XRD, TEM and magnetic measurements. The Fe 3 O 4 material was confirmed to be well-crystallized magnetite with an average size of about 21.5 nm and stronger superparamagnetic with a saturation magnetization of 57.04 emu/g and it was found to be an effective catalyst for liquid-phase oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde (BzH) with H 2 O 2 as oxidant, getting ca. 100% selectivity to BzH with 40.4% conversion of styrene. This catalyst can be easily recovered by a simple magnetic separation and effectively reused. However, the reaction mechanism was confirmed by in situ DRIFTS spectra analysis and according to literature reports.

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous strong acid catalyst has been synthesized through the copolymerization of p -toluenesulfonic acid and paraformaldehyde with sulfuric acid as catalyst. The novel catalyst owns the strong acidity as much as 4.0 mmol/g, while Nafion and Amberlyst-15 only has the acidity of about 0.8 mmol/g. Furthermore, the catalyst possesses the advantages of the high thermal stability (200 °C) and low cost for the simple synthetic procedure. The catalytic activities of the novel catalyst were taken through esterification of acetic acid and ethanol and acetalization of benzolaldehyde and 1,2-ethandiol. The results showed that the novel catalyst showed much higher activities than the Amberlyst-15 and owned even the comparative activity to sulfuric acid, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the replacement of the traditional homogeneous catalyst for the green process.

Abstract:n this paper the esterification (acetic acid reacting with ethanol ) was used as a model reaction and the influence of different preparations of sev eral kinds of solidsuperacids SO2-4/MxOy , such as SO2-4/γ-Al 2O3 , SO2-4/ZrO2，SO2-4/Fe2O3 et c. on the activity has been investigated. The conclusion is that th e catalytic activity of solid superacid SO2-4/Fe2O3, which is pre pared by cal cining FeSO4*7H2O directly on 550　℃, is the best in esterification and th e este rifying reaction is mainly catalyzed by B acid center on the surface of solid su peracid.

Abstract:Abstract A heterogeneous acid catalyst, Fe 3+ ‐vanadyl phosphate, prepared by the isomorphous substitution of some VO 3+ groups in vanadyl phosphate with trivalent metal Fe 3+ , was found to be active for the transesterification of soybean oil with methanol. When the transesterification reaction was carried out with a molar ratio of methanol to oil of 30:1, a reaction temperature of 473 K, a reaction time of 3 h and a catalyst amount of 5 wt%, the maximum conversion of soybean oil was 61.3%. Moreover, the catalytic activity of this catalyst was not significantly affected by the presence of free fatty acids and water in the reactants, and it also exhibits catalytic activity towards the esterification of free fatty acids with methanol. Further, it was shown that the spent catalyst could be easily reactivated by calcination at 773 K in air. There was very little change in the catalytic activity of the regenerated catalyst, even after five cycles.

Abstract:A facile approach has been adopted for coating cross-linked polystyrene (PS) shells on the surface of Fe3O4 magnetic clusters using reflux-precipitation polymerization (RPP). Treating the PS shell with chlorosulfonic acid yields magnetic composite particles with acid functionality. By adjusting the amount and proportion of monomers (styrene and divinylbenzene), the obtained magnetic composite particle solid acid (MPM-5S) exhibits a saturation magnetization value of 18 emu/g, a specific surface area of 243 m2/g and an acid density of 2.113 mmol/g. The MPM-5S magnetic solid acid catalyst was evaluated for esterification of oleic acid with methanol to prepare biodiesel. Under mild conditions, the conversion of oleic acid reached 91% , which was much higher than the catalytic activity of Amberlyst-15 and close to the catalytic activity of concentrated H2SO4. The solid acid catalyst can be recovered by magnetic separation and reused three times maintaining over 95% of its initial catalytic activity. Additionally, the solid acid can be used to catalyze the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural.
Baeyer-Villiger Oxidation and Acetalization of Cyclic Ketones on SO_4~(2-)/SnO_2-Fe_2O_3 Solid Acid Catalysts

Abstract:Fe-doped SO42-/SnO2(STF) solid acid catalysts with different amounts of iron were prepared via co-condensation,followed by sulfation and calcination.These materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy,X-ray powder diffraction(XRD),N2 adsorption-desorption analysis(BET),thermogravimetric(TG) analysis,and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The Fe-doped catalysts exhibited more activity than undoped catalysts in acetalization reactions of 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone and diols.The catalytic acetalization of several ketones and 1,2-diols with the SO42-/SnO2-Fe2O3 catalysts(with the Fe/Sn molar ratio of 0.5) were studied.The influence of the reaction time and the amount of the catalysts on the acetalization were also investigated.In addition,the high performance of this Fe-modified catalyst was demonstrated in the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclic ketones.The catalyst can be recycled several times without any significant loss in catalytic activity.

Abstract:A novel sulfated-group-riched sulfonated carbonaceous catalyst with high acidic strength and adjustable ratio of acidic groups was designed in the paper, where glucose and benzyl chloride were hydrothermally carbonized first followed by sulfonation treatment. Various physicochemical techniques were used to characterize the catalyst such as IR, 13C MAS NMR and XPS spectra, NH3-TPD, XRD patterns and TG curve. Then, it was applied in the esterification of succinic acid and fructose dehydration to form HMF. Compared to commercial Amberlyst-15 catalyst, such carbonaceous solid acid exhibited excellent catalytic activity and thermal stability, which was attributed to its higher amount of sulfonic acid group.
New Magnetic Fe Oxide-Carbon Based Acid Catalyst Prepared from Bio-Oil for Esterification Reactions

Abstract:In this work, bio-oil (an organic matrix rich in oxygen functionalities) was used to efficiently dissolve and disperse Fe3+ which upon thermal treatment produced a carbon containing dispersed and encapsulated Fe oxide magnetic nanoparticles. These materials were prepared by dissolution of 8, 16 and 24 wt.% Fe3+ salt in bio-oil followed by treatment at 400, 450, 500 or 600 ºC in N2 atmosphere. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopies (TEM), elemental analysis, thermogravimetric-mass spectrometry (TG-MS), potentiometric titration, Raman and Mössbauer spectroscopies showed that Fe3+ species in bio-oil is reduced to produce magnetic nanoparticles phases: magnetite Fe3O4 and maghemite γ-Fe2O3. At low temperatures, the iron phases were less protected, and the carbon matrix was more reactive, while in temperatures above 500 ºC, the iron phases were more stable, however, the carbon matrix was less reactive. Reaction of these magnetic carbon materials with concentrated H2SO4 produced surface sulfonic acidic sites (ca. 1 mmol g-1), especially for the materials obtained at 400 and 450 ºC. The materials were used as catalysts on esterification reaction of oleic acid with methanol at 100 ºC and conversions of 90% were reached, however, after 2 consecutive uses, the conversion decreased to 30%, being required more studies to improve the material stability.

Abstract:Fe2O3-SiO2 mixed oxides were prepared by stearic acid method for the first time. After being impregnated by H2SO4 solution and calcined at a certain temperature, the mixed oxides formed a solid acid. The samples were characterized by XRD, TEM, N2 adsorption/desorption and TG-DTA methods. The results showed that with the increasing of SiO2 content the specific surface areas of Fe2O3-SiO2 mixed oxides increased significantly, but the porous sizes decreased. The catalytic activities of the solid acid catalysts were evaluated by esterification of acetic acid and butanol.

Abstract:In this paper, the metal oxide supports and active component precursors of SO42−/MxOy solid acid were screened, and S2O82‐−/Cr2O3-Fe2O3 (S2-CrFe) was prepared. The NH3-TPD results showed that the solid acids loaded with S2O82− had stronger acidity than those loaded with SO42−, and the mixture of the two metal oxides could adjust the acidity of the solid acids. The optimum conditions for the preparation of S2-CrFe were as follows: the mass ratio of Cr2O3 to Fe2O3 was 1:1, the concentration of ammonium persulfate solution was 1 mol/L, and the calcination temperature was 550 °C. The yield of esterification catalyzed by the solid acid obtained under these conditions was 91.2%. The stability of the new solid acid was investigated, and it was found that S2-CrFe was easy to be deactivated, so it was considered to be modified by organosilane and lanthanum oxide. The experimental results showed that after the modified solid acid was recycled for four times, the yield of ethyl acetate was more than 60%.

Abstract:With the aim of preparing a sulfonic acid-type solid acid catalyst having a high density of acid sites and excellent stability, this work synthesized sulfonic acid bowl-shaped hydrothermal carbon microspheres (SA-OBHCs), using amine groups as the primary sulfonic acid bonding sites. This material was synthesized via a three-step functionalization process comprising the oxidation, amidation and sulfonation of BHCs. The extent to which chlorosulfonic acid reacted with amine groups in diethylenetriamine molecules on microsphere surfaces was also investigated using density functional theory calculations. These calculations showed that the substitution reaction of primary amines proceeded less readily than that of secondary amines but provided a more stable product. The surface acid d ensity of the SA-OBHCs was as high as 11.2 mmol·g −1 and the –SO 3 H groups on the SA-OBHCs were found to be thermally stable up to 200 °C. These SA-OBHCs were subsequently used to catalyze the synthesis of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) from a waste frying oil model compound and methanol. Reactions performed using a methanol/oil molar ratio of 20:1 at 140 °C for 3 h gave a FAMEs yield of 93.4 %. After four reuses, an SA-OBHCs specimen provided a FAMEs yield of 77.5 %, demonstrating the significant stability of this material.

Abstract:In the present study, a new heterogeneous Fenton-like system consisting of nano-composite Mn3O4/SBA-15 catalyst and H2O2 has been investigated for the complete oxidation of ethanol (100ppm) in aqueous solution. Experimental data show that the relative reaction rate for ethanol oxidation can be strongly influenced by several factors, such as reaction temperature, pH value, ratio of catalyst/solution and the concentration of ethanol. A plausible reaction mechanism has been proposed to explain the reaction behavior. The rate for the complete oxidation is supposed to be dependent on the concentration of intermediates (radicals: OH, O2−, and HO2) that are derived from the decomposition of H2O2. In any case, the complete oxidation of ethanol can be improved only under the conditions that (i) the intermediates are stabilized, such as stronger acid solution and high temperatures, or (ii) scavenging those radicals due to the catalyst is reduced, such as less amount of catalyst and high concentration of reactant. Nevertheless, the reactivity of the presented catalyst is still slightly inferior to the conventional homogenous Fenton catalyst, Fe2+–H2O2. A possible reason is that the concentration of intermediates in the latter is might be relatively high.

Abstract:SO~(2-)_4 /Fe_2O_3-γ-Al_2O_3s were prepared by adhesion of γ-Al_2O_3 nanoparticle fibre to solid superacid SO~(2-)_4 /Fe_2O_3(SF) prepared by impregnation. Activity of the catalyst was tested via esterification of acetic acid and butyl alcohol. Activity of the catalysts was investigated for different catalyst types, different doping quantity of γ-Al_2O_3 different calcination temperature, different calcination time, different impregnation liquors and different impregnation liquor concentration.

Abstract:A series of Al2O3-doped (0.5%-3.0%, molar fraction) sulfated tin oxide catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation method. The structures and textural properties of these catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), Raman spectroscopy, and Al-27 magic. angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR). The number of acid sites on the catalysts was measured by the potentiometric titration of n-butylamine. Their catalytic performance for the esterification of lauric acid with methanol and the transesterification of triacetin with methanol was also investigated. The results showed that the addition of Al2O3 to sulfated tin oxide improved the catalytic activity markedly. The remarkable activities of the Al2O3-doped catalysts are caused by the larger number of acid sites. The SO42-/SnO2 catalyst doped with a 1.0% molar fraction of Al2O3 exhibited the highest activity. The lauric acid conversion was 92.7% after esterification for 6 h, and the triacetin conversion was 91.1% after transesterification for 8 h on this catalyst.
