Abstract:Underlying surface condition has significant impact on urban microclimate. A field measurement was performed to investigate the effects of different underlying surface conditions on surface-air temperature distribution in Guangzhou in summer. Infrared thermograph and temperature & humidity data logger were employed to collect the surface temperature and near ground (1.5m) air temperature of sunlit lawn, sunlit concrete pavement, water body and shady pavement. Maximum surface temperatures difference was approximately 25 degrees C, while maximum air temperatures difference was 3 degrees C. There was a strong correlation between surface temperature and solar radiation intensity. The air temperature vertical gradient was high below 0.3m and negligible within 0.3m similar to 1.5m. Although the main influence factors of horizontal air temperature gradient are underlying surface conditions, the influence of wind speed, wind direction and terrain can not be neglected. The empirical relationships of land surface temperature and air temperature at 1.5m height were developed by linear regression analyses for different land surface types.
