Abstract:The new complex of Eu(BA)_2(MAA)(Phen) is synthesized and is used as a red light-emitting material in our organic electroluminescent devices with the structure of ITO/TPD/Eu(BA)_2(MAA)(Phen).The brightness of 15 cd/m~2 and luminous efficiency of 0.25 lm/W are achieved at the voltage of 26 V. This material has strong photoluminescence and relatively good electroluminescence along with excellent mono-chromaticity.The mechanism of this EL device is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Eu3+ polymer named PRL basing on a new Eu-containing monomer was synthesized and was used as a red light-emitting material in our organic electroluminescent device with single layer structure of ITO/PRL/Al. This material had strong photoluminescence, good chromaticity and can transport both holes and electrons. Being a polymer, the device made by use simple spin-coating method in stead of the usual doped spin-coating and vacuum deposition The brightness of 80cd/m(2) was achieved at the voltage of 26V. And we try to explained the mechanism of this EL device according to its photoluminescence, electroluminescence, B-V and I-V characteristic. And we also measured its mobility and explained the reason of its relatively high drive voltage and low luminescence.
Electroluminescent Properties of Three Ternary Europium Complexes with Different Phenanthroline Derivatives

Abstract:Three ternary Eu(III) complexes with general formula of Eu(DBM)3LN (DBM = dibenzoylmethanate, and LN (N = 1-3 ) stand for three different 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives) have been synthesized for vacuum deposition films-based electroluminescent devices. The complex Eu(DBM)3L3 (L3 = 2-phenyl-3-[3-(carbazol-9-yl)propyl]imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenan-throline) was designed with an effort to combine the electron-transporting phenanthroline platform and the hole-transporting carbazole group into one molecule expecting to improve both electron and hole transporting properties simultaneously. The results show that the variation of the neutral ligands in Eu(III) mixed ligand complexes is a simple and effective approach to the improvement in the thermal stability, PL and EL properties of materials. A double-layer device with the configuration of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/Eu(DBM)3L3 (50 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1 (200 nm)/Ag (100 nm) exhibited Eu(III)-based pure red emission with a maximum brightness of 561 cd/m2 at 16 V, and an onset driving voltage of 8 V. A device with the configuration of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/[Eu(DBM)3L3 (5 nm):BCP (5 nm)]4/BCP (20 nm)/AIQ (10 nm) Mg0.9Ag0.9 (110 nm)/Ag (100 nm) gave high efficient and pure red light emission with a luminance of 1419 cd/m2.

Abstract:By reacting an asymmetric semi-rigid V-shaped linker H(3)dpob (H(3)dpob = 3-(2'3'-dicarboxylphenoxy)benzoic acid) and Ln(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O, nine novel Ln-based luminescent materials, from 1D to 3D, namely {[Eu.dpob).phen)]center dot H2O}(n) (1), {[Ln(Hdpob)(ox)(0.5)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (Ln = Eu(2), Sm(3), Gd(4), Tb(5)), {[Eu(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O}(n) (6), and {[Ln(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot mH(2)O} n (Ln = Eu(7), Gd(8), Tb(9), m = 0.5 for 7 and 9; m = 1 for 8) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; H(2)ox = oxalic acid) have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and PXRD. The crystal structures of 1-9 indicate that the coordination modes and coordination configuration of the H(3)dpob ligand play critical roles in the formation of the lanthanide architectures. Complexes 1-5 display multiple structures from double-stranded 1D chains to 4-connected 2D layers, through [Eu-2(CO2)(4)] or [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] dinuclear units with different auxiliary ligands. Complexes 6 and 7 are genuine supramolecular isomers which are induced by the concentration effect. 6 possesses a 2D kgd network with a Schlafli symbol of (4(3))(2)(4(6).6(6).8(3)) built from 6-connected [Eu-2(CO2)(2)] units and 3-connected H(3)dpob, which further connects to a (3,8)-connected tfz-d topology through O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. 7 displays a 3D (3,6)-connected rtl network with the Schlafli symbol (4.6(2))(2)(4(2).6(10).8(3)). Eu complexes 1, 2, 6, and 7 as well as Tb complexes 5 and 9 could provide intense and bright characteristic D-5(0) -> F-7(J)/D-5(4) -> F-7(J) red/green luminescence under UV excitation in the solid state at 298 K and 77 K. The calculated singlet and triplet energies of H(3)dpob as well as phen and H(2)ox ligands indicate that these ligands act as antenna chromophores that are able to efficiently absorb and transfer energy to Ln(III) ions. In complexes 1, 2 and 5, ligand-to-metal energy transfer processes could occur in mixed ligands. However, these processes occurred in a single H3dpob ligand in complexes 6 and 7. With careful adjustment of the relative concentration of the lanthanide ions and by varying the excitation wavelengths of {[Gd0.92Eu0.04Tb0.04(dpob)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O} n (10), tunable yellow (CIE coordinate: 0.51, 0.40) to white-light (CIE coordinate: 0.33, 0.34) emission has been obtained.

Abstract:Electroluminescent devices using a ternary europium complex Eu(DBM)3(hhpy)2 (dibenzoylmethane, DBM; hexahydro pyridine, hhpy) as an emitting layer, poly(vinyl-carbazole) (PVK) as a hole-transporting material and tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) as an electron-transporting material have been fabricated. When only using Eu(DBM)3(hhpy)2 as the emitting layer, luminance of 2.52cd/m2 with pure Eu3+ EL emissions from devices is achieved. Introducing a hole transporting material PVK and an electron transporting material 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxidiazole (PBD) in the emitting layer, luminance of 100cd/m2 is achieved, and the eletroluminescence efficiency is enhanced by about two orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Using two different trivalent europium (Eu3+) complexes, europium(dibenzoylmethanato)(3)(bathophenanthroline) [Eu(DBM)(3)bath] and europium(dibenzoylmethanato)(3)(monophenanthroline) [Eu(DBM)(3)phen], with different ligands for emission-layer materials, various types of electroluminescent (EL) devices have been fabricated. Combined with a triphenylamine derivative (TPD) and an oxadiazole derivative (OXD7) as hole-transport-layer materials, two-layer-and three-layer-type devices have been fabricated. We find that these two emission-layer materials have similar EL spectra, but their EL performances are different. The EL capability of the Eu complexes and their carrier-transporting characteristics are largely dependent on the ligands. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Abstract:Trivalent europium complexes exhibit good luminescent characteristics. A series of octacoordinated ternary europium complexes with fluorinated diketone and heteroaromatic auxiliary unit were synthesized. The synthesized europium complexes were characterized by elemental, thermal, electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses. Band gap values lie in range of semiconductors which confirm the conducting behavior of prepared complexes. Photoluminescence spectra were recorded in solid state and DMSO solvent. Emission spectral profiles have displayed most intense peak at ~ 612 nm corresponding to hypersensitive 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition. Colorimetric parameters suggest red luminous nature of europium complexes. The luminescent heteroleptic europium complexes might be utilized as emissive materials for fabricating display. Graphical

Abstract:Five rare earth complexes (Gd(acac)3, Gd(TFacac)3, Eu(acac)3, Eu(TFacac)3 and Eu(TFacac)3bipy; acac, acetylacetone; TFacac, 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone; bipy, 2,2′-bipyridyl) were synthesized. By comparing the phosphorescence spectra of Gd(acac)3 and Gd(TFacac)3, the effect of the replacement of hydrogen by fluorine was examined. Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on the corresponding europium complexes as emissive layers were also fabricated by the spin-coating method. The triple-layer-type device with the structure glass substrate/ITO (indium–tin oxide)/PVK [poly(N-vinylcarbazole)]/PVK·Eu(TFacac)3bipy:PBD[2-(4-bibipyyl)-5-(4-t-butylbipyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole)]/PBD/Al (aluminum) exhibits a brighter red luminescence than those devices with Eu(acac)3 and Eu(TFacac)3 complexes as emissive centers upon applying a d.c. voltage.

Abstract:The electrochemical and electroluminescent properties of some europium complexes and the terpolymers of 9-vinylcarbazole,methyl methacrylate and europium-methacrylate complex were investigated. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of poly(VK-co-MMA-co-Eu(BA)(2)(MAA) phen) (Cl) showed a quasi-reversible oxidation peak with onset of 0.75 V,and an irreversible reduction peak with onset of -1.8 V. The results demonstrated that this kind of multi-functional material has both hole- and electron-transporting properties. Some light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on the europium containing complex and copolymers were fabricated. All these devices exhibited characteristic sharp red electroluminescence when forward biases were applied, and the turn-on voltage was in the range of 12 similar to 27 V. A maximum brightness of 52 cd/m(2) with a luminous efficiency of about 0.031 1m/W was achieved from a single-layer device based on the multi-functional copolymer C3. EL spectra of the devices showed that the emissions were from the corresponding lanthanide-complex units,instead of carbazole groups of the copolymers. It is suggested that the carbazole groups in Cn serve as hole-transport material while electron transfer may occur through the lanthanide-containing moieties of the same copolymer.

Abstract:A novel binuclear europium and yttrium β-diketone complex EuY(TTA)6Phen2 was synthesized. The electroluminescent device using it as an emitter was fabricated. When the structure of device is ITO/TPD/EuY(TTA)6Phen2/Alq3/Mg:Ag, the emission peak of 613 nm and the luminance of 99 cd/m2 at 11 V from the device have been achieved. The results showed that the new β-diketone chelate possessed better PL and EL properties, and film formation than those of Eu(TTA)3Phen.

Abstract:A novel terbium complex, Tb(acac)3AAP (acac: acetylacetone, AAP: 4-amino-antipyrine), was synthesized and its luminescent properties were studied. When it was used as an emitting center, triple-layer-type device with a structure of glass substrate/ITO (indium–tin oxide)/TPD (N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine)/Tb(acac)3AAP/PBD (2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-t-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole) or Alq3 (tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum)/Al (aluminum) exhibited bright characteristic emission of terbium ion upon applying d.c. voltage. The maximum luminance of the device is 56 cd/m2 at 19 V and the maximum luminance efficiency is 0.357 lm/W.

Abstract:With two second ligands, 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole (HPBM) and 1-ethyl-2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole (EPBM), two novel europium complexes, Eu(TTA)3HPBM and Eu(TTA)3EPBM (TTA, thenoyltrifluoroacetonato) were synthesized and applied to organic electroluminescent (EL) devices as the emitting materials. The devices of ITO/TPD/Eu(TTA)3HPBM (or Eu(TTA)3EPBM)/AlQ/Al were fabricated. The EL devices emit red light originating from these two europium complexes. The EL brightness of Eu(TTA)3EPBM is much higher than that of Eu(TTA)3HPBM. For Eu(TTA)3EPBM, a maximum luminance of 36.6cd/m2 was achieved at 21V.
Bright and Monochromic Red Light-Emitting Electroluminescence Devices Based on a New Multifunctional Europium Ternary Complex

Abstract:A novel europium(III) complex, tris(dibenzoylmethanato)(2-4'-triphenylamino)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline)europium(III), Eu(DBM)(3)(TPIP), is synthesized. The light-emitting center, hole-transporting triphenylamine and electron-transporting phenanthroline fragments are integrated into one molecule. A single-layer device of ITO/Eu(DBM)(3)(TPIP)(60 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1/Ag exhibits Eu-III-based pure red emission with a maximum brightness of 19 cd m(-2) at 13.5 V and 280 mA cm(-2), and an onset driving voltage of 8 V. A four-layer device of ITO/TPD (20 nm)/Eu(DBM)(3)(TPIP) (40 nm)/BCP (20 nm)/AlQ(40 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1/Ag gives a maximum Eu-III-based pure red emitting luminance of 1305 cd m(-2) at 16 V and 255 mA cm(-2) with an onset driving voltage of 6 V; the maximum external quantum yield and luminous yield are estimated to be 0.85% and 1.44 lm W-1, respectively, at 7.5 V and 0.25 mA cm(-2).

Abstract:This paper reports the synthesis, structure, photophysical, and optoelectronic properties of five eight-coordinate Europium(III) ternary complexes, namely, [Eu(hth)3(L)2], bearing 4,4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-hexanedione (hth) as a sensitizer and L = H2O (1), dpso (diphenyl sulphoxide, 2), dpsoCH3 (4,4′-dimethyl diphenyl sulfoxide, 3), dpsoCl (bis(4-chlorophenyl)sulphoxide, 4), and tppo (triphenylphosphine oxide, 5) as co-ligands. The NMR and the crystal structure analysis confirmed the eight-coordinate structures of the complexes in solution and in a solid state. Upon UV-excitation on the absorption band of the β-diketonate ligand hth, all complexes showed the characteristic bright red luminescence of the Europium ion. The tppo derivative (5) displayed the highest quantum yield (up to 66%). As a result, an organic light-emitting device, OLED, was fabricated with a multi-layered structure—ITO/MoO3/mCP/SF3PO:[complex 5] (10%)/TPBi:[complex 5] (10%)/TmPyPB/LiF/Al—using complex 5 as the emitting component.

Abstract:A binuclear europium(H) complex of Eu(TTA)(3)(tpphz)Eu(TTA)(3) (where tpphz=tetrapyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c:3",2"-h:2"',3"'-j]phenazine; TTA=alpha-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato) was newly synthesized. The photoluminescent and electroluminescent properties of the complex were studied. A four-layered device of ITO/TPD, 10 nm/Eu(TTA)(3)(tpphz)Eu(TTA)(3), 20 nm/BCP, 20 nm/AIQ, 40 nm/Mg0.9Ag0.1, 200 nm/Ag, 100 nm gave a wide emission peak centered at 633 nm, which was most probably due to the formation of the exciplex between the Eu(III) complex and TPD. The maximum luminance of 146 cd/m(2) at 18 V and 135 mA/cm(2), and a turn-on voltage of 10 V were achieved for the device.

Abstract:Two novel compounds named Eu(CCPHD)3Phen and Eu(CCPHD)3Bath with carbazole moieties,which have good hole-transporting properties,were synthesized.The carbazole moieties could act as the "light-harvesting antenna" to increase the luminescence performance because of the broad absorption band and shield the effects of solvents.The novel ternary europium complexes and reference Eu(DBM)3Phen showed brightly red characteristic emission of Eu(Ⅲ)(5D0→7FJ(J=0～4),612 nm) under excitation through broad band(230～350 nm).In addition,the carbazole moieties could prevent crystallization of the complexes and increase the quality of the film fabricated in organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs).

Abstract:In order to develop new materials for red electroluminescent devices, a novel ligand, 2-phenyl-imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L), and an europium (III) complex with dibenzoylmethanate (DBM), Eu(DBM)3L, was synthesized. The crystal structure of Eu(DBM)3L was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal of Eu(DBM)3L belongs to orthorhombic, space group Pbca with cell dimensions of a=2.1655(6) nm, b=2.0834(5) nm, c=2.6469(7) nm, V=11.942(5) nm3, Z=8, Dx=1.307 g/cm3. Each europium atom is coordinated with six oxygen atoms from three bidentate DBM anions and two nitrogen atoms from one bidentate L, forming a distorted square antiprism. The complex is easily evaporated and can be used as a red light emitting material. Upon improvement, the device with a structure of ITO/N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (TPD) (40 nm)/Eu(DBM)3L (50 nm)/2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathocuproine or BCP) (20 nm)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (ALQ) (30 nm)/cathode gives off pure red light with luminance of 42 cd/m2 at 16 V.

Abstract:Ternary europium complex-doped, inorganic/organic hybrid monoliths were prepared from TEOS (Si (OC2H5)(4)), GPTM (3-glycidyloxyproxyl-trimethoxysilane) and Eu(TTA)(3)phen complex and the luminescence properties of the hybrid materials were also investigated. The gels exhibit the characteristic emission bands of europium ions and the characteristic excitation bands of lanthanide complexes. In addition, EU3+ presents a longer fluorescence lifetime with higher colorimetric purity in gel than in the corresponding pure complex.

Abstract:A novel long alkyl chain-containing Eu(III) complex, tris(α-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)(1-octadecyl-2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole)europium(III), Eu(TTA)3(L18), was designed for electroluminescent (EL) devices. The complex exhibited a low melting point and a large temperature difference between the melting point and onset decomposition compared to a shorter alkyl chain (ethyl) analogue. By vacuum deposition technique, a two-layer ITO/TPD/Eu(TTA)3(L18)/Al and a three-layer ITO/TPD/Eu(TTA)3(L18)/AlQ/Al EL device were fabricated and EL properties of the devices were studied. The two devices gave dominant red light emission from the europium complex with maximum luminance efficiency comparable to the two-layer device made of the short alkyl chain congener.
