Abstract:Due to their unique structures and excellent properties, increasingly stringent emission legislations offer new opportunities for zeolites as commercial catalysts in emission control of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) from diesel engines in heavy-duty vehicles, the preferred tools for transport of goods. New progress and ongoing challenges with regard to use of zeolites as selective catalytic reduction catalysts or passive NO x adsorbents have been concluded. The relationship between the catalytic performances with the structure, stability, and cost of the zeolites have been addressed as crucial factors for the applications of these zeolite catalysts. Challenges and opportunities: • More stringent emission legislations have offered new opportunities for zeolites as efficient catalysts for control of NO x emissions in diesel engines, which are necessary for transport of goods. • Zeolite-supported copper catalysts (Cu-zeolites) in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) have been widely applied in the past decade, but the challenges with regard to zeolite catalyst research, such as adjusting Al location, enhancing hydrothermal stability, and reducing zeolite cost, remain. • Zeolite-based passive NO x adsorbents (PNA) have emerged recently, which require much more research for commercial applications. Diesel engines in heavy-duty vehicles play vital roles in modern society due to their high efficiency, durability, reliability, and low-operating cost. However, diesel engines are considered to be one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution caused by exhaust emissions (e.g., NO x ). More stringent emission legislations have offered new challenges and opportunities for zeolites as efficient catalysts for control of NO x emissions in diesel engines.
