Abstract:The structure of cage molecule N-60 has been calculated by using ab initio method at 6-31G level. The optimized stable geometrical structure of N-60 is concave cage with twelve concave-down atoms in the cage. The results of electronic structure calculations can be used for explaining the formation of the concave N-60 cage.

Abstract:The INDO series of methods are used to study two kinds of structures of C60SiH2: one is C2V isomer with a bridging SiH2 across the bond between two fused six-membered rings in C60, and the other is CS isomer sith a bridging SiH2 across the bond between a five- and a six- membered rings in C60. From the view of total energy and LUMO-HOMO energy gap, the most stable struture of C60SiH2 is C2V geometry in which bridging C(15)-C(30) bond length and bondorder are 0.1508nm and 0.9369, thus forming a cyclopropane-like struture. The electronic spectra and NMR spectra of both isomers have been calculated based on the similar studies about the isoelectronic molecules C60O and C60CH2, the electronic spectra of which are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:The Geometry optimization on radical anion C60 3- has been performed by INDO series methods and the D2h symmetry structure has been obtained. It is illustrated that the Jahn-Teller distortion has happened for C60 3- indeed, which induced that the single bonds become shorter whereas the double bonds become longer, furthermore the extra negative charges distribute in the vicinity of the equator. The electronic spectrum of C60 3- has been calculated based on the optimized geometry and is in agreement with the experimental results. The spectrum has been assigned theoretically and the nature of red shift has been discussed.

Abstract:Deep studies on C-60(n-) and C-70(n-) have been performed based on superconductivities of M-x C-60 (M = K, Cs, Rb). The development of research in the Jahn-Teller distortion and spectroscopy of fullerene ions C-60(n +/-), C-70(n +/-), C-76(n +/-), C-78(n +/-) , and C-80(n +/-), is reviewed. Relevant works of other groups worldwide about experimental determination, theoretical calculation, structural exploration and spectroscopic investigation are introduced. The regularity of Jahn-Teller distortion and electronic spectra of fullerene ions is further explored according to authors' theoretical research in this field.

Abstract:The predicted lower energy structures of neutral carbon cluster C-10 are presented by using the particle swarm optimization method in combination with quantum chemistry calculation. Our results describe a wonderful diversity of C-10 configuration with the DFT and MP2 methods. For linear and cyclic clusters, the energy of most stable monocyclic structure with D-5h symmetry is lower by 1.38 kcal/mol than the transition isomers with D-10h symmetry at CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level, which is consistent with the previous theoretical results by others. All linear structures of C-10 cluster have been certified as the metastable states at different calculation methods in this work. Simulated infrared spectra reveals that the extensive electron localization exists in the D-10h configuration leading to the decreasing of the number of vibration modes compared with D-5h, configuration. The nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations indicate that planar C-10 system is a stable aromatic compound and the position used to calculate the aromatic indices can be affected by the most shielding or deshielded location that we employed. The contribution of the delocalized electrons to the pi-aromaticity is identical in C1(a) and C1(b). By the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) and canonical molecular orbital (CMO) analysis, we know that the highly symmetric structures have more energy degenerate CMOs and 2 center-2 electron bond connection, and monocyclic C-10 cluster is a globally doubly (sigma- and pi-) aromatic compound. Topological analysis and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis show that there isn't any electrostatic type of interactions in C-10 structures, and much of negative natural valence electron configuration comes from high angular momentum orbitals. According to the electron configurations, the natural hybrid orbital is mainly composed of sp hybrid in the systems. It is worth mentioning that the competition of complicated many body effects plays a significant role in stabilizing the distorted configuration of C-10 cluster. Abstract:A comprehensive search for the stable geometries of bare Si-60 and Si-60 supported on a C-60 fullerene was carried out using first principles calculations based on density functional theory. In contrast to previous theoretical studies and in agreement with recent experiments, we show that Si-60 and C-60@Si-60 clusters are unstable in the fullerenelike cage structure. However, Si-60 cage can be stabilized by including within it, as endohedral units, small magic clusters such as Al12X (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) and Ba@Si-20.

Abstract:It is generally considered that a bare Si-60 fullerene-like cage is geometrically unstable. In this paper, a Si-60 fullerene-like cage passivated by F or Cl atoms is investigated by the use of ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. The results show that passivated Si-60 cage can be stabilised in a perfect fullerene structure. The geometry, stability and electronic properties for the passivated Si-60 cage are discussed.

Abstract:WHILE carbon fullerenes are studied theoretically, we tend to predict if there may be some pure nitrogen molecules which possibly consist of the same geometric structures as carbon fullerenes. Experimentally Vogler et al. ['I have obtained the intermediate absorbed at 380 nm which was assigned to N6 molecules in 1980. Some reports of ab initio calculations have appeared concerning theoretical aspects of nitrogen cage-like structure^[^-^^. Bliznyuk et a1 . [61 calculated the geometrical .structure of N20 molecules with Ih symmetry at HF level, showing that N20 has a metastable dodecahedra1 geometry, with 209.34 Id of nitrogen atoms more than that of ION2. The Nzo molecule might be a very effective high energy density material (HEDM) if it could be synthesized. Leininger et u1. ['I compared three isomers of N8 and another high-energy density material candidate of 0,. They showed that the nitrogen compounds give dissociation energies (per mole of atoms) which are 2-3 times greater than those of the oxygen HEDMs at the MP2 level. Because N8 is a high energy density material, the &(Oh) might be synthesized by the photochemical method. For example, two photochemically allowed [2 + 21 cycloadditions will yield Ns(Oh) from N8(DZd) which has planar structure. We have reported the theoretical electric structures and vibrational frequencies for three isomers of N~~[~~ cage-like molecules and shown that these molecules might become possible high energy density materials. In this study, we will further consider the N12 cage-like isomers: an N12 structure with D6h symmetry and a structure with D3d symmetry. Abstract:Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we demonstrate that Si-60 fullerene cage can be stabilized by exohydrogenated method. In contrast to previous theoretical studies that Si-60 fullerene geometry construction will be seriously distorted when it is bare or encapsulated by metal atom clusters, exohydrogenated scheme shows that Si60H60 cage will be able to keep perfect fullerene structure similar to C-60.

Abstract:Among C60's diverse functionalities, its potential application in CO2 sequestration has gained increasing interest. However, the processes involved are sensitive to the molecule's electronic structure, aspects of which remain debated and require greater precision. To address this, we performed structural optimization of fullerene C60 using the QM MP2/6-31G* method. The nonplanarity of the optimized icosahedron is characterized by two types of dihedral angles: 138° and 143°. The 120 dihedrals of 138° occur between two hexagons intersecting at C-C bonds of 1.42 Å, while the 60 dihedrals of 143° are observed between hexagons and pentagons at C-C bonds of 1.47 Å. NBO analysis reveals less pyramidal sp1.78 hybridization for carbons at the 1.42 Å bonds and more pyramidal sp2.13 hybridization for the 1.47 Å bonds. Electrostatic potential charges range from -0.04 a.u. to 0.04 a.u. on the carbon atoms. Second-order perturbation analysis indicates that delocalization interactions in the C-C bonds of 1.42 Å (143.70 kcal/mol) and 1.47 Å (34.98 kcal/mol) are 22% and 38% higher, respectively, than those in benzene. MP2/Def2SVP calculations yield a correlation energy of 13.49 kcal/mol per electron for C60, slightly higher than the 11.68 kcal/mol for benzene. However, the results from HOMO-LUMO calculations should be interpreted with caution. This study may assist in the rational design of fullerene C60 derivatives for CO2 reduction systems.

Abstract:The structural and electronic properties of N@ C60,P@ C60 and As@ C60 were investigated with quantum mechanics.Compared with isolated C60,the C60 cage deforms slightly,and the three doped atoms(N,P,As) lie in different positions in the cage.The interactions between the cage and the doped atom mainly cousist of charge transfer and spin-orbit interaction.Binding energies of these three compounds are 6.32,70.88,and-53.05 kJ/mol,respectively.The single occupied molecular orbital(SOMO) energy levels of those three doped atoms change and split because of the interaction with the cage.When electric field is applied,electron density shifts along the direction of the electric field.The energies of these molecules decrease as the electric field gets stronger.The molecular orbital energies,the gaps between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital,the SOMO energy levels,and the split energies va-ry considerably in the presence of electric field.

Abstract:The electronic structure and stability of a fullerenelike Si-60 cluster have been studied by the density functional theory with the local density approximation. Our results suggest that the icosahedral structure of Si-60 is an energy minimum, and the electronic structure near the Fermi level is similar to that of a C-60 duster. We have found that the C-60 cluster is a good candidate to stabilize the Si-60 cluster.

Abstract:Using full-potential linear-muffin-tin-orbital molecular-dynamics method, we have performed calculations on the structure and the binding energy of cluster Si-60. It is found that the stable structure for Si-60 cluster is a distorted truncated icosahedron, with T-h symmetry. Its fullerene cage structure remains, but it looks like a puckered ball. The lower symmetry and four distinct Si-Si bond lengths make the structure different from that with I-h symmetry and two C-C bond lengths in C-60.

Abstract:We used first-principle calculations to explore the electronic and transport properties of N@C60 molecule. The calculated results indicate that the N atom locates at either slight or significant off-center in C60 cage under various different chemical environments. The localized N atomic magnetic moment in N@C60 molecule is about 3.0 microB, which is not sensitive to the chemical environment, such as the carrier doping, the external electric field, and the molecule-substrate interaction. On the other hand, the magnetism of N@C60 can be effectively tuned by carrier doping and the cage chemical modification. The C60 cage with delocalized pi-electrons character demonstrates a significant shielding (about 80%) of the encapsulated N atom from the applied external electric field. We do not observe obvious transmission spin polarization in N@C60 molecular junctions and the transmission spectra of two spin channels are similar near the Fermi level.

Abstract:We study the electronic structure of C60 and C70 molecules within the tight-binding approximation. Our approach is based on recursive evaluations of the generating function, which provide the density of states of the system. Our results for C60 are consistent with previous calculations using very different methods, and we have also obtained results for the much-less-studied C70 case.

Abstract:We locate putative global minima for (C_60)_N clusters modelled by the potential of Pacheco and Prates-Ramalho up to N=105. These minima are based on icosahedral packing up to N=15, but above this size the lowest-energy structures are decahedral or close-packed. Although structures based on the 98-molecule Leary tetrahedron, which have been inferred from experiment, are not lowest in energy for this potential, an examination of the energetics of a growth sequence leading to the Leary tetrahedron lends further support to the experimental assignments. An analysis of the potential energy surface topography and the thermodynamics of two example clusters indicates that the multiple-funnel topography is likely to have a strong influence on the dynamics of structure formation and that solid-solid transitions driven by differences in vibrational entropy are likely to be common.

Abstract:The structural, electronic, vibrational, and magnetic properties of the C48N12 azafullerene and C60 are comparatively studied from the first-principles calculations. Full geometrical optimization and Mulliken charge analysis are performed. Electronic structure calculations of C48N12 show that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) is a doubly degenerate level of ag symmetry and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is a nondegenerate level of au symmetry. The calculated binding energy per atom and HOMO-LUMO energy gap of C48N12 are about 1 eV smaller than those of C60. Because of electron correlations, the HOMO-LUMO gap decreases about 5 eV and the binding energy per atom increases about 2 eV. The average second-order hyperpolarizability of C48N12 is about 55% larger than that of C60. Our vibrational frequency analysis predicts that C48N12 has 58 infrared-active and 58 Raman-active vibrational modes. Two different methods for calculating nuclear magnetic shielding tensors of C60 and C48N12 are compared, and we find that C48N12 exhibits eight C13 and two N15 NMR spectral signals. Our best-calculated results for C60 are in excellent agreement with experiment. Our results suggest that C48N12 has potential applications as semiconductor components, nonlinear optical materials, and possible building blocks for molecular electronics and photonic devices.

Abstract:In the alkali-metal doped C60, the charge transfer induces the distortion of the bond structure and forms the self-trapping electronic bound states. Our theory manifests: 1, the charge transfer reduces the symmetry of C60 from Ih to D5d. 2, Both the bond distortion and the self-trapping states possess layer structures and are localized in the equatorial area. 3, The carbon atoms in charged C60 are divided into eight layers with an inversion center, then there exist four nonequivalent groups of carbon atoms. It makes the NMR line split into a fine structure with strength ratio 1: 1: 2: 2. 4, The charged C60 has two self-trapping bound states, one is 0.06 eV above HOMO with odd parity and the other is 0.05 eV below LUMO with even parity.

Abstract:Science and technology related to C60 cage have attracted the attention and research interest of thousands of scientists and engineers over the past decade (Kroto et al. [1]). This attraction stems from C60’s beautiful symmetry, dazzling chemical and physical properties, and potential applications in nanotechnology (Zhang et al. [2]). The simulations are widely used to study or predict the vibrational behaviours of C60 cage (Wu et al. [3], Jiang et al. [4]). The available approaches can be mainly catalogued into the group theory model and the ab inito calculation (Adams et al. [5], Koruga et al. [6]). However, there has not yet been a more completed investigation for vibration of C60 cage in Raman domain from both the computational model and the experiments. So a direct computational model of covalent atom structure is our objective.

Abstract:Combining the extended cluster expansion method and the first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the structural stabilities of nitrogen doped C60 fullerene. With the structural recognition, we have calculated all possible isomers of C60-nNn (n = 1–4) to obtain their ground state structures using the first-principles method. For C60-nNn (n = 5–9) heterofullerenes, we have estimated the energy by the extended cluster expansion method to screen the candidates efficiently, followed by first-principles confirmation for the low-lying structures. For C60-nNn with more than 9 nitrogen atoms, we developed a classification method to select the candidates and successfully obtained the low-lying isomers. The most stable structures for C60-nNn (n = 3–11) we obtained have lower energies compared to the structures in previous studies. Notably, we have found 26 low-lying structures of C48N12 azafullerenes, from their 11.6 billion isomers.
