Abstract:The nanoscale Lycurgus cup arrays were hybrid structures of nanocups and nanoparticles with ultrasensitivity to refractive index change. In this study, an electrochemical localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor was developed by coupling electrochemistry to LSPR spectroscopy measurement on the nanoscale cup arrays (nanoCA). Based on the combination of electrochemistry and LSPR measurement, the electrochemical LSPR on nanoCA was observed with significant resonance wavelength shifts in electrochemical modulation. The synchronous implementation of cyclic voltammetry and optical transmission spectrum can be used to obtain multiply sensing information and investigate the enhancement for LSPR from electrochemical scanning. The electrochemical enhanced LSPR was utilized as biosensor to detect biomolecules. The electrochemical LSPR biosensor with synchronous electrochemical and optical implement showed higher sensitivity than that of conventional optical LSPR measurement. Detecting with multi-transducer parameters and high sensitivity, the electrochemical LSPR provided a promising approach for chemical and biological detection.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) associated with metal nanostructures has developed into a highly useful sensor technique. Optical LSPR spectroscopy of nanostructures often shows sharp absorption and scattering peaks, which can be used to probe several bio-molecular interactions. Here, we report nanoplasmonic biosensors using LSPR on nanocup arrays (nanoCA) to recognize bio-molecular binding for biochemical detection. These sensors can be modified to quantify binding of small molecules to proteins for odorant and explosive detections. Electrochemical LSPR biosensors can also be designed by coupling electrochemistry and LSPR spectroscopy measurements. Multiple sensing information can be obtained and electrochemical LSPR property can be investigated for biosensors. In some applications, the electrochemical LSPR biosensor can be used to quantify immunoreactions and enzymatic activity. Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized SPR (LSPR) effects have been shown as the principles of some highlysensitive sensors in recent decades. Due to the advances in nano-fabrication technology, the plasmon nano-array sensors based on SPR and LSPR phenomena have been widely used in chemical and bioloical analysis. Sensing with surface-enhanced field and sensing for refractive index changes are able to identify the analytes quantitatively and qualitatively. With the newly developed ultrasensitive plasmonic biosensors, platforms with excellent performance have been built for various biomedical applications, including point-of-care diagnosis and personalized medicine. In addition, flexible integration of plasmonics nano-arrays and combining them with electrochemical sensing have significantly enlarged the application scenarios of the plasmonic nano-array sensors, as well as improved the sensing accuracy.
Bio-electron Transfer Modulated Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensing with Charge Density Monitoring

Abstract:The analysis of reactant at different regions of the bioreaction interface is significant for the study on the influence of interface condition on bioreaction. In this study, we proposed a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensing platform for local charge density monitoring and corresponding analytes detection based on the bio-electron transfer modulation of plasmon resonance. Core-shell nanocomposites of polyaniline coated gold nanoparticles were synthesized for the enhanced sensitivity of plasmon resonance to applied electric potential. Tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) substrates modified with the nanocomposites were used as LSPR chip for optical and electrochemical measurements simultaneously. The charge sensitivity of LSPR was verified with external electric potential modulation theoretically and experimentally. Through layer-by-layer self-assembly immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOD) on the LSPR chips, the charge transfer monitoring during the bioreaction of glucose catalysis was further demonstrated based on the bio-electron transfer modulation of LSPR. By equivalent circuit method, the charge density of the LSPR chip were detected with optical extinction peak shifts, and the limit of detection was about 0.51 μC/cm2. This bio-electron transfer modulated LSPR provides a promising approach for the detection of spatial charge densities and the evaluation of bioreaction substances at different region of single chip.

Abstract:The simplification of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) detection can further promote the development of optical biosensing application in point-of-care testing. In this study, we proposed a simple light emitting diode (LED) based single-wavelength LSPR sensor modulated with bio-electron transfers for the detection of electroactive biomolecules. Indium tin oxide electrode loaded with nanocomposites of polyaniline coated gold nanorod was used as LSPR chip, and the applied electric potential was scanned at the LSPR chip for single-wavelength LSPR biosensing. Under the scanning of applied potentials, biological electron transfer of redox reaction was employed to demonstrate the bioelectronic modulation of single-wavelength LSPR for selective electroactive biomolecule detection. Without any additional recognition material, electroactive biomolecules uric acid and dopamine were detected directly with a sensitivity of 5.05 mu mol/L and 7.11 mu mol/L at their specific oxidation potentials, respectively. With the simplified optical configuration and selective bioelectronic modulation, the single-wavelength LSPR sensor is promising for the development of simple, low-cost, and high specificity optical biosensor for point-of-care testing of electroactive biomolecules. Mutual promotion of electrochemical-localized surface plasmon resonance on nanochip for sensitive sialic acid detection.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) induced charge separation were concentrated on the metal nanoparticles surface, which made it sensitive to the surface refractive index changes during optical sensing. Similarly, electrochemical detection was based on the electron transformation on the electrode surface. Herein, we fabricated a nanochip by decorating a nanocone-array substrate with gold nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles for dynamic electro-optical spectroscopy. Mercaptophenyl boronic acid (MPBA) was immobilized firmly on the nanochip by the metal-S bond for sensitive sialic acid sensing. Owing to the high stability of gold nanoparticles and the high sensitivity of silver nanoparticles, the nanochip showed good performance in LSPR detection with rich and high responses. Besides, the nanochip also showed sensitive electrical signals during electrochemical detection due to the excitation of the energetic charges from the nanoparticles surface to the reaction system. The dynamic electro-optical spectroscopy was based on a unique combination of LSPR and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). On the one hand, electrochemical signals activated the electrons on the nanochip to promote the propagation and resonance of surface plasmon. On the other hand, LSPR concentrated the electrons on the nanochip surface, which made the electrons easily driven to enhance the current in electrochemical detection. Results showed that mutual promotion of electrochemical-LSPR on nanochip covered a linear dynamic range from 0.05 mM to 5 mM on selective sialic acid detection with a low detection limit of 17 μM. The synchronous amplification of the electro-optical response during electrochemical-LSPR, opened up a new perspective for efficient and sensitive biochemical detection.

Abstract:The localized surface plasmon resonance of metal nanoparticles is the collective oscillation of electrons on particle surface. The localized electromagnetic interaction brings a series of novel functions and applications. Plasmonic nanomaterials have been the significant part of nanophotonics, since its' localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) can focus incident phonons on the nanoscale surface. The unique plasmonic property is highly sensitive to their size, shape, coupling between particles as well as local dielectric environment. These properties can be utilized for the development of new biosensing and bioimaging applications. To date, many LSPR sensing strategies have been developed with outstanding measurement capabilities, enabling detection down to the single-molecule level, including LSPR-based sensing, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, metal-enhanced fluorescence, dark-field light-scattering, metal-mediated fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Moreover, the unique optical stability of plasmonic nanoparticles enables them as ideal probes in cellular imaging. Here, recent examples on application of plasmonic nanostructures in sensing and bioimaging are summarized, and perspectives are provided as well.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures hold great promise in the areas of materials science, chemical and biological sensing. They have been intensively investigated owing to their desirable structure-defined electronic and optical properties and considerable catalytic capacities. Localized surface plasmon resonance is associated with the collective oscillation of dielectrically confined conduction electrons in plasmonic nanostructures and is often excited by coupling with electromagnetic radiation, resulting in spatial confinement and localized field enhancement, which have been widely studied for use in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy, even to a single-nanoparticle level. Notably, plasmonic nanoparticles can serve as nanoelectrodes with great potential in ultra-sensitive electrochemical detection. Thus, in this chapter, we discuss recent advances in the field of single-nanoparticle plasmonic spectroelectrochemistry. We focus on the fundamental theory as well as applications. Finally, the challenges that must be overcome in emerging key areas such as single-nanoparticle sensing and catalysis are highlighted.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance coupling effects (LSPR) have attracted much attention due to their interesting properties. This Letter demonstrates significant photoluminescence (PL) enhancement in the Au NS/CH3NH3PbI3-xClx heterostructures via the LSPR coupling. The observed PL emission enhancement is mainly attributed to the hot electron energy transfer effect related to the LSPR coupling. For the energy transfer effect, photo-generated electrons will be directly extracted into Au SPs, rather than relaxed into exciton states. This energy transfer process is much faster than the diffusion and relaxation time of free electrons, and may provide new ideas on the design of high-efficiency solar cells and ultrafast response photodetectors.

Abstract:Recently developed photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing systems represent a unique potential detection method for real-time analysis of chemical/biological molecules, while the low absorption of TiO2 nanomaterials in the visible wavelength region and the slow surface charge transfer efficiency limit the ultimate sensitivity. Here we develop a gold nanoparticle-decorated TiO2 nanowire sensor for PEC detection of protein binding. The direct attachment of Au nanoparticles to TiO2 nanowires offers strong surface plasmon resonance for electrochemical field effect amplification, yielding a similar to 100% increase of photocurrent density. In addition, the surface functionalization of gold nanoparticles allows for direct capturing of target proteins near the Au/TiO2 interface and thus substantially enhances the capability of attenuation of energy coupling between Au and TiO2, leading to much-improved sensor performance. As a proof of concept, cholera toxin subunit B has been robustly detected by the TiO2-Au nanowire sensor functionalized with ganglioside GM!, with a high sensitivity of 0.167 nM and excellent selectivity. Furthermore, the real-time feature of photoelectrochemical sensing enables direct measurement of binding kinetics between cholera toxin subunit B and GM!, yielding association and disassociation rate constants and an equilibrium constant K-d of 4.17 nM. This surface plasmon resonance-enhanced real-time, photoelectrochemical sensing design may lead to exciting biodetection capabilities with high sensitivity and real-time kinetic studies.

Abstract:In the last decade, plasmonic nanoparticles-based scattering imaging and spectroscopy has introduced the analysis and sensing to the single nanoparticle and molecule level, such as the biomolecules adsorption process and the quantitative detection of small molecules and ions. Recently, this technology has also been focus on the real-time and in-situ reaction monitoring, which is a new emerging branch of the single-nanoparticle imaging, revealing the reaction dynamic information and the related controlling factors. In this mini-review, recent applications of plasmon resonance scattering imaging and spectroscopy in the real-time reaction monitoring in the past 5 years are highlighted and discussed.

Abstract:Optical sensors based on nanoparticles induced Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance are more sensitive to real-time chemical and biological sensing, which have attracted intensive attentions in many fields. In this paper, we establish a simulation model based on nanoparticles imprinted polymer to increase sensitivity of the LSPR sensor by detecting the changes of Surface Plasmon Resonance signals. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of parameters effects to absorption peak and light field distribution are highlighted. Two-dimensional simulated color maps show that LSPR lead to centralization of the light energy around the gold nanoparticles, Transverse Magnetic wave and total reflection become the important factors to enhance the light field in our simulated structure. Fast Fourier Transfer analysis shows that the absorption peak of the surface plasmon resonance signal resulted from gold nanoparticles is sharper while its wavelength is bigger by comparing with silver nanoparticles; a double chain structure make the amplitude of the signals smaller, and make absorption wavelength longer; the absorption peak of enhancement resulted from nanopore arrays has smaller wavelength and weaker amplitude in contrast with nanoparticles. These simulation results of the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance can be used as an enhanced transduction mechanism for enhancement of sensitivity in recognition and sensing of target analytes in accordance with different requirements.

Abstract:Novel metal nanoparticles with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) have excellent optical and physical properties including strong absorption and scattering spectroscopy, photostability, and active catalytic ability. These properties enable them to be applied in variable sensitive sensors, functional nanoprobes and act as efficient catalysts. Particularly, the measurements at single nanoparticle level promote the developments of plasmonics, even to single molecule level detection. In this chapter, we briefly introduce the fundamentals and applications of the LSPR property of metal nanoparticles, and the useful devices for the investigation of single plasmonics.

Abstract:Recently developed localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing has emerged as a unique label-free technology owing to the high sensitivity and robust detection. Herein, a feasible PEC biosensing platform based on receptor-functionalized plasmonic Au-MoS2 nanosheets was designed for the capture of target proteins. The biomolecular interaction substantially enhances the hot electron transfer efficiency between Au and MoS2, leading to a direct change in electrocatalytic current on MoS2 as electricity readout signal. The biosensor exhibits excellent analytical performance for protein detection in a range from 41.7 nM to 4.17 mu M, with a detection limit of 4.17 nM. Additionally, this system also affords real-time analysis of binding kinetics between antigen and antibody, allowing for obtaining their rate constants of association/disassociation (k(on)/k(off)) and equilibrium constant K-d of 3.95 mu M. LSPR-enhanced label-free PEC monitoring system, without the participation of ultraviolet excitation and sacrifice agents, bears no harm to biomolecules and shows high-sensitivity detection, which holds great potential applications in clinical and biological analyses. Abstract:Plasmonics has recently come into focus as a very promising technology for high-performance photocatalysis. The hot charge carriers together with the enhanced electric field generated by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation are responsible for the enhanced performance of photocatalysis. Up to now, much work including theoretical and experimental researches has been performed to investigate the plasmon-related enhancement mechanism. Combining plasmonics and electrochemistry at the nanoscale emerges as a new challenge for further widening the application of plasmonic effect. This review summarizes the fundamental principle of LSPR, the mechanism of plasmon-enhanced electrochemistry, and the different electrochemical reactions activated by plasmonics.
Plasmonic Nanostructure Biosensors: A Review

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructure biosensors based on metal are a powerful tool in the biosensing field. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can be classified into localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and propagating surface plasmon polariton (PSPP), based on the transmission mode. Initially, the physical principles of LSPR and PSPP are elaborated. In what follows, the recent development of the biosensors related to SPR principle is summarized. For clarity, they are categorized into three groups according to the sensing principle: (i) inherent resonance-based biosensors, which are sensitive to the refractive index changes of the surroundings; (ii) plasmon nanoruler biosensors in which the distances of the nanostructure can be changed by biomolecules at the nanoscale; and (iii) surface-enhanced Raman scattering biosensors in which the nanostructure serves as an amplifier for Raman scattering signals. Moreover, the advanced application of single-molecule detection is discussed in terms of metal nanoparticle and nanopore structures. The review concludes by providing perspectives on the future development of plasmonic nanostructure biosensors.

Abstract:We present a simplified yet sophisticated variation to localised surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, which makes use of naked or non-functionalised, nanoparticle templates. These nanoparticle templates, produced with a rapid and scalable process, namely laser annealing, were used as a highly sensitive surface sensor to monitor the adsorption of both metallic lead and a lead salt from aqueous solutions, showing a measurable optical response due to a surface abundance of lead as low as 100 ppm from 0.3 ml of Pb2SO4 solutions, with concentrations less than 20 ppm. This proposed method enables the end user to rapidly assess the surface abundance of lead from a simple optical reflectance measurement and could serve as a platform for in situ analysis within water filtration and cleaning systems.
