Abstract:The mixed-acid systems of four Lewis acids (FeCl3, CrCl3, ZnCl2, and CuCl2) combining three Bronsted acids (H2SO4, HCl, and H3PO4) were evaluated for the decomposition of glucose to produce levtilinic acid (LA). The CrCl3-H3PO4 system had a strong synergic catalytic activity for the decomposition of glucose to LA. The effects of the ratio of CrCl3 and H3PO4 on glucose, fructose, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) decompositions were investigated. The mixed-acid system showed the strongest synergic catalytic activity for glucose, fructose, and 5-HMF decompositions when the ratio of CrCl3 in the CrCl3-H3PO4 system was 0.4-0.5. To probe the synergic catalysis mechanism of the CrCl3-H3PO4 system, the synergic catalytic activities of CrCl3-phosphates (KH2PO4, K2HPO4, and K3PO4) systems on glucose decomposition were also evaluated. The possible synergic catalysis mechanisms were proposed. This study provides insights for the synergic catalysis mechanism of hexose conversion to yield LA.

Abstract:Template-free synthesis of Sn-Beta zeolite was realized by oil-heated crystallization within 36 h. The SnBeta zeolite with a high surface area of 623 m(2) g-1 can efficiently catalyze the one-pot hydrothermal conversion of various sugars to lactic acid. Under the reaction conditions of 200 degrees C with a helium pressure of 4.0 MPa, the conversion of all sugars exceeds 98% within 30 min, and the yield of lactic acid reaches as high as 67.1%. For glucose conversion to lactic acid, further experiments demonstrate the essential role of the Lewis acid site at the different stages of the reaction, which is attributed to the isolated skeleton Sn in the zeolite, consistent with our and previous computational studies on this reaction. Our calculations further reveal the important role of the Bronsted acid site of moderate strength, such as lactic acid itself, in the conversion of glyceraldehyde to pyruvaldehyde, an important step in the formation of lactic acid from glucose, resulting in self-catalysis.

Abstract:Formic acid-induced controlled-release hydrolysis of sugar-rich microalgae (Scenedesmus) over the Sn-Beta catalyst was found to be a highly efficient process for producing lactic acid as a platform chemical. One-pot reaction with a very high lactic acid yield of 83.0% was realized in a batch reactor using water as the solvent. Under the attack of formic acid, the cell wall of Scenedesmus was disintegrated, and hydrolysis of the starch inside the cell was strengthened in a controlled-release mode, resulting in a stable and relatively low glucose concentration. Subsequently, the Sn-Beta catalyst was employed for the efficient conversion of glucose into lactic acid with stable catalytic performance through isomerization, retro-aldol and de-/rehydration reactions. Thus, the hydrolysis of polysaccharides and the catalytic conversion of the monosaccharide into lactic acid was realized by the combination of an organic BrOnsted acid and a heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst.

Abstract:The thermocatalytic conversion of hexose into valuable chemicals such as methyl lactate under mild conditions is very appealing. Here, we report that Mo, Mg co-modified Sn-β catalyst can effectively catalyze the transformation of glucose and fructose into alkyl lactate at moderate temperatures. A maximum yield of around 35% of methyl lactate was achieved from the conversion of glucose in methanol at 100°C over Sn-β catalyst modified with 3 wt% Mo and 0.5 wt% Mg. However, up to 82.8% yield of ethyl lactate was obtained in the case of fructose in ethanol upon the same catalytic condition, suggesting a significant solvent effect. The Mo species plays a key role to enable the retro-aldol condensation of fructose, in which the competing side reactions are significantly suppressed with the assistance of neighboring Mg species probably through a synergetic effect of Lewis acid-base.
Synergistic Effect of Different Species in Stannic Chloride Solution on the Production of Levulinic Acid from Biomass

Abstract:Metal chloride has shown high potential in biomass conversion to valuable chemicals, but the nature of active species and the corresponding performances on each successive reaction step need further elucidation. In this work, SnCl4 was found to exhibit satisfactory catalytic activity, achieving 64.6 mol % yield of levulinic acid from corncob residue. The levulinic acid obtained could be further converted to more valuable ethyl levulinate with 85% yield without any extra catalyst addition. In water medium, the hydrolysis of SnCl4 resulted in the formation of stannic oxide, H+ and Cl–, which showed a synergistic effect and all contributed to levulinic acid production. It was demystified that Cl– promoted cellulose hydrolysis, and the formed H+ as Brønsted acid mainly contributed to cellulose hydrolysis and fructose dehydration, as well as HMF decomposition to levulinic acid. Sn(IV) species facilitated both glucose-to-fructose isomerization and fructose consumption yielding undesirable polymers, but exhibited a negative influence on cellulose hydrolysis. The proposed kinetic model showed a good fit with the experimental result, and further confirmed the proposed catalytic mechanism. The insights reported here might give some useful information for the development of effective catalysts to produce valuable chemicals directly from raw lignocelluloses.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of the acid characteristic of Sn-MFI zeolite on catalytic performance in the transformation of dihydroxyacetone to methyl lactate, multiple characterization and experimental methods were employed. Firstly, the transformation between Lewis and Brönsted acid sites was initially confirmed by 31P-TMP NMR method, owing to the introduction of CH3OH by framework Sn species to donate protons. It is found that Lewis acid sites are cooperative with Brönsted acid sites to boost the primary reactions of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) to methyl lactate (ML). Yet, too high ratio of Brönsted acid sites to Lewis acid sites favors the generation of side product pyruvic aldehyde dimethyl acetal (PADA). That is because Brönsted acid sites majorly catalyze the dehydration of DHA, the addition of pyruvaldehyde (PA) with methanol and the addition of hemiacetal (HA) with methanol to PADA, whereas Lewis acidic framework Sn sites are responsible for the isomerization of HA to ML, which can be further verified by the isotopic labeling experiments. Therefore, this study provides a definite and systematical insight on the impacts of acid property on product selectivity.

Abstract:In this work, acid-catalyzed conversion of cellulose into levulinic acid in a biphasic solvent system was developed. Compared to a series of catalysts investigated in this study, the Amberlyst-15 as a more efficient acid catalyst was used in the hydrolysis of cellulose and further dehydration of derived intermediates into levulinic acid. Besides, the mechanism of biphasic solvent system in the conversion of cellulose was studied in detail, and the results showed biphasic solvent system can promote the conversion of cellulose and suppress the polymerization of the by-products (such as lactic acid).The reaction conditions, such as temperature, time, and catalyst loading were changed to investigate the effect on the yield of levulinic acid. The results indicated that an appealing LA yield of 59.24% was achieved at 200°C and 180 min with a 2:1 ratio of Amberlyst-15 catalyst and cellulose in GVL/H 2 O under N 2 pressure. The influence of different amounts of NaCl addition to this reaction was also investigated. This study provides an economical and environmental-friendly method for the acid-catalyzed conversion of cellulose and high yield of the value-added chemical.

Abstract:To eco-friendly catalyze glucose to levulinic acid, recyclable acid catalyst has been researched. The synthesis process of propyl sulfonic acid functionalized SBA-15 was improved and the hydrophobic treatment was performed. The structure and functional groups of materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and simultaneous thermal analysis. The catalytic activity, recyclability and hydrothermal stability of CH3-SBA-15-SO3H material were researched. The highest yield of levulinic acid at 61.56% was obtained at 180 ℃ for 2.5 h in γ-GVL-water solvent system, and the yield of levulinic acid was only decreased by 2% after 4 times reuse. The high degree of silicon polycondension and hydrophobic surface of CH3-SBA-15-SO3H were the key to maintain the hydrothermal stability. The CH3-SBA-15-SO3H solid acid had great potential in development and utilization of biomass resources.

Abstract:Enhancing the yield of alkyl lactate from sugars is in great demand but challengeable to accomplish. Here we report a facile but efficient route to make this by employing a hierarchical and Sn-containing Beta zeolite (Sn-Beta-H). The hierarporosity in the Sn-Beta-H facilitates the conversion of sugars into important intermediates for producing alkyl lactate in the competition with undesirable side reactions, thus outperforming the conventional Sn-zeolite catalysts in yielding alkyl lactate from a wide scope of sugars. Particularly, the yield of alkyl lactate could reach as high as 72.1% from sucrose. Importantly, the Sn-Beta-H is stable and can be easily recycled for five times with constant catalytic performances.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of biomass sugars to lactate is a great challenge due to the difficulty in regulating the active centers of the catalyst to match the cascade reaction. In this paper, a new process was developed by using a hybrid catalyst composed of two carbon-based catalysts ZnC1 and ZnC2 with different acidic and basic active sites. The catalytic performance of these two catalysts as well as their hybrid with different mixed mass ratio was investigated in fructose conversion to ethyl lactate (EL). Both ZnC1 and ZnC2 could offer abundant medium and strong basic sites, which are effective for the [3 + 3] retro-aldol condensation of fructose to glyceraldehyde (GLA) and 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA), while the H + protons generated in situ by interaction with the hydroxyl groups in alcohol were responsible for the conversion of GLA and DHA to EL via dehydration, acetalization and rearrangement reactions. For these reasons, the hybrid catalyst afforded EL yield of 78.2% with turnover frequency of 43.4 mmol⋅h −1 ⋅g −1 and total selectivity of 98.2% reacting in ethanol at 220 °C, which are far higher than the previously reported values. Combined with the catalyst characterization, apparent kinetic modeling and DFT calculation, the catalytic reaction mechanism was clarified. The hybrid catalyst demonstrated good anti-leaching stability, while the deactivation was mainly resulted from coking coverage of the active sites. The research not only helps design and prepare the catalysts with bifunctional acidic and basic sites, but also deepens the insight into the conversion of biomass-derived sugars to value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Direct synthesis of lactide from concentrated lactic acid (LA) is an energy-efficient method, which is of great significance to reduce the cost of polylactic acid production. It is difficult to produce lactide with high yield from commercial concentrated LA due to the great quantity of LA oligomers. Herein, the hierarchical Sn-beta (Sn-beta-M) zeolite was prepared as a catalyst for the conversion of 97 wt% LA to lactide with yield of 86.5% in 3 h. The mesoporosity in Sn-beta-M characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption test shortened the diffusion path way in the micropores, which facilitated the fast escape of lacide avoiding decyclization and oligomerization. L3A and LnA’s conversion to lactide may be attributed to the Sn sites present in mesopores. The Sn4+ coordinated in Sn-beta-M framework, exhibited strong Lewis acidity and could act as the active center for the synthesis of lactide. We speculated that the Sn and the surrounding O in Sn-beta-M acted as strong Lewis acid sites and weak base sites respectively in mediating C–O bond formation of lactide from L2A and LmA (m≥3).

Abstract:Lactic acid is an important platform feedstock for synthesizing various chemicals. Lactic acid is normally converted from any sugar such as glucose, and Sn-β zeolite is an effective catalyst. In this study, β zeolite with different Si/Al ratios was prepared and characterized. Sn precursor is reacted with β zeolite by high-energy mixing and introduced into the framework of β zeolite to obtain Sn-β zeolite with different Si/Al ratios. The physicochemical properties of Sn-β zeolite were characterized by XRD, FTIR, N2 physical adsorption, UV Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and pyridine adsorption FTIR. The results showed that when the Si/Al molar ratio of β zeolite was less than 45, the skeleton load of Sn in β zeolite increased effectively with the decrease in aluminum content, and the Lewis acid and Brønsted acid site numbers could be improved. As the Si/Al ratio exceeded 45, the increase in Sn load in β zeolite slowed down, and the Lewis acid and Brønsted acid site numbers were decreased. The results from the catalytic conversion of glucose to lactic acid confirmed that the too high Si/Al ratio caused a decrease conversion rate. The highest performance of the prepared Sn-β zeolites with the highest catalytic efficiency had a glucose conversion rate of 96.69% and lactic acid yield of 39.42% within 7 h at 190 °C in a pressure reactor.

Abstract:Biomass is a renewable alternative to fossil fuels and a valuable source of chemicals. In this study, a facile and efficient method was established to improve the selectivity of methyl lactate (MLA) for the homogeneous Lewis acid catalyzed chemical conversion of glucose and methanol. The effects of catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, and reaction time were systematically investigated, with an emphasis on the variation trends of MLA and other by-products. Through process optimization, the best catalyst molar ratio was 0.075 to 0.1, the reaction temperature was 170 to 180 °C, and the reaction time was 3 h. Under these conditions, the conversion of glucose in methanol exceeded 98%, and the yield of MLA was greater than 40%.

Abstract:The synthesis of biofuel γ-valerolactone (GVL) from accessible biomass is an attractive and challenging goal. Here, we report an efficient, one-pot, and mild strategy for the efficient production of GVL from various biomass saccharides without using any homogeneous acid as a co-catalyst and molecular hydrogen as a hydrogen donor. A versatile porous tin-containing material (Sn(M)-S) was designed as an individual heterogeneous catalyst. As high as 68.4% yield of GVL form glucose was achieved in the presence of ammonia borane as a solid hydrogen donor under mild conditions, with GVL yields of 76.2%, 68.9%, 62.5%, and 52.2% being obtained from fructose, sucrose, cellobiose, and cellulose, respectively. The synergistic effect of Sn and sulfonic acid group in Sn(M)-S not only provides appropriate Lewis acid sites to promote the isomerization of glucose into fructose but also affords abundant Brønsted sites for the following conversion steps. Moreover, Sn(M)-S(1) showed good stability and reusability during consecutive recycles.

Abstract:Levan produced by Gluconobacter spp. has great potential in biotechnological applications. However, Gluconobacter spp. can synthesize organic acids during fermentation, resulting in environmental acidification. Few studies have focused on the effects of environmental acidification on levan synthesis. This study revealed that the organic acids, mainly gluconic acid (GA) and 2-keto-gluconic acid (2KGA) secreted by Gluconobacter sp. MP2116 created a highly acidic environment (pH < 3) that inhibited levan biosynthesis. The levansucrase derived from strain MP2116 had high enzyme activity at pH 4.0 ∼ pH 6.5. When the ambient pH was less than 3, the enzyme activity decreased by 67 %. Knocking out the mgdh gene of membrane-bound glucose dehydrogenase (mGDH) in the GA and 2KGA synthesis pathway in strain MP2116 eliminated the inhibitory effect of high acid levels on levansucrase function. As a result, the levan yield increased from 7.4 g/l (wild-type) to 18.8 g/l (Δmgdh) during fermentation without pH control. This study provides a new strategy for improving levan production by preventing the inhibition of polysaccharide synthesis by environmental acidification.

Abstract:It is a green and environment-friendly strategy to use biomass to assist the synthesis of catalysts and use the prepared catalysts for biomass utilization. In this study, aluminum-rich silicon-phosphorus-aluminum nanosheet (Al-SPAN) was synthesized with biomass amino acids as additives for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone. Compared with commercial Al 2 O 3 , Al-SPAN showed greatly improved catalytic performance for the reaction. The conversion of ethyl levulinate was increased by 47% and the yield of γ-valerolactone was increased by 52%. The effects of different alcohol on the reaction properties were investigated, with isopropanol used as a safe and efficient hydrogen source. The catalyst has good stability with little change in reaction performance after five cycles.

Synergistic roles of B/L acids and hierarchical micro-mesoporous structures for the unexpected isomerization of β-pinene over dual-modified MOR zeolite by inorganic/organic bases

Abstract:The isomerization of β-pinene is an important reaction to synthesize spices, such as camphene, limonene, terpinene, and terpinolene, among which terpinene and terpinolene are particularly difficult to be obtained. Herein, MOR zeolite modified by both inorganic base (NaOH) and organic base (TEAOH) was conducted, which showed high catalytic activity for the isomerization of β-pinene to high-added value spices of terpinene and terpinolene. Different from the zeolite catalyst modified by solely inorganic base or organic base, both high conversion of β-pinene and high selectivity for terpinene and terpinolene could be achieved over the dual-modified zeolite catalyst. Based on the various characterizations, catalytic reaction results and comparison studies, the roles of inorganic base and organic base were revealed and possible reaction mechanism was described. The modification by inorganic base was mainly to introduce additional mesopores in the MOR zeolite, which had important influence on the conversion of β-pinene through accelerating the diffusion and mass transfer of various bulky organic molecules in the reaction system. The modification by organic base was mainly to tune the Brønsted/Lewis (B/L) acid property, which had important impact on the selectivity of products. In contrast, the zeolite modified by solely inorganic base mainly showed Lewis acidity, which led to camphene and limonene as the main products; the zeolite modified by solely organic base mainly showed Brønsted acidity, which produced camphene, terpinene and terpinolene as the main products. The dual-modified zeolite catalyst by inorganic/organic bases could achieve 99.5% conversion of β-pinene with the total selectivity for terpinene and terpinolene as high as 70.9%. In addition, the catalyst showed high reaction-recycling stability, which could maintain the catalytic performance up to 10 recycles.
