Abstract:The biggest advantage of employing virtualization in cloud is the ability to provision resource flexibly which makes "pay-as-use" model possible. However, since the workload of virtual machine constantly changes, it is still a challenge that efficiently schedule resource by migrating virtual machines among lots of hosts, especially with multi-objective to meet, like power and QoS constraints. In this paper, we present a dynamic resource scheduling solution, named Smart-DRS, which can well determines when to schedule, which to schedule, and where to schedule. It is an integrated framework that aims to deal well with hotspot mitigation, load balancing and server consolidation which are classic problems to solve in on-demand clouds. The experimental results show that our framework strikes a balance between efficiency, overhead and instantaneity.

Abstract:Nowadays, mobile devices are ubiquitous in people's everyday life and applications on mobile devices are becoming increasingly resource-hungry. However, the resources on mobile devices are limited. Mobile cloud computing addresses the resource scarcity problem of mobile devices by offloading computation and/or data from mobile devices into the cloud. In the converging progress of mobile computing and cloud computing, the cloudlet is an important complement to the client-cloud hierarchy. This paper presents an extensive survey of researches on cloudlet based mobile computing. We first retrospect the evolution of cloudlet based mobile computing. After that, we review the existing works on cloudlet based computation offloading and data offloading. Then we introduce two examples of commercial cloudlet products. At last, we discuss the current situation, the challenges and future directions of this area. © 2015 IEEE.

Abstract:As a joint initiative of WHO and ITU, mHealth is becoming a feasible tool to offer data-intensive healthcare services online. In general, each kind of mHealth application has user-specific service-quality requirements that could be satisfied in the cost of bandwidth overconsumption. In any mobile network, bandwidth overconsumption is selfishly competing with limited radio resources. This phenomenon is further magnified by the "best-effort" service pattern inherited from IP networking, and the influence from interference, fading, and other mobility effects on unreliable radio channels. To enrich mHealth applications, we propose a Service-Mapping Adaptive Radio Transmission (SMART) scheduling algorithm, in which system parameters (QCI, CQI, MCS in AMC, etc.) are employed to enable "better than best effort" packet-switching services in full-IP mobile networks (e.g. LTE/LTE-Advanced). In this proposal, the designed scheduling metric is a self-adaptive mechanism that can combine mobile service-quality inspection and transmission pattern recognition dynamically. System-level simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposal can obtain approximately 31.25 percent gain on average, in contrast to existing solutions. Additionally, the runtime complexity of this solution is lowered to O(K log K), where K is the number of mHealth users within a cell.

Abstract:Cloud computing has been the most prevalent technology in the past few years and many prominent enterprises have prompted their cloud systems, preparing for the coming age of cloud computing. We can predict that the mobile area will take on a boom with the advent of this new concept. While due to the inherent characteristics of mobile environment, challenges like mobility, heterogeneity and low band-width will hinder the advancement of this incorporation. In this paper we will introduce a new concept and an abstraction derived from mobile agent-Universal Mobile Service Cell to shield the unequivalence of heterogeneous distributed systems between mobile devices and the cloud. Then scheduling the cell plays a key role in the mobile cloud computing. Here we adopt the Genetic Algorithm to meet this challenge. Abstract:Recent trends show that Internet traffic is increasingly dominated by content, which is accompanied by the exponential growth of traffic. To cope with this phenomena, network caching is introduced to utilize the storage capacity of diverse network devices. In this paper, we first summarize four basic caching placement strategies, i.e., local caching, Device-to-Device (D2D) caching, Small cell Base Station (SBS) caching and Macrocell Base Station (MBS) caching. However, studies show that so far, much of the research has ignored the impact of user mobility. Therefore, taking the effect of the user mobility into consideration, we proposes a joint mobility-aware caching and SBS density placement scheme (MS caching). In addition, differences and relationships between caching and computation offloading are discussed. We present a design of a hybrid computation offloading and support it with experimental results, which demonstrate improved performance in terms of energy cost. Finally, we discuss the design of an incentive mechanism by considering network dynamics, differentiated user's quality of experience (QoE) and the heterogeneity of mobile terminals in terms of caching and computing capabilities.

Abstract:Mobile multimedia computing has become ubiquitous in everyday life. However, mobile device users involved in resource-demanding visual applications such as video streaming often encounter performance degradations due to their mobile devices' intrinsic constraints in processing power, storage, and battery capacity. Cloud computing can be explored to circumvent such problems thanks to the vast resources available in the cloud. Mobile video cloud computing has thus emerged as an important research and development topic to achieve high-performance, innovative networked video applications. This chapter discusses the recent advances in mobile video cloud technologies and applications. The authors investigate mobile video cloud systems starting with the various mobile cloud paradigms and then present challenges and solutions of mobile video cloud management for mobility, context, and security. Furthermore, the authors examine the latest video coding standards and explore methods based on parallelisation and scalability for their optimised application over mobile clouds, followed by three highlighted mobile cloud video applications including streaming, transcoding, and gaming. Finally, future directions in this area are envisioned.

Abstract:Recently, with the advent of Internet of things, mobile devices are expected to carry on more and more computation intensive applications, and mobile cloud computing also comes in to help mitigate the burden of mobile devices. However, due to the rapidly growing density of mobile devices, the current single cloud environment will still encounter resource depletion, which will lead to application offloading failure and user dissatisfaction. In order to enhance the scalability and reliability of application offloading service in mobile cloud computing, we study the heterogeneous mobile cloud, which integrates mobile cloudlet with infrastructure-based cloudlet. In such a scenario, when the infrastructure-based cloudlet becomes unavailable due to insufficient resource, mobile cloudlet can help to provide computation offloading service. We develop a centralized task scheduling algorithm to select reliable worker nodes in mobile cloudlet for the offloaded tasks. Simulation results show that heterogeneity of cloud resource can enhance scalability of offloading service efficiently. Also, the proposed scheduling algorithm can extend the network lifetime and keep balance of energy consumption in the mobile cloudlet.

Abstract:With the growing popularity of mobile devices, a new type of peer-to-peer communication mode for mobile cloud computing has been introduced. By applying a variety of short-range wireless communication technologies to establish connections with nearby mobile devices, we can construct a mobile cloudlet in which each mobile device can either works as a computing service provider or a service requester. Although the paradigm of mobile cloudlet is cost-efficient in handling computation-intensive tasks, the understanding of its corresponding service mode from a theoretic perspective is still in its infancy. In this paper, we first propose a new mobile cloudletassisted service mode named Opportunistic task Scheduling over Co-located Clouds (OSCC), which achieves flexible cost-delay tradeoffs between conventional remote cloud service mode and mobile cloudlets service mode. Then, we perform detailed analytic studies for OSCC mode, and solve the energy minimization problem by compromising among remote cloud mode, mobile cloudlets mode and OSCC mode. We also conduct extensive simulations to verify the effectiveness of the proposed OSCC mode, and analyze its applicability. Moreover, experimental results show that when the ratio of data size after task execution over original data size associated with the task is smaller than 1 (i.e., r < 1) and the average meeting rate of two mobile devices lambda is larger than 0: 00014, our proposed OSCC mode outperforms existing service modes.

Abstract:The rapid development of the blue economy has generated fast growth in the demand for maritime communications, which requires strong network capacities. Due to the poor climate and construction conditions, maritime communications significantly lag behind their terrestrial counterparts, which hinders the application and optimization of maritime mobile services. Recently, the cloud-edge-terminal (CET) architecture has enabled terrestrial mobile users to use all devices and facilities collaboratively, which effectively alleviates network pressure and improves users' quality of experience (QoE). To bring these advantages to the maritime scenario, this article proposes an integrated satellite-maritime CET architecture, and considers the mobility of maritime vehicles in network resource management, including integrated transmission optimization, CET offloading, and proactive caching with resource-sharing maritime edge clusters. These proposals can provide a new perspective for future maritime network management to be more suitable for the mobility of maritime communication entities.

Abstract:Application offloading has been a popular approach to alleviate a tussle between resource-constrained smartphones and resource-hungry mobile applications. In this article, for leveraging cloud computing, we propose a unified elastic computing platform that supports application offloading for mobile devices, reducing energy consumption on smartphones. The proposed computing fabric consists of an infrastructure-based cloud and an ad hoc virtual cloud formed by a cluster of smartphones. We present both an offloading policy and a mechanism under which applications are delegated to the cloud for execution. For the former, we establish a unified optimization framework to decide where each task of the application should be executed - on the standalone smartphone, in the ad hoc virtual cloud, or in the infrastructure-based cloud. For the latter, we provide implementation strategies for application offloading. The proposed elastic computing platform can enhance the scalability of smartphones, fueling a new wave of innovative mobile applications, for example, anti-virus and gaming on smartphones.

Abstract:Multimedia streaming applications have disruptively occupied bandwidth in wire line Internet, yet today's fledging mobile media streaming still poses many challenges in efficient content distribution due to the form of mobile devices. At the same time, cloud computing is gaining power as a promising technology to transform IT industry and many eminent enterprises are developing their own cloud infrastructures. However, the lack of applications hinders clouds' large-scale implementation. In this paper, we envision a cloud-assisted power-efficient mobile P2P media streaming architecture that addresses the weakness of today's wireless access technologies. Clouds are responsible for storage and computing demanding tasks, and mobile devices colocating with each other share bandwidth and cooperatively stream media content to distribute the load. We first model interactions among mobile devices as a coalition game, and then discuss the optimal chunk retrieval scheduling. Finally, we draw on realistic mobile phone data and utilize an ARIMA model for colocation duration prediction among mobile devices.

Abstract:A new mobile cloud architecture has recently been proposed, where neighbouring mobile devices are brought together as a cohort for resource sharing. Thus, a mobile application can be partitioned into multiple tasks and be performed on different mobile devices, without offloading some tasks to remote cloud services for their processing. In this work, we consider a broker-based architecture, where a proper reward mechanism is used to incentivize users to share their available resources as a service with other mobile devices. Within such a system, each mobile device is rational and justified in maximizing its revenue by using its relatively limited resources to complete the requests allocated by the broker. How to select the appropriate service requests from all incoming requests and complete the selected requests on time so that the revenue can be maximized has become a critical issue for resource sharing. To address this issue, we propose a joint resource sharing and request scheduling approach called RESP (REvenue-driven Service Provision for mobile devices) in a move towards a lightweight one-phase approach for handling request selection, request scheduling and resource allocation for mobile devices. We evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithm through a number of experiments and the experimental results validate the efficacy of our approach.

Abstract:In order to fully exploit the high speed broadband multimedia services, prolonging the battery life of user equipment is critical, especially for the current smartphones. In this work, we investigate the problem of designing a content sharing collaborative mobile cloud (CMC) via user cooperation to reduce the energy consumption at terminal side. Given a group of users interested in downloading the same content from an operator, a grouping and scheduling based algorithm is proposed in order to select the proper data receiver in each scheduling time. The objective of the presented algorithm is to obtain energy efficiency as well as user fairness among the members of CMC. The proposed scheme can take both base station and terminal aspects into consideration and it is shown that the significant energy saving performance can be achieved without scarifying and drowning the battery of any terminal.

Abstract:Recently, mobile ad hoc clouds have emerged as a promising technology for mobile cyber-physical system applications, such as mobile intelligent video surveillance and smart homes. Resource management plays a key role in maximizing resource utilization and application performance in mobile ad hoc clouds. Unlike resource management in traditional distributed computing systems, such as clouds, resource management in a mobile ad hoc cloud poses numerous challenges owing to the node mobility, limited battery power, high latency, and the dynamic network environment. The real-time requirements associated with mobile cyber-physical system applications make the problem even more challenging. Currently, existing resource management systems for mobile ad hoc clouds are not designed to support mobile cyber-physical system applications and energy-efficient communication between application tasks. In this paper, we propose a new energy-efficient resource management system for mobile ad hoc clouds. The proposed system consists of two layers: a network layer and a middleware layer. The network layer provides ad hoc network and communication services to the middleware layer and shares the collected information in order to allow efficient and robust resource management decisions. It uses (1) a transmission power control mechanism to improve energy efficiency and network capacity, (2) link lifetimes to reduce communication and energy consumption costs, and (3) link quality to estimate data transfer times. The middleware layer is responsible for the discovery, monitoring, migration, and allocation of resources. It receives application tasks from users and allocates tasks to nodes on the basis of network and node-level information.

Abstract:Recently the cloud computing technology has emerged as a new information technology infrastructure for the fast developing IT industry. In cloud computing, information is permanently stored in large-scale data centers on the Internet all over the world and temporarily accessed and cached on clients including desktops and portable PCs, sensors, etc. With the “cloud” as a metaphor for the Internet, cloud computing promises to deliver massively scalable IT-enabled data, software, and hardware capabilities as a service to external clients with Internet accesses. And the highly scalable computation capability of the cloud data centers can further assist and accelerate most of our computation intensive services and works effectively. Therefore the cloud computing has been envisioned as the key technology to achieve economies of scale in the deployment and operation of IT solutions. Regarding recent advances in mobile communication technologies, a new wave of user demands for rich mobile service experience has been fueled. Mobile users always expect broadband Internet access wherever they go, interact with each other via social networks while moving; furthermore, they are seeking ubiquitous access to a wealth of media-based contents and services. Because mobile devices are resource limited inherently, it is essential for the cloud to provide computational support for many media-rich applications. The combination of mobile media and cloud computing highly arises many technical challenges, and the fundamental tension between resource-hungry multimedia streams and power-limitedmobile devices has to be resolved. The effort for providing a universal rich-media experience across any screen is typically hindered by the heterogeneity amongst ever-evolving mobile devices, as manifested in their different physical form factors, middleware platforms, and interactive functions. Furthermore the developments of innovative pervasive mobile services, e.g., mobile video streaming, rich media dissemination, surveillance, gaming, e-health care, etc., can be greatly facilitated by Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) platform employing emerged and emerging technologies. This issue consists of five papers addressing the various aspects ofMCC, such as mobile cloud computing services and applications, mobile cloud gaming, integration of MCC with Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), as well as the relationship between cloud computing and big data. The issue opens with a comprehensive survey on diverse ways of combining cloud computing and mobile platforms towards a new computing/ communications paradigm. In “Mobile Cloud Computing: A Survey, State of Art and Future Directions”, M. R. Rahimi et al. provided a complete survey on the field of MCC on its state of art applications, research challenges, opportunities and future research directions. The typical MCC applications are discussed, such as mobile learning, commerce, healthcare and social networks. The authors further identify research gaps from three critical aspects from enhancing the efficiency of task offloading to improve the business model, and the research challenges and opportunities are made clear within the context of the existing schemes. In the paper “ACloudlet-AssistedMultiplayer Cloud Gaming System” by W. Cai et al., the authors proposed a novel cloudlet-assisted multiplayer cloud gaming system, in which the mobile devices are connected to the cloud server for realtime interactive game videos, while sharing the received video M. Abstract:The limited energy supply, computing, storage and transmission capabilities of mobile devices pose a number of challenges for improving the quality of service (QoS) of various mobile applications, which has stimulated the emergence of many enhanced mobile computing paradigms, such as mobile cloud computing (MCC), fog computing, mobile edge computing (MEC), etc. The mobile devices need to partition mobile applications into related tasks and decide which tasks should be offloaded to remote computing facilities provided by cloud computing, fog nodes etc. It is very important yet tough to decide which tasks to be uploaded and where they are scheduled since this could greatly impact the applications' timeliness and mobile devices' lifetime. In this paper, we model the task scheduling problem at the end-user mobile device as an energy consumption optimization problem, while taking into account task dependency, data transmission and other constraint conditions such as task deadline and cost. We further present several heuristic algorithms to solve it. A series of simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the algorithms and the results show that our proposed algorithms outperform the state-of-the-art algorithms in energy efficiency as well as response time.

Abstract:The rapidly-increasing high data rate wireless networks and the fast-growing smartphone techniques are continually changing our daily behaviors and coloring our life. However, in order to fully experience the high rate broadband multimedia services, prolonging the battery life of user equipment is critical for the mobile users, especially for the smartphone users. In this work, the problem of offloading the cellular data via a collaborative mobile cloud in an energy efficient manner is investigated. The CMC is formed by a group of users interested in downloading the same content from the operator. Through Device-to-Device communications, the users inside CMC are able to cooperate during downloading procedure and offload data from Base Station for other CMC members. When considering wireless power transfer and MIMO wireless channel, an efficient algorithm is presented to address how to optimally schedule the data offloading and radio resources to obtain the energy efficiency as well as fairness among mobile users. Specifically, the proposed framework takes energy saving maximization, Quality of Service (QoS) requirement as well as user fairness into consideration. Performance evaluations demonstrate that significant energy saving gain can be achieved by the proposed data offloading scheme.
