Abstract:Engineering the shape of nanoparticles has emerged as an effective approach for optimizing their physical/chemical properties. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures with their high surface area/volume ratio have opened up exciting opportunities for developing advanced anisotropic materials and facilitating chemical processes that demand high levels of surface interactions. Although the great potential of low-dimensional 2D nanoswimmers has been suggested by theoretical works, very little experimental study has been undertaken thus far. Here we fabricated a low-dimensional magnetic nanomotor based on discotic barium ferrite nanoplates. We demonstrated that the "fuel-to-motion" behavior and the enhanced diffusion of nanoswimmers are not limited to just OD nanospheres or 1D nanorods but are also applicable to 2D nanoplates. In addition, the 2D nanoswimmers showed excellent catalytic performance in removing molecular and particle stains on cloth likely due to their catalytic activity as well as active locomotion that enhanced microconvection of solution. This study validated a new self-powered nanomachine for cleaning application without any requirement of surfactants or external mechanical energy.

Abstract:We synthesize snowman‐shaped microrotors that are composed of TiO 2 and SiO 2 particles fused together and half‐coated with Au. The microrotors could rotate in the presence of fuel and UV light, and the rotation speed is readily modulated by the fuel concentration and the light intensity. Such microrotors are transformed into mechanical micropumps that hydrodynamically, rather than electrokinetically, pump nearby fluids and particles, with a pump power that scales linearly with its rotation speed. The work thereby opens up a new way for the study of microrotors as micropumps.

Abstract:Inspired by natural biological machines, lots of effort has been invested in developing artificially functional micromotors which can convert energy into movement for carrying out tasks in diverse areas. Here, we present a capillary microfluidic system with dual inner injections for one-step generation of composite structured polymer micromotors with two distinct cores of platinum (Pt) nanoparticle-integrated and iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticle-dispersed hydrogels. Because the flow rates of the prepolymerized fluids can be precisely tuned in the microfluidics, the diameters of the micromotors as well as the sizes and numbers of the inner cores can be well tailored to optimize the parameters of the resultant micromotors. When exposed to a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) medium, the Pt-integrated cores of the micromotors could provide propulsion by expelling bubbles produced from the catalytic decomposition of H2O2, while the Fe3O4-dispersed cores could impart magnetic guidance for the micromotors. Benefiting from the close cooperation of these two types of cores, the micromotors were imparted with a strong propulsion and prominent recyclability for the delivery of both microscale and macroscale objects. These results manifest that this kind of composite micromotor has great diversity in various applications.

Abstract:Bubble-propelled micromotors with controlled size and morphologies are developed by a simple and flexible strategy for efficient wastewater treatment. Controllably and spontaneously evolved complex emulsions from microfluidics are used as templates for continuous fabrication of the micromotors in one step. As the flow rate ratio of disperse phase II (dextran aqueous solution) to disperse phase I (ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate mixture) increases, the micromotor can evolve from a double spherical shape to a snowman shape. By fine tuning the fabrication parameters, we can fabricate micromotors loading with MnO 2 nanoparticles on the concave surface, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on the convex surface and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles inside the micromotors simultaneously. The obtained micromotors are propelled by O 2 bubbles generated from MnO 2 -triggered catalytic decomposition of H 2 O 2 , with the highest speed at about 86.4 μm/s. Fe 3 O 4 -induced Fenton reaction can account for the methylene blue degradation. Our study provides an easy and effective strategy for the one-step synthesis of spherical and non-spherical micromotors, which can be potentially used for highly efficient wastewater treatments.

Abstract:Exploring micromotors with outstanding propulsion efficiency is of great importance for aspects ranging from enhancement of performance to realization of applications. Improvements in propulsion efficiency lead to a lower fuel requirementand broadens the potential application areas for higher environment compatibility. In this article, a tubular micromotor with catalytic nanoparticle superlattices is fabricated through a simple epitaxial assembly method. A high surface-to-volume ratio due to the use of catalytic nanoparticles, a carbon outer layer and cooperative propulsion of multitubes enables the micromotor to move in biocompatible environment with a low concentration of fuel. In addition, magnetic nanoparticles are integrated into the micromotor to offer effective control of the direction of movement by using a magnetic field. This work provides a simple and low-cost fabrication method for a micromotor with high performance, which is expected to meet practical demands.

Abstract:We describe catalytic micromotors powered by remarkably low concentrations of chemical fuel, down to the 0.0000001% level. These Janus micromotors rely on an iridium hemispheric layer for the catalytic decomposition of hydrazine in connection to SiO2 spherical particles. The micromotors are self-propelled at a very high speed (of similar to 20 body lengths s(-1)) in a 0.001% hydrazine solution due to osmotic effects. Such a low fuel concentration represents a 10 000-fold decrease in the level required for common catalytic nanomotors. The attractive propulsion performance, efficient catalytic energy-harvesting, environmentally triggered swarming behavior, and magnetic control of the new Janus micromotors hold considerable promise for diverse practical applications.

Abstract:Nano/-micromotors self-assembling into static and dynamic clusters are of considerable promise to study smart, interactive, responsive, and adaptive nano/-micromaterials that can mimic spatio-temporal patterns, swarming, and collective behaviors widely observed in nature. Previously, the dynamic self-assembly of bubble-propelled catalytic micromotors initiated by capillary forces has been reported. This manuscript shows novel self-assembly modes of magnetic/catalytic Ti/FeNi/Pt tubular micromotors. When chemical fuel (hydrogen peroxide) is added it is decomposed on contact with Pt catalyst into oxygen and water. Here, the non-bubbling motion and autonomous assembly of catalytic/magnetic nanomembranes, i.e. without nucleation/generation of oxygen bubbles, are shown. Moreover, magnetic Ti/FeNi/Pt micromotors are spun using an external magnetic field and they form dynamic clusters balanced by attractive magnetic and repulsive hydrodynamic interactions. Micromotors form dynamic clusters, undergo precession and rapidly propagate through the solution.

Abstract:Powerful micro-/nano-motors with high speeds and large driving forces in fluids are of great importance in propelling micro-/nanomachines for various tasks. Here, we achieved highly efficient catalytic locomotion in microtubular engines with hierarchical nanoporous walls. The sophisticated structures provide an enlarged surface area and improved reactant accessibility, which remarkably enhanced their catalytic activity toward H 2 O 2 decomposition, accelerating the microengine’s speed. The fast catalytic locomotion of such hierarchical nanoporous microtubes makes them excellent candidates as efficient micro-machines for biomedical applications.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of nanomotors is highly dependent on their interaction with substrates, for which the motion dynamics of the nanomotors needs to be carefully manipulated via materials design. Herein, we report a facile one-step self-assembly strategy for hundred-gram scale synthesis of shuttlecock-shaped silica nanoparticles as advanced catalytic nanomotors. These asymmetric nanoparticles have a streamline conical morphology with ultra-large opening in one side. The shuttlecock-mimetic morphology endows the nanoparticles with minimized drag force during fluid motion and consequently high diffusibility, while the large open cavity ensures efficient encapsulation of lipase (a model enzyme) to provide propulsive force. These unique features collectively result in superior diffusibility, leading to significantly improved catalytic performance compared with conventional large pore mesoporous silica nanoparticles with a spherical morphology. This research provides a new conceptual design and synthetic strategy to develop high-performance nanomotors.
Engineering Micromotors with Droplet Microfluidics

Abstract:Micromotors have promising potential in applications ranging from environmental remediation to targeted drug delivery and noninvasive microsurgery. However, there are inadequacies in the fabrication of artificial micromotors to improve the design of structure and composition for motion performance and multifunctionality. Here, we present a microfluidic fiber-confined approach to creating droplet-templated micromotors with precisely engineered anisotropies in 3D structures and material compositions. The shape anisotropy comes from controllable deformation in droplet templates, and material anisotropy originates from versatile emulsion templates. Containing Pt and magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), micromotors are endowed with both catalytic propulsion and magnetic guidance, which are capable of performing tasks of precise catching, skillful delivering, and on-demand releasing of cargos. Droplet microfluidics allows us to systematically and independently vary the shape and size of micromotors and the distribution and content of NPs for the study of their influences on motors' mobility and improve the design. Our results are useful for fabricating micromotors with well-controlled morphology and composition that is beneficial to designing sophisticated microrobotic systems for real-world applications.

Abstract:Biocatalytic micro/nanomotors are objects with micron or nanometer sizes that can transfer local chemical energy into mechanical energy through enzyme catalysis, and thus they hold great promise in the fields of biomedicine, sensors, and environmental science. Their combination with metal- organic frameworks endows biocatalytic motors with many characterizations, including facile synthesis, high and controllable porosity, good biocompatibility, and stimuli-responsive multifunctional behaviors. In this perspective, after illustrating the prerequisites of movement at the micro- and nanoscale, we highlight the recent success of biocatalytic MOFtors and how they resolved specific problems associated with applications in healthcare and water treatment. Also, fundamental principles about the design of biocatalytic MOFtors are elaborated, providing a general guideline to further improve their propulsion performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the utilization of nanoparticles to mediate the motion of a polymer single crystal catalytic micromotor. Micromotors have been fabricated by directly self-assembling functional nanoparticles (platinum and iron oxide nanoparticles) onto one or both sides of two-dimensional polymer single crystals. We show that the moving velocity of these micromotors in fluids can be readily tuned by controlling the nanoparticles' surface wettability and catalytic activity. A 3 times velocity increase has been achieved for a hydrophobic micromotor as opposed to the hydrophilic ones. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the catalytic activity of platinum nanoparticles inside the micromotor can be enhanced by their synergetic interactions with iron oxide nanoparticles and an electric field. Both strategies lead to dramatically increased moving velocities, with the highest value reaching ∼200 μm s(-1). By decreasing the nanoparticles' surface wettability and increasing their catalytic activity, a maximum of a ∼10-fold increase in the moving speed of the nanoparticle based micromotor can be achieved. Our results demonstrate the advantages of using nanoparticles in micromotor systems.

Abstract:Enzyme-powered nanomotors have attracted significant attention in materials science and biomedicine for their biocompatibility, versatility, and the use of biofuels in biological environments. Here, we employ a hybrid mesoscale method combining molecular dynamics and multi-particle collision dynamics (MD–MPC) to study the dynamics of nanomotors powered by enzyme reactions. Two cascade enzymes are constructed to be layered on the same surface of a Janus colloid, providing a confined space that greatly enhances reaction efficiency. Simulations indicate that such a configuration significantly improves the utilization of intermediate products and, consequently, increases the self-propulsion of the Janus motor. By presenting the gradient fields of substrates and products, as well as the hydrodynamics surrounding the motor, we explore the underlying mechanism behind the enhanced autonomous velocity. Additionally, we discuss the improvements in environmental safety of the modified motor, which may shed light on the fabrication of biocatalytic nano-machines in experiments.
Chemical/Light Powered Hybrid Micromotors with 'On-the-Fly' Optical Brakes.

Abstract:Hybrid micromotors capable of both chemically powered propulsion and fuel-free light-driven actuation and offering built-in optical brakes for chemical propulsion are described. The new hybrid micromotors are designed by combining photocatalytic TiO2 and catalytic Pt surfaces into a Janus microparticle. The chemical reactions on the different surfaces of the Janus particle hybrid micromotor can be tailored by using chemical or light stimuli that generate counteracting propulsion forces on the catalytic Pt and photocatalytic TiO2 sides. Such modulation of the surface chemistry on a single micromotor leads to switchable propulsion modes and reversal of the direction of motion that reflect the tuning of the local ion concentration and hence the dominant propulsion force. An intermediate Au layer (under the Pt surface) plays an important role in determining the propulsion mechanism and operation of the hybrid motor. The built-in optical braking system allows "on-the-fly" control of the chemical propulsion through a photocatalytic reaction on the TiO2 side to counterbalance the chemical propulsion force generated on the Pt side. The adaptive dual operation of these chemical/light hybrid micromotors, associated with such control of the surface chemistry, holds considerable promise for designing smart nanomachines that autonomously reconfigure their propulsion mode for various on-demand operations.

Abstract:Micro/nanomotors (MNMs) are miniaturized devices capable of performing self-propelled motion and on-demand tasks, which have brought revolutionary renovations in nanomedicine, environmental remediation, biochemical sensing, etc. Numerous methods of either chemical synthesis or physical fabrications have been extensively investigated to prepare MNMs of various shapes and functions. However, MNMs with replaceable engines that can be flexibly assembled and disassembled, resembling that of a macroscopic machine, have not been achieved. Here, for the first time, we report a demonstration of control over the engine replacement of self-propelled nanomotors based on hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNPs) via supramolecular machine-based host-guest assembly and disassembly between azobenzene (Azo) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Nanomotors with different driving mechanisms can be rapidly constructed by selecting corresponding β-CD-modified nanoengines of urease, Pt, or Fe3O4, to assemble with the azobenzene-modified HMSNPs (HMSNPs-Azo). In virtue of photoresponsive cis/trans isomer conversion of azobenzene molecules, engine switching can be accomplished by remote light triggered host-guest assembly or disassembly between HMSNPs-Azo and β-CD-modified engines. Moreover, this method can quickly include multiple engines on the surface of the HMSNPs-Azo to prepare a hybrid MNM with enhanced motion capability. This strategy not only is cost-effective for the rapid and convenient preparation of nanomotors with different propulsion mechanism but also paves a new path to future multiple functionalization of MNMs for on-demand task assignment.

This laccase-integrated Fe-BTC/NiFe(2)O(4)micromotor was capable of self-propulsion with a speed of 120 mu m s(-1)by oxygen bubblesviathe decomposition of H(2)O(2)catalyzed by Mn2O3. Abstract:Artificial nano/micromotors that represent the next-generation automotive microdevices hold considerable promise in various potential applications. However, it is a great challenge to design light-powered micro/nanomotors with effective propulsion that can fulfill diverse tasks. Herein, a multilight-responsive micromotor is fabricated by in-situ precipitation of photothermal Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto different microparticles. The composites exhibit phototactic swarming movement by irradiations at 320-550 nm, which can be reversibly and remotely manipulated by irradiation position, "on/off" switch and light intensity. The micromotor made of Fe3O4@poly(glycidyl methacrylate)/polystyrene core-shell particles (Fe3O4@PGS) presents a propulsion speed as high as 270 μm/s under UV irradiation. By using an array of experimental methods and numerical simulations, thermal convection mechanism is proposed for the propulsion. Namely, under light irradiations, the photogenerated heat on Fe3O4 NPs decreases the density of the irradiated spot, leading to the swarming motion of the composite particles propelled by a "hydrodynamic drag" toward the light spot. Then, Fe3O4@PGS is exploited as a platform for performing "chemistry-on-the-fly" using both the catalytic efficiency of Fe3O4 NPs and an immobilized enzyme (lipase). It is found that the propulsion increases the catalytic efficiency of Fe3O4 NPs for rhodamine B degradation by over 10 times under sunlight. Moreover, it is proved to accelerate the enzymatic reactions of lipase on Fe3O4@PGS in both aqueous and organic systems by more than 50%. Such a multiwavelength phototactic swimmer paves the way to the design of advanced micromotors for various applications, such as drug delivery, microsurgery, and sensing.
