Abstract:The traditional oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) catalysts are mainly noble metal-based materials, but their scarcity and instability impede their practical applications, especially in Zn-air batteries. Hence, identifying a bifunctional catalyst with low-cost and high-stability is very crucial for Zn-air batteries. Herein, we report a simple method to prepare core-shell-structured Co@Co3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated into N-doped carbon polyhedra by carbonization and controlled oxidation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are then applied as a bifunctional catalyst for Zn-air batteries. Using such a configuration, enhanced performances, including a high power density of similar to 64 mW cm(-2), a stable voltage profile over 80 h battery operation with four mechanical recharges, a small discharge/charge overpotential of similar to 0.66 V and a long-life of 100 cycles for 200 h operation at 5 mA cm(-2), have been achieved. These excellent performances can be attributed to abundant graphited carbon and CNTs, high N-doping, plentiful pores, the synergy between the semiconductive Co3O4-coating layer and the conductive Co bulk, and the uniform Co@Co3O4 nanoparticles in this catalyst which effectively improve electrical conductivity/ion transfer and further concertedly promote the catalytic activity towards the ORR/OER. Moreover, the belt-shaped polymer Zn-air battery with this catalyst also shows good electrochemical stability under different deformations.

Abstract:A reasonable design of the pore structure of carbon nanofiber-based electrocatalysts can effectively accelerate the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, we report an electro-spinning method by adding supramolecular coordination polymers to selected polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and cellulose acetate (CA) spinning systems. Benefiting from the difference in the thermal decomposition temperature of each component during the pyrolysis process, CA was applied as a sacrificial template to prepare a high-efficiency ORR/OER bifunctional electro-catalyst (Co-N@PCNFs-0.2) with directional hollow channels and a hierarchical pore structure. This unique multichannel carbon nanofiber morphology and hierarchical pore structure led to abundant active sites while also boosting the electron transfer rates. Notably, applying Co-N@PCNFs-0.2 as an air electrode to Zn-air batteries results in a large specific discharge capacity of 884 W h kgZn(-1) and a maximum power density of 151 mW cm(-2).

Abstract:Metal/nitrogen-doped carbon single-atom catalysts (M−N−C SACs) show excellent catalytic performance with a maximum atom utilization and customizable tunable electronic structure. However, precisely modulating the M−Nx coordination in M−N−C SACs remains a grand challenge. Here, we used a N-rich nucleobase coordination self-assembly strategy to precisely regulate the dispersion of metal atoms by controlling the metal ratio. Meanwhile, the elimination of Zn during pyrolysis produced porous carbon microspheres with a specific surface area of up to 1151 m2 g−1, allowing maximum exposure of Co−N4 sites and facilitating charge transport in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process. Thereby, the monodispersed cobalt sites (Co−N4) in N-rich (18.49 at%) porous carbon microspheres (CoSA/N−PCMS) displayed excellent ORR activity under alkaline conditions. Simultaneously, the Zn−air battery (ZAB) assembled with CoSA/N−PCMS outperformed Pt/C+RuO2-based ZABs in terms of power density and capacity, proving that they have good prospects for practical application.

Herein, we have developed cobalt (Co) single atoms anchored in porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanoflake arrays, synthesized from Co-MOF precursor and followed by removal of the unwanted Co clusters. The well-dispersed Co single atoms are attached to the carbon network through N-Co bonding, where there is extra porosity and active surface area created by the removal of the Co metal clusters. Interestingly, compared with those electrocatalysts containing excess Co nanoparticles, a single Co atom alone demonstrates a lower oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential and much higher oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) saturation current, showing that the Co metal clusters are redundant in driving both OER and ORR Given the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity and mechanical flexibility, the electrocatalyst assembled on carbon cloth is employed as the air cathode in a solid-state Zn-air battery, which presents good cycling stabilities (2500 min, 125 cycles) as well as a high open circuit potential (1.411 V).

Abstract:The precise control of morphology and structure of porous carbon derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial for determining the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. Herein, defect-enriched hollow porous Co–N-doped carbon nanomaterials (Co–N/PCNs) towards ORR were obtained by pyrolyzing a ZIF-8 encapsulated Co ions nanocomposite. We found that the amount of the incorporation of cobalt (II) into ZIF-8 precursors play very important role in the structural evolution of ZIF-8 derivatives during the high temperature pyrolysis. The experiments show that defect-enriched hollow porous Co–N-doped carbon derived from the incorporation of 2 wt% cobalt (II) into ZIF-8 precursors (Co–N/PCNs-2) showed excellent stability and activity towards ORR. The onset potential (Eonset) and the half-wave potential (E1/2) on Co–N/PCNs-2 are 0.99 V and 0.88 V, respectively, outperforming the commercial Pt/C (Eonset = 0.98 V, E1/2 = 0.85 V). Moreover, the Zn-air batteries with Co–N/PCNs-2 as an air electrode displays robust stability and high activity, affording a maximum power density of 135 mW cm−2 in comparison with the Pt/C catalysts (114 mW cm−2). The density functional theory (DFT) verified that the Co-NX active site along with the defects are conducive to the O2 adsorption and thus improve the ORR process compared with the pure Co-NX active site.

Abstract:The novel catalyst (FeCoP2-CNC) is constructed by inserting the bimetallic phosphide into a hybrid carbon substrate. The structures associated with the active sites are optimized by incorporating ultrafine cellulose fibers as a carbon source. The increased graphitic-N and metal-N species in the carbon matrix, with the enlarged specific surface area, improves the performance of catalyzing oxygen reduction reaction. The increased proportion of surface metal hydroxide active sites improves the performance of catalyzing oxygen evolution reaction. As a high performance bifunctional catalyst, the FeCoP2-CNC is applied to a rechargeable zinc–air battery and exhibits excellent performance in the battery. The solid-state zinc–air battery has achieved an excellent power density (76.9 mW cm–2) and can cycle over 45 h. The solid-state zinc–air batteries are integrated into 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 modules to power practical devices. This work provides efficient approaches to enhance the performance of bifunctional catalysts, promoting the application of zinc–air batteries.

Abstract:The development of low-cost and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of critical importance for clean energy devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, a sophisticated nanostructure composed of CoS, Co and MoC nanoparticles incorporated in N and S dual-doped porous carbon nanofibers (CoS/Co/MoC-N, S-PCNFs) as a high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalyst is designed and synthesized via an efficient multi-step strategy. The as-prepared CoS/Co/MoC-N, S-PCNFs exhibit a positive half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.871 V for ORR and a low overpotential of 289 mV at 10 mA/cm2 for OER, outperforming the non-noble metal-based catalysts reported. Furthermore, the assembled Zn-air battery based on CoS/Co/MoC-N, S-PCNFs delivers an excellent power density (169.1 mW/cm2), a large specific capacity (819.3 mA h/g) and robust durability, demonstrating the great potential of the as-developed bifunctional electrocatalyst in practical applications. This work is expected to inspire the design of advanced bifunctional nonprecious metal-based electrocatalysts for energy storage.

Abstract:Porous carbon nitride (PCN) composites are fabricated using a top-down strategy, followed by additions of graphene and CoSx nanoparticles. This subsequently enhances conductivity and catalytic activity of PCN (abbreviated as CoSx@PCN/rGO) and is achieved by one-step sulfuration of PCN/graphene oxides (GO) composite materials. As a result, the as-prepared CoSx@PCN/rGO catalysts display excellent activity and stability toward both oxygen evolution and reduction reactions, surpassing electrocatalytic performance shown by state-of-the-art Pt, RuO2 and other carbon nitrides. Remarkably, the CoSx@PCN/rGO bifunctional activity allows for applications in zinc-air batteries, which show better rechargeability than Pt/C. The enhanced catalytic performance of CoSx@PCN/rGO can primarily be attributed to the highly porous morphology and sufficiently exposed active sites that are favorable for electrocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:Reasonable construction of efficient bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) counts a great deal for the development and application of rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Herein, we prepared nano-sized heterostructural particles of cobalt phosphides (CoP/Co 2 P) confined in N, P-codoped cubic through simple grinding combined with vapor deposition method using the Co formic-acid framework (Co-FF) as the precursor. Benefit from the synergistic effect between the coexistence of abundant active sites including Co sites derived the CoP/Co 2 P nanoparticles, graphitic-N, pyridinic-N species and regulation of heterojunction interface electrons, the CoP/Co 2 P@NPC-800 catalyst exhibited excellent bifunctional catalytic activity toward ORR and OER, slightly better than commercial 20 % Pt/C. The liquid zinc-air battery demonstrates a specific capacity of 720.1 mAh g −1 and outstanding stability exceeds 250 h, comparable to 20 % Pt/C. Moreover, the flexible zinc-air battery can maintain good stability under different angles of bending. This study has a certain theoretical guiding significance for the rational regulation of the phase of cobalt-based phosphide to fabricate bifunctional oxygen catalysts for metal-air battery applications.

Abstract:An efficient, robust and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential to high-performance zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) systems have attracted considerable attention recently. Herein, a novel Co-Nx-enriched electrospun porous carbon nanofibrous bifunctional electrocatalyst (Co-Nx/EPCF) is prepared by electrospinning with cobalt nitrate and SiO2, followed by carbonization and acid etching. The catalyst displays an outstanding electrocatalytic activity of reversible oxygen overpotential (ΔE = Ej = 10 - E1/2 = 0.87 V), as well as a high stability. The first-principal calculation reveals that the Co–N–C structure has better ORR paths than that of Co cluster. Furthermore, based on the electrocatalyst, the assembled flexible ZABs possess a power density of 81 mW cm−2, a capacity of 807 mAh gzn−1, and 111 stability cycles. The study provides a novel strategy to prepare high-performance bifunctional catalysts for wearable power sources.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) function as the key technologies for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) and other energy conversion devices, whereas the proliferation still hinges on bifunctional catalysts to address their slow kinetics. Herein, we purpose a mulberry-like architecture of cobalt-nitrogen doped carbon spheres encapsulating Co particles (Co-MP@NCS) through a template-engaged pyrolysis as ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalysts for ZABs. Co-MP@NCS with abundant active sites possesses advantages such as hierarchical pores and strong coupling effect between the components, optimizing the reaction pathway and accelerating the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate the critical role of coordinated Co and nanoparticles in modulating the electronic and magnetic configurations, establishing novel structure-activity correlations. The bifunctional electrocatalyst manifest an ORR half-wave potential of 0.85 V and an OER overpotential of 233 mV at 10 mA cm-2. The assembled aqueous ZAB display an attractive power density of 181 mW cm-2.

The designed catalysts show comparable performance with commercial catalysts. Meanwhile, rechargeable Zn-air batteries with prepared catalysts demonstrate high peak power density and good cycling stability. The performance promotion originates from the synergy between Co nanoparticles and highly dispersed Fe, porous structures, large specific areas, and distinct three-dimensional carbon networks. Searching for cheap, efficient, and stable oxygen electrocatalysts is vital to promote the practical performance of Zn-air batteries with high theoretic energy density. Herein, a series of Co nanoparticles and highly dispersed Fe loaded on N-doped porous carbon substrates are prepared through a "double-solvent" method with in situ doped metal-organic frameworks as precursors. The optimized catalysts exhibit excellent performance for oxygen reduction and evolution reaction. Furthermore, rechargeable Zn-air batteries with designed catalysts demonstrate higher peak power density and better cycling stability than those with commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 . According to structure characterizations and electrochemical tests, the interaction of Co nanoparticles and highly dispersed Fe contributes to the superior performance for oxygen electrocatalysis. In addition, large specific surface areas, porous structures and interconnected three-dimensional carbon networks also play important roles in improving oxygen electrocatalysis. This work provides inspiration for rational design of advanced oxygen electrocatalysts and paves a way for the practical application of rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:The construction of efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a challenge for rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Bimetallic phosphide (NiCoP) holds considerable promise as a bifunctional catalyst. Here, an efficient NiCoP-based bifunctional electrocatalyst was fabricated using PCN-222-assembled organophosphorus complexes, specifically 1,1-bis(diphenylphosphine)ferrocene (DPPF). These DPPF complexes serve as sources of phosphorus and metals, undergoing in-situ conversion into Fe-doped NiCoP nanoparticles (Fe-NiCoP) while simultaneously constructing a heteroatom-doped carbon matrix (NPC). The final catalytic structure, composed of ultra-fine Fe-NiCoP nanoparticles confined within the NPC, exhibits superior bifunctional electrocatalytic activity (with a ΔE gap of 0.69 V between OER and ORR) and exceptional stability. In-situ Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal that the high performance arises from the synergistic effect of Fe-NiCoP and NPC, where Fe-NiCoP triggers the catalytic activity of the attached NPC. The calculated active site is identified as the C atom near the N atom on the NPC, lowering the potential barrier for O-containing intermediate compounds and enhancing the catalytic performance. In addition, NPC protects the Fe-NiCoP core from oxidation during battery cycles, allowing ZABs equipped with this catalyst to achieve high power density and long-term cycling performance.

Abstract:The rational design and fabrication of high-performance and durable bifunctional non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are still of great challenge for the practical application of rechargeable zinc−air (Zn−air) batteries. Herein, we report a simple yet robust route to synthesize cobalt nanoparticles rooted in the hierarchically hollow nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks (Co@HNCs). This strategy employs the pyrolysis of nanostructured hollow Co-based metal−organic framework (ZIF-67) precursors produced by selective linker cleaving with pyrazino(2,3-f)(1,10)phenanthroline-2,3-dicarboxylic acid molecules (H2PPDA). The designed hierarchically architecture is favorable for the accessibility of the active sites in the catalyst, which affords the enhanced bifunctional performance for ORR and OER. Moreover, when used as cathode in liquid and all-solid-state Zn−air batteries, the resultant Co@HNCs delivers high efficiency and outstanding durability, even outperforming the benchmark Pt/C+RuO2. This work provides a feasible design avenue to achieve advanced dual-phasic oxygen electrocatalyst and promotes the development of rechargeable Zn−air batteries.

One-step Construction of Multi-Doped Nanoporous Carbon-Based Nanoarchitecture As an Advanced Bifunctional Oxygen Electrode for Zn-Air Batteries

Abstract:Fabrication of multi-doped catalysts generally involves complex and energy-intensive processes including the preparation of special precursor, solvent evaporation, and post separation or treatment. Herein, we have developed an eco-friendly one-step process to effectively regulate the electronic structure of products by combining the concepts of alloy, heteroatoms doping, phase controlling and heterostructures. The obtained CoFe and Cog nanoparticles encapsulated in multi-doped nanoporous carbon (NPSC-Co2Fe1) exhibits a small potential gap between E-j=10 and E-1/2 of 0.75 V for bifunctional electrocatalytic O-2 redox reactions. It is revealed that defect-rich multi-doped carbon-based nanoarchitecture and electronic redistribution provide more donor-acceptor active sites with reduced energy barrier. Notably, ZABs using NPSC-Co2Fe1 as air electrodes exhibit outstanding charge-discharge performances and cycling stability superior to those of ZABs with Pt/C-IrO2. The flexible all-solid-state ZABs with NPSC-Co2Fe1 operate stably even under bending state. Moreover, these batteries are implemented to power mini-fans and LED panels.

Abstract:Highly efficient and low-cost multifunctional electrocatalysts play a crucial role in energy storage and conversion systems. Herein, a new strategy is developed based on a structured precursor to design and fabricate a hierarchical porous nitrogen doped graphene coupled with densely distributed CoO/Co3O4 heterostructure that exhibits outstanding multifunctional activities. With rational hybridization of graphene and bimetallic nanoparticles, the as-obtained NGPC@CoO(x )integrated densely distributed CoO/Co3O4 active nanoparticles to 3D interconnected hierarchical N-doped graphene mesh, which gives rise to a multifaceted capability for electron/ion transfer and redox catalyzing. The NGPC@CoOx possesses excellent durability with a superior E-1/2 of 0.86 V for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and a relatively low potential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of 1.61 V, and-0.162 V at 10 mA cm(-2), respectively. Additionally, the superior cycling durability and high power density of NGPC@CoOx-based zinc-air batteries (184.4 mW cm(-2)) further confirm the potential application of prototype devices. This work introduces a new perspective on developing efficient multifunctional electrocatalysts with a well-designed 3D structure anchored with densely distributed nanoparticles towards energy storage and conversion technologies.

Abstract:Designing rational transition-metal/carbon composites with highly dispersed and firmly anchored nanoparticles (NPs) to prevent agglomeration and shedding is crucial for realizing excellent electrocatalytic performances. Herein, a biomass pore-confined strategy based on mesoporous willow catkin is explored to obtain uniformly dispersed CoFe NPs in N-doped carbon nanotubes and hollow carbon fibers (CoFe@N-CNTs/HCFs). The resultant catalyst exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance, which affords a half-wave potential of 0.86 V (vs. RHE) with a limited current density of 6.0 mA·cm −2 for oxygen reduction reaction and potential of 1.67 V (vs. RHE) at 10 mA·cm −2 in 0.1 M KOH for oxygen evolution reaction. When applied to rechargeable zinc–air batteries, a maximum power density of 340 mW·cm −2 and long-term cyclic durability over 800 h are achieved. Such superior bifunctional electrocatalytic activities are ascribed to the biocarbon matrix with abundant mesopores and unobstructed hollow channels, CoFe NPs with high dispersion and controllable nanoscale and the hybrid composite with optimized electronic structure. This work presents an effective approach for constraining the size and dispersion of NPs in a low-cost biocarbon substrate, offering valuable insights for designing advanced oxygen electrocatalysts.
