Abstract:We present the implementation of a solution scheme for fluid-structure interaction problems via the finite element software library <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://deal.II" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. The solution scheme is an immersed finite element method in which two independent discretizations are used for the fluid and immersed deformable body. In this type of formulation the support of the equations of motion of the fluid is extended to cover the union of the solid and fluid domains. The equations of motion over the extended solution domain govern the flow of a fluid under the action of a body force field. This body force field informs the fluid of the presence of the immersed solid. The velocity field of the immersed solid is the restriction over the immersed domain of the velocity field in the extended equations of motion. The focus of this paper is to show how the determination of the motion of the immersed domain is carried out in practice. We show that our implementation is general, that is, it is not dependent on a specific choice of the finite element spaces over the immersed solid and the extended fluid domains. We present some preliminary results concerning the accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper presents a weak Galerkin (WG) finite element solver for Darcy flow and its implementation on the deal.II platform. The solver works for quadrilateral and hexahedral meshes in a unified way. It approximates pressure by Q-type degree k(>= 0) polynomials separately defined in element interiors and on edges/faces. Numerical velocity is obtained in the unmapped Raviart-Thomas space RT[k] via postprocessing based on the novel concepts of discrete weak gradients. The solver is locally mass-conservative and produces continuous normal fluxes. The implementation in deal.II allows polynomial degrees up to 5. Numerical experiments show that our new WG solver performs better than the classical mixed finite element methods.

Abstract:This paper presents a finite element solver for linear poroelasticity problems on quadrilateral meshes based on the displacement-pressure two-field model. This new solver combines the Bernardi-Raugel element for linear elasticity and a weak Galerkin element for Darcy flow through the implicit Euler temporal discretization. The solver does not use any penalty factor and has less degrees of freedom compared to other existing methods. The solver is free of nonphysical pressure oscillations, as demonstrated by numerical experiments on two widely tested benchmarks. Extension to other types of meshes in 2-dim and 3-dim is also discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel 2-field finite element solver for linear poroelasticity on convex quadrilateral meshes. The Darcy flow is discretized for fluid pressure by a lowest-order weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method, which establishes the discrete weak gradient and numerical velocity in the lowest-order Arbogast–Correa space. The linear elasticity is discretized for solid displacement by the enriched Lagrangian finite elements with a special treatment for the volumetric dilation. These two types of finite elements are coupled through the implicit Euler temporal discretization to solve poroelasticity problems. A rigorous error analysis is presented along with numerical tests to demonstrate the accuracy and locking-free property of this new solver.

Abstract:The finite particle method (FPM) is new numerical method and suitable for analyzing structures and mechanisms undergoing large rigid body motion,deformation or their coupled problems.FPM has been successfully applied to infinitesimal mechanisms,deployable structures,contact,progressive collapse,buckling,cable-strut structures,2D solid,membrane structures,multi-scale analysis and refinement analysis.In order to form a complete FPM research scheme involving 2D and 3D solids and elastic-plasticity problems,a constant strain 3D tetrahedron solid element was proposed in this study,and the formulations of internal forces were derived.Additionally,an elastic-plasticity analysis was also conducted.Several numerical examples with behavior of static,dynamic,nonlinear material properties were presented to demonstrate the performance and applicability of the proposed approach.Compared with the nonlinear finite element method (NFEM) and experiments,the results of numerical examples solved by self-designed program show that the present method is of high level of reliability and accuracy.

Abstract:This paper develops novel finite element solvers for linear poroelasticity problems on quadrilateral meshes. These solvers are based on the primal formulations of linear elasticity and Darcy flow. Specifically, the fluid pressure and solid displacement are approximated by scalar- or vector-valued polynomials of degree k≥0 separately in element interiors and on edges. The discrete weak gradients of these shape functions are established in the broken (vector- or matrix-version) Arbogast-Correa spaces for approximations of the classical gradients in the variational forms. These weak Galerkin spatial discretizations are combined with the implicit Euler or Crank–Nicolson temporal discretizations to develop locking-free numerical solvers that have optimal order (k+1) convergence rates in pressure, velocity, displacement, stress, and dilation. Rigorous analysis is presented and illustrated by numerical experiments on popular test cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a multiphysics finite element method for a nonlinear poroelasticity model. To better describe the processes of deformation and diffusion, we firstly reformulate the nonlinear fluid-solid coupling problem into a fluid-fluid coupling problem by a multiphysics approach. Then we design a fully discrete time-stepping scheme to use multiphysics finite element method with $P_2-P_1-P_1$ element pairs for the space variables and backward Euler method for the time variable, and we adopt the Newton iterative method to deal with the nonlinear term. Also, we derive the discrete energy laws and the optimal convergence order error estimates without any assumption on the nonlinear stress-strain relation. Finally, we show some numerical examples to verify the rationality of theoretical analysis and there is no "locking phenomenon".

Abstract:We propose a novel time stepping method for linear poroelasticity by extending a recent iterative decoupling approach to the second-order case. This results in a two-step scheme with an inner iteration and a relaxation step. We prove second-order convergence for a prescribed number of inner iteration steps, only depending on the coupling strength of the elastic and the flow equation. The efficiency of the scheme is illustrated by a number of numerical experiments, including a simulation of three-dimensional brain tissue.

Abstract:We present a theoretical and computational model for the behavior of a porous solid undergoing two interdependent processes, the finite deformation of a solid and species migration through the solid, which are distinct in bulk and on surface. Nonlinear theories allow us to systematically study porous solids in a wide range of applications, such as drug delivery, biomaterial design, fundamental study of biomechanics and mechanobiology, and the design of sensors and actuators. As we aim to understand the physical phenomena at a smaller length scale towards comprehending the fundamental biological processes and the miniaturization of devices, the surface effect becomes more pertinent. Although existing methodologies provide the necessary tools to study coupled bulk effects for deformation and diffusion; however, very little is known about fully coupled bulk and surface poroelasticity at finite strain. Here we develop a thermodynamically consistent formulation for multiphysics processes of surface and bulk poroelasticity, specialized for soft hydrated solids, along with a corresponding finite element implementation. Our multiphysical approach captures the interplay between competing processes of finite deformation and species diffusion through the bulk and surface, and provides invaluable insight when surface effects are important.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a new finite element discretization for the two-field formulation of poroelasticity which uses the elastic displacement and the pore pressure as primary variables. The main goal is to develop a numerical method with small problem sizes which still achieve key features such as parameter-robustness, local mass conservation, and robust preconditionor construction. For this we combine a nonconforming finite element and the interior over-stabilized enriched Galerkin methods with a suitable stabilization term. Robust a priori error estimates and parameter-robust preconditioner construction are proved, and numerical results illustrate our theoretical findings.

Abstract:We propose, analyze and implement a virtual element discretization for an interfacial poroelasticity-elasticity consolidation problem. The formulation of the time-dependent poroelasticity equations uses displacement, fluid pressure, and total pressure, and the elasticity equations are written in the displacement-pressure formulation. The construction of the virtual element scheme does not require Lagrange multipliers to impose the transmission conditions (continuity of displacement and total traction, and no-flux for the fluid) on the interface. We show the stability and convergence of the virtual element method for different polynomial degrees, and the error bounds are robust with respect to delicate model parameters (such as Lame constants, permeability, and storativity coefficient). Finally, we provide numerical examples that illustrate the properties of the scheme.

Abstract:Three dimensional numerical modeling has been a viable tool for understanding wave propagation in real media. The poroelastic media can better describe the phenomena of hydrocarbon reservoirs than acoustic and elastic media. However, the numerical modeling in 3D poroelastic media demands significantly more computational capacity, including both computational time and memory. In this paper, we present a 3D poroelastic staggered-grid finite difference (SFD) scheme. During the procedure, parallel computing is implemented to reduce the computational time. Parallelization is based on domain decomposition, and communication between processors is performed using message passing interface (MPI). Parallel analysis shows that the parallelized SFD scheme significantly improves the simulation efficiency and 3D decomposition in domain is the most efficient. We also analyze the numerical dispersion and stability condition of the 3D poroelastic SFD method. Numerical results show that the 3D numerical simulation can provide a real description of wave propagation.

Abstract:A stabilized finite element formulation is proposed to the study of the finite deformation of a porous solid saturated with a compressible fluid. Unlike previous finite element schemes, the compressibility of the fluid constituent is entirely considered, and particularly, the a porosity-dependent permeability is utilized in the present formulation. As a special case, the formulation for the saturating fluid being an ideal gas is also derived. The displacement of solid skeleton and pore pressure are treated as primary variables to express the resulting coupled nonlinear system of equations. Equal-order (C^{0}) elements are employed to approximate displacement and pressure fields. The stability problem caused by the equal-order interpolation is overcome by using the method of polynomial pressure projections. Two examples are provided to demonstrate the effect of fluid compressibility, as well as the porosity-dependent permeability, on the responses of the material.

Abstract:A virtual element discretisation for the numerical approximation of the three-field formulation of linear poroelasticity introduced in R. Oyarzúa and R. Ruiz-Baier, (<i>SIAM J. Numer. Anal.</i> <b>54</b> 2951–2973, <a href="/article/10.1007/s10444-020-09826-7#ref-CR45">2016</a>) is proposed. The treatment is extended to include also the transient case. Appropriate poroelasticity projector operators are introduced and they assist in deriving energy bounds for the time-dependent discrete problem. Under standard assumptions on the computational domain, optimal a priori error estimates are established. These estimates are valid independently of the values assumed by the dilation modulus and the specific storage coefficient, implying that the formulation is locking-free. Furthermore, the accuracy of the method is verified numerically through a set of computational tests.

Abstract:In this work, restricted additive Schwarz (RAS) and optimized restricted additive Schwarz (ORAS) preconditioners from the Trilinos package FROSch (Fast and Robust Overlapping Schwarz) are employed to solve model problems implemented using <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://deal.II" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> (differential equations analysis library). Therefore, a Tpetra-based interface for coupling <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://deal.II" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and FROSch is implemented. While RAS preconditioners have been available before, ORAS preconditioners have been newly added to FROSch. The <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://FROSch-deal.II" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> interface works for both Lagrange-based and Nédélec finite elements. Here, as model problems, nonstationary, nonlinear, variational-monolithic fluid-structure interaction and the indefinite time-harmonic Maxwell's equations are considered. Several numerical experiments in two and three spatial dimensions confirm the performance of the preconditioners as well as the <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://FROSch-deal.II" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> interface. In conclusion, the overall software interface is straightforward and easy to use while giving satisfactory solver performances for challenging PDE systems.

Abstract:In this study, a simple PFEM approach for analyzing large deformation problems in geotechnical practice is implemented in the commercial FEM package Abaqus. The main feature of the proposed Abaqus-PFEM approach lies in its capability to absorb the advantages of the functionality available in Abaqus and integrate them into PFEM with a single Python script, which leads to a considerable reduction in coding work. By utilizing the built-in functions in Abaqus to fulfil the standard incremental FEM analysis, as well as the powerful mesh-to-mesh solution mapping technique, the proposed Abaqus-PFEM approach allows for the large deformation analysis automatically running with a single Python script and requires no intervention from the user. The accuracy of the proposed Abaqus-PFEM approach is firstly validated through a simple elastic cantilever beam bending problem. Then, the performance and robustness of the proposed Abaqus-PFEM approach are further examined by three illustrative numerical examples: penetration of rigid footing, penetration of T-bar and pipeline–soil interaction problem. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed Abaqus-PFEM approach as a powerful and easily extensible numerical tool is capable of handling large deformation and soil–structure interaction problems in geotechnical engineering, and consequently, it offers an alternative way to tackle such problems.

Efficient and reliable divergence-conforming methods for an elasticity-poroelasticity interface problem

Abstract:We present a finite element discretisation to model the interaction between a poroelastic structure and an elastic medium. The consolidation problem considers fully coupled deformations across an interface, ensuring continuity of displacement and total traction, as well as no-flux for the fluid phase. Our formulation of the poroelasticity equations incorporates displacement, fluid pressure, and total pressure, while the elasticity equations adopt a displacement-pressure formulation. Notably, the transmission conditions at the interface are enforced without the need for Lagrange multipliers. We demonstrate the stability and convergence of the divergence-conforming finite element method across various polynomial degrees. The a priori error bounds remain robust, even when considering large variations in intricate model parameters such as Lamé constants, permeability, and storativity coefficient. To enhance computational efficiency and reliability, we develop residual-based a posteriori error estimators that are independent of the aforementioned coefficients. Additionally, we devise parameter-robust and optimal block diagonal preconditioners. Through numerical examples, including adaptive scenarios, we illustrate the scheme's properties such as convergence and parameter robustness.

Abstract:Soft biological tissues demonstrate strong time-dependent and strain-rate mechanical behavior, arising from their intrinsic visco-elasticity and fluid-solid interactions (especially at sufficiently large time scales). The time-dependent mechanical properties of soft tissues influence their physiological functions and are linked to several pathological processes. Poro-elastic modeling represents a promising approach because it allows the integration of multiscale/multiphysics data to probe biologically relevant phenomena at a smaller scale and embeds the relevant mechanisms at the larger scale. The implementation of multi-phasic flow poro-elastic models however is a complex undertaking, requiring extensive knowledge. The open-source software FEniCSx Project provides a novel tool for the automated solution of partial differential equations by the finite element method. This paper aims to provide the required tools to model the mixed formulation of poro-elasticity, from the theory to the implementation, within FEniCSx. Several benchmark cases are studied. A column under confined compression conditions is compared to the Terzaghi analytical solution, using the L2-norm. An implementation of poro-hyper-elasticity is proposed. A bi-compartment column is compared to previously published results (Cast3m implementation). For all cases, accurate results are obtained in terms of a normalized Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). Furthermore, the FEniCSx computation is found three times faster than the legacy FEniCS one. The benefits of parallel computation are also highlighted.
