Abstract:Ruthenium (Ru), benefitting from the efficient water dissociation ability, is considered a good candidate for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); however, the strong binding of H intermediate over Ru sites leads to a limited desorption behavior and thus an unsatisfactory HER activity. Here, we proposed a strategy to fabricate a well-defined hetero-interface via anchoring Ru nanoparticles on Co4N nanorods grown on nickel foam (Ru/Co4N/NF). The as-prepared Ru/Co4N/NF catalyst is demonstrated to effectively catalyze water splitting into hydrogen in an alkaline electrolyte, with an overpotential of 145 mV to reach 100 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 25 mV dec-1, far surpassing bare Ru/NF and Co4N/NF. Experimental observations combined with computational simulations reveal that the charge migration from Ru to Co4N contributes to the formation of electron-deficient Ru sites and renders the d-band center away from Fermi level, which is conducive to hydrogen desorption. Meanwhile, the electron coupling effect between Ru and Co4N reduces the H2O adsorption energy and allows more electrons to participate in H2O molecule activation.

Abstract:The surface properties of catalysts determine the intrinsic activity and adaptability. Ruthenium is regarded as a potential candidate to substitute platinum for water electrolysis due to the low cost and analogous electronic structures while it suffers from severe dissolution and stability problems. Herein, the modification of Ru/C with atomically dispersed cobalt atoms is achieved via a simple thermal doping method. The newly formed amorphous shell with Ru-Co sites on the Ru/C catalyst improved the hydrogen evolution reaction activity and stability significantly. Impressively, the obtained Co1Ru@Ru/CNx catalyst exhibited an overpotential as low as 30 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in an alkaline medium, which is among the best HER catalysts reported so far. The oxygen oxophile Co prevents the fast oxidation and dissolution of Ru species, ensuring outstanding long-term durability up to 70 h. Theoretical calculations reveal that the Ru-Co coordination acts as a more active site for water dissociation than the Ru-Ru. Meanwhile, the "Ru-Co shell/Ru core" structures show high adaptability for the reaction conditions. This simple doping strategy offers prospects for scalable preparation of highly active electrocatalysts.
Regulating the Electronic Configuration of Ruthenium Nanoparticles Via Coupling Cobalt Phosphide for Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Media

Abstract:The strong adsorption of intermediates such as OH* and H* species on the surface of ruthenium (Ru) significantly impedes its electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. Here, we propose the introduction of cobalt phosphide (CoP) to efficiently regulate the electronic configuration of Ru. The resultant CoP nanowire array decorated with ultrafine Ru nanoparticles on a conductive carbon cloth substrate (denoted as Ru-CoP/CC) displays comparable catalytic performance to the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst for HER in 1 M KOH solution, requiring an extremely low overpotential of only similar to 21 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), exhibiting a Tafel slope as low as similar to 49 mV/dec, and maintaining excellent stability over 24 h of electrolysis. Density functional theory calculations on the simulated charge distribution reveal that the regulation of the surface electronic structure of Ru by CoP decreases the adsorption energy of OH* and H* intermediates on the surface of Ru and ultimately contributes to the outstanding electrocatalytic activity of the RueCoP/CC electrode for HER. Abstract:For heterogeneous catalysts, the active sites exposed on the surface have been investigated intensively, yet the effect of the subsurface-underlying atoms is much less scrutinized. Here, a surface-engineering strategy to dope Ru into the subsurface/surface of Co matrix is reported, which alters the electronic structure and lattice strain of the catalyst surface. Using hydrogen evolution (HER) as a model reaction, it is found that the subsurface doping Ru can optimize the hydrogen adsorption energy and improve the catalytic performance, with overpotentials of 28 and 45 mV at 10 mA cm<sup>-2</sup> in alkaline and acidic media, respectively, and in particular, 28 mV in neutral electrolyte. The experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that the subsurface/surface doping Ru improves the HER efficiency in terms of both thermodynamics and kinetics. The approach here stands as an effective strategy for catalyst design via subsurface engineering at the atomic level.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) is used to predict the behavior of ruthenium-doped nickel cobalt alloy in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). According to DFT calculation, a synergistic effect at the Ru-Ni/Co interface is generated to accelerate water dissociation and optimize the adsorption-desorption energetics toward the H intermediate. However, excessive Ru introduction will lead to over-strong hydrogen adsorption on the catalyst surface, thus limiting H 2 release. As a proof of concept, we design a series of NiCoRu x /SP, among which the optimized NiCoRu 0.2 /SP electrocatalyst achieves an overpotential of 59 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , while excessive Ru incorporation (NiCoRu 0.3 /SP) diminishes the HER activity. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and other characterizations further confirm that the interface-induced electron transfer from atomic Ru to its surrounding Ni/Co, and the activity degradation caused by excessive Ru incorporation is attributed to the generation of Ru cluster that sacrifices the interface between Ru atom and Ni/Co.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting in alkaline media plays an important role in mass production of hydrogen. Ruthenium (Ru), as the cheapest member of platinum-group metals, has attracted much attention, and the incorporation of trace amount of Ru with cobalt phosphide could significantly improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity. In this work, ruthenium-incorporated cobalt phosphide nanocubes are synthesized via a reaction between Co-Co Prussian blue analog (Co-PBA) and ruthenium chloride (RuCl 3 ) followed by the phosphidation. The sample with a Ru content of similar to 2.04 wt.% exhibits the best HER catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 51 and 155 mV, to achieve the current densities of -10 and -100 mA cm(-2) , respectively, and the Tafel slope of 53.8 mV dec(-1), which is comparable to the commercial Pt/C. This study provides a new perspective to the design and construction of high performance electrocatalysts for HER and other catalytic applications in a relatively low price.
P‐Doping Modulated RuIr Nanoparticles Anchored on Co/N/C Catalysts with Improved Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Activity and Stability

Abstract:RuIr/Co(SA)NC‐P catalyst with RuIr alloy nanoparticles and P‐doping co‐existing on the Co/N/C catalyst, is presented as an efficient alkaline HER electrocatalyst. The CoNx sites promote the dissociation of adsorbed water molecules, and the generated Had is rapidly transferred to the RuIr alloy and subsequently releases H2 via the Tafel process. Meanwhile, the weakened Ru‐OH binding energy prevents the Ru sites from being poisoned by OHad. Additionally, P‐doping mitigates the metal dissolution/agglomeration of RuIr nanoparticles, enhancing their stability performance. Achieving efficient and stable hydrogen evolution reactions in alkaline conditions is crucial for hydrogen production. In this study, a RuIr/Co(SA)NC‐P catalyst featuring RuIr alloys alongside P‐doping and CoNx sites is developed. RuIr alloying optimizes the electronic structure between Ru and Ir, promoting electron transfer from Ru to Ir. P‐doping further modulates the electronic properties of RuIr alloys, optimizing hydrogen binding energy and weakening Ru─OH binding energy, facilitating rapid H2 generation and OHad transfer. Meanwhile, CoNx promotes water dissociation, providing a fast proton delivery path for RuIr alloys. The catalyst exhibits enhanced HER activity with a low overpotential of 20 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 20.4 mV dec−1, and a turnover frequency of 19.5 H2 s−1 at 150 mV overpotential. Moreover, catalyst stability is improved 8 times by mitigating RuIr alloy dissolution/agglomeration via P‐doping. This work introduces a promising approach for developing efficient and stable HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Ruthenium-based electrocatalysts exhibit promising potential as alternatives to platinum for catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. However, Ru catalysts require further optimization for their hydrogen binding ability and face challenges with sluggish kinetics of water dissociation. Here, we reported a novel dual-site synergistic catalyst, Ru 1 -Mo 2 C, via reversible hydrogen-spillover mode to achieve high activity and stability towards HER simultaneously. The electronic metal-support interaction significantly modulated the charge redistribution of Ru 1 -Mo 2 C, resulting in optimized d-band center and binding strength of H*. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that water dissociation is proceeded on Mo 2 C and the generated hydrogen atoms are subsequently transferred to adjacent Ru single atom sites for H 2 formation and release, enabling the reaction to adopt a reversible hydrogen spillover mechanism. As a consequence, the Ru 1 -Mo 2 C exhibited an excellent HER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 10.8 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and mass activity of 8.67 A mg PGM -1 (@100 mV), which is 16.7 times that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. The alkaline exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) with Ru 1 -Mo 2 C as cathodic catalyst achieves 1.0 A cm −2 at 1.83 V and remains stable at 500 mA cm −2 for over 200 hours.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective electrocatalysts with high activity and stability especially at high current density is of great significance for the large-scale commercial application of electrochemical water splitting to hydrogen production but still remains challenging. Herein, we report an effective confinement pyrolysis strategy to fabricate embedded ruthenium–cobalt nanoclusters supported on N-doped porous two-dimensional carbon nanosheets (RuCo@CN). Markedly, the embedded structure can effectively prevent the migration, agglomeration, and leaching of nanoparticles, thus endowing the RuCo@CN catalyst with high stability. To be exact, high stability with up to 650 h can be achieved at high current density (− 500 and − 1000 mA·cm −2 ). Besides, the RuCo@CN catalysts also exhibit highly reactive with low overpotentials of only 11 mV at − 10 mA·cm −2 . Density functional theory calculations reveal that the introduction of cobalt reduces the decomposition barrier of H 2 O for RuCo@CN alloy, thus promoting hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:Since water dissociation and H desorption kinetics essentially determine the performance of the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), rationally regulating surface adsorption behavior to achieve a superior catalytic surface is always challenging for catalysts. Herein, N-doped Pt-Ru single atom alloy electrocatalysts were constructed by dispersing diluted Pt single atoms onto Ru nanoparticles by thermal annealing in an ammonium atmosphere. The prepared (Ru-N)@Pt can substantially boost the alkaline HER catalysis of Ru nanoparticles and deliver an impressive overpotential of only 15 mV at 10 mA cm(-2). X-ray-absorption fine structure characterization confirms that the doped N species have bonding interaction with both Ru and Pt sites. Theoretical calculations reveal that N incorporation helps strengthen the interfacial interaction between H2O and Ru sites by precise orbital engineering, while the Pt sites facilitate the H-2 desorption kinetics. This work not only provides an effective strategy to construct single atom alloy electrocatalysts for a high-performance alkaline HER, but also sheds light on the understanding of the reaction mechanism at the atomic level.

Abstract:Hydrogen is the most promising renewable energy source to replace traditional fossil fuels for its ultrahigh energy density, abundance and environmental friendliness. Generating hydrogen by water splitting with highly efficient electrocatalysts is a feasible route to meet current and future energy demand. Herein, the effects of Ru doping and phosphorization treatment on Co3O4 nanoarrays for water splitting are systemically investigated. The results show that a small amount of phosphorus can accelerate hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the trace of Ru dopant can significantly enhance the catalytic activities for HER and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Ru-doped cobalt phosphorous oxide/nickel foam (CoRuPO/NF) nanoarrays exhibit highly efficient catalytic performance with an overpotential of 26 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for HER and 342 mV at 50 mA cm-2 for OER in 1 M KOH solution, indicating superior water splitting performance. Furthermore, the CoRuPO/NF also exhibits eminent and durable activities for alkaline seawater electrolysis. This work significantly advances the development of seawater splitting for hydrogen generation.

Abstract:Herein, a strong metal‐support interaction (SMSI) approach for modifying the hydrogen evolution performance through constructing ultrafine Ru nanoparticles anchored on CoP nanosheets is demonstrated. The SMSI dramatically balances the strong adsorption capacity of Ru and weak adsorption behavior of CoP, thus resulting in moderate hydrogen adsorption energy. Therefore, the optimized electrocatalyst exhibits prominent hydrogen evolution activity in an alkaline medium. The ingenious modification of the hydrogen adsorption state of ruthenium (Ru) for achieving high‐efficiency electrocatalytic performance is of vital importance for water electrolysis technology. Herein, a novel heterostructured catalyst composed of highly dispersed ultrafine Ru nanoparticles immobilized on CoP nanosheet (denoted as Ru/CoP hereafter) is developed through a feasible "impregnation‐phosphorization" strategy. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) simulations collectively indicate that the strong metal‐support interaction (SMSI) effect between Ru nanoparticles and CoP nanosheet substrate can dramatically tailor the electronic configurations of active centers, thus accelerating the charge transfer rate and regulating the hydrogen binding energy. Consequently, the Ru/CoP electrocatalyst with optimal Ru loading content demonstrates prominent HER performance in alkaline solution with a low overpotential of 36 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 73.0 mV dec−1, which can almost compete with that of commercial Pt/C. This work provides a new inspiration for the elaborate modification of intermediate adsorption capacity and enhancement of electrocatalytic performance for high‐efficiency electrocatalysts in energy conversion fields.

Abstract:Ruthenium (Ru) is considered as a promising element for constructing alkaline hydrogen evolution (HER) catalysts due to its rapid water dissociation kinetics and low-cost advantages than Pt. Alloying can optimize the electrochemical performance of metals and reduce the usage of the noble metal. Herin, RuCo alloy nanoparticles were grown in-situ on N-doped carbon nanofibers (RuCo/NCNF) by electrospinning and graphitization. Under thermodynamic driving force, the Ru and Co elements formed RuCo alloys. It is worth noting that the Ru not only improved the catalytic performance, but also reduced the nanoparticle size and exposing more active sites. Moreover, N-doped carbon nanofiber was not only used to load RuCo alloy nanoparticle, but also as a good substrate for the HER reaction. Therefore, the RuCo/NCNF had fabulous catalytic activity in alkaline media. Furthermore, the in-situ growth also endowed the RuCo/NCNF with excellent stability, HER performance was not significantly reduced even after 40 h stability test. And when the Ru:Co = 1:8, RuCo/NCNF had the excellent HER catalytic performance. Only 41 mV was required to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2, with Tafel Slope as low as 64.8 mV dec-1.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Modulating Electronic Structure of PtCo‐Ptrich Nanowires with Ru atoms for Boosted Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Abstract:Ru engineered 1D Pt‐rich‐skinned trimetallic Ru‐PtrichCo nanowires are designed and fabricated for highly efficient and low‐cost alkaline hydrogen evolution due to their modulated electronic structure and strong water adsorption/dissociation capability. Rational design and development of highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts is of great significance for the development of green water electrolysis hydrogen production technology. Ru‐engineered 1D PtCo‐Ptrich nanowires (Ru‐PtrichCo NWs) are fabricated by a facile electrodeposition method. The rich Pt surface on 1D Pt3Co contributes to the fully exposed active sites and enhanced intrinsic catalytic activity (co‐engineered by Ru and Co atoms) for HER. The incorporation of Ru atoms can not only accelerate the water dissociation in alkaline condition to provide sufficient H* but also modulate the electronic structure of Pt to achieve optimized H* adsorption energy. As a result, Ru‐PtrichCo NWs have exhibited ultralow HER overpotentials (η) of 8 and 112 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 in 1 m KOH, respectively, which far exceed those of commercial Pt/C catalyst (η10 = 29 mV, η100 = 206 mV). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that the incorporated Ru atoms possess strong water adsorption capacity (−0.52 vs −0.12 eV for Pt), facilitating water dissociation. The Pt atoms in the outermost Pt‐rich skin of Ru‐PtrichCo NWs achieve optimized H* adsorption free energy (ΔGH*) of −0.08 eV, boosting hydrogen generation.

Abstract:Currently, the most efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water dissociation is Pt-based catalyst. Unfortunately, the high cost and less than perfect efficiency hinder wide-range industrial/technological applications. Here, by controlling the treatment temperature of tris (2,2-bipyridine) ruthenium dichloride hexahydrate, synthesis of compounds with novel ruthenium single/dual atoms (Ru S/DAs) mixed with Ru nanoclusters (Ru S/DAs + Ru NCs) and supported by carbon dots is demonstrated. These compounds are shown to be highly efficient and competitive catalysts for hydrogen evolution. Ru S/DAs + Ru NCs exhibit very high activity, with overpotentials of 15 and 40 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 in 1.0 mol/L KOH and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4, respectively. Furthermore, the composites are found to possess outstanding stability and rapid HER kinetics. X ray absorption fine structure analysis, supported by density functional theory calculations, shows charge rearrangement in single-atomic Ru, and the Ru dual sites promote active hydrogen adsorption and recombination. Ru S/DAs and Ru NCs demonstrate high electroactivity due to the electroactive Ru 4d orbitals. The introduction of Ru NCs activates the carbon support, providing a high electronic conductivity to transfer electrons from Ru NCs to Ru S/DAs, and facilitates water dissociation for the HER process.
Double Active Sites Promoting Hydrogen Evolution Activity and Stability of CoRuOH/Co2P by Rapid Hydrolysis

Abstract:Cobalt-based phosphides show excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, however, improving the intrinsic activity and stability of it in alkaline electrolyte still remains a challenge. Herein, CoRuOH/Co2P/CF with heterojunction structure was developed by means of molten salt and rapid hydrolysis (30 s). The OH− from rapid surface hydrolysis of Co2P as a hydrogen adsorption site can facilitate the formation of thin CoRuOH layer as a water dissociation site, which may bring out better synergistic effect for alkaline HER. Moreover, the covering of CoRuOH can improve the stability of Co2P for HER. When drives at 100 mA/cm2, it only requires overpotential of 81 mV in 1.0 mol/L KOH (25 °C). Even at higher current density (1000 mA/cm2), CoRuOH/Co2P/CF can also operate stability for at least 100 hours. When coupling with NiFe-LDH/IF in a two-electrode system, the voltage of NiFe-LDH/IF(+) || CoRuOH/Co2P/CF(−) at 1000 mA/cm2 is merely 1.77 V with 100 h, demonstrating great potential for water splitting. The implementation of this work provides a new strategy and reference for the further improvement of transition metal phosphides as HER electrocatalysts.
Dual Modulation of Hydroxyl Action on Ruthenium Surface by Single‐Atom Supports for Alkaline H2 Evolution

Abstract:AbstractRuthenium (Ru)‐based catalysts are known to accelerate the slow kinetics of the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, enhancing the transfer kinetics of adsorbed hydroxyl (OHad) remains challenging. Herein, a dual‐regulation strategy is presented to alleviate OH blockage on the catalyst surface, using a cluster‐level Ru electrocatalyst supported by single‐atom CoN4 generated in situ on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate that introducing oxophilic single‐atom CoN4 can mitigate the strong interaction between Ru and OHad by directly competing for OHad on the Ru surface, thereby preventing Ru site poisoning. Meanwhile, single‐atom CoN4 effectively modifies the electronic structure of Ru atomic clusters (ACs), indirectly optimizing the energy barriers for OH desorption at the Ru interface and promoting OHad release. The electronic interaction between Ru ACs and CoN4 also inhibits Ru atom migration, significantly enhancing catalytic stability. The resulting catalyst shows excellent HER activity at 10 mA cm−2 with a low overpotential of 15 mV in alkaline solution and remains stable at 200 mA cm−2 for over 1000 h. An alkaline anion‐exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) using this catalyst can exhibit an ultralow potential (1.785 V at 1 A·cm−2) and high stability at 500 mA·cm−2.
Enhancement of hydrogen evolution activity by tailoring the electronic structure in ruthenium-heteroatom-doped cobalt iron phosphide nanoframes

Abstract:Designing cost-effective and highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media at high current densities is challenging. In this study, we adopted Ru heteroatom doping and an open nanoframe structure to obtain excellent HER catalytic performance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) visualized the electron transfer due to Ru heteroatom doping in transition metal phosphides, to observe the modulated electronic structure of the Ru-doped CoFeP nanoframe (RCFP/NF). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and XPS analysis confirmed a d -band center downshift of the RCFP/NF, demonstrating the regulation of the optimal adsorbates (OH*/H*) adsorption free energies. Consequently, RCFP/NF with 4.7 wt % of Ru exhibits a low overpotential of 112 mV, 191 mV, and 219 mV at current densities of 10 mA cm −2 , 100 mA cm −2 , and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, and an excellent stability for 100 h at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 . This outstanding HER performance at high current density was attributed to the hydrophilic and aerophobic properties of the RCFP/NF catalyst surface that facilitate the exposure of active sites and H 2 gas desorption.

Abstract:Developing efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline water electrolysis is central to substantial progress of alkaline hydrogen production. Herein, a Ni5 P4 electrocatalyst incorporating single-atom Ru (Ni5 P4 -Ru) is synthesized through the filling of Ru3+ species into the metal vacancies of nickel hydroxides and subsequent phosphorization treatment. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray-based measurements, and electron microscopy observations confirm the strong interaction between the nickel-vacancy defect and Ru cation, resulting in more than 3.83 wt% single-atom Ru incorporation in the obtained Ni5 P4 -Ru. The Ni5 P4 -Ru as an alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst achieves low onset potential of 17 mV and an overpotential of 54 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 together with a small Tafel slope of 52.0 mV decade-1 and long-term stability. Further spectroscopy analyses combined with density functional theory calculations reveal that the doped Ru sites can cause localized structure polarization, which brings the low energy barrier for water dissociation on Ru site and the optimized hydrogen adsorption free energy on the interstitial site, well rationalizing the experimental reactivity.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are a promising catalyst material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, we introduced inexpensive red phosphorus (P 4 ) into a homogeneous solution as a phosphorus source. Using the electrostatic spinning technique combined with high temperature carbonization, we successfully prepared self-supported carbon nanofibers doped with nitrogen (N) and loaded with ruthenium (Ru)-modified cobalt phosphide (Co 2 P) nanoparticles catalysts (Ru@Co 2 P/CNFs). The Ru@Co 2 P phosphide nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of the carbon fibers, forming a three-dimensional network structure. The synergistic effect between the Ru and Co 2 P systems resulted in excellent catalytic activity and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline solutions. The N-doped conducting carbon matrix and large specific surface area of the active sites contributed to this enhanced performance. The Ru@Co 2 P/CNFs catalysts only required an overpotential of 48 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming the noble metal platinum/carbon (Pt/C) catalysts, which required an overpotential of 52 mV. Furthermore, the Ru@Co 2 P nanoparticles were protected by a carbon layer, preventing catalyst corrosion during long-term operation. The HER performance of the Ru@Co 2 P/CNFs catalysts remained stable even after 40 h of continuous operation, demonstrating their long-lasting stability. This research introduces a new approach to developing cost-effective and highly active self-supported network-structured phosphide catalysts.
