Abstract:A methodology for the automated time-domain characteristic parameter extraction of human pulse signals is presented. Due to the subjectivity and fuzziness of pulse diagnosis, the quantitative methods are needed. Up to now, the characteristic parameters are mostly obtained by labeling manually and reading directly from the pulse signal, which is an obstacle to realize the automated pulse recognition. To extract the parameters of pulse signals automatically, the idea is to start with the detection of characteristic points of pulse signals based on wavelet transform, and then determine the number of pulse waves based on chain code to label the characteristics. The time-domain parameters, which are endowed with important physiological significance by specialists of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), are computed based on the labeling result. The proposed methodology is testified by applying it to compute the parameters of five hundred pulse signal samples collected from clinic. The results are mostly in accord with the expertise, which indicate that the method we proposed is feasible and effective, and can extract the features of pulse signals accurately, which can be expected to facilitate the modernization of pulse diagnosis.

Abstract:This paper presents a quantitative method for automatic identification of human pulse signals. The idea is to start with the extraction of characteristic parameters and then to construct the recognition model based on Bayesian networks. To identify depth, frequency and rhythm, several parameters are proposed. To distinguish the strength and shape, which cannot be represented by one or several parameters and are hard to recognize, the main time-domain feature parameters are computed based on the feature points of the pulse signal. Then the extracted parameters are taken as the input and five models for automatic pulse signal identification are constructed based on Bayesian networks. Experimental results demonstrate that the method is feasible and effective in recognizing depth, frequency, rhythm, strength and shape of pulse signals, which can be expected to facilitate the modernization of pulse diagnosis.
Heartbeat Classification Using Discrete Wavelet Transform and Kernel Principal Component Analysis

Abstract:In this paper, an automatic heartbeat Classification method based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) is proposed. DWT is employed to extract time-frequency characteristics of heartbeats, and KPCA is utilized to extract a more complete nonlinear representation of the principal components. In addition, RR interval features are also adopted. A three-layer multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) is used as a classifier. The MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database was used as a test bench. In the “class-oriented” evaluation, the classification accuracy is 98.48%, which is comparable to previous works. In the “subject-oriented” evaluation, the classification accuracy is 92.34%. The Se (sensitivity) of class “S” and “V” is 62.0% and 84.4% respectively, and the P+ (positive predictive rate) of class “S” and “V” is 70.6% and 77.7% respectively. The results show an improvement on previous works. The proposed method suggested a better performance than the state-of-art method in real situation.

Abstract:This paper analyses a key problem in the quantification of pulse diagnosis. Due to the subjectivity and fuzziness of pulse diagnosis, quantitative methods are needed. To extract the parameters of pulse signals, the prerequisite is to detect the corners of pulse signals correctly. Up to now, the pulse parameters are mostly acquired by marking the pulse corners manually, which is an obstacle to modernize pulse diagnosis. Therefore, a new automatic parameters extraction approach for pulse signals using wavelet transform is presented. The results testified that the method we proposed is feasible and effective and can detect corners of pulse signals accurately, which can be expected to facilitate the modernization of pulse diagnosis.
Some Nonlinear Parameters of PP Intervals of Pulse Main Peaks

Abstract:The PP intervals of pulse main peaks from healthy and unhealthy people (arrhythmia) have different nonlinear characteristics. In this paper, the extraction of PP intervals of pulse main peaks is achieved by picking up P peaks of pulse wave with wavelet transform. Furthermore, several nonlinear parameters (correlative dimensions, maximum Lyapunov exponents, complexity and approximate entropy) of the PP intervals of pulse main peaks extracted from normal and unhealthy pulse signals are calculated, with the results showing that these nonlinear parameters calculated from the main wave interval signals are helpful for analyzing human’s health state and diagnosing heart diseases.

Abstract:Analysis of pulse signals has the following problems: low accuracy of frequency domain analysis,lack of stability analysis and over-dependence on experience to extract features in frequency domain.Combined with Lasso regression,the wavelet multi-resolution decomposition was used to extract features in precise frequency bands in order to mine the diseases features of pulse signals in frequency domain.A class of pulse signals of patients with cardiovascular diseases was analyzed to verify the stability of frequency features in time domain.The analysis of atrial fibrillation and coronary heart diseases was implemented to show how to extract feature bands and classify the two diseases.Then a linear classification model was constructed to realize the automatic identification of both diseases.

Abstract:Pulse wave contains human physiological and pathological information. Different people will exhibit different characteristics, and hence determining the characteristic points of the pulse wave of human physiological health makes sense. It is common that we extract the characteristic value of pulse wave signal with the method based on wavelet transform on a small scale, and then determine the locations of the characteristic points by modulus maxima and modulus minima. Before determining characteristic value by detecting modulus maxima and modulus minima, we need to determine every period of the pulse wave. This paper presents a new kind of adaptive threshold determination method which is more effective. It can accurately determine every period of the pulse wave, and then extract characteristic values by modulus maxima and modulus minima in every period of the pulse wave. The method presented in this paper promotes the research utilizing pulse wave on health life.

Abstract:Pulse diagnosis is an essential part in four basic diagnostic methods (inspection, listening, inquiring and palpation) in traditional Chinese medicine, which depends on longtime training and rich experience, so computerized pulse acquisition has been proposed and studied to ensure the objectivity. To imitate the process that doctors using three fingertips with different pressures to feel fluctuations in certain areas containing three acupoints, we established a five dimensional pulse signal acquisition system adopting a non-contacting optical metrology method, 3D digital image correlation, to record the full-field displacements of skin fluctuations under different pressures. The system realizes real-time full-field vibration mode observation with 10 FPS. The maximum sample frequency is 472 Hz for detailed post-processing. After acquisition, the signals are analyzed according to the amplitude, pressure, and pulse wave velocity. The proposed system provides a novel optical approach for digitalizing pulse diagnosis and massive pulse signal data acquisition for various types of patients. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Chinese medicine has a long history, and pulse diagnosis can detect physiological and pathological changes in the human body. With the rise and development of artificial intelligence, the objectification and modernization of TCM has also come a long way. In the process of pulse diagnosis objectification, the extraction of feature datum points in the time domain is an indispensable step. In this paper, starting with the pulse wave time domain feature extraction method, we systematically summarize the feature point extraction methods, including single-period feature point feature extraction and multi-period feature point extraction, and then on this basis, combined with the extraction experience of the collected data, we propose an improved slope method and partition method (ISPA) for pulse wave feature extraction research.

Human pulse recognition based on wavelet transform and BP network

Abstract:Pulse diagnosis is one of the most important methods in traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis. In order to classify the human pulses effectively, feature extraction and pattern recognition are needed. In this paper wavelet transform is used to the feature extraction and the third layer wavelet energy and the wavelet entropy values are selected as the wavelet domain features. Therefore a new feature selection scheme is proposed, which combines wavelet domain features, time domain features and frequency domain features. Firstly, three kinds of features are extracted from a human pulse signal, and then the total 13 extracted features are fed to the BP neural network for pattern recognition. We name this method WBPN. The proposed WBPN method is tested on 12 different kinds of human pulse signals, and the average recognition rate of untrained test samples reaches 98.45%, which is higher than most of the existing methods. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed WBPN approach in human pulse recognition.

Abstract:The research of human pulse objectification plays a very important role in inheriting and developing the study of pulse in Chinese Medicine,as an important part of it,pulse condition recognition becomes a focus of present study.Traditional feature extracting method and pulse condition recognition method are based on time-domain and artificial neural network.Two algorithms are proposed in this paper,they are an algorithm for feature extracting based on wavelet transform and ILVQ,an improved LVQ algorithm.The experimental results indicate that these two algorithms have their own superiority.

Abstract:This experiment is based on the principle of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pulse diagnosis, the human pulse signal collected by the sensor is organized into a dataset, and the algorithms are designed to apply feature extraction. After denoising, smoothing and eliminating baseline drift of the photoelectric sensors pulse data of several groups of subjects, we designed three algorithms to describe the difference between the two-dimensional images of the pulse data of normal people and patients with chronic diseases. Convert the calculated feature values into multi-dimensional arrays, enter the decision tree (DT) to balance the differences in human physiological conditions, then train in the support vector machine kernel method (SVM-KM) classifier. Experimental results show that the application of these feature mining algorithms to disease detection greatly improves the reliability of TCM diagnosis.

Abstract:In recent years, pulse signals have become increasingly important in healthcare, such as cardiovascular disease diagnosis. However, there exists no commonly acknowledged pulse sensing system that simultaneously features stability, accuracy, convenience, and cost efficiency. To address this problem, we present a novel pulse sensing system for human health assessment. The system consists of a T-structured pulse sensor, a circuit system, and a host. Specifically, our sensor has a higher signal-to-noise ratio compared with similar sensors and can be scaled equally, enabling it to greatly reduce the system complexity and cost. Experiments have shown that the pulse signal measured by our system is not only stable, and high fidelity, but also it is suitable for medical assessment, like arrhythmia detection. Furthermore, our system can also perform accurate measurements under different pressures, akin to the pulse diagnosis technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In conclusion, the T-structured pulse sensing system shows great potential for medical and healthcare applications.

Abstract:We apply the recently developed adaptive non-harmonic model based on the wave-shape function, as well as the time-frequency analysis tool called synchrosqueezing transform (SST) to model and analyze oscillatory physiological signals. To demonstrate how the model and algorithm work, we apply them to study the pulse wave signal. By extracting features called the spectral pulse signature, {and} based on functional regression, we characterize the hemodynamics from the radial pulse wave signals recorded by the sphygmomanometer. Analysis results suggest the potential of the proposed signal processing approach to extract health-related hemodynamics features.

Abstract:Abstract Nowadays, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is attracting more attention. As the most complete methods of pulse diagnosis, the method named ‘three regions nine subdivisions’ has come to the fore. It is important to collect accurate pulse signals in this way. Hence a pulse signal acquisition system is developed, which includes a pulse sensor based on PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) piezoelectric film, charge amplifier, low-pass filter, voltage amplifier, voltage follower, and a software system based on LabVIEW for controlling the acquisition process and storing data. And PVDF piezoelectric film has suitable performance for this system which as a new kind of polymer piezoelectric material. Finally, the experiment results demonstrate that the system can extract effective pulse signals without heavy pressure, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent analysis on pulse signals.

Abstract:Humans have a variety of pulse waveforms based on their physiological state. The recognition of the feature points of the pulse wave is very helpful in analyzing the body’s physiological and pathological conditions and in preventing and diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. This paper proposes an accurate recognition algorithm of the feature points based on wavelet analysis and time domain characteristics of the pulse wave. Further, this study examines the Hidden Markov Model and performs non-invasive blood pressure estimation on a number of subjects. The experiments show that the algorithm can effectively identify the feature points of the pulse wave. The results of the model are consistent with the actual measurement results and the correlation coefficient reached 96 %, which indicates that the algorithm is significant as a method for non-invasive blood pressure monitoring.

Abstract:Pulse diagnosis equipment used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long been developed for collecting pulse information and in TCM research. However, it is still difficult to implement pulse taking automatically or efficiently in clinical practice. Here, we present a digital protocol for TCM pulse information collection based on bionic pulse diagnosis equipment, which ensures high efficiency, reliability and data integrity of pulse diagnosis information. A four-degree-of-freedom pulse taking platform together with a wrist bracket can satisfy the spatial positioning and angle requirements for individually adaptive pulse acquisition. Three-dimensional reconstruction of a wrist surface and an image localization model are combined to provide coordinates of the acquisition position and detection direction automatically. Three series elastic joints can not only simulate the TCM pulse taking method that "Three fingers in a straight line, the middle finger determining the 'Guan' location and finger pulp pressing on the radial artery," but also simultaneously carry out the force-controlled multi-gradient pressing process. In terms of pulse information integrity, this proposed protocol can generate rich pulse information, including basic individual information, pulse localization distribution, multi-gradient dynamic pulse force time series, and objective pulse parameters, which can help establish the fundamental data sets that are required as the pulse phenotype for subsequent comprehensive analysis of pulse diagnosis. The implementation of this scheme is beneficial to promote the standardization of the digitalized collection of pulse information, the effectiveness of detecting abnormal health status, and the promotion of the fundamental and clinical research of TCM, such as TCM pulse phenomics.

Abstract:Abstract Arterial pulse waveforms contain a wealth of information about the cardiovascular system. There is a lack of physical meaning in the mathematical model of arterial pulse waves, while the physical model fails to offer individuality as too many assumptions are involved. In this article, we focus on promoting the interpretability of the arterial pulse mathematical model. The proposed method is based on newly developed 3‐term fitting functions individualized by the physiological parameter assignment, which are the peak times of the reflected and dicrotic waves in a pulse. In this manner, the model allows decomposition of the pulse into sub‐signals with clear physiological significance. With nearly 10,000 pulse fitting experiments, it is demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms the standard methods in fitting accuracy while providing parameters linked to hemodynamic characteristics and common clinical indices such as the peripheral augmentation index (pAI). The proposed method innovatively maintains the individuality and accuracy of mathematical models while improving the interpretability of their parameters. The applications of this newly developed method, which explicitly incorporates hemodynamic characteristics, are expected to be particularly valuable in future pulse wave decomposition studies.

Intelligent Detection of Pulse Position in Traditional Chinese Medicine Based on Bionic Pulse Diagnose Robotics

Abstract:Pulse position reflects the important physiological state of human body according to diagnosis theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Researchers in this field hope to develop an objective approach to detect pulse position without human intervention. In this study, we use our lab-developed bionic pulse diagnose robotics to automatically collect 10-egraedients pulsation waveforms for a total of 200 subjects. Meanwhile, the pulse position labelling of 0-100 is accomplished by a TCM specialist. We extract key features that are highly related to the pulse position according to TCM theories, and find that Summit Pulse Pressure, S1/S2, and Body Mass Index are significantly correlated with pulse position with R-values of -0.27, -0.29, -0.18, respectively. Then, we derive a pulse position prediction model based on the deep learning framework to automatically predict pulse position, with final prediction error of ± 10 at 93%, and error of ±5 at 83%. In summary, this study investigates pulse diagnosis robotics deriving key features and intelligent prediction model for pulse position, which laid a foundation for further research such as TCM big data and omics-wise investigations.
A Real-Time Vision-Based Heart Rate Measurement Framework For Home Nursing Assistance

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a practical framework to realize accurate, real-time and contactless heart rate measurement, which is essential for home nursing and medical assistance. This framework is composed of the Second Order Blind Identification to decompose the hidden remote photoplethysmogram signal, a series of signal analysis methods to correctly calculate heart rate and a lightweight but accurate peak detection method to draw heartbeat curve. The results are compared to a home pulse oximeter and proved to be highly consistent with it under various interaction scenes such as daily conversation. The heartbeat curve generated by the proposed framework also shows agreement with the oximeter. This framework is robust with great potential for domestic health assistance and emotional care in an ageless aging society.
