Abstract:The magnetic properties of cobalt-based oxypnictides SmCoAsO are investigated by measuring magnetization, magnetoresistance and specific heat. The compound undergoes a ferromagnetic (FM) transition around T c of 80 K, and a ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition below T N1 of about 45 K, and finally an AFM order of Sm ion at T N2 of 5.6 K. The weak FM order should originate from the itinerant 3d electrons of Co ions in the CoAs layers. We propose that the magnetic structure should be A-type AFM, which means that the FM order remains within the CoAs layer and the magnetic coupling between the CoAs layers becomes AFM below T N1 of 45 K. The AFM coupling between the CoAs layers should be very weak. A magnetic field µ0 H of about 2 T may cause an AFM-FM metamagnetic transition. A rich magnetic phase diagram is established and the interplay between the 3d electrons of Co ions and 4f electrons of Sm ions is discussed.

Abstract:We investigate superconductivity and transport properties of Co doped SmFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$AsO system. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-density wave (SDW) order is rapidly suppressed by Co doping, and superconductivity emerges as $x$ $\geq$ 0.05. $T_c$$^{mid}$ increases with increasing Co content, shows a maximum of 17.2 K at the optimally doping of $x\sim$ 0.10. A phase diagram is derived based on the transport measurements and a dome-like $T_c$ versus $x$ curve is established. Meanwhile we found that the normal state thermopower might consist of two different contributions. One contribution increases gradually with increasing $x$, and the other contribution is abnormally enhanced in the superconducting window 0.05 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.20, and shows a dome-like doping dependence. A close correlation between $T_{c}$ and the abnormally enhanced term of thermopower is proposed.

Abstract:Two cobalt oxyfluoride antiferromagnets CoMOF5(pyz)(H2O)2 (M = Nb 1, Ta 2; pyz = pyrazine) have been synthesized via conventional hydrothermal methods and characterized by thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, electron spin resonance (ESR), magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization measurements at both static low field and pulsed high field. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicates both compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/m with a two-dimensional Co2+ triangular lattice in the ab plane, separated by the nonmagnetic MOF5 (M = Nb 1, Ta 2) octahedra along the c-axis with large intertriangular-lattice Co···Co distance. Because of low dimensionality together with frustrated triangular lattice, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit no long-range antiferromagnetic order until ∼3.7 K. Moreover, a spin flop transition is observed in the magnetization curves at 2 K for both compounds, which is further confirmed by ESR spectra. In addition, the ESR spectra suggest the presence of a zero-field spin gap in both compounds. The high field magnetization measured at 2 K saturates at ∼7 T with Ms = 1.55 μB for 1 and 1.71 μB for 2, respectively, after subtracting the Van Vleck paramagnetic contribution, which is usually observed for Co2+ ions with pseudospin spin of 1/2 at low temperature. Powder-averaged magnetic anisotropy of g = 3.10 for 1 (3.42 for 2) and magnetic superexchange interaction J/kB = −3.2 K for 1 (−3.6 K for 2) are obtained.The Supporting Information is available free of charge at https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.1c01654.Details of powder XRD patterns, TGA curves and FTIR spectra, and calculation results (PDF)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A new iron-base superconductor SmFFeAs is synthesized via solid-state metathesis reaction by using SmFCl and LiFeAs as precursors. The compound crystallized in the tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type structure with the space group P4/nmm and lattice parameters of a = 3.9399(0) Å and c = 8.5034(1) Å. The superconducting diamagnetic transition occurs at 56 K for the parent compound, which confirmed by the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. The appearance of superconductivity without extrinsic doping could be ascribed to the self-doping owing to the mixed valence of Sm ions. The as-synthesized SmFFeAs serves as a new self-doped parent compound for oxygen-free high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors.

Abstract:Although a great number of single-ion magnets (SIMs) and spin-crossover (SCO) compounds have been discovered, multifunctional materials with the combination of SCO and SIM properties are extremely scarce. Here magnetic studies have been carried out for a mononuclear, five-coordinate cobalt(ii) complex [Co(3,4-lut)4Br]Br (1) with square pyramidal geometry. Direct-current magnetic measurement confirms the spin transition between the S = 1/2 and 3/2 states in the range of 150-290 K with a small hysteresis loop. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility reveals slow magnetization relaxation under an applied dc field of 3000 Oe. The work here presents the first instance of the five-coordinate mononuclear cobalt(ii)-based SIM exhibiting the thermally induced complete SCO.

Abstract:A series of SmCo1-xFexAsO (x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) polycrystalline samples were synthesized, and their transport and magnetic properties were studied. Similar to the undoped SmCoAsO, these Fe-doped samples of SmCo1-xFexAsO also undergo successive magnetic phase transitions associated with the Co or Fe magnetic moments below 100 K, i.e., the system become ferromagnetic (FM) ordered first below the Curie temperature T-c, and then become antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered with further decreasing temperature. With Fe doping on the Co site, both FM (T-c) and AFM (T-N1) transition temperatures are rapidly suppressed and then both T-c and T-N1 approaching zero temperature at x = 0.3, whereas the AFM order (T-N2) of Sm3+ moments below 5.1 K is still robust. Based on these results, the magnetic phase diagram in the Co-rich side of the SmCo1-xFexAsO system is established.

Abstract:Based on the first-principles calculations, we have investigated the geometry, binding properties, density of states and band structures of the novel superconductor LaFe1-xCoxAsO and its parent compounds with the ZrCuSiAs structure. We demonstrate that La-O bond and TM-As (TM=Fe or Co) bond are both strongly covalent, while the LaO and TMAs layers have an almost ionic interaction through the Bader charge analysis. Partial substitution of iron with cobalt modify the Fermi level from a steep edge to a flat slope, which explains why in this system Co doping suppresses the spin density wave (SDW) transition.

Abstract:Spin crossover (SCO) complexes have been extensively explored as bistable materials and recently used as molecular modules for the development of new multifunctional molecular magnetic materials. Herein, we present the synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic, and electrical properties of a mononuclear cobalt complex constructed by a halogen-functionalized terpyridine derivative and organosulfonate. A complete and gradual spin transition with the T-1/2=200 K was observed for the Co2+ ions through both the magnetic measurement and dynamic crystallographic experiments. Interestingly, considerable room temperature proton conductivity of 6.9x10(-5) S cm(-1) under 98% relative humidity was evidenced because of the presence of sulfonate-assisted hydrogen-bonded proton hopping pathways. The forgoing results not only provide an unprecedented proton-conducting cobalt(II) SCO complex but also a promising way for the design and construction of bifunctional SCO molecular conductors via the incorporation of SCO transition and proton conduction.

Abstract:In this work we report the crystal growth of SmOFe 1 − x Co x As single crystals with Co content 0 ≤ x ≤ 0 . 25 via the solid-state single crystal growth method at ambient pressure. The centrepiece of this method is to trigger the abnormal grain growth process, where only a small amount of grains grows significantly larger than the majority of grains. In its extreme case, this diffusion-controlled process in the solid state may foster large and three-dimensional crystals that grow out of a polycrystalline matrix. Since most parameters known to trigger solid-state single crystal growth are known only empirically, we discuss in detail which are the optimal parameters for the growth of SmOFe 1 − x Co x As single crystals and rationalize the mechanisms that may be relevant to activate the diffusion-driven solid-state single crystal growth in the system under study. The plate-like crystals show distinct facets, which is a common feature of crystals grown by this method, with lateral dimensions of up to 4 . 8 mm and a thickness of up to 0 . 06 mm . The single crystals of this series as well as the corresponding polycrystals were characterized and compared regarding their crystal structure, chemical composition, morphology as well as magnetic and superconducting properties. Interestingly, our characterization data suggest a solubility gap for high Co contents. This finding is supported by comparing with previous reports, albeit existence of a solubility gap is not discussed therein. As expected across the series, charge doping suppresses the structural and magnetic transitions until for 5% Co content superconductivity is established. In particular, the splitting and clear differentiation of the structural and subsequent magnetic transition is rarely seen for R E OFeAs compounds, but well resolved for the Fe-rich SmOFe 1 − x Co x As single crystals and even for the x = 0 . 0125 crystal, but smeared out for the corresponding polycrystalline samples. Hence, the SmOFe 1 − x Co x As single crystal presented in this work are of exceptional high quality.

Abstract:A magnetic-field-induced irreversible metamagnetic phase transition from antiferro- to ferromagnetism, which leads to an anomalous initial-magnetization curve lying outside the magnetic hysteresis loop, is reported in arc-melted SmCo7−xSix alloys. The transition temperatures are near room temperature, much higher than other compounds with similar initial curves. Detailed investigation shows that this phenomenon is dependent on temperature, magnetic field and Si content and shows some interesting characteristics. It is suggested that varying interactions between the Sm and Co layers in the crystal are responsible for the formation of a metastable AFM structure, which induces the anomalous phenomenon in as-cast alloys. The random occupation of 3g sites by Si and Co atoms also has an effect on this phenomenon.

Abstract:In this study, we report a new strategy for preparing magnetically anisotropic SmCo5 single crystal particles by reductive annealing of precursors with specially designed nanostructures. The precursors containing urchin-shaped Co clusters and Sm(OH)(3) nanorods were synthesized by a hydrothermal process. Then we coated these precursors of Co/Sm(OH)(3) nanocomposites with Ca(OH)(2), and the following thermal reduction generated SmCo5 particles, where the original size and morphology of the precursor were basically preserved after undergoing high temperature annealing. The single crystalline SmCo5 particles exhibit strong magnetic anisotropy and excellent room temperature magnetic properties: remanence of 8.1 kG, coercivity of 25.7 kOe, and a maximum energy product of 15.8 MGOe, which is one of the highest maximum energy products for chemically synthesized nanostructured SmCo5 particles presently reported.

Abstract:We present here the syntheses, crystal structures, and spin crossover (SCO) properties of a series of halogen-functionalized cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(Brphtpy)(2)](OTf)(2)center dot DMF center dot 2H(2)O (1), [Co(Brphtpy)(2)](HBS)(2)center dot H2O (2), [Co(Brphtpy)(2)](MQ)(2)center dot 2MeCN center dot 3H(2)O (3) (Brphtpy=4'-(4-Bromophenyl)-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine; OTf-=trifluoromethanesulfonate; HBS-=hydroxybenzenesulfonate dihydrate; MQ(-)=methyl orange). Variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed mononuclear compounds of 1-3 consisted of [Co(Brphtpy)(2)](2+) SCO active units and organosulfonate anions and no structural phase transformation happened in measured high-low temperature. The packing structures of these complexes were tuned by varying organosulfonates. However, no notable supramolecular interactions can be found, in turn leading to gradual, incomplete, and non-hysteretic SCO behaviors. Interestingly, the SCO behaviors of these three complexes were significantly modified after the removal of lattice solvents. Combined structural and magnetic investigations revealed the non-cooperative supramolecular packing structures, guest internal pressure, and the small structural distortions of the SCO units should be responsible for the worse SCO properties of 1-3. The foregoing results show that to achieve high-performance Co2+ SCO, both the weak interactions, internal pressure, and structural distortion should be considered during the design and construction of SCO complexes.
A unique synthesis of rare-earth-Co-based single crystal particles by "self-aligned" Co nano-arrays

Abstract:In this study, anisotropic SmCo5 magnets were prepared by a distinctive method, which is the high-temperature reductive annealing of Co@Sm2O3 with a specially designed nanostructure. High resolution transmission electron microscopy and elemental mapping show that the precursor self-assembly is composed of hcp-structured Co nano-rods with a coherent crystallographic orientation. During high temperature reduction, the Sm2O3 shell preserves the original morphology and alignment of these anisotropic Co nano-arrays, providing a template for hcp-structured SmCo5 single crystal particle synthesis. The as-prepared SmCo5 magnets exhibit well-controlled size and morphology, and a high coercivity of 30.9 kOe at room temperature. No stabilizer coating is necessary to prevent the formation of polycrystals in this synthesis.
Synthesis, crystal structure and spin-density-wave anomaly of the iron arsenide-fluoride SrFeAsF

Abstract:The new quaternary iron arsenide-fluoride SrFeAsF with the tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type structure was synthesized and the crystal structure was determined by X-ray powder diffraction (P4/nmm, a=399.30(1), c=895.46(1) pm). SrFeAsF undergoes a structural and magnetic phase transition at 175 K, accompanied by strong anomalies in the specific heat, electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility. In the course of this transition, the space group symmetry changes from tetragonal (P4/nmm) to orthorhombic (Cmme). 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy experiments show a single signal at room temperature at an isomer shift of 0.30(1) mm/s and magnetic hyperfine-field splitting below the phase transition temperature. Our results clearly show that SrFeAsF exhibits a spin density wave (SDW) anomaly at 175 K very similar to LaFeAsO, the parent compound of the iron arsenide-oxide superconductors and thus SrFeAsF may serve as a further parent compound for oxygen-free iron arsenide superconductors.
