Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an ill-posed Cauchy problem involving a stochastic parabolic equation. We first establish a Carleman estimate for this equation. Leveraging this estimate, we derive the conditional stability and convergence rate of the Tikhonov regularization method for the aforementioned ill-posed Cauchy problem. To complement our theoretical analysis, we employ kernel-based learning theory to implement the completed Tikhonov regularization method for several numerical examples.

Abstract:This article is devoted to solving a backward problem for general nonlinear parabolic equations in Sobolev spaces. The problem is hardly solved by computation since it is severely ill‐posed in Hadamard's sense. Using the Fourier transform and the truncation of high‐frequency components, we construct a regularized solution for the problem from the data given inexactly. As usual for ill‐posed problems, the rate of convergence can be obtained under additional smoothness assumptions on the regularity of the exact solution, the so‐called source conditions. By using a source condition in a generalized form, we prove a convergence estimate in a Sobolev space Hq(Rn) . Corresponding to different levels of the source condition, the convergence rates are improved gradually. We apply our theory to the backward problem with a convection–diffusion operator and a cubic nonlinearity. Finally, the numerical results are presented to test the validity of the proposed regularization method.

Abstract:We consider solving a severely ill-posed problem for determining the surface temperature and heat flux distribution of the nonhomogeneous sideways heat equation by a quasi-reversibility regularization method. An analytical solution is deduced based on the Fourier transform, and then, the logarithmic-type error estimate for the regularized solution is achieved. Finally, three numerical examples, including smooth and non-smooth functions, validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the backward problem of determining initial condition for some class of nonlinear parabolic equations in multidimensional domain where data are given under random noise. This problem is ill-posed, i.e., the solution does not depend continuously on the data. To regularize the instable solution, we develop some new methods to construct some new regularized solution. We also investigate the convergence rate between the regularized solution and the solution of our equations. In particular, we establish results for several equations with constant coefficients and time dependent coefficients. The equations with constant coefficients include heat equation, extended Fisher-Kolmogorov equation, Swift-Hohenberg equation and many others. The equations with time dependent coefficients include Fisher type Logistic equations, Huxley equation, Fitzhugh-Nagumo equation. The methods developed in this paper can also be applied to get approximate solutions to several other equations including 1-D Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, 1-D modified Swift-Hohenberg equation, strongly damped wave equation and 1-D Burger's equation with randomly perturbed operator.

Abstract:For any subcritical index of regularity s > 3/2, we prove the almost global well posedness for the 2-dimensional semilinear wave equation with the cubic nonlinearity in the derivatives, when the initial data are small in the Sobolev space H s × H s−1 with certain angular regularity. The lifespan is known to be sharp in general. The main new ingredient in the proof is an endpoint version of the generalized Strichartz estimates in the space . In the last section, we also consider the general semilinear wave equations with the spatial dimension n ≥ 2 and the order of nonlinearity p ≥ 3.
A variational regularization method for solving the non-characteristic Cauchy problem in multiple dimensions

Abstract:In this manuscript, we consider the non-characteristic Cauchy problem, which is naturally a general form including inverse heat conduction problem and sideways parabolic equation. This problem is a severely ill-posed problem, that is, the solution (if it exists) does not depend continuously on the data. We introduce a simple and powerful variational regularization method which links to the regularization of Truncated Fourier operators pseudo-inverses. Under smoothness condition with p-norm, we deduce the error estimation, which can be expressed by Hölder type, between the exact solution and regularized approximation in the practical case where the data is noisy. Meanwhile, we propose an a posteriori parameter choice rule based on the Morozov principle and obtain the error estimation. At last, two numerical examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

Elliptic regularization of some semilinear parabolic free boundary problems

Abstract:We prove existence of strong solutions to a family of some semilinear parabolic free boundary problems by means of elliptic regularization. Existence of solutions is obtained in two steps: we first show some uniform energy estimates and then we pass to the weak limit. To carry out this second step, we establish uniform non-degeneracy estimates for the approximating sequence as well as parabolic non-degeneracy and optimal regularity for the limit solution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the elliptic regularization approach is used in the context of parabolic obstacle problems.

Abstract:We study regularization of ill-posed equations involving multiplication operators when the multiplier function is positive almost everywhere and zero is an accumulation point of the range of this function. Such equations naturally arise from equations based on non-compact self-adjoint operators in Hilbert space, after applying unitary transformations arising out of the spectral theorem. For classical regularization theory, when noisy observations are given and the noise is deterministic and bounded, then non-compactness of the ill-posed equations is a minor issue. However, for statistical ill-posed equations with non-compact operators less is known if the data are blurred by white noise. We develop a theory for spectral regularization with emphasis on this case. In this context, we highlight several aspects, in particular, we discuss the intrinsic degree of ill-posedness in terms of rearrangements of the multiplier function. Moreover, we address the required modifications of classical regularization schemes in order to be used for non-compact statistical problems, and we also introduce the concept of the effective ill-posedness of the operator equation under white noise. This study is concluded with prototypical examples for such equations, as these are deconvolution equations and certain final value problems in evolution equations.

Abstract:We introduce a regularization method with two differential operators for solving a linear ill-posed operator equation system. The existence and uniqueness of regularized solutions to the problem are derived. With an a priori as well as an a posteriori parameter choice strategy, convergence and convergence rates of the regularized solution are also obtained. As an application, we apply the regularization to a simultaneous inversion of the source term and the initial value problem for a heat conduction equation, numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:We investigate a time-dependent inverse source problem for a parabolic partial differential equation with an integral constraint and subject to Neumann boundary conditions in a domain of R d \mathbb{R}^{d} , d ‚Č• 1 d\geq 1 . We prove the well-posedness as well as higher regularity of solutions in H√∂lder spaces. We then develop and implement an algorithm that we use to approximate solutions of the inverse problem by means of a finite element discretization in space. Due to instability in inverse problems, we apply Tikhonov regularization combined with the discrepancy principle for selecting the regularization parameter in order to obtain a stable reconstruction. Our numerical results show that the proposed scheme is an accurate technique for approximating solutions of this inverse problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a backward problem of 1D multi-term time–space fractional diffusion equation, which is ill-posed. With the help of quasi-reversibility regularization method, we give the regularization solution, based on some properties of Fourier transform and Mittag-Leffler functions. Besides, we establish a-priori and a-posteriori convergence estimates, respectively. Finally, we illustrate two numerical examples to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of our proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a high-accuracy and fast numerical method for the Cauchy problem associated with the two-dimensional modified Helmholtz equation defined in a complex region. The problem is solved using the method of fundamental solution (MFS) in conjunction with the Tikhonov regularization method, whose side constraint is a Sobolev norm. A suitable regularization parameter is determined by the L-curve method. Numerical results are presented for problems with given noisy Cauchy data. Two error criteria are employed and we compare the numerical results with those from other methods for these problems.
On Spectral Methods for Volterra Integral Equations and the Convergence Analysis

Abstract:The main purpose of this work is to provide a novel numerical approach for the Volterra integral equations based on a spectral approach. A Legendre-collocation method is proposed to solve the Volterra integral equations of the second kind. We provide a rigorous error analysis for the proposed method, which indicates that the numerical errors decay exponentially provided that the kernel function and the source function are sufficiently smooth. Numerical results confirm the theoretical prediction of the exponential rate of convergence. The result in this work seems to be the first successful spectral approach (with theoretical justification) for the Volterra type equations.
Regularization Techniques for Estimating the Source in a Complete Parabolic Equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$

Abstract:In this article, the problem of identifying the source term in transport processes given by a complete parabolic equation is studied mathematically from noisy measurements taken at an arbitrary fixed time. The problem is solved analytically with Fourier techniques and it is shown that this solution is not stable. Three single parameter families of regularization operators are proposed to dealt with the instability of the solution. Each of them is designed to compensate the factor that causes the instability of the inverse operator. Moreover, a rule of choice for the regularization parameter is included and a Hölder error bound type is obtained for each estimation. Numerical examples of different characteristics are presented to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed strategies.

Abstract:This paper investigates the construction, analysis and implementation of a novel iterative regularization scheme with general convex penalty term for nonlinear inverse problems in Banach spaces. The method is formulated by combining the homotopy perturbation technique. The penalty term is allowed to be nonsmooth to include L1-norm or total variation-like penalty functionals, especially suitable for detecting the special features of the sought solutions such as sparsity or piecewise constant. By using tools from convex analysis in Banach spaces, we establish the detailed convergence and stability results. Numerical simulations for one-dimensional and two-dimensional parameter identification problems are performed to validate that our approach is competitive in terms of reducing the overall computational time in comparison with the existing Landweber iteration with general convex penalty. Moreover, our approach is used to the non-Gaussian noisy data to illustrate the iterative regularization in Banach spaces.

Abstract:Usual spectral methods are very effective for problems with smooth solutions, but their accuracy will be severely limited if solution of the underlying problems exhibits singular behavior. We develop in this paper enriched spectral-Galerkin methods (ESG) to deal with a class of problems for which the form of leading singular solutions can be determined. Several strategies are developed to overcome the ill conditioning due to the addition of singular functions as basis functions, and to efficiently solve the approximate solution in the enriched space. We validate ESG by solving a variety of elliptic problems with weakly singular solutions.

Based on the new stability estimates, a regularization method is proposed for which error estimates are available.
