Abstract:According to the rendering equation, the diffuse and the specular components of the outgoing intensity of each surface patch should be solved simultaneously. Rather than establishing a huge set of linear equations defining the unknown directional intensities for all directions and all surface patches, we expand the concept of the delta form-factor which concerns the light energy transfer of a surface patch along a respective direction. As the delta form-factor for non-diffuse surface patches are dependent on the spatial and spectral distributions of light energy, they could not be calculated geometrically. In this paper, we present a new radiosity approach which progressively approximates the delta form-factors and the light energy distributions within a general environment to the correct solution. The nucleus of our approach is procedural iteration. Statistics indicate the potentials of this method for complex non-diffuse environments.

Abstract:A new formula for accurately evaluating form-factors based on the analytic solution is presented. Each receiving patch is divided into three parts, namely the totally lit area, the umbra area, and the approximative penumbra area, according to its relative position to the source patch. The precise form-factor from the source patch to any sample point in the totally lit area is calculated and a corresponding amount of light energy is transferred. The totally lit area is divided further into subpatches if the difference of radiosity at its vertices exceeds a given threshold. For a sample point in the approximative penumbra area, the exact area on the source patch that can be seen from the sample point is determined by projecting the in-between surface patches onto the source patch. The exact amount of light energy transferred from the source to this sample point can then be estimated. The requirement for a better interpolation scheme for rendering is highlighted.

Abstract:Based on the theory of light energy transfer between two differential diffuse surface areas, a generalized radiosity approach is presented. Unlike the conventional radiosity method, curved surfaces are subdivided into triangular surface patches, radiosity is assummed to be vary across each triangular surface patch. By adopting linear interpolation scheme over each triangular surface patch, we have established a complete set of approximated radiosity equations. Their unknowns are radiosities of differential surface areas located at all vertices of surface patches. The generalized radiosity equation has also been extended to non‐diffuse environments. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate the great potential of this method,

Abstract:As form-factor calculation costs about 90% of the computing time when applying the radiosity approach for realistic image synthesis, it is of great significance to reduce the required computation. An accelerated radiosity algorithm for general complex environments, based on environment localization and the directional form-factor concept, is presented in this paper. First, we subdivide the object space into many regions. Objects contained in each region are adjacent to each other and pose more global illumination effects to their neighbours. Next, form-factors are calculated in each local environment. The radiant light energy transfer between different regions is evaluated at their common boundaries. Directional form-factors are introduced to simulate the interaction of light between local environments and between nondiffuse surfaces. Comparisons are made to existing algorithms. Statistic results and theoretical analysis show that the new algorithm is much faster than previous ones. The technique is especially fit for interactive design and animation sequence generation since modification to the shape or location of objects usually happens in local environments.

Abstract:For dielectric inhomogeneous objects, the perceived reflections are the linear combinations of diffuse and specular reflection components. Specular reflection plays an important role in the fields of image analysis, pattern recognition, and scene synthesis. Several methods for the separation of the diffuse and the specular reflection components have been presented based on image segmentation or local interaction of neighboring pixels. We propose a simple and effective method for specularity removal in a single image on the level of each individual pixel. The chromaticity of diffuse reflection is approximately estimated by employing the concept of modified specular-free image, and the specular component is adjusted according to the criterion of smooth color transition along the boundary of diffuse and specular regions. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is promising when compared with other state-of-the-art techniques, in both separation accuracy and running speed.

Abstract:This paper introduces a kind of new wavelet radiosity method called multiresolution B-spline radiosity, which uses B-splines of different scales to represent radiosity distribution functions. A set of techniques and algorithms, such as function extrapolation, adaptive quadrature, scale adjustment and octree, are proposed to implement it. This method sets up hierarchical structures on surfaces, keeps radiosity distribution continuous at element boundaries, does not need postprocessing, and does not prevent the use of any surface whose parameter domain is rectilinear.

Abstract:A progressive radiosity algorithm based on piecewise polynomial intensity distribution is presented in the paper. Unlike the conventional radiosity method, radiosity across each patch is assumed to vary in a polynomial distribution. A generalized radiosity equation for scenes with non-diffuse surfaces is then set up and solved by adopting the progressive refinement technique. To improve the efficiency of the algorithm, an adaptive Monte Carlo algorithm incorporation with localization technique is employed to evaluate the form-factors from source patches to nodes. Experimental results demonstrate the potential advantage of our method for rendering complex scenes.

Abstract:Most of current infrared image synthesis models mainly base on target's quantum self-radiation, they fait to simulate the infrared specular highlight effect and the infrared attenuation effect through atmosphere. This paper presents a new realistic image synthesis model for infrared scene. Within our model, we consider various kinds of infrared radiation components in infrared scene. By combining the advantage of the illumination models of computer graphics and the characteristics of infrared imaging, infrared specular highlight scene and infrared attenuation effect through atmosphere and other infrared scenes are realistically simulated. The new model is a global image synthesis model suitable both for infrared image synthesis and visible image synthesis. Experimental results of various scenes demonstrate the potential of our model.

Abstract:Glossy to glossy reflections are lights bounced between glossy surfaces. Such directional light transports are important for humans to perceive glossy materials, but difficult to simulate. This paper proposes a new method for rendering screen-space glossy to glossy reflections in realtime. We use spherical von Mises-Fisher (vMF) distributions to model glossy BRDFs at surfaces, and employ screen space directional occlusion (SSDO) rendering framework to trace indirect light transports bounced in the screen space. As our main contributions, we derive a new parameterization of vMF distribution so as to convert the non-linear fit of multiple vMF distributions into a linear sum in the new space. Then, we present a new linear filtering technique to build MIP-maps on glossy BRDFs, which allows us to create filtered radiance transfer functions at runtime, and efficiently estimate indirect glossy to glossy reflections. We demonstrate our method in a realtime application for rendering scenes with dynamic glossy objects. Compared with screen space directional occlusion, our approach only requires one extra texture and has a negligible overhead, 3% approximate to 6% loss at frame rate, but enables glossy to glossy reflections.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient approach to render refracting transmissive objects with multi-scale surface roughness, under distant illumination. To correctly capture both fine-scale surface details and large-scale appearances, and enable real-time processing at various viewing resolutions, we first divide the surface roughness into three levels, namely, micro-scale, meso-scale and macro-scale. Each scale of roughness is modeled and evaluated using different strategies, and the overall roughness is approximated by their spherical convolution. Then, this representation is incorporated into a microfacet-based BTDF model, and multi-scale rough refractions are simulated on both front and back sides of an object as light enters and exits the object. In particular, non-linear filtering methods are applied to both macro-scale geometries and meso-scale bumps to reduce aliasing when viewed across a range of distances. Finally, experimental results illustrate that our approach produces resolution-dependent refraction effects that match super-sampled ground truth, while achieving a speed up of several orders of magnitude with hardware acceleration.

Abstract:We present an algorithm to render objects made of transparent materials with rough surfaces in real-time, under all-frequency distant illumination. Rough surfaces cause wide scattering as light enters and exits objects, which significantly complicates the rendering of such materials. We present two contributions to approximate the successive scattering events at interfaces, due to rough refraction: First, an approximation of the Bidirectional Transmittance Distribution Function (BTDF), using spherical Gaussians, suitable for real-time estimation of environment lighting using preconvolution; second, a combination of cone tracing and macrogeometry filtering to efficiently integrate the scattered rays at the exiting interface of the object. We demonstrate the quality of our approximation by comparison against stochastic ray tracing. Furthermore we propose two extensions to our method for supporting spatially varying roughness on object surfaces and local lighting for thin objects.

Abstract:Raytracing is one of the main method to synthesize the photorealistic image, but the large amount of computation limits its application. The development of virtual reality requires high ability of real-time rendering algorithm. Environment mapping can not generate the reflection and the refraction intensity exactly. This paper proposed a quick raytracing algorithm based on the transformation of environment map. This method adds depth information in the environment map and generates the exact reflection and refraction intensity with the transformation of a few pixels. The rendering time is proportional to the environment map resolution and is independent of the scene complexity.

Abstract:A new approach for evaluating form-factors between B-spline surface patches is presented. While previous radiosity approaches subdivide the environment based on the planar approximations of curved surfaces and invoke conventional algorithms for form-factor evaluation, our new approach capitalizes on the solid angle integration analog of the form-factor equation to arrive at an efficient progressive radiosity algorithm. A dynamic sampling strategy of the source patch with respect to the receiving vertices in the environment is also incorporated. Implementation results show that our algorithm has potential.

Abstract:The illumination of rough refraction is challenging due to the complex integrations of scattered lights from multiple directions. Prefiltered environment map is able to eliminate the comprehensive integrations, but the precomputation stage protects it from being adapted into dynamically varying environmental lighting. We propose a real-time method for rendering rough refraction, supporting dynamically changing lighting, geometries and materials. Environment maps are efficiently compressed by summed area table (SAT), whose construction only costs several milliseconds. Meanwhile, rough refraction effects are approximated by our lobe merging method. Solid results of our approach are demonstrated by comparing with ground truth results generated with a path tracing engine.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a real-time global relighting algorithm. The scene illumination is divided into three parts: direct, indirect and ambient components. After calculating the reflectance of objects from reconstructed geometry and pre-sampled images, indirect and ambient components of each sampled image are fitted with low-order basis functions. To relight the scene under new illumination conditions or viewpoints, the recovered reflectance is applied to the illumination model to get direct lighting, while indirect and ambient ones are obtained from the basis functions. In addition surface details are recovered by the variations of the micro-property and orientations on the surface computed from sampled images. Our results show that this algorithm can reconstruct global illumination with clear shadow and surface detail vividly in real-time.

Abstract:Two shading models that account for, respectively, both diffuse reflection and specular reflection caused by ideal diffuse linear light sources and ideal diffuse polygonal light sources are proposed. In both models, the diffuse reflection component is accurately represented in an analytic form, while the specular reflection component is represented by an integration taking Phong's specular model as the kernel. For linear light sources, a precise recursive formula is derived to calculate the specular reflection component analytically. For polygonal light sources, we adopt Taylor's series to approximate the integration. All the analytic representations of both diffuse and specular terms involve no complex coordinate transformation and the images generated by the shading models are very realistic. Finally, a shadow detection algorithm is presented for the polygonal environment, the precise umbra and penumbra can be produced. Results show great potential of our method.

Abstract:We present a new technique for interactive relighting of dynamic refractive objects with complex material properties. We describe our technique in terms of a rendering pipeline in which each stage runs entirely on the GPU. The rendering pipeline converts surfaces to volumetric data, traces the curved paths of photons as they refract through the volume, and renders arbitrary views of the resulting radiance distribution. Our rendering pipeline is fast enough to permit interactive updates to lighting, materials, geometry, and viewing parameters without any precomputation. Applications of our technique include the visualization of caustics, absorption, and scattering while running physical simulations or while manipulating surfaces in real time.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a real-time method for rendering soft shadows and inter-reflections of dynamic objects under complex illumination. In previous methods, many efforts were taken to acquire occlusion and reflection informations for dynamic scene on the fly, and the result image cannot be generated in real time. In our approach, these informations for each object are pre-computed and stored in well-defined Spherical Radiance Transport Maps (SRTMs). For distant complex illumination such as environment illumination and area light source, we decompose the illumination to several hundred directional lights. In rendering, we search in SRTMs for occlusion info which may cause shadows, and reflection info which may cause inter-reflections. Finally we produce realistic soft shadows and inter-reflections efficiently. Our method is related with but different from previous Pre-computed Radiance Transfer techniques which are only suitable for static scene.
