The Effect of Genetic and Environmental Factors on Somatic Symptoms of Children

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of genetic and environmental factors on somatic symptoms of children. Methods 168 twin pairs aged 6～16 were collected.Parents completed Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist(CBCL) to evaluate the children's somatic symptoms. FACESII-CV and GHQ-12 were rated by their parents to assess family environment. Using the Holzinger formula to calculate the heritability of somatic symptoms. Using SPSS11.5 software to carry out statistic analysis. Results The total heritability of somatic symptoms was 0.86.It was much higher in girls(0.93) than in boys(0.11),and the boys were mainly influenced by shared environment(0.73).In the group 12～16 years old,the heritability is 0.92,and higher than that of group 6～11 years old(0.84).There was correlation between somatic symptoms and the total GHQ scores of their mother(r＝0.163,P＜0.05). Results of logistic regression indicated that somatic symptoms were related to the way of delivery, abnormal delivery and diseases in newborns. Conclusion Somatic symptoms are mainly effected by shared environmental factors in boys,while in other groups they are all mainly effected by genetic factors.
