Abstract:Currently, monitoring system of awareness of the depth of anesthesia has been more and more widely used in clinical practices. The intelligent evaluation algorithm is the key technology of this type of equipment. On the basis of studies about changes of electroencephalography (EEG) features during anesthesia, a discussion about how to select reasonable EEG parameters and classification algorithm to monitor the depth of anesthesia has taken place. A scheme which combines time domain analysis, frequency domain analysis and the variability of EEG and decision tree as classifier and least squares to compute Depth of anesthesia Index (DOAI) is proposed in this paper. Using the EEG of 40 patients who underwent general anesthesia with propofol, and the classification and the score of the EEG annotated by anesthesiologist, we verified this scheme with experiments. Classification and scoring was based on a combination of modified observer assessment of alertness/sedation (MOAA/S), and the changes of EEG parameters of patients during anesthesia. Then we used the BIS index to testify the validation of the DOAI. Results showed that Pearson's correlation coefficient between the DOAI and the BIS over the test set was 0.89. It is demonstrated that the method is feasible and has good accuracy.

Abstract:[Summary] Anesthesia depth monitoring is helpful to control the narcotic dosage , obtaining the least amount of anesthetic drug for best effects .It not only can prevent dangers posed by anesthetic drug overdose and shorten the awakening process , but also avoid intraoperative awareness.Bispectral index (BIS), as a tool of monitoring the anesthesia depth , can monitor the state and change of cerebral cortex functions .It is sensitive in predicting body motion , intraoperative awareness , as well as consciousness loss and recovery.At the same time, BIS can reduce the use of anesthetic drugs .It has become an important means of anesthetic depth monitoring.This article reviewed the application of BIS in dinical anesthesia .
Monitoring Anesthetic Depth Based on Lattice Complexity of Electroencephalogram

Abstract:Based on fine-graining method and two partition methods(permutation partition and average partition), lattice complexity(LC)was used in EEG complexity analysis under anesthesia in this paper.By using the EEG of 40 patients who underwent general anesthesia with propofol,we calculated the Lattice complexity and lempel-ziv(LZ) complexity and compared Pearson's correlation coefficient between LC,LZ and BIS values. Results showed that during anesthesia induction period ,average partition with lattice complexity get better effect. While during anesthesia recovery period,permutation partition with lattice complexity get better result,and the Pearson's correlation coeffi?cient between LC and BIS values was 0.963 6. During the whole anesthesia period,Average partition with lattice com?plexity get better effect,and the the Pearson's correlation coefficient between LC and BIS values was 0.841 6. The fine-graining order take 3 can get good result. All these provide a new method for clinical anesthetic depth monitoring.

Abstract:Since anesthesia applied to clinic, the anesthesia has greatly reduced the pain of patients during operation. Appropriate depth of anesthesia is conducive to patient safety during perioperative period and reducing postoperative complications. There are many ways to determine the depth of anesthesia. Currently, the clinical signs are the basic method to determine the depth of anesthesia, including heart rate, blood pressure, breathing patterns and rhythms, pupillary reflex to light, eye movement and so on. However, these indicators are not easy to quantify, also can not accurately determine the depth of anesthesia because of more complex situations caused by interaction of surgery and anesthesia. In recent years, there were more studies in monitoring depth of anesthesia based on EEG analysis. This article reviews the application of EEG bispectral index and index of auditory evoked potential in monitoring depth of anesthesia.
An integrated information theory index using multichannel EEG for evaluating various states of consciousness under anesthesia

Abstract:Background: The integrated information theory (IIT) of consciousness introduces a measure O to quantify consciousness in a physical system. Directly related to this, general anesthesia aims to induce reversible and safe loss of consciousness (LOC). We sought to propose an electroencephalogram (EEG)-based IIT index OEEG to evaluate various states of consciousness under general anesthesia.Methods: Based on the definition of mutual information, we estimated the OEEG by maximizing the integrated information under various time lags. We used the binning method to cut the nonGaussian EEG data for estimating mutual information. We tested two EEG databases collected from propofol-(n = 20) and sevoflurane-induced (n = 15) anesthesia, and especially, we compared the OEEG of drowsy (n = 7) and responsive participants (n = 13) under propofol anesthesia. We compared the effectiveness of OEEG with the estimated bispectral index (eBIS).Results: In all EEG frequency bands, we observed a negative correlation between OEEG and end-tidal sevoflurane concentration under sevoflurane-induced anesthesia (p < 0.001, BF10 > 6000). Under propofol-induced anesthesia, drowsy participants in moderate sedation (6.96 +/- 0.26(mean +/- SD)) showed decreased alpha-band OEEG compared with baseline (7.40 +/- 0.53, p = 0.016, BF10 = 3.58), no significant difference was observed for responsive participants. Oppositely, the responsive participants in moderate sedation (-5.32 +/- 0.38) showed decreased eBIS compared with baseline (-4.94 +/- 0.40, p = 0.03, BF10 = 2.41).Conclusions: These findings may enable monitors of the anesthetic state that can distinguish consciousness and unconsciousness rather than the changes of anesthetic concentrations. The alpha-band OEEG is promising for deriving the gold standard for depth of anesthesia monitoring.
Comparative Study of Auditory Evoked Potential Vs Bispectral Index for Monitoring the Depth of Anesthesia During Induction and Recovery Periods

Abstract:ObjectiveTo compare auditory evoked potential vs bispectral index for evaluating the depth of anesthesia during induction and recovery periods.MethodThirty ASAⅠ-Ⅱ patients were randomly assigned to group Ⅰ(n=15) and group Ⅱ (midazolam group,n=15).Patients in group Ⅰ received propofol-isoflurane anesthesia.Patients in group Ⅱ were anesthetized by propofol-midazolam-isoflurane.AAI,BIS,HRV and hemodynamic change were recorded during induction and recovery of anesthesia.ResultsThe responsive time of AAI was significantly shorter than that of BIS.OAA/S sedation score was significantly related to BIS and AAI.There was no difference between AAI and BIS during recovery time (alert to call).ConclusionBoth AAI and BIS were capable of evaluating the anesthesia depth during induction and recovery.But AAI responds quicker,tends to monitor on real time.
Quantitative electroencephalographic analysis as a tool for predicting the depth of sedation of sedation induced by propofol, midazolam and ketamine

Abstract:目的评价脑电图双频谱指数(BIS)、95%边缘频率(95%SEF)对异丙酚、咪唑安定或氯胺酮麻醉病人镇静深度监测的准确性.方法择期行胸、腹部手术病人45例,ASAⅠ或Ⅱ级,年龄30～59岁,随机分为3组:异丙酚组(P组)、咪唑安定组(M组)和氯胺酮组(K组),每组15例.P、M、K组分别以8、0.5、4 mg·kg-1·h-1的速率静脉输注药物,每3 min行进行警觉/镇静(OAA/S)评分一次,直到OAA/S评分达1分停止给药.记录每次评分即刻的BIS及95%SEF.分析BIS、95%SEF与OAA/S评分的相关性,计算病人意识消失时BIS50、95%SEF50、相应95%可信区间及BIS、95%SEF预测镇静深度的概率(PK).结果 P、M组BIS、95%SEF与OAA/S评分间具有相关性,K组BIS和95%SEF与OAA/S评分间无相关性.P、M组BIS50分别为65.9、70.7,但是无法计算K组相应的BIS50和95%SEF50.P、M组BIS和95%SEF的PK均高于0.5(P＜0.01),K组BIS和95%SEF的PK与0.5比较差异无统计学意义(P＞0.05);P组BIS及95%SEF的PK均高于M组(P＜0.05);P、M组BIS的PK均高于95%SEF的PK(P＜0.05).结论 BIS和95%SEF可以准确地监测异丙酚的镇静深度,对咪唑安定镇静深度监测的准确性稍差,而对氯胺酮镇静深度无法监测,BIS对麻醉药镇静深度监测的准确性较95%SEF高。

Abstract:Background Assessment of hypnotic depth has been deeply concerned by anesthetists all the time.Bispectral index (BIS) monitoring is now the most widely used approach to quantitively measure the hypnotic component of anesthesia.With its extensive using,the value of BIS monitoring receives better understanding.Objective To review recent advances in clinical application of BIS monitoring.Content Using BIS monitoring to guide anaesthetic administration allows optimization of drug delivery according to the needs of individual patients.This helps to avoid both too light anesthesia which may lead to intraoperative awareness and too deep anaesthesia which may give rise to delayed emergence.These are particularly important for patients with chronic liver disease.Besides,recent studies indicate that BIS-guided anesthesia helps to accelerate cognitive function recovery.BIS monitoring is also found to be useful for patients at high risk of global cerebral ischemia.For these patients,a sudden reduction of BIS value may suggest the occurrence of cerebral hypoperfusion.Furthermore,BIS monitoring may be helpful in estimating prognosis of patients after cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.However,the optimal duration of BIS monitoring and the optimal cutoff point of BIS value for prognostic estimation in these patients are still unclear.Trend Using BIS monitoring helps to avoid intraoperative awareness and too deep anaesthesia,which is correlated with faster recovery of cognitive function.BIS is also found to be very useful in patients with chronic liver disease,recognition of occurance of cerebral hypoperfusion and prognosis of patients after cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Identifying consciousness alterations during intravenous anesthesia with the depth of anesthesia index and bispectral index: a randomized multicenter study

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the validity of the depth of anesthesia index (Ai), based on sample entropy of electroencephalogram, in identifying the status of the consciousness during total intravenous anesthesia. Methods EEG electrode strips for recording Ai and BIS were randomly positioned on the left or right side of each patient′s forehead. Target-controlled infusion of propofol was increased by 0.5 mg/L per minute in a stepwise manner until loss of consciousness (LOC) was achieved. Values of Ai, BIS and estimated effect-site concentration (Ce) of propofol were recorded and analyzed during induction and emergence of general anesthesia. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between consciousness state and values of Ai or BIS. Results One hundred and forty four patients in six medical centers were enrolled and have accomplished this protocol safely. In patients at LOC, the values of Ai and BIS were 61±12 and 62±11, which were respectively reduced by 15.0% and 9.3% one minute after LOC. When patients regained consciousness (ROC), Ai and BIS respectively reached 74±14 and 76±8, and increased by 15.0% and 7.0%, correspondingly, one minute after ROC. The estimated values of Ai and BIS were 48.3 and 52.3 for 95% LOC, and were 55.7 and 63. 1 for 5% ROC. Conclusions At LOC, ROC, estimated 50% LOC and 50% ROC, the values of Ai and BIS were close to each other and they are equivalent for clinical monitoring. When consciousness states altered, changes of Ai were significantly greater than those of BIS. It suggests that Ai is a better parameter to estimate alterations of consciousness state.

Abstract:Accurate monitoring of the depth of anesthesia (DOA) is essential to ensure the safety of the operation. In this study, a new index using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) signal was proposed to assess the relationship between the DOA and cerebral hemodynamic variables. Methods: Four cerebral hemodynamic variables of 15 patients were collected, including left, right, proximal, distal, oxygenated (HbO and deoxygenated (Hb) hemoglobin concentration changes. The Phase-Amplitude coupling (PAC), an adaptation of cross-frequency coupling to reflect the modulation of the amplitude of high-frequency signals by the phase of low-frequency signals, was measured and the modulation index (MI) was obtained to monitor the DOA afterwards. Meanwhile, the BIS value based on electroencephalogram is also measured and compared. Results: Compared with awake period, in anesthesia maintenance period, the PAC was strengthened. The analysis of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed that the MI, especially the MI of rp-HbO 2 , could effectively discriminate these two periods. Additionally, during the whole anesthesia process, the BIS value was statistically consistent with the MI of cerebral hemodynamic variables, and cerebral hemodynamic variables were immune from interference by clinical electric devices. Conclusion: The MI of cerebral hemodynamic variables was appropriate to be used as a new index to monitor the DOA. Significance: This study is of great significance to the development of new modes of anesthesia monitoring and new decoding methods, and is expected to develop a high-performance anesthesia monitoring system.

Comparison Of Permutation Entropy Index And Bispectral Index For Monitoring Effects Of Anesthetic Drugs To Brain Activity

Abstract:This paper focuses on the comparison of the permutation entropy index and the bispectral index for the estimation of depth of anesthesia. First, we improve the permutation entropy index proposed in [1] with an outlier detection method. Then, the correlation between the permutation entropy index and the bispectral index of EEG series is calculated with seven patients' EEG recordings. A critical anesthesia line is quantified to ensure that the permutation entropy index could obtain a similar result with the bispectral index. The significant correlation and high computational efficacy make sure that the permutation entropy index could replace the bispectral index for estimation of depth of anesthesia in the future.
Correlation of Auditory Evoked Potential Index and Bispectral Index with the Depth of Sedation Induced by Fentanyl and Propofol

Abstract:Objective To analyze the correlation of auditory evoked potential index (AAI) and bispectral index (BIS) with the depth of sedation induced by fentanyl and propofol.Methods Forty-five ASAⅠorⅡadult patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery under general anesthesia were included in this study. The patients were randomly divided into 3 groups ( n = 15 each) :Ⅰpropofol group (P group) ;Ⅱpropofol + fentanyl 2μg·kg-1 group (PF2 group) andⅢpropofol + fentanyl 5μg·kg-1(PF5 group) . Baseline AAI, BIS, MAP, HR and SpO2 were measured and recorded before induction of anesthesia. Normal saline 5 ml/fentanyl 2μg·kg-1 or 5μg·kg-1 in 5 ml was injectedⅣover 30-60 seconds. 4 min later propofol was given by TCI system. The initial target plasma concentration was set at 1.0μg·ml-1 and was increased by 0.2μg·ml-1 every 3 min until OAA/S score reached 1 (5 = alert, 1 = does not respond to prodding) . The expected plasma concentration (Cp) and the effect-site concentration (Ce) of propofol, AAI and BIS values were monitored and recorded for different OAA/S scores and their correlation with the sedation induced by propofol-fentanyl was analyzed. Whether the interaction between fentanyl and propofol could be reflected by BIS or AAI was analyzed too. Results During induction of anesthesia with propofol and fentanyl, the AAI and BIS values were decreasing as the sedation was deepening and were correlated significantly with the OAA/S scores. When the patients did not respond to verbal command (OAA/S score = 2), the BIS values were significantly different among the 3 groups but there was no significant difference in AAI values among the 3 groups. Conclusion AAI can reflect the depth of sedation induced by propofol and fentanyl but BIS can not.
[Effects of BIS and AEPindex Monitoring on the Depth of Anesthesia in in Intravenous-Inhalational Anesthesia Anesthesia].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effects of bispectral index(BIS) and auditory evoked potentials index(AEPindex) monitoring on the depth of anesthesia in inhalation of isoflurane and target-controlled infusion(TCI) of propofol, and to observe the changes of BIS and AEPindex.METHODS:Fourty ASA physical status I - II patients undergoing selective abdominal operations were divided into 2 groups randomly: Group I1(the end-tidal isoflurane concentration was 0.6 MAC, n=20) and Group I2(the end-tidal isoflurane concentration was 1.0 MAC, n=20). Anesthesia was induced with proprofol and vecuroninm. After the tracheal intubation, the patients were ventilated with 0.6/1.0 MAC isoflurane in pure oxygen, and after 20 minutes, propofol was administered with TCI according to the different target plasma concentrations from 1.0 g/mL to 3.0 g/mL(increasing 0.5 g/mL each time). The changes of MAP, HR, BIS and AEPindex were recorded simultaneously.RESULTS:There was no close correlation between MAP, HR and the end-tidal isoflurane concentration, target plasma concentration of propofol. The correlation coefficiencies between BIS, AEPindex and the end-tidal isoflurane concentration were -0.757, -0.819 and -0.832, -0.878 (P<0.001), respectively; those between BIS, AEPindex and the target plasma concentration of propofol were -0.932, -0.888 and -0.920, -0.923 (P<0.001). The correlation coefficiencies between BIS, AEPindex and the stimulation of endotracheal intubation were -0.728 and 0.544, respectively; however, there was no close correlation between BIS , AEPindex and the stimulation of skin incision, and exploration.CONCLUSION:BIS and AEPindex are reliable parameters to monitor the depth of anesthesia of isoflurane and propofol combined anesthesia; and in response to the stimulation of tracheal intubation, AEPindex is better than BIS, but BIS and AEPindex can not be used to predict the cardiovascular reaction of skin incision and exploration.
The relationship between the awareness in combined epidural-general anesthesia and the bispectral index，spectral edge frequence of electroencephalogram

Abstract:Objective To study the relationship between the awareness incombined epidural-general anesthesia and the bispectral index，spectral edge frequency of electroencephalogram．Methods 240 liver cancer patients were randomly divided into propofol （group P，n＝120）and thiopentone （group T，n＝120） groups．In group P，anesthesia was induced with propofol 1.5mg／kg and maintained with propofol 12mg.kg－1.h－1for 15 minutes and 3mg.kg－1.h－1 thereafter．In group T，thiopentone 6mg／kg was used to facilitate the induction and 60％ N2O was inhaled to maintaine the anesthesia．All patients received epidural block during operations．The BIS was continuously monitored with computerized power spectral analysis device．Results There were no differences in BIS between two groups before induction．At 15 and 30 min after intubation， EEG was depressed slightly in both groups．Although BIS and SEF （60min and 120min after intubation）were lower in group P，one awareness happened during operation in P group．Conclusions Monitoring the BIS could not reliably prevent the happening of the awareness during operation in combined epidural-general anesthesia．

Abstract:Depth of anesthesia and patients'consciousness status often be covered or become difficult to judge because of combining usage of muscle relaxants and analgetic agents.Anesthetic depth can not be exactly reflected just only by traditional vital signs such as blood pressure,heart rate,respiration status,pupil size.Recent studies of anesthetic depth monitoring are focused on cerebral electronic activity such as bispectral index(BIS)of electroencephalogram,entropy,auditory evoked potentials(AEP).This article is to review the value of entropy on monitoring depth of anesthesia with comparison to BIS and outline the recent advance in entropy research.
[Monitoring Depth of Anesthesia: a Comparision Between Electroencephalographic Nonlinear Index and Bispectral Index].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To compare the efficiency and accuracy of electroencephalographic nonlinear index (ENI) and bispectral index (BIS) in monitoring depth of anesthesia during general anesthesia.METHODS:Thirty patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery were recruited. The ability of ENI and BIS to distinguish between the anesthetic states (awake, loss of eyelash reflex, loss of response, steady anesthesia, first reaction and extubation) was analyzed with prediction probability (Pk). Correlation between ENI and BIS was tested by nonparametric Spearman rank correlation analysis, with data paired from awake through to extubation. The clinical performances of ENI and BIS were evaluated with success rate, responsiveness, and recovery time.RESULTS:ENI and BIS were better than mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) for distinguishing between the states of anesthesia. ENI correlated strongly with BIS from the stage of awake through to extubation (r = 0.93). No differences were found between ENI and BIS in success rate and responsiveness; but the recovery time was shorter with ENI than with BIS.CONCLUSION:ENI and BIS provide similar information reflecting the states of anesthesia, which allows accurate distinguishment between different states of anesthesia. The clinical performance of ENI is better than that of BIS.
CORRELATION ANALYSIS OF AUDITORY EVOKED POTENTIALS INDEX AND BISPECTRAL INDEX WITH THE DEPTH OF SEDATION INDUCED BY MIDAZOLAM AND PROPOFOL

Abstract:Objective To analyze the correlation of the rapidly extracted auditory potentials index (AAI) and bispectral index (BIS) with the depth of sedation induced by midazolam and propofol. Methods Twenty ASA Ⅰand Ⅱ adult patients undergoing elective gynecological surgery under low-thoracolumbar epidural block were included in this study. Three minutes after the intravenous administration of midazolam 0.02 mg/kg, a bolus dose of propofol (20 mg) was given every 3 min until an observer's assessment of alertness/sedation (OAA/S) scale score of 1 was achieved. AAI and BIS were monitored for different OAA/S scores and their correlation with the sedation induced by midazolam and propofol were analyzed respectively. Results AAI and BIS decreased and increased following the changes in the patients’ OAA/S scores, and correlated with the sedation levels significantly (p<0.001). During the onset phase, the coefficients of Spearman’s rank correlation for AAI and BIS were 0.915 and 0.889 respectively. During the recovery phase, the coefficients were 0.880 and 0.797 respectively. And the coefficients for AAI were significantly greater than those for BIS (p<0.001). Linear regression analysis also showed that both AAI and BIS were linearly related to the OAA/S scores. Conclusion Both AAI and BIS correlated well with the depth of sedation induced by midazolam and propofol under epidural block. AAI may be more valuable when monitoring depth of sedation.
Comparative Evaluation of a New Depth of Anesthesia Index in ConView® System and the Bispectral Index During Total Intravenous Anesthesia: A Multicenter Clinical Trial.

Abstract:The performance of a new monitor for the depth of anesthesia (DOA), the Depth of Anesthesia Index (Ai) based on sample entropy (SampEn), 95% spectral edge frequency (95%SEF), and burst suppression ratio (BSR) was evaluated compared to Bispectral Index (BIS) during total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). 144 patients in six medical centers were enrolled. General anesthesia was induced with stepwise-increased target-controlled infusion (TCI) of propofol until loss of consciousness (LOC). During surgery propofol was titrated according to BIS. Both Ai and BIS were recorded. Primary outcomes: the limits of agreement between Ai and BIS were -17.68 and 16.49, which were, respectively, -30.0% and 28.0% of the mean value of BIS. Secondary outcomes: prediction probability (Pk) of BIS and Ai was 0.943 and 0.935 (p=0.102) during LOC and 0.928 and 0.918 (p=0.037) during recovery of consciousness (ROC). And the values of BIS and Ai were 68.19 and 66.44 at 50%LOC, and 76.65 and 78.60 at 50%ROC. A decrease or an increase of Ai was significantly greater than that of BIS when consciousness changes (during LOC: -9.13±10.20 versus -5.83±9.63, p<0.001; during ROC: 10.88±11.51 versus 5.32±7.53, p<0.001). The conclusion is that Ai has similar characteristic of BIS as a DOA monitor and revealed the advantage of SampEn for indicating conscious level. Abstract:Objective:To study the correlationship of the autoregressive model with exogenous input extracted auditory evoked potentials index (A-line ARX-index, AAI), bispectral index (BIS) with midazolam-induced sedation. Methods: Fourteen ASA Ⅰ-Ⅱ adult patients, undergone elective gynecological surgery under low-thoracolumbar epidural anesthesia were studied. An intravenous bolus dose of midazolam (0. 5mg) was administered every 5 minutes until the score level 1 of the observer's assessment of the alertness/ sedation scale (OAA/S) reached. AAI, BIS were monitored on different OAA/S score levels and their correlation with midazolam-induced sedation was analyzed. Results: During the onset phase. Both AAI and BIS were distinctly reduced as patients' OAA/S scores decreased, and correlated with sedation significantly (the coefficient of Spearman's rank correlation r=0. 973,0. 945,P<0.001). AAI correlated better than BIS (P < 0. 05) with the scores. During the recovery phase, all patients got awake (OAA/S scores 4-5) abruptly, and AAI, BIS increased speedily. Conclusion: Both AAI and BIS can assess midazolam-induced sedation quantitatively and accurately.
Bispectral Index Monitoring Effect on Delirium Occurrence and Nursing Quality Improvement in Post-anesthesia Care Unit Patients Recovering From General Anesthesia: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: The effect of intraoperative anesthesia depth monitoring on delirium occurrence and improvement of nursing quality in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) remains unclear. We aimed to explore the effect of intraoperative anesthesia bispectral index (BIS) monitoring on delirium occurrence and improvement of nursing quality in the PACU for patients recovering from general anesthesia. Methods: This randomized controlled trial included 120 patients, aged 20-80 years, classified as grades I-III according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The BIS-guided group (group B) underwent intraoperative monitoring of BIS anesthesia depth (maintained within the anesthetic range (40-60)). The depth of anesthesia was not monitored in the non-BIS-guided group (group C). The patient's vital signs were recorded at the beginning of the operation (T0), upon entering the PACU (T1), 15 min after extubation (T2), and after leaving the PACU (T3). Delirium score, emergence period (extubation and PACU observation times), and adverse events in the PACU were monitored. The nursing activity score (NAS) was used to evaluate the quality of care. Results: Group B exhibited significantly lower heart rate and mean arterial pressure at T1 and T2, shorter time to extubation and PACU observation time, and a significantly lower incidence of adverse events than group C. Group B had significantly lower Ricker sedation-agitation scores and a lower incidence of delirium than group C. The NAS was significantly lower for group B than for group C. Patients aged 60-80 years in group C experienced agitation, requiring 30% more frequent assistance from one or two nurses than those in group B. Conclusion: Intraoperative BIS monitoring can reduce the incidence of adverse events in the PACU, diminish the incidence of delirium during the recovery period in elderly patients, lessen the nursing workload, improve nursing quality, and promote patient rehabilitation, thus meriting clinical application.
