Abstract:Objective To determine whether the degree of antenatal hydronephrosis (ANH)classified by anteroposterior diameter was associated with postnatal outcome. Methods WANFANG DATA (1988 2010) and VIP INFORMATION (1989-2010) for articles about ANH were searched to screen out studies documented measurements of ANH by ultrasound and postnatal outcome. While the case reports, review articles, and editorial comments were excluded. Results Fifty studies with 2379 subjects met the criteria. The postnatal outcomes were divided into two groups:nondeterioration, and deterioration. The risk of deterioration for different degree of ANH was 0.2% for mild,2.1% for moderate, and 69.1 % for severe (x2 =25.72,P<0.001).The degree of ANH was positively associated with the risk of poor prognosis 7.8% (186/2 379) of all patients underwent surgery. Most of the ANH were mild and moderate. The majority of mild and moderate ANH could be vanished antenatal or in the first year after birth. Conclusions The degree of ANH can predict the prognosis.Mild and moderate antenatal hydronephrosis has a little risk for postnatal deterioration while severe antenatal hydronephrosis has a higher risk. This suggests that any degree of ANH should be followed-up,especially for the severe cases.
