Abstract:Objective To compare the population structure of patients for cataract operation and the incidence of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery between the train hospital and the university hospital. Methods The patients for cataract operation at the Healthlife Express (train hospital) and Department of Ophthalmology (university hospital),People's Hospital,Peking University (DOPHPU) from 2006 to 2011,which both undertook by the ophthalmologists from DOPHPU,were retrospectively reviewed. The population structure of these patients and the incidence of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery between the train hospital and the university hospital were compared. Results From 2006 to 2011,12495 cataract operations at the train hospital and 10862 at the university hospital were performed by the ophthalmologists from DOPHPU.The average age of patients at the train hospital was 68.30±9.48 years, and the percentage of female patients was 60.18%.Those for patients at the university hospital were 66.09±17.76 years and 54.29%.The university hospital had more young patients (0-50 years old) and old patients (over 80 years old). The incidence of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery at the train hospital was 0.0240%.It was not significant different from that of the university hospital (0.0275%,x2=0.027,P =0.869).Conclusions The differences of the population structure of patients for cataract operation between the train hospital and the university hospital indicate the diversities of economic condition and health awareness between the city and countryside in China. With the same surgeons and same perioperative management, the incidences of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery of the train hospital and university hospital are not significant different.
