Abstract:Background: Empirical data suggest that life review is an effective psychospiritual intervention. However, it has not been applied to Chinese patients with advanced cancer, and its effects on this population remain unknown. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of a life review program on quality of life among Chinese patients with advanced cancer. Methods: In this prospective randomized controlled trial, a total of 80 patients were randomly assigned to the life review program group and the control group. The 3-weekly life review program included reviewing a life and formulating a life review booklet. Outcome data were assessed by a collector who was blinded to group assignment before and immediately after the program and at a 3-week follow-up. Results: Significantly better scores in overall quality of life, support, negative emotions, sense of alienation, existential distress, and value of life were found in the life review group immediately after the program and at the 3-week follow-up. Conclusion: This study provides additional data on the potential role of a life review in improving quality of life, particularly psychospiritual well being; it also indicates that the life review program could enable Chinese patients with advanced cancer to express their views on life and death. Implications for practice: The life review program offers advanced cancer patients an opportunity to integrate their whole life experiences and discuss end-of-life issues, which lays the ground for further active intervention in their psychospiritual distress. The program could be integrated into daily home care to enhance the psychospiritual well-being of Chinese patients with advanced cancer.
Effectiveness on Quality of Life and Life Satisfaction for Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Life Review and Reminiscence Therapy Across Settings

Abstract:Background: With the growing trend of ageing, there is an urgent need for effective interventions that enhance positive psychological functions among older adults. Objective: (1) To evaluate the effectiveness of life review and reminiscence therapy in enhancing the quality of life and life satisfaction among older adults. (2) To discover efficacious variables during interventions, such as form of intervention and number of sessions. Methods: Relevant randomized controlled trials in both English and Chinese languages were searched across eight databases. The meta-analysis was conducted by a random effects model using STATA 17. The registration number of this review is CRD42023424085. Results: Thirty-two studies with 2353 participants were included. Experimental groups of older adults significantly improved their quality of life (SMD 1.07; 95% CI 0.48 to 1.66; p < 0.001) and life satisfaction (SMD 1.12; 95% CI 0.63 to 1.60; p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed that individual sessions of life review and reminiscence therapy had a more significant impact on improving quality of life and six to eight intervention sessions could enhance life satisfaction more effectively. Conclusions: Life review and reminiscence therapy hold promise for application in medical and nursing care for older adults, suggesting the potential benefits of implementing intervention designs with effective settings for positive psychological functions.
Life review on psycho-spiritual outcomes among older adults with life-threatening illness: A systematic review

Abstract:Abstract Life review has been widely conducted to help older adults enhance well-being and cope with burdens. Spirituality is an important part of an older adult’s overall well-being, especially for those with life-threatening illnesses. However, there is no review study examining the effectiveness of life review interventions on psycho-spiritual outcomes among this population. The aim of the study was to examine the effectiveness of life review on psycho-spiritual well-being among older adults with life-threatening illnesses. A systematic review with meta-analysis consistent with the recommendations of the Cochrane Collaboration was conducted. Database searches included PubMed, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Library, the Campbell Library, EBSCO, CNKI, and the Airiti Library up to March 2020. Grey literature and reference lists from relevant articles were also searched and reviewed. 34 studies were included in the systematic review and 33 were included in the meta-analysis for outcomes of anxiety, depression, and quality of life. Other psycho-spiritual outcome measures that were not included in the meta-analysis due to the small number of studies included mood, apathy, life satisfaction, meaning in life, spiritual well-being, and some multi-dimensional instruments. The studies greatly varied in program design, content, format, length, interventionist, and more. The meta-analyses demonstrated standardized mean differences in favor of life review compared with the control with small to moderate effect sizes. The reviewers call for including more psycho-spiritual well-being measures among interventions for older adults with life-limiting illnesses, as well as studies with adequate sample size and rigorous designs in future research.

Abstract:Aim The aim of this study was to examine the strength of evidence regarding the effects of life review on psycho‐spiritual well‐being among patients with life‐threatening illness. Background Life‐threatening illness not only causes physical symptoms but also psycho‐spiritual burdens. Life review has been widely implemented to assist people coping with these burdens. However, the effectiveness of life review is not clear. To date, no systematic review or meta‐analysis has been published on this topic. Design and review methods A systematic review with meta‐ analysis consistent with the recommendations of the Cochrane Collaboration was conducted. Data sources Database searches included MEDLINE , Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE , CINAHL , Psyc INFO , CNKI and VIP et al . up to April 2015. We also searched the grey literature, reviewed reference lists from relevant articles and book chapters and contacted experts. Results Nine randomized controlled trials ( RCT s) and two controlled clinical trials ( CCT s) were eligible for this systematic review and meta‐analysis. The risk of bias for those studies were rated as moderate ( n = 11). The meta‐analyses demonstrated significant standardized mean differences or mean differences in favour of life review compared with the control for depression, quality of life and self‐esteem. Conclusion The findings indicate that life review can decrease depressive symptoms, improve quality of life and enhance self‐esteem among patients with life‐threatening illnesses. Multi‐centre studies with adequate sample size and rigorous designs are needed in future research.

Abstract:Life review therapy is a form of psychotherapy framework which involves the guided reflection of life events throughout a patient's life journey. Patients are encouraged to actively recall and analyze important life events, both negative and positive. Through this process, patients may be able to come to terms with, or even resolve negative events such as conflicts and regrets. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of the current knowledge of the use of life review therapy in older adults, and to identify areas for future research. A systematic literature search was conducted across CINAHL, Medline, PsycInfo, Embase and Scopus. Papers were screened and selected using predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria using Covidence and exported into Excel. Data analysis was conducted to synthesise thematic analyses. One hundred and thirty‐one articles from 1974 to 2023 were included in this study and were used to develop four themes: life satisfaction and self‐esteem, depression and depressive symptoms, institutional care and cognitive decline, and post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma. Life review has some benefit in older adults in certain groups and situations, although the extent and duration of effectiveness of this benefit is unclear. Life review unlikely improves self‐esteem. However, in the short term, life review appears to improve life satisfaction, depression or depressive symptoms, and PTSD symptoms in the elderly. Life review may be a useful therapeutic tool for older adults with cognitive decline for as long as the intervention continues. Areas for future research are explored.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the importance of psychosocial interventions' studies on quality of life in cancer survivors because of improving cancer survival rate. This paper was an integrative literatures review of various psychosocial interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy, group-based supportive therapy, counseling or psychotherapy, education or psychoeducation and music therapy et al, and analyzing the complexity of psychosocial interventions' RCTs in oncology and the current characteristic of these studies in China.

Abstract:Purpose Life review interventions aim to support individuals facing an incurable disease accompanied by existential concerns and health-related challenges. Based on encouraging feasibility results, this study assessed the effects of Revie ⊕ life review intervention on the self-esteem of patients with advanced cancer, and the effects on well-being, post-traumatic growth, life satisfaction, symptom burden and interaction with nurses. Method The study consisted of a two-arm parallel-group, waitlist-controlled trial (WCT) in the oncology division of a Swiss-French University Hospital. Revie ⊕ was composed of nurse-led meeting with the patient to address and document significant life events using a strengths-focused approach and targeting the life project. Results Due to Covid-19 pandemic, adjustments were made regarding study duration and participant's allocation: Fifty-eight patients received Revie ⊕, 39 completed all the measurements. Self-esteem was high at baseline and maintained stability over time. The social well-being decreased in the intervention group before-after Revie ⊕ (−1.7 (3.9), p = 0.044) while emotional and functional well-being showed stability. The intensity of symptoms decreased in the intervention group before-after Revie ⊕: 4.9 (9.4), p = 0.020. Conclusions This study suggests that patients living with an advanced cancer and who received Revie ⊕ intervention may have maintained their self-esteem high over time. Observed results are promising, particularly considering the influence of the pandemic. Nevertheless, these findings do not allow us to draw definitive conclusions regarding the efficacy of the intervention on self-esteem. WCT seems not to be the appropriate design to highlight the added value of Revie ⊕ for this particularly vulnerable population. Clinical trial registration number NCT04254926.

Effects of a WeChat-Based Life Review Program for Patients With Digestive System Cancer: 3-Arm Parallel Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background Patients with digestive system cancer often experience psychospiritual distress. Life review is an evidence-based psychological intervention for patients with cancer, but the effects of digital life review programs are unclear, especially for patients with digestive system cancer. Objective We examined the effects of a WeChat-based life review program on the psychospiritual well-being of patients with digestive system cancer. Methods This study was a 3-arm parallel randomized controlled trial. Eligible patients with digestive system cancer were recruited from a university hospital in Fujian, China. They were randomized to a life review group and 2 control groups. All participants received routine care, and the life review group also received the 4-week WeChat-based life review program. Control group 1 also received a 4-week program of friendly visiting. Anxiety, depression, hope, and self-transcendence were measured at baseline and 2 days, 1 month, and 6 months after the intervention. Results A total of 150 participants were randomly allocated to the WeChat-based life review group (n=50), control group 1 (n=50), or control group 2 (n=50). The overall dropout rate was 10% (15/150), and 92% (46/50) of participants in the the life review group completed the intervention. Significant interaction effects for time and group membership were found for anxiety (P<.001), depression (P<.001), hope (P<.001), and self-transcendence (P<.001) at all follow-up time points. For anxiety and depression, the scores did not differ significantly between the life review group and control group 1 on day 2 (P=.80 for anxiety, P=.51 for depression), but the scores were significantly lower in the life review group at month 1 and month 6 (P=.02 for anxiety at both months 1 and 6; P=.003 and P<.001 for depression at months 1 and 6, respectively). Significant increases in hope and self-transcendence were revealed in the life review group compared to control group participants at all follow-up sessions. Conclusions The WeChat-based life review program was effective in reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms and in improving the level of hope and self-transcendence among patients with digestive system cancer. Abstract:Abstract Background Few studies have specifically addressed quality of life issues for elderly hospice patients. The purpose of this study is to explore various factors and service patterns of the quality of life of end-of-life care for the elderly. Methods We collect the data and make small-scale exploratory study via semi-structured individual interviews. Data were collected from the family of 2 elderly cancer patients receiving hospice services, and the data were analyzed qualitatively. Results After investigation, we found that elderly people in hospice care, regardless of age, are suffering from physical and psychological pain and do not want to spend the rest of their lives in the hospital, but want to die in their own homes. Conclusions Both hospitalization and in-home care can improve resource utilization, and the key is to find various factors affecting the quality of life. Improving the quality of life is what patients and their families need most.

Abstract:【Objective】In order to improve the quality of life in advanced stage cancer patient with severe pain and upgrade the hospice service perfectly,we have to discuss the influence of life quality in advanced stage cancer patient of hospice service.【Methods】Application of the assessment of standard of quality of life in cancer patient constituted by China in 1990,seven basic contents will be selected:appetite,sleep,mental status,daily life,social life,family understanding and fitting,attitude of treatment.We choose 100 cases of cancer patient which under hospice service for assessment at the beginning and after 1 month(1:worst,5:best),and compare the assessment.【Results】 There were significance in the assessment of quality of life in cancer patient which under hospice service at the beginning and after one month statistically(P <0.05).【Conclusions】Freely provide the hospice service of analgesic therapy,psychological coaching and education of bioethics and knowledge of hospice care can improve the quality of life of cancer patient with severe pain at certain level,and it is necessary to have further promotion and improvement of hospice sevice.

Abstract:When cancer patients lose their independence and turn to depend on others after illness, their sense of personal value and meaning of life gradually lose, psychological pain increase, depression and anxiety occur, and their will to survive is lost because of despair and sense of burden towards other people. This paper introduces a new type of psychotherapy aiming at improving the sense of life value of cancer survivors, i.e. meaning-centered group psychotherapy. It summarizes the related concepts and theoretical sources, implementation methods and applications, and enlightenment of the application of this therapy in cancer survivors in China, with a view to providing clinical nurses with new nursing methods for cancer survivors.

Abstract:Objective The introduction of psychotherapy in palliative and end-of-life care settings has become increasingly common and is effective in decreasing many psychological problems. This review reports the characteristics and effectiveness of individual psychotherapeutic interventions for patients receiving palliative and end-of-life care. In addition, the review reports the effectiveness of psychotherapies considering the expected life expectancy.Methods The PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for English-language articles published between January 2000 to May 2023.Results Twenty-six studies were included and classified into a total of nine types of psychotherapies, namely, dignity therapy (DT), life review therapy, narrative therapy, managing cancer and living meaningfully (CALM), individual meaning-centered psychotherapy, meaning and purpose therapy, meaning-making therapy, meaning-of-life therapy, and cognitive therapy.Conclusion Most of the psychotherapies provided to patients receiving palliative and end-of-life care showed effectiveness in the reduction of negative emotions and positive factors related to end-of-life issues. Most studies targeted patients with advanced cancer; however, studies on DT did not limit the target group to patients with cancer. Considering the expected life expectancy, CALM was found to be suitable for patients receiving early palliative care.

Abstract:Objective To explore the nursing need and emotional state of patients with advanced cancers,and to adopt nursing intervention which can improve the physical and psychological state of the patients correspondingly.Methods This study used convenience sampling method to investigate the living quality and emotional state of 89 patients with advanced cancers from July.2007 to June.2008.The patients were asked to fill the questionnaires and assessed by POMS and QLQ-C30 after they were admitted to the ward.During the hospitalization,the nursing care was delivered based on the results of questionnaires.Before discharge,they were required to fill POMS and QLQ-C30 again to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing intervention.Results(1)Some mental factor scores such as tension-anxiety,depression-dejection and anger-animus were higher among patients.After nursing intervention,differences were found in the result of emotional assessment of family members(P<0.05).(2)Patients were discharged with good symptom control.But no statistical differences were found in the scores of physical function,role function and social function(P>0.05).Conclusion Nursing care plays an important role in releasing psychological pressure of patients and aiding them go through difficult days before death,but it can not significantly improve the physical status of patients.
Effects of meaning therapy on spirituality, psychological health, and quality of life in patients with cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract:Objective To systematically review studies of meaning therapy on patients with cancer and to evaluate its effectiveness on spiritual outcomes, psychological outcomes, and quality of life (QOL). Methods A comprehensive literature search were performed in five international databases (Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, and CINAHL) and four Chinese databases (CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP, and CBM) from the inception to August 2023. The methodological quality of each included studies was evaluated by using the revised Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized trials. The random effects model or fixed effects model were utilized for effect size analysis, and the standardized mean difference (SMD) or mean difference (MD) along with its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were computed. Meta-analysis was conducted by using the RevMan software 5.4.1. Results Eight randomized controlled trials with 1251 participants were included in this review. Meta-analyses revealed that meaning therapy can significantly improve the spiritual outcomes including meaning in life (SMD = -0.48; 95% CI = -0.89 to -0.07; P = 0.02), hopelessness (SMD = -0.30; 95% CI = -0.51 to -0.09; P = 0.005), self-esteem (MD = -2.74; 95% CI = -4.17 to -1.32; P = 0.0002) and spiritual well-being (MD = -3.32; 95% CI = -5.63 to -1.01; P = 0.005), psychological outcomes including anxiety (MD = -0.66; 95% CI = -1.30 to -0.01; P = 0.05), depression (SMD = -0.37; 95% CI = -0.55 to -0.20; P <0.0001), psychological distress (SMD = -0.35; 95% CI = -0.70 to -0.01; P = 0.04) and desire for hastened death (MD = -0.76; 95% CI = -1.47 to -0.05; P = 0.04), and QOL (SMD = -0.29; 95% CI = -0.50 to -0.09; P = 0.006) in patients with cancer. Conclusions Meaning therapy have positive effects on improving spirituality, psychological health, and QOL of patients with cancer. More high-quality randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes are warranted to confirm the results of our review and to clarify the long-term effects of meaning therapy in the future. From June to September 2021, the Delphi method was used to conduct 2 rounds experts consultations among 15 experts from 8 hospitals, and the items were revised according to the expert′s advice.Results:The experts positive coefficients of the 2 rounds consultations were 83.33% and 100.00%, the expert authority coefficient was 0.88, and the Kendall coefficients of importance were 0.183 and 0.215, and the operational Kendall coefficients were 0.234 and 0.363. Finally, a narrative nursing intervention program for lung cancer patients based on the theory of meaning in life was formed. It included four modules: narrative theme, narrative content, narrative interview outline and homework assignment/auxiliary measures. It was performed 7 times in each chemotherapy cycle.Conclusions:The construction process of narrative nursing intervention program for patients with advanced lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy based on the theory of meaning in life is rigorous, scientific and practical and can be used to guide clinical psychological nursing intervention for patients with advanced diseases and enrich the way to seek the meaning in life of patients
