Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of urine on re-epithelialization of prostatic urethra after prostatectomy. Methods Eighteen male canines were randomly divided into two groups. In experimental group(n =9),all canines received transvesical prostatectomy, ureterocutaneostomy and cystostomy. In control group (n =9),those canines underwent transvesical prostatectomy alone.Three dogs were respectively sacrificed in each group at 1,3 and 4 weeks after the operation. Those wound specimens were harvested for HE staining. Results Re-epithelialization started at 1 week post-operatively in control group. And the proliferation of prostatic epithelium extended to some lumen areas t of the cavity.By contrast, nothing but residue prostatic tissue and squamous metaplasia were observed in experimental group. At three weeks,5 to 6 layers of well-polarized regenerated epithelium covered the wound in control group. And a distinct layer of umbrella cells was observed on the surface. In experimental group, marked proliferation of the epithelial glandular elements, with notable squamous metaplasia, extended to the regenerative epithelium. At four weeks,5 to 6 layers of well-polarized regenerated epithelium completely covered the wound. The prostatic tissue beneath the wound dramatically reduced. On the contrary, regenerated epithelium extended to the prostatic epithelium in experimental group, while we did not observe reepithelialization in multifocal of wound. Conclusion Urine had much potential for accelerating reepithelialization of prostatic urethra after transvesical prostatectomy in canine. However, seeding cells from urine were less likely to be the source of re-epithelialization.
