Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between mandibular deviation and dental arch anomalies. Methods Thirty-one patients with deviated mandible (9 males and 22 females) were included, with mean age of 18 years old (range from 12 to 26 years old). Dental casts were scanned and reconstructed three-dimensionally to analyze crown angulation and arch symmetry. Frontal cephalograms were analyzed to obtain the skeletal characteristics of the patients. Relationship between mandibular deviation and dental arch anomalies was analyzed. Results Patients with deviated mandible had dental arch asymmetry. The shifted side (2. 06 ± 1.05 mm) displayed steeper curve of spee than the contralateral side (1.76+0. 82 mm), (P=0. 038). On the shifted side, upper molars tipped labially and lower molars tipped lingually. On the contralateyal side, upper molars tipped lingually and lower molars tipped labially. Menton deviation was a valid parameter for skeletal and dental asymmetries. Conclusions Patients with mandibular deviation showed specific skeletal and dental characteristics and strong relationship existed between these features.
