Abstract:Objective Schwannomatosis is a recently recognized peripheral nerve system neoplasm,which has different characteristics compared with neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2).The diagnostic and treatmentcriteria of this rarely disorder is discussed.Methods From 2002 to 2007.six patients with schwannomatosis were performed operations in our department.Five of them were females.the other one was male.The mean age was 36.5 years ranging from 22 to 54 years.The lesion was located at radial nerve and saphenous nerve in 1 pafien4 sural nerve and common peroneal nerve in 1 patient both side peroneal nerve in 1 patient.tibial nerve in 1 patient.median nerve and its branches in 2 patients.The lesions of all cases were resected,and at least two neoplasms were proven schwannoma according to the pathological demonstration.Their clinical presentations,imaging characteristics,histological features as well as treatment result were investigated and summarized retrospectively.Results Common symptoms include multiple localized masses,tenderness which can be irradiated to the distal part of the extremity.None of them has caré au hit spots.The MR appearance of schwannomatosis is characterized by multiple discrete,well deftned,round or oval lesions distributed along the course of peripheral nerves in the extremities.They were of low to intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images.The appearance during the operation is similar to the isolated schwannoma.The pathological hallmark is the pattern of alternating Antoni A and Antoni B areas.The vestibular schwannomas was excluded in two cases according to the cranial MRI.The follow-up wag 23 months in average.Four cases obtained a good result without symptoms.One tumor of a female patient wag recurred in palm.Conclusion Schwannomatosis occur in female commonly.with a peak incidence between the third and sixth decades.and characterized by the development of multiple schwarmomas without vestibular tumors diagnostic of NF2.Surgical resection obtain a good result always.
