Abstract:In the past several decades, there were many epidemic evidences showed that coal miners had higher risks of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).In this article we briefly review the clinical studies by classification of four types:studies of comparing lung functions between coal miners and non-coal miners, studies of observing coal miners' respiratory system symptoms and lung functions as compared to their coal dust exposing levels, studies of COPD mortality in coal miners, and studies of exploring the extent of pathological emphysema in autopsy of coal miners in relation to their premortal coal dust exposing. These studies verified the fact that coal dust did have important impact in the pathogenesis of COPD from different views of clinical symptoms, respiratory physiology, disease destination and pathologic anatomy. However, the specific mechanisms in detail still remain further fundamental experiment studies to be clarified.
