Abstract:Objective To discuss the correlation between depressive mood and social capital of cancerous persons,in order to provide theoretical basis for recognizing psychological statuses of patients and relieving their depression. Methods According to cluster sampling method,350 cancerous persons were extracted from the oncology departments and chemoradio-therapy departments of three three Grade Class hospitals in Wuhan, who were investigated with self-design questionnaires and self-rating depression scale (SDS) as well as social capital evaluations. Results The proportion of patients with depressive mood(SDS standard scores ≥ 50)was 75.38%,with male and female accounting 76.47% and 74.42%,respectively.This difference had no statistical significance(P>0.05).The standard scores were higher than others among those patients with lower education level and family income and living on farming.Cancer patients scored (70.4± 13.4) for social capital, with male (71.2± 11.8) and female (69.7 ± 14.7).Differences among patients varied in city and rural areas, education level, occupation and family income were statistically significant (P<0.05).The higher one got in his social capital score, the lower he would gain in depression score (OR=0.958,95% CI =0.936-0.980,P<0.01).Based on controlled demographic factor, the scale of social network was an independent factor influencing depression. In social capital of patients, the bigger social network would result in lower depression (OR=0.829,95% CI =0.741-0.928,P<0.01).Conclusion Social network dimension of social capital may be the main factor that influenced the cancer patients' depression mood.
