Fast Best Neighborhood Matching Algorithm Based on Successive Elimination

Abstract:For decreasing the computational complexity of searching process in best neighborhood matching method, a fast error concealment algorithm using successive elimination was proposed. Based on the existing algorithm, the motion and texture information on the range block was obtained by analyzing the neighboring domain blocks, and the size of searching window was changed adaptively. The successive elimination method was extended to find the best matching domain block in the matching process. By computing the sum absolute difference (SAD) of range block pixels and domain block pixels, successive elimination compared this SAD value with the difference value between the sum of range block pixels and the sum of domain block pixels. The restriction was regarded as decision boundary for the best matching range block, and the redundant matching blocks were eliminated directly. Experimental results show that the fast algorithm reduces the computational cost efficiently compared with the conventional best neighborhood matching method. Better image quality is achieved than that of interpolation algorithms, and the error propagation is avoided.

Abstract:H.264 video coding standard uses motion estimation with multiple block sizes to reduce block-matching errors for higher rate-distortion performance. But the more modes are used, the more computation is needed linearly with the number of allowed block sizes. So a fast block motion estimation algorithm named multilevel successive elimination with half-stopping (MSEHS) is provided in this paper. According to the analysis of statistical characteristics about the best modes, multilevel successive elimination algorithm is described to speed up the searching process for the larger block modes firstly, then using the middle results SAD (sum of absolute difference) and motion vector, a half-stopping principle is defined as a threshold to judge whether it is necessary to continue the motion estimation for the smaller block modes. MSEHS algorithm not only reserves the advantage of multiple block modes in motion estimation but also deletes the redundant computation in the searching process. Experimental results show that the proposed technique provides competitive performance compared with full search algorithm, that is, highly reduced computational complexity, very similar image quality and bitrate.

Abstract:For decreasing the computational complexity of motion estimation in video coding standard H.264 , a fast algorithm with three mode decision principles was proposed. On the basis of the statistical analysis of finally selected encoding mode, the relationship between encoding chosen block and image characters was discussed. The ruler of big block being more easily chosen than small block was derived. By combining sum of absolute difference (SAD) and motion vector in motion estimation, and three mode decision principles were provided. The block mode characteristics were analyzed by the principle of reducing redundant computation in the unnecessary searching block. The direct multiple modes searching process in motion estimation was improved to two steps including mode decision first and then block searching. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide better competitive performance than the full search algorithm, and that the computational cost is reduced efficiently with similar visual quality and bit rate.

Abstract:Integral image as an intermediate image representation can be used to calculate the sum of gray level in rectangle quickly, based on which this paper presents a novel partial matching error function based on sub block mean. The optimal sub block division is a key to the matching error function based on sub block mean and is determined to be 4 under the hierarchical block matching. Experiments show that the matching error function based on sub block mean is superior to both the full matching error function and the matching error function based on sub sampling in terms of the motion estimation quality and speed. The matching error function based on sub block mean with the constant sub block division guarantees the almost same wasting time to the different matching images, which is very suitable for the realtime applications such as video compression.

Abstract:An improved block-matching algorithm for fast motion estimation is proposed. The matching criterion is the sum of absolute difference. The basic idea is to obtain the best estimation of motion vectors by an optimization of the search process which can terminate the time-consuming computation of matching evaluation between the current block and the ineligible candidate block as early as possible and eliminate the search positions as many as possible in the search area. The performance of this algorithm is evaluated by theoretic analysis and compared with the full search algorithm (FSA). The simulation results demonstrate that the computation load of this algorithm is much less than that of FSA, and the motion vectors obtained by this algorithm are identical to those of FSA.

Abstract:In order to make block motion estimation faster and more accurate, a fast, efficient and adaptive block motion estimation algorithm with center-biased pointer-detect mode is described in this paper. Based on the characteristic of center-biased distribution of image sequences' motion vectors and high correlation of adjacent blocks' motion vectors, the algorithm achieves block motion estimation fast and efficiently by adaptively determining search origins, search ranges and search measures of different blocks. At the same time, the motion estimation accuracy is improved when multi-candidate mode is applied to those blocks with large displacements. The simulation results show that the searching speed of our algorithm is close to that of N3SS and N4SS, and the matching accuracy is similar to that of HSS and close to that of FSBM.

Abstract:There are basically three approaches for carrying out fast block motion estimation: (1) fast search by a reduction of motion vector candidates; (2) fast block-matching distortion (BMD) computation; and (3) motion field subsampling. The first approach has been studied more extensively since different ways of reducing motion vector candidates may result in significantly different performance; while the second and third approaches can in general be integrated into the first one so as to further accelerate the estimation process. In this paper, we first formulate the design of good fast estimation algorithms based on motion vector candidate reduction into an optimization problem that involves the checking point pattern (CPP) design via minimizing the distance from the true motion vector to the closest checking point (DCCP). Then, we demonstrate through extensive studies on the statistical behavior of real-world motion vectors that the DCCP minimization can result in fast search algorithms that are very efficient as well as highly robust. To further utilize the spatiotemporal correlation of motion vectors, we develop an adaptive search scheme and a hybrid search idea that involves a fixed CPP and a variable CPP. Simulations are performed to confirm their advantages over conventional fast search algorithms.

Abstract:A matching criterion and its fast algorithm for block-matching motion estimation based on the statistic distribution of DCT AC coefficients is proposed. Experimental results show that the new matching criterion performs better than SAD, especially for frames with luminance change. This criterion is multiplication intensive, but the fast algorithm can reduce multiplication count by about 80%.

Abstract:A new way to reduce candidate blocks for the block matching algorithm is proposed. It consists of three steps: (1) compute the average luminance of all the concerned blocks by a fast iterative algorithm; (2) calculate the absolute error between the average luminance of the currently concerned block and that of the candidate block within the search window in the previous frame; and (3) remove those candidate blocks with large difference. Then the most similar block will be found by searching the remaining candidate blocks. The complexity of reducing the search space is very small, but it can remove candidate blocks from the search window efficiently and effectively. The simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of this new algorithm

Walsh-hadamard Transform (WHT) is employed to search the matched block with low entropy in motion estimation and improves the encoding efficiency. Abstract:In this paper, a novel and efficient criterion for block matching motion estimation is presented. The proposed criterion is to enhance the conventional mean absolute difference (MAD) scheme with a new smoothness constraint on the residue block. The objective is to reduce the bit rate for encoding the residue image without any degradation of the reconstructed image quality. Simulation results show that by applying the new criterion in motion estimation, both the improvement in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the reduction in bit rate up to 4.3% can be achieved compared to MAD.

Abstract:The authors present a new algorithm for fast block motion estimation in video coding applications. In this new algorithm, general characteristics of the block motion field are explored and related to the block motion vector statistics in the search window. As such, they present a way to design the optimal checking point pattern based on minimizing an objective function that is defined to be an average distance measure and such a pattern can be made adaptive to the motion statistics. Then, they suggest a regular checking point pattern which can be regarded as a sub-optimal solution. Simulation results show that motion estimation with the suggested pattern is both fast and robust

Abstract:The diamond search (DS) algorithm is one of the most efficient block matching motion estimation algorithms by far and has already been applied in MPEG2/4. Through our research, we found that there is still some redundancy in the algorithm. In this paper, an improved new difference based search (DBS) algorithm is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the new algorithm outperforms the well-known diamond search (DS) algorithm and four step-searches (4SS). It obtains almost the same Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) while requires less computations than the DS algorithm and 4SS algorithm.

Abstract:The time redundancy in video sequences can be eliminated by motion estimation. Block matching is a popular motion estimation method, adopted by all video codec standards. In this paper, we propose a matching criterion for block-matching motion estimation based on the statistic distribution of DCT AC coefficients. This criterion is insensible to luminance change. Experiments show that VOD can give better image quality than SAD, especially for frames whose luminance changes.

Abstract:In block matching, the matching criterion plays a pivotal role in both matching accuracy and computational complexity. Mean squared error (MSE) is one most widely accepted benchmark for matching accuracy. To avoid multiplication operations for simpler implementation, the sum of absolute difference (SAD) is normally taken as a substitute to approximate MSE. In this paper, we first examine statistically the quantitative deviation of SAD from MSE in terms of maximum and average deviations. To minimize the average deviation, a new measure, namely, weighted sum of absolute difference (WSAD), is proposed in a two-element case first, for which an optimal weight is obtained theoretically. The weight is approximately adapted to 1/2 so that the weighting operation can be simplified to a shift operation, and the resulting multiplication-free WSAD also shows better matching accuracy with a smaller deviation from MSE than SAD. The two-element WSAD is further extended to a multi-element case in a multilevel pyramid structure. The proposed WSAD is experimentally validated by applying it in block motion estimation for video coding, showing better rate-distortion performance than SAD.

Abstract:Block sizes larger than the traditional 16 x 16 macroblock (MB) structure and extended macroblock (EMB) size motion estimation (ME) are introduced in joint model key technology areas software to improve the inter block coding efficiency. Similar to H. 264, variable size motion estimation (VS-ME) is still adopted for each 16 x 16 MB including 16 x 16, 16 x 8, 8 x 16, 8 x 8, 8 x 4, 4 x 8, and 4 x 4. EMB size ME and VS-ME achieve the highest possible coding efficiency, but result in extremely large coding time which obstructs it from practical use. A fast mode decision algorithm for EMBs based on motion homogeneity is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of ME. The basic idea of the proposed method is to utilize the spatial property of motion field in prediction where EMB size ME and small size ME (including 8 x 8, 8 x 4, 4 x 8 and 4 x 4) are needed, and only in these regions EMB size ME and small size ME are enabled. The motion field is generated by the corresponding motion vectors in spatial window. A Novel Fast Block Motion Estimation Algorithm Based on Combined Subsamplings on Pixels and Search Candidates

Abstract:Block motion estimation is one of the key technologies in video compression and has been widely adopted by several existing international standards of video coding. Many popular block motion estimation methods, including three-step search (TSS), new three-step search, and four-step search, have assumed that the error surface is unimodal over the search area or the motion vector is center-biased. However, these assumptions do not hold for most MPEG-1,2 video frames. As a result, schemes with these assumptions will exhibit degraded performance as they are applied to MPEG-1,2 video frames. In this paper, we propose a novel fast block motion estimation scheme based on an integration of pixels subsampling and search candidates subsampling. Compared with the well-known TSS algorithm, the proposed scheme visits more candidates so that it can significantly avoid being trapped into the local minima and therefore is more robust. Experimental results using typical MPEG-1 video frames show that the proposed algorithm can achieve better PSNR as well as higher speed-up ratios than the well-known TSS. In addition, the combined subsampling scheme has a regular structure that facilitates easy hardware implementation.
