Abstract:Objective To evaluate the short term clinical effects of mini-implant assisted maxillary expansion on young adults with transverse maxillary deficiencies. Methods Thirty-eight subjects [15 males,23 females,(22.6 ± 3.5) years old] were treated by mini-implant assisted maxillary expansion.Their CBCT records before and 3 months after expansion were obtained. All measurements were performed with Dolphin Imaging 3D software and the results were statistically analyzed with SPSS.Results The efficiency of skeletal expansion was (63.0±16.3)%,which had no significant correlation with age and the number of screw turns. The nasal cavity, hard palate and inter-molar width increased transversely by (2.8± 1.3)mm、(4.0± 1.3)mm and (7.0± 1.3)mm,respectively.Maxillary first molars tipped buccally by (1.9±3.0)° on the left side and (2.1± 2.9)° on the right side, and the vertical alveolar loss were (0.6±0.7) mm on the left side and (0.7±0.4) mm on the right side. Conclusions Mini-implant assisted maxillary expansion which produces significant skeletal expansion and less unwanted dentoalveolar side effects is an effective treatment to correct transverse maxillary deficiencies for young adults.
