Abstract:The distribution of Mesozoic remainder sequences and the formation of paleostructures were controlled by Late Cretaceous deformational events. Based on the study of the distribution and interfaces of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sequences, we discuss the relation of Lower Cretaceous thinning in the Hongshan depression, the distribution characteristic of Mesozoic remainder thickness in Mahai Rise, and the configuration of paleo-fault zones formed in the Sugan Lake Depression during the Late Cretaceous. We suggest that the northwest-trending structural zone in northern Qaidam Basin was formed during Late Cretaceous deformation and that the characteristic feature of this deformation was differential block uplifting. This Late Cretaceous deformation determined the complicated contact relationships of Cenozoic and Early-Cenozoic sequences.
Late Paleozoic Tectonics of Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt: Evidence from Magmatic Rocks in the Northern Alxa, Northwest China

Abstract:Late Paleozoic magmatic rock outcrops are common in the Northern Alxa, Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which is a key area for understanding tectonic processes and defining the final closure time of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). We present zircon U‒Pb chronology and whole-rock geochemistry data for late Paleozoic magmatic rocks from the Yagan area of northern Alxa. This paper reveals two periods of magmatism: syenogranite (374.8 Ma) and bimodal intrusive rocks, which consist of gabbro (261.4 Ma), diabase (262.9 Ma) and biotite monzogranite (263.4 Ma). The syenogranite is high-K calc-alkaline and shows enrichments in Th, Zr, Hf and LREEs; depletions in Sr, Nb, Ta, and Ti; and low Mg# values (6.9–13.2); the syenogranite was derived from partial melting of the crust and has volcanic arc characteristics. The gabbro and diabase have similar geochemical characteristics, such as enrichments in Pb, Rb, Sr, Zr, and Hf and depletions in Nb, Ta, and Ti, with positive εHf(t) values (+0.9–+2.7 and +2.6–+3.6, respectively), indicating that they originated from partial melting of depleted mantle and experienced crustal contamination during magma emplacement. The biotite monzogranite shows depletions in Nb, Ta, and Ti and εNd(t) values of -2.6 to −2.4 and resulted from partial melting of the lower crust caused by asthenospheric underplating. The bimodal intrusive rocks formed in a postcollision extensional setting. Combined with previous data, we conclude that northern Alxa was an active continental margin during the late Devonian and that the final closure of the Yagan branch ocean of the PAO occurred prior to the middle Permian.
Late Paleoproterozoic Multiple Metamorphic Events in the Quanji Massif: Links with Tarim and North China Cratons and Implications for Assembly of the Columbia Supercontinent

Abstract:The Quanji Massif preserves important records of late Paleoproterozoic metamorphic events that provide insights into the tectonic history of the Tarim Craton and its relation with the North China Craton. Here we investigate amphibolites from two regions in the Quanji Massif. U-Pb ages from metamorphic zircons in the amphibolites, combined with previously published ages from this region, define distinct metamorphic events during Paleoproterozoic. The earlier medium-P/T type upper amphibolite-facies metamorphic event occurred at ca. 1.90-1.96 Ga in a collisional setting. The second event took place with low-PIT type amphibolite-facies metamorphism in an arc setting at ca. 1.82-1.85 Ga, with a subsequent medium-P/T type metamorphism during arc-continental collision at ca. 1.80-1.82 Ga. Our data reveal for the first time that the late Paleoproterozoic metamorphic events in the Quanji Massif are closely comparable with those documented from the Khondalite Belt within the Inner Mongolia Suture Zone and the Trans-North China Orogen in the North China Craton. We therefore propose that the Quanji Massif and Tarim Craton probably shared similar tectonic histories with those of the North China Craton in the late Paleoproterozoic, coinciding with the global assembly of the Columbia supercontinent. A record of Late Cretaceous to early Paleogene Insular terrane accretion within the northern Cordillera: Insights from monazite petrochronology across the Kluane Schist, southwest Yukon, Canada

Abstract:The Kluane Schist is a metamorphosed package of siliciclastic and lesser calcareous rocks that lies between the inboard pericratonic Intermontane terranes and outboard Insular terranes of the North American Cordillera within Yukon, Canada. The metamorphic sequence of the Kluane Schist preserves a record of the tectono-thermal evolution and timing of Insular terrane accretion. Here we document the timing of metamorphism and deformation across the Kluane Schist using in situ laser ablation−inductively coupled plasma−mass spectrometry U-Th-Pb monazite petrochronology. Monazite-bearing samples collected across an inverted metamorphic sequence preserved in the northern regions of the Kluane Schist yield dates ranging from ca. 70 Ma to 55 Ma. Complementary phase equilibria modeling and thin section analysis indicate monazite grew between ∼450 °C and 3.0−3.5 kbar to ∼700−715 °C and 4.0−4.5 kbar, coeval with the development of the Kluane Schist’s inverted metamorphic sequence. Dating the four chemical zones preserved by monazite demonstrates its protracted growth during three distinct periods of garnet crystallization and breakdown, as well as coeval with melt generation. Our data illustrate that peak metamorphic conditions were reached at progressively younger ages with decreasing structural level within the Kluane Schist. Our results are consistent with Buchan-style metamorphism associated with the terminal accretion of the outboard Insular terranes and southwest-directed overriding of the inboard Yukon-Tanana terrane from ca. 70 Ma to 55 Ma. These findings are further congruous with a Late Cretaceous timing for the terminal accretion of the Insular terranes within southwest Yukon, facilitated by east-dipping subduction beneath a westward migrating North American continent.

Abstract:The Neoarchean Cross Lake-Pipestone Lake terrain, northwestern Superior Province, consists of the Cross Lake greenstone belt, the Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex, and multiple generations of granitoids. The Cross Lake greenstone belt includes an assemblage of basalt, picrite, gabbro, and sedimentary rocks (Pipestone Lake Group) that formed between 2790 Ma and 2760 Ma, and an assemblage of polymictic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone (Cross Lake Group) that were deposited between 2704 Ma and 2691 Ma. The Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex is composed of gabbro, megacrystic anorthosite and leucogabbro, and mafic dykes. The Pipestone Lake Group and the Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex are intruded by ca 2760 Ma and younger granitoids. The trace element systematics of the granitoids suggest that they originated in a volcanic-arc to syn-collisional tectonic setting, whereas the trace element signatures of the basalt, picrite, gabbro, anorthosite and leucogabbro association are consistent with a back-arc setting. Whole-rock initial εNd values, zircon initial εHf values and 207Pb/206Pb zircon ages for the granitoids and the anorthosite complex are consistent with long-term depleted mantle sources and variable degrees of crustal contamination during their interaction with Mesoarchean to Paleoarchean continental crust. Zircon trace element data indicate that the granodiorite and the anorthosite complex formed in a continental crust to oceanic crust transition zone at an arc-related setting. On the basis of the field relationships, and trace element and isotopic data, we suggest that the Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex and the spatially and temporally associated Pipestone Lake Group formed in a continental back-arc setting. During and after the closure of the back-arc basin, both the Pipestone Lake Group and the anorthosite complex were intruded by arc-derived granitoids. Accordingly, we interpret the association of the Pipestone Lake Group and Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex as a Neoarchean suture zone. Following the collision and closure of the back-arc basin, the region was dissected by strike-slip faults resulting in the formation of pull-apart basins and deposition of the Cross Lake Group as Timiskaming-type sedimentary rocks.
Petrology and lithogeochemistry of Paleozoic alkalic magmatism in the Selwyn Basin, Yukon, Canada

Abstract:Alkalic magmatism occurred in the Selwyn Basin, Yukon, Canada throughout the Paleozoic, concurrent with extension during passive margin sedimentation. To examine magmatism associated with this extension, geochemical data were obtained from several locations in the Selwyn Basin (MacMillan Pass, Anvil District, Keno Hill, and the Misty Creek Embayment). Volcanic rocks from the Anvil District and the Misty Creek Embayment are dominated by alkalic basalts with LREE-enriched geochemical signatures whereas metavolcanic and dike samples from Keno Hill comprise subalkaline basalts with E-MORB signatures. The Early Ordovician Menzie Creek volcanic rocks of the Anvil District display trace element geochemical signatures intermediate between OIB and E-MORB, whereas the Middle-Late Ordovician volcanic rocks from the Misty Creek Embayment have OIB signatures. Differences in the trace element geochemistry of the sample suites are attributed to the degree of partial melting. The Menzie Creek volcanic rocks formed from large volume melts of enriched mantle that diluted incompatible element signatures in the Early Ordovician. Late Ordovician magmatism produced the Misty Creek Embayment samples, where restricted melt volumes of an enriched mantle source resulted in the most enriched samples geochemically. The Keno Hill samples represent the shallowest melting of the analysed samples and may have resulted from melting of heterogenous subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Magmatic zircons from a Keno Hill metavolcanic sample analysed by CA-TIMS resulted in a primary deposition age of c. 296 ± 0.36 Ma (Early Permian), during a period with little magmatism in the Selwyn Basin and representing a previously unknown unit in the area.

Abstract:Zircon xenocrysts from two diamond-barren kimberlite pipes (Leningrad and Ruslovaya) in the West Ukukit kimberlite field opened a ‘window’ to the buried crustal basement in the northern Siberian craton. Zircon U-Pb ages reveal a close affinity of the basement of the Khapchan belt to the Archaean Anabar province and a significant tectonomagmatic reworking in the Paleoproterozoic (~2.1–1.8 Ga) due to collision between the Anabar province and the Olenek province. The West Ukukit kimberlite field experienced multiple tectonomagmatic reactivation from ~670 to 144 Ma, which can be attributed to interaction of the deep crust with mantle-derived melts. Hf isotope composition of zircon xenocrysts reveals significant addition of juvenile material into the crust during the Paleoproterozoic orogeny in diamond-barren kimberlite fields, which is different from the reworking crust in the southern Yakutia diamondiferous kimberlite fields. Eruption of the Leningrad and Ruslovaya pipes were constrained as the Late Jurassic, much later than the well-known Late Silurian-Earth Devonian kimberlites in the West Ukukit kimberlite field. A NE-trending, >2000 km long kimberlite corridor is proposed to account for a prolonged lithospheric channel for episodic eruption of kimberlites in the Siberian craton. The diamond storage in the lithosphere beneath the West Ukukit kimberlite field may have been largely reduced by the Paleoproterozoic orogeny and Phanerozoic reworking.

Abstract:This study presents the first comprehensive dataset of low-temperature thermochronology from 43 bedrock samples collected north of the active Yakutat-North American plate boundary. Our apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He and fission-track data reveal the cooling history of the inboard Wrangellia Composite Terrane that is dominated by rapid cooling after Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous arc magmatism followed by very little cooling and exhumation until today. Deformation resulting in rock exhumation due to the collision of the Yakutat microplate is spatially very limited (20-30 km) and is concentrated mainly in the Chugach-Prince William Terrane and rocks near the Border Ranges Fault. Focused exhumation from greater depths of ca. 10 km with very high rates (>5 km/Myr) is localized at the syntaxis region, starting ca. 10 Ma and shifted south through time. The rapid exhumation rates are explained by the development of strong feedbacks between tectonically driven surface uplift and erosion, which started already before glaciation of the area. The shift in the location towards the south is a consequence of continuous readjusting between tectonics and climate, which is changing on local and global scales since the Late Miocene. Abstract:Canada's northern cratons record a complex poly‐metamorphic evolution in response to multiple orogenic events. The Snowbird Tectonic Zone (STZ), the principal suture between the Archean Rae and Hearne cratons, is a highly debated structure; it is argued to have accommodated modern‐style accretion in either the Neoarchean (2.6–2.5 Ga) or Palaeoproterozoic (ca. 1.9 Ga). To resolve this controversy, we use Lu–Hf garnet geochronology to date an eclogite collected from the East Athabasca mylonite triangle of the STZ. Garnet shows prograde trace‐element zoning, and we obtained an age of 1914.5 ± 3.4 Ma. The age is interpreted to date the timing of collision related to deep burial of crust along the STZ. This strongly supports Palaeoproterozoic terminal collision between the Rae and Hearne cratons, and that to constrain high‐pressure metamorphism during supercontinent assembly, dating eclogite itself is key.

Emplacement ages of diamondiferous kimberlites in the Wafangdian District, North China Craton: New evidence from LA-ICP-MS U-Pb geochronology of andradite-rich garnet

Abstract:This contribution presents new U-Pb geochronological data and attempts to elucidate the complex evolution history of various garnet types identified from two kimberlite pipes in the Wafangdian diamond mining district, southern Liaoning Province. These calcic garnets are dominated by andradite with relatively low proportions of schorlomite, grossular and pyrope. Abundant euhedral to subhedral, highly brecciated andradite phenocrysts hosted by LN30 “carbonatite-like” kimberlite samples yield a lower-intercept age of 459.3 ± 3.4 Ma, which is in excellent agreement with the previously reported phlogopite Ar-Ar (463.9 ± 0.9 Ma) and Rb-Sr ages (461.7 ± 4.8 Ma). Based on their trace element and C-O isotopic compositions of associated groundmass carbonate, we infer that these primary magmatic andradites probably originated from kimberlitic magmas. By comparison, three compositionally and texturally distinct groups of Ti-bearing andradites from LN42 hypabyssal kimberlites separately define three well-fitted regression lines with lower intercept ages at 581 ± 12 Ma, 414.9 ± 9.3 Ma and 292.0 ± 5.7 Ma, respectively. Relict andradite xenocrysts implies that ancient lower crust of the North China Craton (NCC) might have been affected by a significant but less-known tectonothermal event to varying degrees at ∼ 0.6 Ga. By contrast, fresh grains of magmatic Ti-andradites with chemical zoning produce a relatively young age of ∼ 415 Ma, which can still provide minimum age estimates for the most recent pulses of Paleozoic kimberlite magmatism in this study area. Noteworthily, a yet unrecognized local-scale hydrothermal alteration event at ∼ 292 Ma has been recorded in the texturally distinct population of secondary hydroandradites, whose age reported here for the first time is geologically meaningful. To sum up, this study further highlights andradite U-Pb dating as a potential robust geochronometer for constraining the late-stage evolution of kimberlite magmas as well as post emplacement hydrothermal alteration.

Abstract:The Paleoproterozoic is a pivotal time for understanding the geochronological framework of the Tarim Craton. Located at the southeastern margin of the Tarim Craton, the northern Altyn Tagh is the main region of exposed Paleoproterozoic magmatic and metamorphic rocks. These rocks are diverse, diachronous, and modified by multiphase tectonothermal events. In this study, we performed systematic analyses on the amphibolite, felsic gneisses, and metasedimentary rocks in the Aketashitage area, southeastern Tarim Craton, including petrography, mineral chemistry, and whole-rock geochemistry, as well as in-situ zircon U-Pb ages and Hf isotopes, to examine the Paleoproterozoic magmatic-metamorphic events in the northern Altyn Tagh. Results from our study indicate that geochemically, the amphibolite and felsic gneisses in the Aketashitage area resemble the typical bimodal associations of mafic and acidic volcanic rocks. In addition, felsic gneisses are characterized by high Sr and low Y contents, high Sr/Y and (La/Yb) N ratios, and indistinctive Eu anomalies, closely resembling high-SiO2 adakites derived from subducted basaltic slab-melt. The palimpsest textures and geochemical features of the Aketashitage metasedimentary rocks suggest that their protoliths are argillaceous rocks. The amphibolite from the study area has a metamorphic age of 1.96 Ga, and the felsic gneisses yield crystallization ages of 2.54-2.52 Ga. The major age peaks of metasedimentary rocks in the Aketashitage area, namely 2.72 Ga, 2.05 Ga, and 1.97 Ga, are remarkably consistent with the magmatic and/or metamorphic events in the same area. Furthermore, the minimum age peak of the studied metasedimentary rocks suggests a depositional age no earlier than 1.97 Ga. Geochemical and geochronological evidence from the exposed rock associations in the Aketashitage area suggest a subduction-related tectonic setting during the Paleoproterozoic. Our new data combined with the findings of previous studies indicate that Paleoproterozoic magmatism and metamorphism in the northern Altyn Tagh area are nearly synchronous, and that both are likely related to oceanic subduction.

Abstract:Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry zircon U–Pb dating and geochemical data document the Early Devonian Sandaogou alkaline complex (409 Ma) from the northern margin of the North China craton. The rock suite includes pyroxene syenite, quartz syenite and monzonite. These rocks exhibit high contents of K2O (5–13 wt%), strong enrichments in large ion lithophile elements and light REE, slightly negative Eu anomalies, and pronounced depletions in high field strength elements. They are characterized by moderate Sr/Sri ratios of 0.7052–0.7071, low Nd(t) values of 12.7 to 17.9 and zircon Hf (t) values from 27.8 to 32.3. These geochemical features and quantitative isotopic modelling suggest that they might have been formed through simultaneous fractional crystallization and lower crustal assimilation of a metasomatized mantle-derived alkali basaltic magma. These trachytic rocks, together with the Middle Devonian alkaline rocks and mafic–ultramafic complex from neighbouring regions, constitute a linear post-collisional magmatic belt along the northern North China craton, possibly formed under a tectonic regime of slab breakoff. They serve not only as a magmatic milestone for marking the termination of Early Palaeozoic orogenic cycle around the northern North China craton, but also as a spatial tracer for locating the position of the potential ancient slab breakoff at the surface. Alkaline plutonic rocks form volumetrically minor but genetically important intrusive components in most orogenic belts of various ages around the world. They are characteristic of either anorogenic, within-plate environments, such as the Etendeka igneous province of Namibia (Harris et al. 1999) and the East Greenland portion of the Palaeogene North Atlantic Igneous Province (Riishuus et al. 2005, 2008), or post-collisional or orogenic settings, such as the Permian–Triassic Western Mediterranean province (Bonin et al. 1987), the Pan-African Arabian Shield (Harris 1985), and the Tibet (Turner et al. 1996; Williams et al. 2004) and Sulu orogens (e.g. Yang et al. 2005). Given their association with extensional tectonic settings (e.g. Whalen et al. 1987; Eby 1990; Zhao et al. 1995), the recognition of syenitic rocks in ancient orogenic belts can provide a diagnostic tracer of the geodynamic environment, and thus provide significant information on post-collisional or intraplate extensional processes within the continental lithosphere (Turner et al. 1996; Yang et al. 2008). The North China (or Sino-Korean) craton is one of the world’s oldest continental nuclei. It has experienced one of the most complex histories of any geological terrane, which includes the initial formation of continental root in the Archaean–Palaeoproterozoic, an intervening quiescent stage, and a decratonization stage in the Mesozoic–Cenozoic (Kusky et al. 2007). This decratonization stage distinguishes the North China craton from other global cratons and it has been the focus of recent intensive studies (Wu et al. 2008, and references therein). These studies have documented two major episodes of alkaline magmatism: one in the Triassic (Yan et al. 2000; Mu et al. 2001; Ren et al. 2005; Yang et al. 2005; Peng et al. 2008) and the other in the Early Cretaceous (Zhang et al. 2005; Ying et al. 2007; Yang et al. 2008). These two magmatic phases have played an important role in clarifying Late Triassic post-collisional extension associated with the final closure of the Palaeo-Asian ocean and Early Cretaceous post-orogenic lithospheric extension possibly in response to Mongol–Okhotsk ocean closure. Documentation of multiple orogenic cycles around the northern North China craton has been essential for the continuing reconstruction of Asia. We present new laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U–Pb ages, whole-rock geochemistry and Sr–Nd isotopes, and in situ zircon Hf isotope compositions for the Early Devonian Sandaogou alkaline complex from south Inner Mongolia to constrain the petrogenesis of the rocks and to investigate the tectonic environment in which they evolved, as a contribution to our understanding of the poorly constrained Palaeozoic orogenic cycle around the northern North China craton.

Abstract:The Yukon–Koyukuk Basin is a wide, triangular depression in northern Alaska that initiated as the consequence of the collision between an intraoceanic arc and the Arctic Alaska margin. It is bordered by the metamorphic terranes of the Seaward Peninsula, the Brooks Range and the Ruby Terrane. The Yukon–Koyukuk Basin is divided into two sub‐basins separated by remnants of the volcanic arc. Two different models have been suggested for its formation. One model interprets the Yukon–Koyukuk Basin to have formed during collision in a forearc–backarc setting, while the other favours an extensional regime that was active after the cessation of collision. To test the two models, ten sedimentary samples from the two stratigraphically lowest units cropping out along the middle reaches of the Koyukuk River were analysed. Point counting and Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy (QEMSCAN®) are used to evaluate sedimentary provenance. This study also presents zircon U–Pb ages from three interbedded tuffaceous layers to better constrain the age of the units. The base of the succession indicates a volcanic source (enriched in clinopyroxene) deposited at ca 138.3 ± 0.8 Ma (2σ), while younger overlying strata are dominated by metamorphic input (enriched in garnet and epidote) reflecting the erosion of the surrounding metamorphic terranes at ca 112.6 ± 1.1 Ma (2σ). The application of a multi‐method provenance approach has been essential in constraining the formation and evolution of the northern Yukon–Koyukuk Basin. This is of significant importance for advancing the understanding of Alaskan geology and for providing insights into modern basins within analogous tectonic settings, such as the Banda Arc in Southeast Asia.

Abstract:The tectonic assembly of the Northern Cordillera is currently disputed and directly impacts Paleozoic-to-recent paleogeographic and plate tectonic reconstructions of North America. In this study, we present new U-Pb zircon geochronology from the allochthonous Yukon-Tanana terrane and the parautochthonous Cassiar terrane of the Northern Cordillera from south-central Yukon, Canada. Our data provide new constraints for the assembly of the Northern Cordillera in this region. Metasedimentary samples from the Ingenika Group (Cassiar terrane) and the Snowcap and Finlayson assemblages (Yukon-Tanana terrane) yielded detrital zircon age spectra that are comparable to known northwest Laurentia age spectra. One of our samples from the Snowcap assemblage yields a detrital zircon age spectrum that is anomalous for northwest Laurentia, but comparable to Early Paleozoic strata deposited in the Nevada-Idaho-Utah region. Zircon rim growth and Pb-loss recorded by detrital zircon in the Snowcap assemblage and Ingenika Group samples record metamorphism at 370 ± 4 Ma and between 171 ± 5 Ma and 135 ± 3 Ma. Late Devonian metamorphism and magmatism possibly corresponds to rifting of the Snowcap assemblage from the Laurentian margin. Middle Jurassic-Early Cretaceous metamorphic zircon rim ages from the Cassiar terrane record metamorphism during collisions between the Intermontane superterrane (including the Yukon-Tanana terrane) and Laurentia (Early to Middle Jurassic), and between the Insular superterrane and Laurentia (Middle to Late Jurassic). Our study suggests that collision between the Yukon-Tanana terrane and the Laurentian margin began no earlier than ∼205 Ma.

Abstract:Cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging and ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Pb dating were carried out for zircons from eclogites in the North Qilian Mountains. The results show weighted mean ages of 463±6 Ma and 468±13 Ma for two samples, respectively. These ages are the earliest record of Caledonian high-pressure metamorphism in the North Qilian Mountains, and they may represent the timing of eclogite-facies metamorphism when the oceanic crust was subducted to mantle depths in this orogenic belt.

Abstract:Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, Ahead of Print. The Laird Lake property, southwest Red Lake greenstone belt, straddles the contact between the Balmer (2.99–2.96 Ga) and the Confederation (2.74–2.73 Ga) assemblages. The property is 10 km along strike from the Madsen and Starrat–Olsen Au mines that are hosted near the contact. The Balmer assemblage consists of fine-grained, aphyric, locally pillowed mafic volcanic rocks, ultramafic intrusive and volcanic rocks with flow breccia textures hosting local spinifex-bearing clasts, and banded-iron formations. In contrast, the Confederation assemblage comprises porphyritic mafic volcanic rocks intercalated with intermediate to felsic volcanic rocks that include crystal lapilli tuffs, crystal tuffs, and tuffs. The Balmer assemblage is composed of tholeiitic mafic volcanic rocks with minor Al-undepleted komatiites, whereas the Confederation assemblage is calc–alkalic. Neodymium isotopes, in conjunction with trace element geochemistry, suggests that parts of the Balmer assemblage were weakly contaminated by an older intermediate basement. Both arc and back-arc volcanism occurs in the Confederation assemblage, with the arc rocks showing a stronger crustal component than the back-arc rocks. A maximum U–Pb age of 2741 ± 19 Ma for a crystal tuff and an age of 2737.68 ± 0.79 Ma for a diorite are consistent with a Confederation assemblage affinity for the intermediate calc–alkaline rocks south of the Au-bearing horizon. The Balmer assemblage represents an oceanic plateau formed by plume magmatism on the margins of the North Caribou Terrane, whereas the Confederation assemblage at Laird Lake formed in an oceanic arc setting where both arc and back-arc volcanism occurred simultaneously.

Abstract:A JXA-8530F field emission electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) equipped with wavelength and energy dispersive spectrometry, together with cathodoluminescence (CL) spectrometer [ 1] has been used to investigate anhydrite-calcite mineral associations from the SWAN Iron ore-Copper-Gold (IOCG) and skarn deposit, Mt Elliot, Queensland (Australia). The studied drill core sample contains late-stage pink felsic dykes overwritten by Na-metasomatism (albite, K-feldspar, magnetite and accessory apatite) and the primary Cu-Au mineralization in a vug filled with coarse-grained anhydrite, calcite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, pyrite in millimeter sizes and accessory fine-grained wollastonite and titanite. The mineralization is considered to have formed at 1520 ±6 Ma based on dating the coarse euhedral allanite (Ca,REE) 2 (Fe,Ti) (Al,Fe) 2 Si 3 O 12 (OH)) overgrown with chalcopyrite. Allanite ages are in good agreement of the accepted age for the Mt. Elliott deposit and neighboring igneous intrusions [ 2]. REE were mobilized and deposited by the same magmatic-hydrothermal fluid that precipitated the Cu-sulfides and the anhydrite resulted from the elevated heat flux from the igneous activity in the region [ 2].

Abstract:The tectonic significance and age of carbonatite intrusions in the central Foreland Belt of the Canadian Cordillera are poorly constrained. Recent work has demonstrated that one of these carbonatite intrusions, the Aley carbonatite, was emplaced as a syn-kinematic sill, coeval with a major nappe-forming tectonic event. Determining the age of the Aley carbonatite thus provides a means of directly dating syn-tectonic magmatism. Attempts at dating carbonatite units failed due to low U–Pb content in sampled zircon; however, a U–Pb titanite age of 365.9 ± 2.1 Ma was obtained from the Ospika pipe, an ultramafic diatreme spatially and genetically related to the carbonatite. This U–Pb titanite age is further supported by respective 40Ar/39Ar phlogopite ages of 359.4 ± 3.4 Ma and 353.3 ± 3.6 Ma for the pipe and a spatially associated lamprophyre dyke. We interpret the Late Devonian U–Pb titanite age of the Ospikapipe to be the minimum possible age of the carbonatite and syn-magmatic nappe-forming tectonic event. The maximum possible age of the carbonatite is constrained by the Early Devonian age of the Road River Group, the youngest strata intruded by carbonatite dykes and involved in the nappe-forming event. Our dating results for the Aley carbonatite closely correlate with U–Pb zircon and perovskite ages obtained for the Ice River carbonatite complex in the central Foreland Belt of the southern Canadian Cordillera, and support the interpretation of carbonatite intrusions of the western Foreland Belt as genetically linked components of an alkaline-carbonatitic magmatic province. Structural, stratigraphic, and geochronological data from the Aley area indicate that deformation was similar in style to, and coeval with, structures attributable to the Antler orogeny, and are consistent with the Antler orogen having extended the length of the Cordilleran margin from the southern United States to Alaska.
Phanerozoic Burial and Erosion History of the Southern Canadian Shield from Apatite (U-Th)/He Thermochronology

Abstract:Patterns of Phanerozoic burial and erosion across the cratonic interior of North America can help constrain the continental hypsometric history and the potential influence of dynamic topography on continental evolution. Large areas of the Canadian Shield currently lack Phanerozoic sedimentary cover, but thermochronology data can help reconstruct the previous extent, thickness, and erosion of Phanerozoic strata that once covered the craton. Here, we report apatite (U-Th)/He (AHe) data for 15 samples of Precambrian basement rocks and 1 sample of Triassic kimberlite from a 1400 km–long east–west transect across the southern Canadian Shield. Single-grain basement AHe dates range from >500 Ma in the west to <250 Ma in the east. AHe dates for the kimberlite in the middle of the transect overlap with the pipe's Triassic eruption age. These data, combined with previous apatite fission-track data, geologic constraints, and thermal history modeling, are used to constrain the first-order regional thermal history that we interpret in the context of continental burial and erosion. Our burial and erosion model is characterized by Paleozoic burial that was greater to the east, unroofing that migrated eastward through Jurassic time, and little to no post-Triassic burial. This pattern suggests dynamic and tectonic forces related to Appalachian convergence, subduction cessation, and later rifting as drivers. The AHe data contribute to efforts to collect thermochronology data across the Canadian Shield to map out continental-scale burial and erosion patterns. The outcomes can be used to refine mantle dynamic models and test how dynamic topography, far-field tectonics, and other effects influence the surface histories of continental interiors.

Abstract:Understanding the pre-collisional paleogeography in the NE Tibetan plateau provides insights into the growth mechanisms of the northern portion of the plateau in the Cenozoic. We conducted sandstone petrography analysis and determined U-Pb ages for detrital zircons from Cretaceous sandstone from the Yumen Basin and the northern Qilian Shan. Cretaceous strata in the northern Yumen Basin yield a unimodal age population at 290-240 Ma that indicates primary derivation from Bei Shan. Cretaceous strata in the westernmost Yumen Basin contain zircons of 2.6-2.2 Ga, 2.1-1.7 Ga, 1.4-0.7 Ga, 440-380 Ma and 300-230 Ma, suggesting source derivation from both the Qilian Shan and Bei Shan. Within the northern Qilian Shan, Cretaceous strata yield age populations of 2.8-2.3 Ga, 2.1-1.2 Ga. 480-380 Ma and ca. 270 Ma, indicating derivation from the Qilian Shan. Sandstone composition results show that a sample from the northern Qilian Shan contains more lithic fragments and plots in the recycled orogen field of the quartz-feldspar-lithics (QFL) diagram, while samples from Yumen Basin are more quartz-rich and plot close to the continental block field of the QFL diagram. This compositional difference corresponds to source variation, consistent with the detrital zircon record. Combined with existing sedimentology and low-temperature thermochronology datasets, we suggest the presence of Cretaceous topographic relief in the Bei Shan and Qilian Shan prior to India-Asia collision. Considering >300 km post-Cretaceous left-lateral offset along the Altyn Tagh Fault (ATE) and the consistently similar detrital zircon ages spectra of the samples from the Cretaceous to late Oligocene strata in the Yumen Basin, we infer the paleogeography in the NE Tibetan plateau has been similar from the late Cretaceous to the late Oligocene with ATF termination in the western Yumen Basin instead of having been linked to strike-slip faults in the Alxa or other regions to the east since its initiation.
