Abstract:Objective To study the effect of co-existing illness on prognosis of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).Methods 1291 patients suffering from SARS in Beijing were retrospectively analyzed. Staistical analysis was made by using SAS 6.0, Mantel-Haenszel χ 2 test. Forward stepwise (wald) CoX regression analysis were used to determine the possible death risk factors. Results In patients with coexisting illness, the mortality was higher than those without(22.3% vs 4.5%). The primary statistical results showed some coexisting illness including cerebrovascular disease, coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and tumor were ssociated with a poor prognosis, with risk degree of 2.30,1.78,1.71,1.25 and 1.21,respectively.In consideration of age and sex,CoX regression analysis showed illness including cerebrovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and hypertension were the independent risk factors for death. The relative risks were 7.548 ,6.921 and 5.083,respectively.Conclusion Co-existing illness can affect prognosis of severe actue respiratory syndrome.Cerebrovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and hypertension are the independent mortality risk factors of SARS.
