Abstract:This paper studies k-nearest-neighbor (kNN) search on R-tree-based structures storing historical information about trajectories. We develop BFPkNN, an efficient best-first based algorithm for handling kNN search with arbitrary values of k, which is I/O optimal, i.e., it performs a single access only to those qualifying nodes that may contain the final result. Furthermore, in order to save memory space consumption and reduce CPU overhead further, several effective pruning heuristics are also proposed. Finally, extensive experiments with synthetic and real datasets show that BFPkNN outperforms its competitor significantly in both efficiency and scalability in all cases.
Efficient Algorithms For Historical Continuous Knn Query Processing Over Moving Object Trajectories

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the problem of efficiently processing historical continuous k-Nearest Neighbor (HCkNN) queries on R-tree-like structures storing historical information about moving object trajectories. The existing approaches for HCkNN queries need high I/O (i.e., number of node accesses) and CPU costs since they follow depthfirst fashion. Motivated by this observation, we present two algorithms, called HCP-kNN and HCT-kNN, which deal with the HCkNN retrieval with respect to the stationary query point and the moving query trajectory, respectively. The core of our solution employs best-first traversal paradigm and enables effective update strategies to maintain the nearest lists. Extensive performance studies with real and synthetic datasets show that the proposed algorithms outperform their competitors significantly in both efficiency and scalability.
Algorithms for Constrained K -Nearest Neighbor Queries over Moving Object Trajectories

Abstract:An important query for spatio-temporal databases is to find nearest trajectories of moving objects. Existing work on this topic focuses on the closest trajectories in the whole data space. In this paper, we introduce and solve constrained k-nearest neighbor (CkNN) queries and historical continuous CkNN (HCCkNN) queries on R-tree-like structures storing historical information about moving object trajectories. Given a trajectory set D, a query object (point or trajectory) q, a temporal extent T, and a constrained region CR, (i) a CkNN query over trajectories retrieves from D within T, the k (≥ 1) trajectories that lie closest to q and intersect (or are enclosed by) CR; and (ii) an HCCkNN query on trajectories retrieves the constrained k nearest neighbors (CkNNs) of q at any time instance of T. We propose a suite of algorithms for processing CkNN queries and HCCkNN queries respectively, with different properties and advantages. In particular, we thoroughly investigate two types of CkNN queries, i.e., CkNNP and CkNNT, which are defined with respect to stationary query points and moving query trajectories, respectively; and two types of HCCkNN queries, namely, HCCkNNP and HCCkNNT, which are continuous counterparts of CkNNP and CkNNT, respectively. Our methods utilize an existing data-partitioning index for trajectory data (i.e., TB-tree) to achieve low I/O and CPU cost. Extensive experiments with both real and synthetic datasets demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms in terms of efficiency and scalability.

Abstract:All-k-Nearest-Neighbor (AkNN) operation is common in several applications, such as geographical information systems, data analysis, computer architecture, and so forth. However, in some real applications, users may consider AkNN search constrained to a specified region. Motivated by this, we introduce the Constrained All-k-Nearest-Neighbor (CA/CNN) query that for every data in query data set A, retrieves its k NNs in data set B and located in the restricted region. In addition, we develop two efficient algorithms to answer CA/CNN search, which utilize a conventional data-partitioning indexing structure (e.g., R-tree) on datasets and employ techniques includes group and plane-sweep to improve the efficiency of the search. Extensive experiments using both real and synthetic datasets demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:The advance of object tracking technologies leads to huge volumes of spatio-temporal data accumulated in the form of location trajectories. Such data bring us new opportunities and challenges in efficient trajectory retrieval. In this paper, we study a new type of query that finds the k Nearest Neighboring Trajectories (k-NNT) with the minimum aggregated distance to a set of query points. Such queries, though have a broad range of applications like trip planning and moving object study, cannot be handled by traditional k-NN query processing techniques that only find the neighboring points of an object. To facilitate scalable, flexible and effective query execution, we propose a k-NN trajectory retrieval algorithm using a candidate-generation-and-verification strategy. The algorithm utilizes a data structure called global heap to retrieve candidate trajectories near each individual query point. Then, at the verification step, it refines these trajectory candidates by a lower-bound computed based on the global heap. The global heap guarantees the candidate's completeness (i.e., all the k-NNTs are included), and reduces the computational overhead of candidate verification. In addition, we propose a qualifier expectation measure that ranks partial-matching candidate trajectories to accelerate query processing in the cases of non-uniform trajectory distributions or outlier query locations. Extensive experiments on both real and synthetic trajectory datasets demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed methods.

Abstract:A visible nearest neighbor (VNN) query returns the k nearest objects that are visible to a query point, which is used to support various applications such as route planning, target monitoring, and antenna placement. However, with the proliferation of wireless communications and advances in positioning technology for mobile equipments, efficiently searching for VNN among moving objects are required. While most previous work on VNN query focused on static objects, in this paper, we treats the objects as moving consecutively when indexing them, and study the visible nearest neighbor query for moving objects (MVNN). Assuming that the objects are represented as trajectories given by linear functions of time, we propose a scheme which indexes the moving objects by time-parameterized R-tree (TPR-tree) and obstacles by R-tree. The paper offers four heuristics for visibility and space pruning. New algorithms, Post-pruning and United-pruning, are developed for efficiently solving MVNN queries with all four heuristics. The effectiveness and efficiency of our solutions are verified by extensive experiments over synthetic datasets on real road network.

Abstract:With the rapid advancements in positioning technologies such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and wireless communications, the tracking of continuously moving objects has become more convenient. However, this development poses new challenges to database technology since maintaining up-to-date information regarding the location of moving objects incurs an enormous amount of updates. Existing indexes can no longer keep up with the high update rate while providing speedy retrieval at the same time. This study aims to improve k nearest neighbor (kNN) query performance while reducing update costs. Our approach is based on an important observation that queries usually occur around certain places or spatial landmarks of interest, called reference points. We propose the Reference-Point-based tree (RP-tree), which is a two-layer index structure that indexes moving objects according to reference points. Experimental results show that the RP-tree achieves significant improvement over the TPR-tree.

Abstract:Given a set of trajectories D, a query object (point or trajectory) q, and a query interval T, a mutual (i.e., symmetric) nearest neighbor (MNN) query over trajectories finds from D within T, the set of trajectories that are among the k1 nearest neighbors (NNs) of q, and meanwhile, have q as one of their k2 NNs. This type of queries considers proximity of q to the trajectories and the proximity of the trajectories to q, which is useful in many applications (e.g., decision making, data mining, pattern recognition, etc.). In this paper, we first formalize MNN query and identify some problem characteristics, and then develop two algorithms to process MNN queries efficiently. In particular, we thoroughly investigate two classes of queries, viz. MNNP and MNNT queries, which are defined w.r.t. stationary query points and moving query trajectories, respectively. Our techniques utilize the advantages of batch processing and reusing technology to reduce the I/O (i.e., number of node/page accesses) and CPU costs significantly. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of our proposed algorithms using both real and synthetic datasets.

Abstract:Intelligent transportation systems, e.g., Uber, have become an important tool for urban transportation. An important problem is k nearest neighbor (kNN) search on moving objects with road-network constraints, which, given moving objects on the road networks and a query, finds k nearest objects to the query location. Existing studies focus on either kNN search on static objects or continuous kNN search with Euclidean-distance constraints. The former cannot support dynamic updates of moving objects while the latter cannot support road networks. Since the objects are dynamically moving on the road networks, there are two main challenges. The first is how to index the moving objects on road networks and the second is how to find the k nearest moving objects. To address these challenges, in this paper we proposes a new index, V-Tree, which has two salient features. Firstly, it is a balanced search tree and can support efficient kNN search. Secondly, it can support dynamical updates of moving objects. To build a V-Tree, we iteratively partition the road network into sub-networks and build a tree structure on top of the sub-networks. Then we associate the moving objects on their nearest vertices in the V-Tree. When the location of an object is updated, we only need to update the tree nodes on the path from the corresponding leaf node to the root. We design a novel kNN search algorithm using V-Tree by pruning large numbers of irrelevant vertices in the road network. Experimental results on real datasets show that our method significantly outperforms baseline approaches by 2-3 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Given a database of trajectories and a set of query locations, location-based trajectory search finds trajectories in the database that are close to all the query locations. Location-based trajectory search has many applications such as providing reference routes for travelers who are planning a trip to multiple places of interest. However, previous studies only consider the spatial aspect of trajectories, which is inadequate for real applications. For example, one may obtain the reference route of a tourist who just passed by a place of interest without paying a visit. We propose the \(k\) Important Connected Trajectories (k-ICT) query by associating trajectories with location importance. For any query location, the result trajectories should contain an important point close to it. We describe an effective method to infer the importance of trajectory points from the temporal information. We also propose efficient R-tree-based and grid-based algorithms to answer \(k\)-ICT queries, and verify the efficiency of our algorithms through extensive experiments on both real and synthetic datasets.

Abstract:Trajectory search has long been an attractive and challenging topic which blooms various interesting applications in spatial-temporal databases. In this work, we study a new problem of searching trajectories by locations, in which context the query is only a small set of locations with or without an order specified, while the target is to find the k Best-Connected Trajectories (k-BCT) from a database such that the k-BCT best connect the designated locations geographically. Different from the conventional trajectory search that looks for similar trajectories w.r.t. shape or other criteria by using a sample query trajectory, we focus on the goodness of connection provided by a trajectory to the specified query locations. This new query can benefit users in many novel applications such as trip planning.

Abstract:Even though the problem of k nearest neighbor (kNN) query is well-studied in serial environment, there is little prior work on parallel kNN search processing in parallel one. In this paper, we present the first Best-First based Parallel kNN (BFPkNN) query algorithm in a multi-disk setting, for efficient handling of kNN retrieval with arbitrary values of k by parallelization. The core of our method is to access more entries from multiple disks simultaneously and enable several effective pruning heuristics to discard non-qualifying entries. Extensive experiments with real and synthetic datasets confirm that BFPkNN significantly outperforms its competitors in both efficiency and scalability.

Abstract:There have been many studies on management of moving objects recently. Most of them try to optimize the performance of predictive window queries. However, not much attention is paid to two other important query types: the predictive range query and the predictive k nearest neighbor query. In this article, we focus on these two types of queries. The novelty of our work mainly lies in the introduction of the Transformed Minkowski Sum, which can be used to determine whether a moving bounding rectangle intersects a moving circular query region. This enables us to use the traditional tree traversal algorithms to perform range and kNN searches. We theoretically show that our algorithms based on the Transformed Minkowski Sum are optimal in terms of the number of tree node accesses. We also experimentally verify the effectiveness of our technique and show that our algorithms outperform alternative approaches.

Abstract:This paper studies a new form of nearest neighbor queries in spatial databases, namely, mutual nearest neighbor (MNN) search. Given a set D of objects and a query object q, an MNN query returns from D, the set of objects that are among the k"1 (=1) nearest neighbors (NNs) of q; meanwhile, have q as one of their k"2 (=1) NNs. Although MNN queries are useful in many applications involving decision making, data mining, and pattern recognition, it cannot be efficiently handled by existing spatial query processing approaches. In this paper, we present the first piece of work for tackling MNN queries efficiently. Our methods utilize a conventional data-partitioning index (e.g., R-tree, etc.) on the dataset, employ the state-of-the-art database techniques including best-first based k nearest neighbor (kNN) retrieval and reverse kNN search with TPL pruning, and make use of the advantages of batch processing and reusing technique. An extensive empirical study, based on experiments performed using both real and synthetic datasets, has been conducted to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed algorithms under various experimental settings.

Abstract:With the ever-increasing number of spatio-textual objects, many applications require to find objects close to a given query point in spatial databases. In this paper, we study the problem of keyword-based k-nearest neighbor search in spatial databases, which, given a query point and a set of keywords, finds k-nearest neighbors of the query point that contain all query keywords. To efficiently answer such queries, we propose a new indexing framework by integrating a spatial component and a textual component, which can efficiently prune search space in terms of both spatial information and textual descriptions. We develop effective index structures and pruning techniques to improve query performance. Experimental results show that our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and investigate a novel spatial query called Reverse Path Nearest Neighbor (R-PNN) search to find the most accessible locations in road networks. Given a trajectory data-set and a list of location candidates specified by users, if a location o is the Path Nearest Neighbor (PNN) of k trajectories, the influence-factor of o is defined as k and the R-PNN query returns the location with the highest influence-factor. The R-PNN query is an extension of the conventional Reverse Nearest Neighbor (RNN) search. It can be found in many important applications such as urban planning, facility allocation, traffic monitoring, etc. To answer the R-PNN query efficiently, an effective trajectory data pre-processing technique is conducted in the first place. We cluster the trajectories into several groups according to their distribution. Based on the grouped trajectory data, a two-phase solution is applied. First, we specify a tight search range over the trajectory and location data-sets. The efficiency study reveals that our approach defines the minimum search area. Second, a series of optimization techniques are adopted to search the exact PNN for trajectories in the candidate set. By combining the PNN query results, we can retrieve the most accessible locations. The complexity analysis shows that our solution is optimal in terms of time cost. The performance of the proposed R-PNN query processing is verified by extensive experiments based on real and synthetic trajectory data in road networks.
Improved K nearest neighbor nonparametric regression and its application in short-term traffic flow forecasting

Abstract:To address the shortage of the K-nearest Neighbor Nonparametric Regression,and to improve the accuracy and computing speed of the proposed algorithm,a method for improving the accuracy and computing speed is presented: choosing state vector based on self-association or association analysis and using an improved variable K searching method based on clustering analysis,simulation experiments are conducted to examine the validity of the method.The calculated results show that this method can produce more exact forecasting performance than the traditional one.
Continuous K Nearest Neighbor Queries over Large Multi-Attribute Trajectories: a Systematic Approach

Abstract:We study multi-attribute trajectories by combining standard trajectories (i.e., a sequence of timestamped locations) and descriptive attributes. A new form of continuous k nearest neighbor queries is proposed by integrating attributes into the evaluation. To enhance the query performance, a hybrid and flexible index is developed to manage both spatio-temporal data and attribute values. The index includes a 3D R-tree and a composite structure which can be popularized to work together with any R-tree based index and Grid-based index. We establish an efficient mechanism to update the index and define a cost model to estimate the I/Os. Query algorithms are proposed, in particular, an efficient method to determine the subtrees containing query attributes. Using synthetic and real datasets, we carry out comprehensive experiments in a prototype database system to evaluate the efficiency, scalability and generality. Our approach gains more than an order of magnitude speedup compared to three alternative approaches by using 1.8 millions of trajectories and hundreds of attribute values. The update performance is evaluated and the cost model is validated.
