The commonly used boundary conditions in geoelectrical and electromagnetic simulations include Direchlet, Neumann and mixed ones. They require the boundaries to be far away from the source and anomalous bodies, resulting too many finite element nodes in the areas we are not interested in. Besides, some of them even affect the system matrices because of the location of sources. To overcome the above difficulties, we attaché infinite elements with the traditional finite element meshes, by which the electric fields were continued to infinity so that the artificial boundary conditions are not needed and the domain for finite element discretization can be reduced. A new type of shape functions for infinite elements is proposed. It keeps the system matrices sparse and symmetric and is also easy to implement. Numerical tests showed that the coupled finite‐infinite element method can lead to accurate results within a relatively small domain, both for three‐dimensional direct current resistivity modeling and controlled source electromagnetic modeling.Permalink: https://doi.org/10.1190/1.3659082FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails International Workshop on Gravity, Electrical & Magnetic Methods and Their Applications, Beijing, China, October 10–13, 2011ISBN (print):978-1-56080-309-6ISSN (online):2159-6832Copyright: 2011 Pages: publication data© 2011 Copyright © 2011 Society of Exploration Geophysicists & Chinese Geophysical SocietyPublisher:Society of Exploration Geophysicists HistoryPublished Online: 17 Nov 2011 CITATION INFORMATION Xiong Li, Yaoguo Li, Xiaohong Meng, Jingtian Tang, Lincheng Zhang, and Jinzhe Gong, (2011), "A coupled finite‐infinite element method for three‐dimensional electromagnetic forward modeling," SEG Global Meeting Abstracts : 41-41. https://doi.org/10.1190/1.3659082 Plain-Language Summary PDF DownloadLoading ...
