Abstract:Objective To investigate the feasibility of erectile function recovery by repairing ablated cavernous nerve (CN) with autologous saphenous vein bridge.Methods Bilateral CN ablated rat models were established,and the severed CNs were repaired by autologous saphenous vein bridge with microsurgical technique.Growth hormone was given every day by abdominal injection.The sham-operated group and CN severed group were taken as the controls.Four months later,apomorphine test was performed on each rat.Retrograde flluoro-gold tracing test was used to examine the recanalization of severed CNs.Results Apomorphine test resulted in 70% erection in the bridged group,which was much higher than that (0%) in the severed group (P 0.01).Much more and brighter positive stained nerve cells were detected in major pelvic ganglions of the bridged group (75.5± 16.3) than in the severed group (15.5± 5.2) 5 days after injection of fluor-gold solution into bilateral corpus cavernosum.Conclusion Autologous vein bridge technique combined with growth hormone injection might lead to recanalization of the severed CN and partial recovery of erectile function.

Repair of Severed Cavernous Nerves by Autologous Saphenous Vein Bridge
