Abstract:We give a complete characterisation of the cubic graphs with no eigenvalues in the open interval $(-1,1)$. There are two infinite families, one due to Guo and Mohar [Linear Algebra Appl. 449:68--75] the other due to Kollár and Sarnak [Communications of the AMS. 1,1--38], and $14$ "sporadic" graphs on at most $32$ vertices. This allows us to show that $(-1,1)$ is a maximal spectral gap set for cubic graphs. Our techniques including examination of various substructure and an application of the classification of generalized line graphs.

Abstract:We show that every cubic graph on $n$ vertices contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree deviates from $\frac{n}{4}$ by at most $\frac{1}{2}$, up to three exceptions. This resolves the conjecture of Alon and Wei (Irregular subgraphs, Combin. Probab. Comput. 32(2) (2023), 269--283) for cubic graphs.

Abstract:A well-known application of the dependent random choice asserts that any $n$-vertex graph $G$ with positive edge density contains a `rich' vertex subset $U$ of size $n^{1-o(1)}$ such that every pair of vertices in $U$ has at least $n^{1-o(1)}$ common neighbors. In 2003, using a beautiful construction on hypercube, Kostochka and Sudakov showed that this is tight: one cannot remove the $o(1)$ terms even if the edge density of $G$ is $1/2$. In this paper, we generalize their result from pairs to tuples. To be precise, we show that given every pair of positive integers $p<q$, there is an $n$-vertex graph $G$ for all sufficiently large $n$ with edge density $p/q$ such that any vertex subset $U$ of size $\Omega(n)$ contains $q$ vertices, any $p+1$ of which have $o(n)$ common neighbors. The edge density $p/q$ is best possible. Our construction uses isoperimetry and concentration of measure on high dimensional complex spheres.

Abstract:Let $i(r,g)$ denote the infimum of the ratio $\frac{\alpha(G)}{|V(G)|}$ over the $r$-regular graphs of girth at least $g$, where $\alpha(G)$ is the independence number of $G$, and let $i(r,\infty) := \lim\limits_{g \to \infty} i(r,g)$. Recently, several new lower bounds of $i(3,\infty)$ were obtained. In particular, Hoppen and Wormald showed in 2015 that $i(3, \infty) \geqslant 0.4375,$ and Csóka improved it to $i(3,\infty) \geqslant 0.44533$ in 2016. Bollobás proved the upper bound $i(3,\infty) < \frac{6}{13}$ in 1981, and McKay improved it to $i(3,\infty) < 0.45537$in 1987. There were no improvements since then. In this paper, we improve the upper bound to $i(3,\infty) \leqslant 0.454.$

Abstract:The boxicity (respectively cubicity) of a graph G is the least integer k such that G can be represented as an intersection graph of axis-parallel k-dimensional boxes (respectively k-dimensional unit cubes) and is denoted by box(G) (respectively cub(G)). It was shown by Adiga and Chandran (2010) that for any graph G, cub(G)≤box(G)⌈log2α(G)⌉, where α(G) is the maximum size of an independent set in G. In this note we show that cub(G)≤2⌈log2χ(G)⌉box(G)+χ(G)⌈log2α(G)⌉, where χ(G) is the chromatic number of G. This result can provide a much better upper bound than that of Adiga and Chandran for graph classes with bounded chromatic number. For example, for bipartite graphs we obtain cub(G)≤2(box(G)+⌈log2α(G)⌉).Moreover, we show that for every positive integer k, there exist graphs with chromatic number k such that for every ϵ>0, the value given by our upper bound is at most (1+ϵ) times their cubicity. Thus, our upper bound is almost tight.

Abstract:For c in [0,1] let P_n(c) denote the set of n-vertex perfect graphs with density c and C_n(c) the set of n-vertex graphs without induced C_5 and with density c. We show that log|P_n(c)|/binom{n}{2}=log|C_n(c)|/binom{n}{2}=h(c)+o(1) with h(c)=1/2 if 1/4<c<3/4 and h(c)=H(|2c-1|)/2 otherwise, where H is the binary entropy function. Further, we use this result to deduce that almost all graphs in C_n(c) have homogenous sets of linear size. This answers a question raised by Loebl, Reed, Scott, Thomason, and Thomassé [Almost all H-free graphs have the Erdős-Hajnal property] in the case of forbidden induced C_5.

A sufficient condition for cubic 3-connected plane bipartite graphs to be hamiltonian

Abstract:Barnette's conjecture asserts that every cubic $3$-connected plane bipartite graph is hamiltonian. Although, in general, the problem is still open, some partial results are known. In particular, let us call a face of a plane graph big (small) if it has at least six edges (it has four edges, respectively). Goodey proved for a $3$-connected bipartite cubic plane graph $P$, that if all big faces in $P$ have exactly six edges, then $P$ is hamiltonian. In this paper we prove that the same is true under the condition that no face in $P$ has more than four big neighbours. We also prove, that if each vertex in $P$ is incident both with a small and a big face, then~$P$ has at least $2^{k}$ different Hamilton cycles, where $k = \left\lceil\frac{|B|-2}{4\Delta(B) - 7}\right\rceil$, $|B|$ is the number of big faces in $P$ and $\Delta(B)$ is the maximum size of faces in $P$. 15 pages

Abstract: The book embedding of a graph $G$ is to place the vertices of $G$ on the spine and draw the edges to the pages so that the edges in the same page do not cross with each other. A book embedding is matching if the vertices in the same page have maximum degree at most 1. The matching book thickness is the minimum number of pages in which a graph can be matching book embedded. A graph $G$ is dispersable if and only if $mbt(G)=\Delta(G)$. In this paper, we prove that bipartite cubic planar graphs are dispersable.

Abstract:Let d_i(G) be the density of the 3-vertex i-edge graph in a graph G, i.e., the probability that three random vertices induce a subgraph with i edges. Let S be the set of all quadruples (d_0,d_1,d_2,d_3) that are arbitrary close to 3-vertex graph densities in arbitrary large graphs. Huang, Linial, Naves, Peled and Sudakov have recently determined the projection of the set S to the (d_0,d_3) plane. We determine the projection of the set S to all the remaining planes.

Abstract:We determine the minimal density of triangles in a tripartite graph with prescribed edge densities. This extends a previous result of Bondy, Shen, Thomassé and Thomassen characterizing those edge densities guaranteeing the existence of a triangle in a tripartite graph. To be precise we show that a suitably weighted copy of the graph formed by deleting a certain 9-cycle from $K_{3,3,3}$ has minimal triangle density among all weighted tripartite graphs with prescribed edge densities.

Bipartizing (Pseudo-)Disk Graphs: Approximation with a Ratio Better than 3

Abstract:In a disk graph, every vertex corresponds to a disk in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and two vertices are connected by an edge whenever the two corresponding disks intersect. Disk graphs form an important class of geometric intersection graphs, which generalizes both planar graphs and unit-disk graphs. We study a fundamental optimization problem in algorithmic graph theory, Bipartization (also known as Odd Cycle Transversal), on the class of disk graphs. The goal of Bipartization is to delete a minimum number of vertices from the input graph such that the resulting graph is bipartite. A folklore (polynomial-time) $3$-approximation algorithm for Bipartization on disk graphs follows from the classical framework of Goemans and Williamson [Combinatorica'98] for cycle-hitting problems. For over two decades, this result has remained the best known approximation for the problem (in fact, even for Bipartization on unit-disk graphs). In this paper, we achieve the first improvement upon this result, by giving a $(3-\alpha)$-approximation algorithm for Bipartization on disk graphs, for some constant $\alpha>0$. Our algorithm directly generalizes to the broader class of pseudo-disk graphs. Furthermore, our algorithm is robust in the sense that it does not require a geometric realization of the input graph to be given.

Abstract:AbstractThe average distance of a simple connected graph is the average of the distances between all pairs of vertices in . We prove that for a connected cubic graph on vertices, , if ; and , if . Furthermore, all extremal graphs attaining the upper bounds are characterized, and they have the maximum possible diameter. The result solves a question of Plesník and proves a conjecture of Knor, Škrekovski, and Tepeh on the average distance of cubic graphs. The proofs use graph transformations and structural graph analysis.

Abstract:Let $C_k$ be a cycle of order $k$, where $k\ge 3$. Let ex$(n, n, n, \{C_{3}, C_{4}\})$ be the maximum number of edges in a balanced $3$-partite graph whose vertex set consists of three parts, each has $n$ vertices that has no subgraph isomorphic to $C_3$ or $C_4$. We construct dense balanced 3-partite graphs without 3-cycles or 4-cycles and show that ex$(n, n, n, \{C_{3}, C_{4}\})\ge (\frac{6\sqrt{2}-8}{(\sqrt{2}-1)^{3/2}}+o(1))n^{3/2}$.
The Density Formula: One Lemma to Bound Them All

Abstract:We introduce the Density Formula for (topological) drawings of graphs in the plane or on the sphere, which relates the number of edges, vertices, crossings, and sizes of cells in the drawing. We demonstrate its capability by providing several applications: we prove tight upper bounds on the edge density of various beyond-planar graph classes, including so-called $k$-planar graphs with $k=1,2$, fan-crossing / fan-planar graphs, $k$-bend RAC-graphs with $k=0,1,2$, quasiplanar graphs, and $k^+$-real face graphs. In some cases ($1$-bend and $2$-bend RAC-graphs and fan-crossing / fan-planar graphs), we thereby obtain the first tight upper bounds on the edge density of the respective graph classes. In other cases, we give new streamlined and significantly shorter proofs for bounds that were already known in the literature. Thanks to the Density Formula, all of our proofs are mostly elementary counting and mostly circumvent the typical intricate case analysis found in earlier proofs. Further, in some cases (simple and non-homotopic quasiplanar graphs), our alternative proofs using the Density Formula lead to the first tight lower bound examples.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph on $n$ vertices, and let $\lambda_1(L(G))\ge \cdots\ge \lambda_{n-1}(L(G))\ge \lambda_n(L(G))=0$ be the eigenvalues of its Laplacian matrix $L(G)$. Brouwer conjectured that for every $1\le k\le n$, $\sum_{i=1}^k \lambda_i(L(G)) \le |E|+\binom{k+1}{2}$. Here, we prove the following weak version of Brouwer's conjecture: For every $1\leq k \leq n$, \[ \sum_{i=1}^k \lambda_i(L(G)) \leq |E|+k^2+15k\log{k}+65k. \] For a graph $G=(V,E)$, we define its partition density $\tilde{\rho}(G)$ as the maximum, over all subgraphs $H$ of $G$, of the ratio between the number of edges of $H$ and the number of vertices in the largest connected component of $H$. Our argument relies on the study of the structure of the graphs $G$ satisfying $\tilde{\rho}(G)< k$. In particular, using a result of Alon, McDiarmid and Reed, we show that every such graph can be decomposed into at most $k+ 15\log{k}+65$ edge-disjoint star forests (that is, forests whose connected components are all isomorphic to stars). In addition, we show that for every graph $G=(V,E)$ and every $1\le k\le |V|$, \[ \sum_{i=1}^k \lambda_i(L(G)) \leq |E|+k\cdot \nu(G) + \left\lfloor\frac{k}{2}\right\rfloor, \] where $\nu(G)$ is the maximum size of a matching in $G$.
