Abstract:Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), also known as recurrent oral ulcers, is a chronic inflammatory oral mucosal disease. Patients with RAS develop spherical or oval ulcerated surfaces on the oral mucosa during the course of the disease, which can cause significant pain and affect patients' daily life. Moreover, the disease tends to recur, and the exact pathogenesis is still unclear. However, current studies suggest that immune dysregulation plays a crucial role in its development. In addition, bacterial or viral-mediated inflammation, local trauma, vitamin deficiency, oxidative stress, and excessive psychosocial stress may also contribute to the etiology of the disease. [ 1–3 ] The prevalence of RAS varies depending on the population studied, ranging from 5% to 25%. In general, young people, women and people of higher socioeconomic status are more likely to develop RAS. [ 4 ] There is no standardized treatment for RAS, and the possibility of complete cure is low. Therefore, the goal of RAS treatment is to relieve pain, shorten the duration of ulcers, and prevent recurrence. [ 5 ] The treatment of this disease is mainly divided into local and systemic therapies. Local treatments include the use of corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic immunomodulators, nonspecific immunomodulators, and antibiotics. Local treatments can improve the clinical symptoms of patients with RAS. Common systemic treatments include glucocorticoids, immunomodulators, hemorheological agents, biological agents, and vitamin preparations. It should be noted that local and systemic treatments can be used in combination. [ 6 ] Recurring episodes of illness can lead to the need for long-term and repeated use of medication, but prolonged use of these drugs can result in certain adverse reactions. For instance, long-term use of glucocorticoids can lead to avascular necrosis of the femoral head, [ 7 ] hypertension [ 8 ] and central obesity, [ 9 ] while long-term use of immunomodulators can cause fetal malformations [ 10 ] and an increased risk of developing malignant tumors. [ 11 ] Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) emphasizes the use of herbal formulas that combine multiple herbs to achieve better therapeutic outcomes than using individual herbs alone. According to TCM theory, multiple herbs can work together synergistically to enhance their therapeutic effects. As a result, herbs have become a popular complementary and alternative therapy in TCM. [ 12 ] Therefore, it would be of great significance if we could find a complementary treatment with superior clinical efficacy and reduced disease recurrence.
