Abstract:In this study, a low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) apparatus with the ability to adjust sample temperatures was used to measure the unfrozen water content of frozen soils sampled from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Based on low-field NMR theory, two cutoff values were proposed to quantitatively identify three types of unfrozen water (bulk, capillary, and bound water) in the frozen soils. The influences of soil properties (the clay content, particle size distribution, and clay mineral content) on these three different types of unfrozen water during the soil freezing process were analyzed. The results showed that the soil-freezing characteristic curve of unfrozen water could be divided into three stages, namely, the unfrozen, the rapid-drop, and the residual stages. In the rapid-drop stage, the unfrozen bound water content increases gradually with the increasing clay or clay mineral content, and at a certain temperature, the unfrozen capillary water content increases as the sand and silt content increases. A published power function model is then used to fit the measured data in this study. We found that the single parameter related to soil properties in this model could not sufficiently reflect the influence of clay mineral content or clay content on unfrozen water content.

Abstract:To understand wintertime controls of biogeochemical processes in high latitude soils it is essential to distinguish between direct temperature effects and the effects of changes in water availability mediated by freezing. Efforts to separate these controls are hampered by a lack of adequate methods to determine the proportion of unfrozen water. In this study we present a high-field 2H2O NMR method for quantifying unfrozen water content in frozen soil. The experimental material consisted of the humic layer of a boreal spruce forest soil mixed with varying proportions of quartz sand and humidified with deuterium-enriched water. The relative standard deviation of unfrozen water content (measured as NMR signal integral) was less than 2% for repeated measurements on a given sample and 3.5% among all samples, based on a total of 16 measurements. As compared to 1H NMR, this 2H NMR method was found to be superior for several reasons: it is less sensitive to field inhomogeneity and paramagnetic impurities, it gives a bigger line shape difference between the ice and liquid signal, it shows a sharper response to water fusion, and it excludes the possibility of hydrogen in the organic material interfering with the measurement.

Abstract:Frozen soil is a complex four-phase porous medium consisting of soil solid/rock, air, unfrozen/liquid water and ice at the subzero temperatures. Freeze-thaw cycles change the magnitude of total soil water content as well as the unfrozen water/ice ratio in frozen soil that affects soil structure and strength, infiltrability/permeability, water availability for microbial activity and chemical reactions, solute concentration and distribution, and thermodynamics. Accurate quantification of unfrozen water content is therefore critical to understand frozen soil hydrological, biogeochemical, thermal and mechanical properties and processes under climate change. Currently a variety of techniques and methods have been applied to obtain unfrozen water content in frozen soils. However, only few studies have attempted to review and synthesize these works. The objective of this study was therefore to review and collate currently available methods determining unfrozen water content in frozen soils. The principles, applications, advantages and limitations of these methods were reviewed and categorized into five categories: a pressure-based method, radioactive-methods, electromagnetic-methods, thermal-methods, and a sound-based method. Models for indirectly estimating unfrozen water content based on empirical temperature relationships, the soil water/moisture retention characteristic, and the vG-Clapeyron model, were also summarized. There is no direct method to estimate ice content but it can be indirectly calculated based on water balance (i.e., difference between total and unfrozen soil water content). The review is closed with a brief review of future needs and perspectives for simultaneous measurement of unfrozen water and ice contents in the laboratory and in the field.

Abstract:The unfrozen water content is crucial to soil's physical and mechanical properties. Soils on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are frequently subjected to freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles. The quantitative relationship between F-T effects and the unfrozen water content of soils requires further investigation. This study employs a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) scanner with a temperature-control module to measure the unfrozen water content of silty clay during multiple F-T cycles. The soil freezing characteristic curves (SFCC) of silty clay are derived from the T 2 (transverse relaxation time) distribution curves based on NMR measurements. Two distinct T 2 cutoff values are used to classify three types of water in soils: bound water, capillary water, and bulk water. The impact of F-T cycles on the evolution of unfrozen water content as temperatures decrease has been analyzed. The testing results indicate that the SFCC of silty clay can be segmented into three stages: super-cooling, fast-declining, and stable. As the number of F-T cycles increases, capillary water content decreases while bulk water content increases during the super-cooling stage. The damage coefficient, derived from pore volume measurements, increases sharply during the first four F-T cycles before stabilizing gradually. Additionally, there is a negative linear correlation between the damage coefficient and the initial capillary water content, and a positive linear correlation with the initial bulk water content. This study offers valuable insights for the quantitative analysis of unfrozen water content in seasonally frozen regions and serves as an essential guide for geotechnical construction projects in cold areas.

Abstract:Frost heave, which is related to the variation in the hydrothermal interaction properties of soil, is the main factor causing the inhomogeneous deformation of structures in cold regions. The relevant requirement for describing frost heave is to obtain the soil freezing characteristic curve, which contains fundamental information for describing the hydrothermal behavior of frozen soil. In this study, the unknown parameters of the van Genuchten equation and the hydraulic conductivity of partially frozen soil were indirectly derived using the pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (P-NMR) technique based on the soil freezing characteristic curve and Clapeyron equation. Based on continuum mechanics, a hydrothermal coupling model combined with the unknown parameters obtained from a P-NMR experiment was applied to quantify the hydrothermal performance of the frozen soil. The mathematical module of COMSOL Multiphysics was employed to solve the coupling equation numerically. To validate the proposed coupling model, water transfer experiments were conducted on silty clay in closed and open systems under freezing conditions in our laboratory. The measured experimental data were consistent with the prediction results, confirming the applicability of the coupling model of the frozen soil in predicting the hydraulic parameters based on the new soil freezing characteristic curve.

Abstract:The deformation of expansive soil in seasonally frozen regions caused by freeze–thaw cycles has severely affected the long-term performance of engineering applications. The alteration of expansive soil microstructure has resulted in many geotechnical engineering failures, such as soil cracking and settlement. Consequently, the micropore contraction and expansion mechanisms of expansive soil have drawn extensive attention. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is widely used as a rapid, non-destructive detection technique for moisture monitoring and microstructure evolution characterization in porous media. In addition, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can visualize the migration pattern of pore water under different numbers of freeze–thaw cycles. SEM is the most effective and direct method to reveal the structure of particle and micropore arrangement. This paper investigates the pore size evolution and pore structure distribution characteristics of saturated expansive soil via 6 freeze–thaw cycle tests using NMR and SEM techniques. The evolution law of saturated expansive soil under freeze–thaw cycles is obtained. The results show that pore water migrates from the center to the periphery under freeze–thaw cycles. The pore size decreases as the number of freeze–thaw cycles increases and small particles increase significantly. During the freeze–thaw cycle, the arrangement pattern changed from surface-surface contact to stacking.

Abstract:The thermal conductivity of frozen soil is a significant parameter in theoretical research and practice pertaining to surface environments and geothermal energy. This paper proposes a three-dimensional random model that improves the accuracy of predicting thermal conductivity in unsaturated frozen soil, thereby reducing the difficulty in determining its thermal parameters. To achieve this, a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyzer was used to determine the proportion of the four phases and the pore distribution of unsaturated frozen soil. A portable thermal property analyzer was also used to measure the thermal conductivity of frozen soil and assess the relationship between unfrozen moisture content and thermal conductivity. Using MATLAB, a three-dimensional stochastic porous medium model of unsaturated frozen soil was developed and then loaded into COMSOL simulation software, after which the pore ratios from the NMR results were inputted, and the steady-state solid heat transfer module automatically calculated the thermal conductivity of the simulation model. The calculated value was compared with experimental data, and the effectiveness and simulation accuracy of the model were analyzed. The study demonstrated that unfrozen water significantly affects the thermal conductivity of frozen soil, and pore water always maintains dynamic equilibrium with ice. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of soils increases with decreasing temperature, increasing moisture content, or increasing unfrozen moisture content. The calculated value of the simulation model and measured value of the test exhibited the same change trend, and the fitting effect was excellent, validating the reliability of the model. Thus, the results of this study provide valuable reference material for future developments related to soil thermodynamics and temperature prediction.

Abstract:Artificial ground freezing is widely used in various projects, such as mine, bridge, and subway tunnel construction and emergency repair, and has achieved good engineering results. The freezing strength and freezing effect based on artificial freezing technology have become a hot research topic. However, the relationship between the freezing strength and unfrozen water content under extremely low-temperature conditions has not been sufficiently studied. In view of this, a series of laboratory experiments were carried out. The unfrozen water characteristics and compressive strength of soil at ultralow temperatures from 0 °C to −80 °C were studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The applicability of a genetic algorithm-back propagation (GA-BP) prediction model to unfrozen water content was discussed. The results show that there is a very small amount of unfrozen water present at −80 °C, with a content of approximately 0.1%. The GA-BP network prediction model can be used to predict the unfrozen water content of soil at very low temperatures. The compressive strength of frozen soils is significantly affected by temperature and unfrozen water content. The compressive strength of frozen soil is directly proportional to the absolute value of the soil temperature. The unfrozen water content and compressive strength follow a power function. As the temperature decreases, the stress–strain relationship of frozen soil is of the elasto-plastic type. Interestingly, soil at temperatures down to −80 °C show significant brittle failure. This paper supplements the basic theory of extremely-low-temperature frozen soil and quantitatively determines that the unfrozen water content affects the frozen soil strength. These conclusions are highly significant and can provide a theoretical reference for practical engineering applications, especially artificial freezing engineering.

Abstract:Based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique, the variation characteristics of unfrozen water content and the occurrence law of unfrozen water in pore structure of silty clay, red clay and remolded mudstone were analyzed by thawing experiments under different temperature gradients. The results show that the thawing process can be divided into negative temperature without phase change temperature rise stage, violent phase change melting stage and positive temperature without phase change temperature rise stage, and there is no superheating phenomenon corresponding to the supercooling phenomenon. The ice in the small pores continued to thaw during the whole test process. The ice stored in the macropores began to thaw in 30mins, and basically thawed in 40mins. The temporal order of pore ice melting is caused by the difference of hydrothermal kinetic potential energy. And the temperature gradient has no significant effect on the sequence of pore ice melting.

Abstract:Understanding the freezing pattern of pore water is the basis for revealing the mechanisms of frost damage in porous rocks. We employed low-field nuclear magnetic resonance method, aided by high-resolution temperature measurements, to investigate the pore water freezing process of in sandstone. Samples were prepared with nine degrees of initial saturation (20% to 100% at 10% intervals). The results indicate the following: 1) pore water in fully-saturated sandstone consists of bound water, capillary water and bulk water. Bound water forms the majority (76%), followed by capillary water (14%) and bulk water (10%). 2) A significant amount of pore water remains unfrozen at -20 degrees C, which is basically bound water. 3) Supercooling of pore water is distinct in samples with saturation degrees >= 70%. 4) The exotherm of rock temperature declines as the saturation degree decreases, it becomes undetectable in samples with saturation degrees (<)70%. Following further investigation of the variation of each fraction of pore water fully-saturatedduring freezing, we suggest that: 1) The entire freezing process can be broadly divided into four stages: supercooling, repid-freezing stage, stable-freezing and ceasing of freezing. 2) Small pores preferentially freeze before larger ones during the rapid-freezing stage. 3) The initial saturation degree significantly influences the pore water freezing process by determining the fraction of pore water. This study sheds new light on the pore water freezing pattern in sandstone, providing novel ideas for the analysis of frost damage mechanisms in porous rocks.

Abstract:The unfrozen water content constitutes a pivotal parameter in freezing soil, significantly impacting its thermal‐mechanical and deformation behavior. This study delves into the alterations in soil attributes as unfrozen water content varies. It examines the influences of impurities, van der Waals forces, and Coulomb forces on the water film, employing the premelting theory as a foundation. A critical state curve quantifying the ratio of the surface charge density to impurity concentration is parameterized for various soil types. Subsequently, combining the theory of effective solution concentration, we have provided calculation methods for the particle surface parameters of pore solutions as ideal and non‐ideal dilute solutions, respectively. This has determined the key variables in the model. Additionally, through the integration of equivalent particle sizes, packing structure, and water film thickness, a calculation model is devised and verified for determining the unfrozen water content and residual water content within in freezing soil. The findings indicate that fluctuation in the unfrozen water content primarily stem from impurities. In soils with equivalent saline content, impurity levels exhibit proportionality to the equivalent particle sizes. The residual unfrozen water is predominantly present within the absorbed water layer.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this study was to enhance the accuracy of predicting the temperature field of frozen soil and to reduce the workload of thermal parameter testing. To achieve this, we employed a three-phase model comprising soil, water, and ice. The unfrozen water content in frozen soil at varying temperatures was determined using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), while the thermal conductivity was measured by a thermal characteristic analyzer. A matlab software-based random model of the frozen soil was then established and imported into COMSOL simulation software. The repeatability and reproducibility of the established model were verified by varying the proportions of pore water and frozen ice to determine the degree of simulation accuracy.The results demonstrated that the unfrozen water content maintained a dynamic equilibrium relationship with temperature, which influenced the thermal conductivity of frozen soil. The simulation results were consistent with those obtained from instrument measurements of trends with respect to temperature. The average PBIAS value between the calculated and measured values was 0.0139, indicating theoretical feasibility. Comparison with experimental data confirmed the effectiveness of our approach, providing a novel concept and a simple method for predicting the temperature field of frozen soil engineering in areas that experience seasonal freezing.

Abstract:The freezing and thawing processes in sandstones under unsaturated conditions are methodically explored via the low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. To precisely monitor the water content and distribution during the freezing and thawing processes, a special Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill (CPMG) pulse sequence is proposed, leading pulse-induced temperature perturbations to be minimized. The results exhibit totally dissimilar water distributions in the two processes even under the same saturation: the freezing process retains more water in large pores, while the thawing process contains less water in large pores. This observation is primarily attributed to the ink-bottle effect occurring during the freezing: large pores with narrow entrances do not freeze until the entrance freezes. In addition, phase transition duration depends on the initial water saturation, for instance, the duration of the thawing process increases from 7 to 12 min as the initial water saturation varies from 40% to 80%. Through NMR observation, this phenomenon is associated with the variation of surface-to-volume ratio: high saturation is associated with the presence of water in large pores; the latter owns a small surface-to-volume ratio and accordingly involves a longer phase transition duration. After the assessment of surface-to-volume ratio, the intrinsic kinetic rate coefficient is further estimated to be 4.6 × 10 –12 mol cm −2 s −1 °C −1 for the ice thawing process in the studied rock. This value is five orders of magnitude lower than that found in the literature for the thawing process in bulk condition, i.e., 7.5 × 10 –7 mol cm −2 s −1 °C −1 . We suggest that the small intrinsic kinetic rate coefficient addressed in the present work could be related to the constrained effect in rocks.

Abstract:Research on the freezing process in soil is crucial for addressing various engineering issues caused by frost heave in cold regions. However, indoor tests are primarily limited to measuring macroscopic unfrozen water content and struggle to elucidate the microscopic interactions among minerals, unfrozen water, and ice. Additionally, the freezing process is generally analogous to drying, yet their differences at the microscale are rarely explored. Therefore, to deepen our understanding of soil freezing behavior and how it diverges from drying, molecular dynamics simulation was utilized to investigate the freezing process on the basal surface of muscovite mica, a common soil mineral. A three-phase composite model comprising mica, water, and ice was constructed and equilibrated at five subfreezing temperatures. Analysis of the number density and radial distribution function of unfrozen water at varying temperatures indicates the existence of three distinct zones: a mineral-dominated zone, a transition zone, and an ice-dominated zone, whose ranges shrink as the temperature drops within a certain range. Moreover, as the temperature decreases, water molecules near the mica surface are arranged more orderly around the surface cations. Additionally, a comparative analysis between the freezing and drying processes was conducted, demonstrating that the properties of water molecules within approximately 3 & Aring; from the mineral surface are dominated by the mineral and exhibit similarities in these two processes. However, notable differences emerge specifically at the ice-water and water-vapor interfaces. Presuming equal suction in frozen soil and non-frozen soil based on the direct analogy of ice and vapor may underestimate cryosuction. This study provides an atomic-scale insight into frozen soil and the model configuration can be extended to study other frozen soil related issues.

Abstract:Unfrozen water content significantly affects the thermal‐hydro‐mechanical characteristics of frozen soil. Currently, theoretical explanations for the presence of unfrozen water include capillary action, surface effects, adsorption forces, and the electrical double‐layer. However, the relationships between unfrozen water and these actions are not well explained, except for capillary forces. In addition, although frost heave experiments indicate that the electrical double‐layer solution on a clay particle contains the main portion of unfrozen water, the electrical double‐layer theory which produces a cation solution has not previously been used to calculate unfrozen water content. In this paper, it is assumed that the residual unfrozen water at very low temperatures (below ‐18°C) is held within the adsorption‐layer solution, and that the remaining unfrozen water within the influence of surface effects is the cationic solution in the diffuse layer. Based on these assumptions, a theoretical model of unfrozen water is established with independent variables of temperature, specific surface area, and electrical double‐layer parameters. While the input parameters of the theoretical model are numerous and difficult to obtain, the theoretical model is simplified as a parametric model. Results of the parametric model are strongly consistent with experimental data within a certain temperature range, supporting the hypothetical conditions. The similarity in the underlying mathematical structure of the derived theoretical and parametric models to current semi‐empirical models further suggests that the surface effects of clay are the main causes of unfrozen water in frozen soil.

Abstract:The low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique is widely used as a noninvasive method to characterize the water content of subsurface porous media, such as aquifers and hydrocarbon reservoirs, but the quantitative correlation between the water saturation and the NMR relaxation signal has not been fully addressed. We conducted a laboratory study to measure the NMR signals of sandstone samples with different water saturations and to develop an empirical model for estimating the water saturation. The partially saturatinthe irreducible water saturationg states were derived by a high-speed centrifuge. The result shows that the water saturation is proportional to the geometric mean of the transverse relaxation time and can be fitted through a power function. Moreover, it has been found that the fitting parameters vary with the porosity and exhibit similar behaviors with the parameters of the classical Archie equation. The water saturation as well as its mobility state can be estimated with the NMR signals and porosity data. The proposed method has the potential to be applied to detect and quantify the water content in vadose zones, phreatic aquifers, permafrost regions, and gas hydrate reservoirs.

A Novel Heat Pulse Method in Determining "Effective" Thermal Properties in Frozen Soil

Abstract:Accurate and fast measurements of thermal properties are frequently required for characterizing the heat‐water dynamics in frozen soil. Measuring the thermal properties of frozen soil without inducing ice thaw has proven challenging with conventional heat pulse (HP) methods. In this study, based on an Infinite Line Source (ILS) semi‐analytical model that applies a constant temperature lower than the freezing point at the heat source to prevent the initiation of ice thaw in the frozen soil, we propose a novel HP‐based approach to measure thermal properties, applicable at temperatures below or above 0°C. Laboratory experiments and numerical modeling were utilized to validate the applicability of the approach and optimization strategies of the measurement. We found that the proposed HP‐based approach effectively maintained the maximum spatial temperature below the freezing point and therefore estimated the bulk thermal properties of quartz sand and ice contents. An optimized measurement strategy was proposed to monitor the temperature variations 2–4 cm away from the center of the heat probe after 60 s. This progress can largely facilitate the determination of the thermal properties of multi‐phase and ‐component frozen soil such as thermal conductivity, heat flux, and ice content in cold areas across soil science, hydrology, engineering, and climate science.

Abstract:Ice fractions and water states in partially frozen muscle foods greatly affect their quality. In the study, a variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance (VT-NMR) with a liquid nitrogen temperature control system was employed to in situ investigate the relationship between ice fractions and temperatures and changes in water states during partial freezing and thawing of pork and shrimp. Results indicated that changes in ice fractions ranging from -2 ∼ -20 °C could be divided into 3 stages including slow increase, random leap and remarkable leap. More serious damages to the structures related to immobile water occurred in shrimp than in pork, and partial freezing also caused deterioration in muscle fibres related to free water. Additionally, -2 ∼ -3 °C and - 3.5 °C were the appropriate partial freezing temperatures for pork and shrimp, respectively. Therefore, the VT-NMR method possessed great potential for fundamental studies and applications of partial freezing of muscle foods.

Abstract:Knowledge of freezing characteristic of a porous media is necessary to investigate heat and water transfers in cold regions. The unfrozen water content of soil-water system is affected by its complicated internal characteristics and external factors such as temperature and pressure. Although various experimental and analytical methods have been proposed to explore the complex relation between unfrozen water and temperature, most of them are empirical or limited. In this study, a sphere-cylinder dual structure is proposed according to surface adsorption and double electrical layer effect, and then a theoretical upscaling framework is presented based on particle size distribution and the Clapeyron equation. The proposed model predicts the freezing characteristic in soil-water systems from a new pore structure considering the micro-pore space geometry. In order to evaluate the new model, 21 data sets from literature and 2 data sets from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tests in this study are used to compare with predicted results, and excellent match is obtained. The improved method has an advantage in predicting unfrozen water content at lower temperatures. In addition, from the soil freezing characteristic curve, it can be found that the residual unfrozen water contents are positively associated with clay content. Moreover, in low temperature range, T 2 cut-off value decreases with the decrease of temperature. As a fundamental study, the soil freezing characteristic researched in this study is helpful for the research on the hydraulic conductivity of frozen soil, which is significance for the stability analysis in cold region engineering, and the hydro-ecological process in seasonal frozen soil area. Abstract:The unfrozen water content of rock during freezing and thawing has an important influence on its physical and mechanical properties. This study presented a model for calculating the unfrozen water content of rock during freezing and thawing process, considering the influence of unfrozen water film and rock pore structure, which can reflect the hysteresis and super-cooling effects. The pore size distribution curves of red sandstone and its unfrozen water content under different temperatures during the freezing and thawing process were measured using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to validate the proposed model. Comparison between the experimental and calculated results indicated that the theoretical model accurately reflected the water content change law of red sandstone during the freezing and thawing process. Furthermore, the influences of Hamaker constant and surface relaxation parameter on the model results were examined. The results showed that the appropriate magnitude order of Hamaker constant for the red sandstone was 10−19 J to 10−18 J; and when the relaxation parameter of the rock surface was within 25–30 μm/ms, the calculated unfrozen water content using the proposed model was consistent with the experimental value.
