In order to quickly estimate the queuing delay in the multimedia over CRN applications without exchanging traffic information among SUs, we are the first group to propose the use of Dirichlet-prior based fully Bayesian model in each individual SU to automatically update its statistical distribution on other SUs’ Non-Contiguous (NC)-OFDM subcarrier selection strategy. Such a statistical distribution is used to estimate the probability of queuing delay being less than a threshold. In addition, we introduce a new concept called the Time Window, to accurately determine how many packets can be transmitted simultaneously over multiple subcarriers. Then, we propose a comprehensive, intelligent cross-layer scheduling scheme that can generate the optimal subcarrier selection, power and modulation allocation for each multimedia packet. Our experiments on real video transmission validate our intelligent cross-layer scheduling schemes. The simulation results match with theoretical analysis very well, and the reconstructed video quality using our proposed scheduling scheme is superior to four other popularly used schemes.

Abstract:In cognitive radio network (CRN), the utilization of spectrum resource can be dramatically improved with the secondary user (SU) opportunistically access the licensed channels. However, how to allocate the spectrum holes to each SU with the least influence on primary user (PU) appropriately. In order to estimate the packet delay in the multimedia over CRN and optimize the QoS performance of the whole system, we propose a novel spectrum sharing scheme based on S-ALOHA system. And then we analyze the probability of PUs occupying the licensed channel once again using the discrete Markov model. Moreover we consider the delay and throughput to describe the performance of multimedia transmission, and propose a dynamic algorithm to generate an optimal packet allocation strategy for each packet with the maximum utility function value. In the simulation part, we study the utility function value after packet loading over each licensed channel.
On the Queue Dynamics of Multiuser Multichannel Cognitive Radio Networks

Abstract:For protocol and system design in cognitive radio networks (CRNs), it is essential to identify which system settings or environmental conditions have great impacts on the quality-of-service (QoS) performance for secondary users (SUs) and how they influence it, which are still open issues. In this paper, an analytical framework to quantify the queue dynamics of a multi-SU multichannel CRN is developed. In the analytical framework, we consider the important lower-layer mechanisms and settings, including spectrum sensing errors, medium-access control (MAC) protocols, link adaptation technologies such as adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ), and limited buffer size. By modeling the queue dynamics as a discrete-time finite-state Markov chain (FSMC), we derive the analytical expressions of the average queue length, packet-dropping rate, and packet-collision rate. Based on these expressions, the QoS metrics including average queueing delay, packet-loss rate, and effective throughput are obtained. Simulation and numerical results are presented to verify the accuracy of the proposed analytical framework and investigate the QoS performance of SUs.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the routing and resource allocation problem in multi-hop cognitive radio networks. The collision between primary users (PUs) and secondary users (SUs) is taken into consideration, which is unavoidable if activities of PUs and SUs are not synchronized with each other. Our objective is to maximize the average throughput of a secondary traffic flow while the number of collisions is restricted to be less than a predefined threshold. Aiming at this, a proper routing path is selected according to its longtime achievable throughput performance, and then radio resource on the selected path is allocated to get a high throughput. A routing path selection algorithm is proposed which expands the paths hop by hop and discards unnecessary paths. The resource allocation problem is formulated to an optimization problem with aforementioned objective and restriction. A low-complexity heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective and can achieve the performance similar to the optimal solution.

Abstract:Cognitive radio (CR) has been proposed as a promising solution to improve connectivity, self-adaptability, and efficiency of spectrum usage. When used in video applications, user-perceived video quality experienced by secondary users is a very important performance metric to evaluate the effectiveness of CR technologies. However, most current research only considers spectrum utilization and effectiveness at MAC and PHY layers, ignoring the system performance of upper layers. Therefore, in this chapter we aim to improve the user experience of secondary users for wireless video services over cognitive radio networks. We propose a quality-driven cross-layer optimized system to maximize the expected user-perceived video quality at the receiver end, under the constraint of packet delay bound. By formulating network functions such as encoder behavior, cognitive MAC scheduling, transmission, as well as modulation and coding into a distortion-delay optimization framework, important system parameters residing in different network layers are jointly optimized in a systematic way to achieve the best user-perceived video quality for secondary users in cognitive radio networks. Furthermore, the proposed problem is formulated into a MIN-MAX problem and solved by using dynamic programming. The performance enhancement of the proposed system is evaluated through extensive experiments based on H.264/AVC.

Abstract:In multi-hop cognitive radio networks (CRNs), channel switching and rerouting for a secondary user's (SU's) traffic flow protect the transmission of the primary users (PUs); however, due to the extra overhead and delay, they deteriorate the quality of the SU's transmission. In this paper, aiming to achieve a stable end-to-end delivery for a secondary flow, we study the problem of joint routing and channel assignment (JRCA), by exploiting the concept of expected switching interval (ESI). We first formulate the JRCA problem in a general setting without any constraint on the primary activity. Then, assuming Poisson arrival traffic for the PUs, we investigate the performance of the proposed scheme. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme enables a secondary flow on average to maintain a long end-to-end transmission time and thus reduces the risk of the flow being interrupted by the appearance of the PUs.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of the multi-user uplink scheduling in cognitive radio cellular network (CogCell) is investigated. The objective is to maximize the system throughput, while protecting the QoS of primary user (PU) from being affected by secondary user (SU). Here, PU's QoS is represented by its signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SINR) outage probability. It is equivalent to say that SU can increase its transmit power to enhance the system performance as long as PU's SINR outage probability does not exceed the predefined threshold. So the first scheduling algorithm is proposed to maximize the system throughput through utilizing the multi-user diversity. Different from the first algorithm which does not take the fairness among SUs into account, the second scheduling algorithm with considering proportional fairness among SUs is proposed. It is shown to provide a satisfactory tradeoff between maximizing the system throughput and achieving fairness among SUs. Finally, these proposed algorithms are validated through extensive simulations.

Abstract:In cognitive radio networks (CRNs), the performance of transmission control protocol (TCP) of the secondary user (SU) is drastically influenced by the primary users' activities and the imperfect spectrum sensing. This is because not only the channel unavailability, sensing overhead and sensing errors, but also the strong interaction between TCP and the lower layers will lead to the reduction of the data transmission time. In this paper, we analyze the TCP throughput by taking into account all the causes of the reduction of the data transmission time, and then propose a TCP throughput model for CRNs. By simulation, we verify that our proposed TCP throughput model is more accurate than the conventional ones.

Abstract:In this paper, the queue dynamics of secondary users (SUs) in a multi-SU and multi-channel cognitive radio network is analyzed to obtain the expressions of quality of service (QoS) metrics. Abstract:In multi-channel multi-user cognitive radio systems, there are two main challenges to support traffic with delaysensitive QoS requirements, namely, the coordination among the secondary users (SUs) and the long channel occupancy time of the primary users (PUs). In this paper, we propose a hopping-based channel access scheme for SUs to improve their performance. Each SU chooses one of the channels allocated to PUs in a hopping-based manner in each time slot to opportunistically sense and transmit. This scheme not only avoids collisions among SUs, but also reduces the effect of the long channel occupancy time of PUs on the QoS performance of the SUs' delay-sensitive applications. We analyze the effective capacity of SU's service process with our proposed scheme. Numerical results show that our proposed scheme can achieve a higher effective capacity compared to random or fixed channel allocation.

Abstract:In cognitive radio (CR), the spectrum sensing of the primary user (PU) may consume some electrical power from the battery capacity of the secondary user (SU), resulting in a decrease in the transmission power of the SU. In this paper, a multislot simultaneous spectrum sensing and energy harvesting model is proposed, which uses the harvested radio frequency (RF) energy of the PU signal to supply the spectrum sensing. In the proposed model, the sensing duration is divided into multiple sensing slots consisting of one local-sensing subslot and one energy-harvesting subslot. If the PU is detected to be present in the local-sensing subslot, the SU will harvest RF energy of the PU signal in the energy-harvesting slot, otherwise, the SU will continue spectrum sensing. The global decision on the presence of the PU is obtained through combining local sensing results from all the sensing slots by adopting Or-logic Rule. A joint optimization problem of sensing time and time splitter factor is proposed to maximize the throughput of the SU under the constraints of probabilities of false alarm and detection and energy harvesting. The simulation results have shown that the proposed model can clearly improve the maximal throughput of the SU compared to the traditional sensing-throughput tradeoff model.
A Weighted Cooperative Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks

Abstract:In cognitive radio networks (CRNs), different received signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of secondary users (SUs) lead to different reliability of their local spectrum sensing decisions, and then greatly affect sensing capability of cooperative spectrum sensing. Cooperative spectrum sensing with traditional hard decisions can not improve sensing capability efficiently due to allocating the same weight to SUs' decisions. Therefore, a weighted cooperative spectrum sensing (WCSS) is proposed for CRNs to improve sensing capability. It obtains weights of SUs' decisions from their average received SNRs, integrates both their independent decisions and weights to fuse data, and makes a final sensing decision. Simulation results show that compared to cooperative spectrum sensing with traditional hard decisions, WCSS performs better at low SNR.

Abstract:This paper investigates energy consumption problem in cooperative spectrum sensing and sharing in energy-constrained Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN). With the aim of the realization of green energy-saving cognitive communications, we mainly analyze energy efficiency in the process of cooperative sensing and transmission. Robust cooperative sensing technique is presented with the consideration of sensing channel SNR and reporting channel SNR. In addition, the error rates of transmission between cooperative secondary users (SUs) are also taken into account, which are more practical than traditional cooperative sensing analysis. In spectrum sharing process, an analytical expression of transmission energy consumption and an exact closed-form expression of average BER with BPSK and MQAM modulation are derived. Based on the minimization of energy consumption, optimization algorithm is presented in order to obtain the whole average BER performance with the minimum energy consumption. Optimal cooperative SU number sets are also presented under certain transmission distance constraint. Simulation results confirm our derivation. It is indicated that the analysis of cooperative sensing and sharing provides a significant way for energy saving in CRN.

Abstract:In order to meet the dramatic wireless bandwidth demands of emerging multimedia applications, cognitive radio has been proposed as one of promising solutions to improve the spectrum efficiency. This article aims at pursuing high spectrum efficiency via accessing the idle spectrum intelligently without information exchange among users. Different from infrastructure-based wireless networks, users in cognitive radio networks tend to compete with each other to access limited idle spectrum, thus leading to a dynamically heterogeneous radio environment. In this article, a Q-learning based spectrum access scheme is proposed to adaptively allocate multimedia data over multiple idle spectrum holes. Taking into consideration the rigorous delay and throughput performance requirements of multimedia applications, we integrate these two indicators into the definition of reward function in the proposed Q-learning algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can quickly converge to a stable state in terms of throughput, power efficiency, and collision probability. Furthermore, the proposed learning rate adjustment strategy makes the performance of the spectrum access algorithm converge the quickest and only consumes 78% time to achieve the targeted collision probability, i.e., 0.1, compared with two other typical parameter adjustment strategies.

Abstract:Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) offer a promising solution for improving spectrum utilization. However, ensuring quality of service (QoS) for heterogeneous secondary users (SUs) during spectrum handoff, particularly under high primary network traffic, poses challenges. This study develops a Markov-based analytical model to evaluate the gain of a non-switching spectrum handoff technique using a hybrid interweave-underlay spectrum access strategy, considering sensing errors. The proposed model assesses the effects of the hybrid spectrum access method for prioritized traffic across multiple SU classes, aiming to meet QoS requirements for delay-sensitive traffic. The study examines the CRN's short-term behavior and realistic queueing scenarios by analyzing the system's transient dynamics. Different spectrum access methods are compared for evaluation purposes. The analysis focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of the enhanced hybrid spectrum access scheme compared to individual interweave and hybrid interweave-underlay spectrum access strategies in terms of QoS provisioning for heterogeneous SUs. The results demonstrate increased throughput and improved spectrum utilization with the suggested scheme, affirming its suitability for satisfying QoS requirements for both delay-sensitive and delay-tolerant users.

MOS-Based Channel Allocation Schemes for Mixed Services over Cognitive Radio Networks

Abstract:In cognitive radio (CR) networks, secondary users (SUs) may have various applications such as multimedia delivery and file download, resulting in different bandwidth requirements. In this paper, we propose a channel allocation scheme for mixed services, especially video streaming, based on mean opinion score (MOS) maximization. MOS is an effective metric of Quality of Experience (QoE) that directly measures the satisfaction of the end users. The cognitive radio network base station (CRNBS) collects all the SUs' application information and allocates available channel resource to the SUs with the overall user perceived MOS maximized and fairness among SUs ensured. The simulation results confirm that the proposed MOS-based channel allocation scheme outperforms the conventional good put-based scheme in terms of overall user satisfaction.

Abstract:Broadcast is a mandatory service for wireless communications, through which the signals or contents are usually propagated as broadcasts to groups of users that subscribe to the service. However, in cognitive radio networks where secondary users (SUs) opportunistically access the licensed spectrum bands, the broadcast delivery via a single broadcast channel cannot be reliably guaranteed when the broadcast channel is reclaimed by a primary user (PU, or licensed user) that has a higher priority of accessing the spectrum or when an SU moves into a region where PU transmissions are active. As a result, broadcast failures occur between the base station (BS) and the SU. To address this problem, the BS has to broadcast on more than one channel to avoid colliding with PUs and ensure that all users can correctly receive the broadcasted content. In this paper, we propose a multichannel broadcast protocol, i.e., Mc-Broadcast, that enables a network BS to broadcast over multiple channels via a channel hopping (CH) process such that the broadcasts can be successfully delivered to SUs. The CH sequence for Mc-Broadcast is generated using a mathematical construct called Langford pairing, which allows the BS to significantly reduce the broadcast latency and given a customized number of broadcast channels. Our analytical and simulation results show that the proposed method reduces the broadcast latency, and it is robust to the broadcast failure caused by PU transmissions under various network conditions.

Abstract:This paper studies the performance of hierarchical modulation-based multimedia transmission in cognitive radio (CR) systems with imperfect channel sensing results under constraints on both transmit and interference power levels. Unequal error protection (UEP) of data transmission using hierarchical quadrature amplitude modulation (HQAM) is considered in which high priority (HP) data is protected more than low priority (LP) data. In this setting, closed-form bit error rate (BER) expressions for HP data and LP data are derived in Nakagami-$m$ fading channels in the presence of sensing errors. Subsequently, the optimal power control that minimizes weighted sum of average BERs of HP bits and LP bits or its upper bound subject to peak/average transmit power and average interference power constraints is derived and a low-complexity power control algorithm is proposed. Power levels are determined in three different scenarios, depending on the availability of perfect channel side information (CSI) of the transmission and interference links, statistical CSI of both links, or perfect CSI of the transmission link and imperfect CSI of the interference link. The impact of imperfect channel sensing decisions on the error rate performance of cognitive transmissions is also evaluated. In addition, tradeoffs between the number of retransmissions, the severity of fading, and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) quality are analyzed numerically. Moreover, performance comparisons of multimedia transmission with conventional quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and HQAM, and the proposed power control strategies are carried out in terms of the received data quality and number of retransmissions.

Abstract:Exchanging time-critical information is prevalent in various industrial applications where low latency and timely delivery are paramount. Through this work, we consider a cognitive radio network comprised of multiple secondary users with time-sensitive traffic, and they can access the licensed channel under the hybrid interweave/underlay scheme to enhance spectrum utilization. Traffic in the secondary system is divided into two distinct categories: deadline-constrained data and status updates. Quality of service of data with expiration time, such as multimedia streams, is assessed through the timely throughput metric. However, the age of information metric is used to characterize the freshness of the status update packets, which is vital in several emerging applications. Within an interference constraint imposed by the primary user, a dynamic scheduling policy is proposed to optimize the weighted sum of the average age of information of the status update users under a strict timely throughput requirement for each user with deadline-constrained traffic. We formulate the optimization problem as a constrained Markov decision process. Then, through the drift-plus-penalty method, the problem is reduced into a series of unconstrained Markov decision problems. Finally, each subproblem is tackled using the backward dynamic programming technique. Simulation results illustrate the effect of the main system parameters, such as the PU transmitted power and transmission rate level, on the performance of the secondary system. Moreover, the model feasibility regarding the fulfillment of the constraints against PU activity is experimentally investigated under the proposed hybrid mode and classical interweave mode. The performance of the proposed policy is compared to two other low-complexity scheduling schemes, which ensure the satisfaction of the constraints; results show the performance superiority of our proposed policy.

Abstract:By enabling opportunistic secondary users' (SUs) usage of licensed spectrum, cognitive radio (CR) technology notably improves spectrum utilization. However, the fundamental multicast throughput optimization problem in cognitive radio networks (CRNs) is still under-explored. Considering spectrum availability and sharing fairness, in this paper, we propose a cross-layer approach to maximize the multicast throughput in multi-hop CRNs. We introduce a new service provider, called secondary service provider (SSP), to harvest the available spectrum and allocate the collected bands among SUs. The SSP also guides the transmissions of multicast CR sessions w.r.t. their contention and spectrum sharing fairness. Leveraging the proposed palmier structure for the multicast session and the multi-radio multi-band multicast (M3) conflict graph, we mathematically characterize the multicast flow routing and link scheduling, respectively. Based on the proportional fairness model, we formulate the multicast maximization problem under multiple cross-layer constraints in CRNs, and provide near-optimal solutions. Through simulations, we show that the performance of the proposed scheme is much better than that of schemes without cross-layer consideration.
