Abstract:Sheep brucellosis is one of the major infectious and contagious bacterial diseases in the sheep farms of China. In this paper, we present a sheep brucellosis model with immigration and proportional birth, and consider both direct and indirect transmission with infected animals and the bacteria of the environment. The basic reproduction number R0 of this model is identified and global dynamics are completely determined by R0. If R0<1, the disease-free equilibrium is global asymptotically stable; whereas if R0>1, there is a unique endemic equilibrium which is global asymptotically stable. By numerical simulations for the cases with R0<1 and R0>1 to demonstrate the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium and the unique endemic equilibrium, respectively. In addition, sensitivity analysis of the basic reproduction number in term of some parameters is given, this paper confirmed that elimination, vaccination and disinfection are the useful control strategies, and proposed to reduce immigration and self-sufficiency of the flock for controlling sheep brucellosis.

Abstract:Livestock transportation is a key factor that contributes to the spatial spread of brucellosis. To analyze the impact of sheep transportation on brucellosis transmission, we develop a human-sheep coupled brucellosis model within a metapopulation network framework. Theoretically, we examine the positively invariant set, the basic reproduction number, the existence, uniqueness, and stability of disease-free equilibrium and the existence of the endemic equilibrium of the model. For practical application, using Heilongjiang Province as a case study, we simulate brucellosis transmission across 12 cities based on data using three network types: the BA network, the ER network, and homogeneous mixing network. The simulation results indicate that the network's average degree plays a role in the spread of brucellosis. For BA and ER networks, the basic reproduction number and cumulative incidence of brucellosis stabilize when the network's average degree reaches 4 or 5. In contrast, sheep transport in a homogeneous mixing network accelerates the cross-regional spread of brucellosis, whereas transportation in a BA network helps to control it effectively. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the movement of sheep is not always detrimental to controlling the spread of brucellosis. For cities with smaller sheep populations, such as Shuangyashan and Qitaihe, increasing the transport of sheep outward amplifies the spatial spread of the disease. In contrast, in cities with larger sheep populations, such as Qiqihar, Daqing, and Suihua, moderate sheep outflow can help reduce spread. In addition, cities with large livestock populations play a dominant role in the overall transmission dynamics, underscoring the need for stricter supervision in these areas.

Abstract:Objective To explore the current status of brucellosis epidemic in Hulunbeier,Inner Mongolia.MethodsDescriptive analysis was conducted on the brucellosis epidemic data from 1956 to 2008,the brucellosis surveillance data from 1996 to 2006 and the vaccination effect.Results Hulunbeier was the highly endemic area of brucellosis in Inner Mongolia,even in China,a total of 13 457 brucellosis cases occurred from 1956 to 2008 with the average annual incidence rate of 12.62/lakh.In recent 15 years,the epidemic were in increasing,the epidemic area and focus were in expansion.The overall infection rate was 10.99% among the population contacting with livestock(4.94%-18.84%),which was still high compared with other areas in Inner Mongolia and in China.Conclusion The brucellosis epidemic is in high incidence period in Hulunbeier,it is necessary to strengthen the management of infectious sources to prevent and control brucellosis.

Abstract:Brucellosis, a zoonotic infectious disease caused by the Brucella genus, remains a significant global public health concern, with Inner Mongolia, China, being a notable hotspot affecting both human health and livestock. In response to this, we developed a dynamic SEIVWShIahIch model to simulate the transmission of brucellosis in Inner Mongolia. We calculated the basic reproduction number (R0 =2.86), indicating a severe epidemic trend with cases expected to increase over the coming decades. The model was fitted to human brucellosis data, and key transmission parameters were estimated to predict future trends. We also evaluated the impact of various control measures, including vaccination, disinfection, culling, and health education. While these measures positively influence disease control, they cannot completely eliminate brucellosis, suggesting that a single control strategy is insufficient. Combining vaccination and culling proved more effective, with identified threshold values for R0 and to keep R0 <1. Our findings indicate that a comprehensive strategy integrating vaccination, culling, disinfection, and health education is essential for effectively curbing brucellosis in Inner Mongolia, providing a strong foundation for optimizing future prevention and control strategies.
Global dynamics of a periodic brucellosis model with time delay and environmental factors

Abstract:In China, brucellosis has always been a significant public health issue, especially in the pastoral regions of northern provinces where animal husbandry is well-developed. However, the impact of control measures, breeding characteristics and temperature fluctuations on the transmission dynamics of brucellosis outbreaks remains unclear. We construct a periodic mechanism-driven dynamic model with latent delay coupled with the regional breeding and temperature characteristics of Xinjiang Region. Theoretically, the global dynamics of periodic solutions are demonstrated by the theory of monotone dynamical system. In the application, the monthly human brucellosis cases and average temperature data of Xinjiang from 2015 to 2020 are fitted, and the basic reproduction number of brucellosis transmission is evaluated as 0.6691. Nonetheless, it is yet unable to attain the national control standards in the short term. The findings suggest that: 1. Interactions of periodic fluctuations in Brucella survival time and sheep shearing are key factors leading to the periodic outbreaks of brucellosis. 2. Improving the frequency of environmental disinfection could quickly eliminate the brucellosis epidemic. Specifically, when the disinfection frequency was once a month, the national control standard could be reached 5 years ahead of schedule. 3. In extreme cases, when the immunization rate κ=0 or the detection rate γ=0 , the basic reproduction number might still be less than 1. From an epidemiological perspective, non-immunization control measures may be implemented with the reduction of brucellosis cases. The aforementioned statement may also bear resemblance to the preventive and control measures implemented in our country.

Abstract:Brucellosis, the most common zoonotic disease worldwide, represents a great threat to animal husbandry with the potential to cause enormous economic losses. Brucellosis has become a major public health problem in China, and the number of human brucellosis cases has increased dramatically in recent years. In order to evaluate different intervention strategies to curb brucellosis transmission in China, a novel mathematical model with a general indirect transmission incidence rate was presented. By comparing the results of three models using national human disease data and 11 provinces with high case numbers, the best fitted model with standard incidence was used to investigate the potential for future outbreaks. Estimated basic reproduction numbers were highly heterogeneous, varying widely among provinces. The local basic reproduction numbers of provinces with an obvious increase in incidence were much larger than the average for the country as a whole, suggesting that environment-to-individual transmission was more common than individual-to-individual transmission. We concluded that brucellosis can be controlled through increasing animal vaccination rates, environment disinfection frequency, or elimination rates of infected animals. Our finding suggests that a combination of animal vaccination, environment disinfection, and elimination of infected animals will be necessary to ensure cost-effective control for brucellosis.

Abstract:To explore the influence of state changes on brucellosis, a stochastic brucellosis model with semi-Markovian switchings and diffusion is proposed in this paper. When there is no switching, we introduce a critical value and obtain the exponential stability in mean square when by using the stochastic Lyapunov function method. Sudden climate changes can drive changes in transmission rate of brucellosis, which can be modelled by a semi-Markov process. We study the influence of stationary distribution of semi-Markov process on extinction of brucellosis in switching environment including both stable states, during which brucellosis dies out, and unstable states, during which brucellosis persists. The results show that increasing the frequencies and average dwell times in stable states to certain extent can ensure the extinction of brucellosis. Finally, numerical simulations are given to illustrate the analytical results. We also suggest that herdsmen should reduce the densities of animal habitation to decrease the contact rate, increase slaughter rate of animals and apply disinfection measures to kill brucella.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamical behavior of a stochastic brucellosis model that incorporates vaccination and environmental pollution transmission is investigated. Some preliminary results are first proposed, which include the existence of global positive solutions and the stability of the corresponding deterministic model. Secondly, two distinct threshold values and m are derived for the stochastic extinction of the disease by utilizing two different calculation methods. That is, when or , then the disease will be extinct with probability one, irrespective of whether the basic reproduction number of the deterministic model is greater than 1 or less than 1. Additionally, a new threshold is established for the persistence in the mean of disease and the existence of a stationary distribution for the model. Namely, if , the disease will persist in the mean with probability one, and any positive solution is ergodic, and possessing a unique stationary distribution. Finally, the numerical simulations are presented to validate the theoretical findings, and the impacts of key parameters and stochastic terms on the spread of brucellosis are further explored.

Abstract:Objective: Brucellosis has a considerable impact on human health and the economy in developing countries. In China, the biggest developing country, brucellosis shifted spread of the epidemic from northern to southern regions. Understanding the transmission characteristic of brucellosis on Hunan province, located in central China, is of great significance for successful control. Methods: We developed a multi-population and multi-route dynamic model (MPMRDM), which is an animal-human-environment coupled model. The model is an extension of the SEIR model, taking into account direct transmission and indirect transmission. We used the model to explore the spread of brucellosis and evaluate the effectiveness of various intervention strategies. Results: The animal-to-animal transmission rate was the highest at 5.14 × 10-8, while the environment-to-person transmission rate was the lowest at 9.49 × 10-12. The mean R0 was 1.51. The most effective intervention was taking personal protection, followed by shortening the infection period. Shortening the infection period combined with personal protection is the most effective two-combined intervention strategy. After any comprehensive intervention strategy was implemented, TAR dropped by 90% or more. Conclusion: The results demonstrate that animal transmission route is essential for controlling human brucellosis. Strengthening personal protection, early detection, and early treatment can effectively control the trend of brucellosis. These results can provide an important reference for optimizing brucellosis intervention plans.
An estimate of the incidence and quantitative risk assessment of human brucellosis in mainland China

Abstract:Two epidemiological models were applied to simulate whether animals with latent infections were contagious and calculate the outcomes of people that contracting brucellosis by all possible transmission routes under control measures implemented by the Chinese government. The health and economic burden of brucellosis overall presented an increasing trend from 2004 to 2017. Scenarios from epidemiological models showed that a larger scale of vaccine coverage would contribute to fewer infections in livestock and humans. S2 vaccine, the disinfection of the environment and the protection of the susceptible animals and humans could effectively reverse the trend of increasing brucellosis and reduce the incidence rates of brucellosis in humans to curb the epidemic of brucellosis in China.

Abstract:In recently years, brucellosis between humans and animals in China has shown signs of outbreak again. Brucellosis always takes a heavy toll on human health and profitability of livestock industry, but for farmers, the purpose of breeding is to make profits. Therefore, the optimal control strategy that can maximize the profits of farmers and effectively control brucellosis is needed. It is important to understand the profit mechanism of farmers and disease transmission mechanism in order to design a more effective and reasonable control strategy to maximize the profits of farmers. We propose a dynamic model combining the economic factors, behaviors of livestock farmers and transmission mechanism of brucellosis. Then we investigate the result of the optimal strategy in theory using Pontryagin Maximum Principle and its existence and uniqueness are proved. To verify the accuracy and applicability of the theory, the model are simulated by the least square method based on the price data and infected people data of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The simulation results show that brucellosis is in an outbreak in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the current control policy must be adjusted. Sensitivity analysis indicate economic factors have certain influence on the outbreak of diseases. Under different compositions of three control items (including reduce the contact between susceptible and infected animals, increase the vaccination of susceptible animals, and reduce the discharge of Brucella), we evaluate the optimal control strategy for Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region from profits and infected brucellosis livestock perspectives. The profit results show that the government should increase financial support for disease control and it is effective to implement control by stages.

Abstract:Immigration has an important influence on the growth of population and the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. A discrete age-structured epidemic SIS model with immigration is formulated and its dynamical behavior is studied in this paper. It is found that population growth will be determined by the reproductive number and the immigration rate. In the simple case without infected immigration, the basic reproductive number is defined, and the global stability of equilibria is investigated. In the case with infected immigration, there is no disease-free equilibrium, and there always exists an endemic equilibrium, and the global stability conditions of the unique endemic equilibrium is obtained.

Abstract:Brucellosis, a zoonotic disease, was made statutorily notifiable in China in 1955. We analyzed the incidence and spatial temporal distribution of human brucellosis during 1955-2014 in China using notifiable surveillance data: aggregated data for 1955-2003 and individual case data for 2004-2014. A total of 513,034 brucellosis cases were recorded, of which 99.3% were reported in northern China during 1955-2014, and 69.1% (258, 462/374, 141) occurred during February July in 1990-2014. Incidence remained high during 1955-1978 (interquartile range 0.42-1.0 cases/100,000 residents), then decreased dramatically in 1979-1994. However, brucellosis has reemerged since 1995 (interquartile range 0.11-0.23 in 1995-2003 and 1.48-2.89 in 2004-2014); the historical high occurred in 2014, and the affected area expanded from northern pastureland provinces to the adjacent grassland and agricultural areas, then to southern coastal and southwestern areas. Control strategies in China should be adjusted to account for these changes by adopting a One Health approach.

Abstract:Brucellosis is a commonly neglected zoonosis that remains a serious global public health concern. The epidemiological evolution of human brucellosis has considerably changed over the past few decades, and epidemic geography is continuously expanding. Human brucellosis is emerging and re-emerging, and is imported from areas where it is endemic due to travel, immigration, and international trade. The disease continues to be prevalent in Asia and Africa, including West Asia, Central Asia, North Africa, and East Africa, with the highest incidence in Syria, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Iran, Algeria, and Kenya. Re-emerging cases are frequently recorded in places where brucellosis has been controlled, such as Bosnia, Herzegovina, Azerbaijan, and the USA. In countries with a high disease burden, disease control and eradication have been extremely difficult because of livestock farming being the only source of livelihood, unique religious beliefs regarding animals, nomadic lifestyle, and low socioeconomic levels. Interventions focused on protecting livestock keepers are needed, particularly for those assisting with goat and sheep births and the consumption of raw dairy products. Notably, in most countries with a high disease burden, each period of several years with a low incidence rate was followed by a subsequent increase in cases, highlighting the necessity of continuous investment and surveillance. In addition, advocacy for the inclusion of brucellosis as a globally mandated reported disease, strict restrictions on animal movement, mandated consumption of pasteurized milk, and health education are needed. This study will help form an evidence-based strategy for international organizations to curb the future spread of brucellosis.

Abstract:At present, the prevention and control situation of human and animal brucellosis in China is grim and complex. Given the current epidemic situation, prevention and control difficulties, and actual needs of brucellosis, investigating the key environmental factors of human brucellosis is helpful for the effective prevention and control of the disease. The research aims are to understand what factors are driving the changes in human brucellosis. We establish a compartmental model to explain the periodic transmission dynamics of brucellosis, then evaluate the effective reproduction number, and quantify the brucella in the environment of Inner Mongolia from January 2016 to December 2020. The step-wise regression is used to determine the possible factors that are significantly correlated with the incidence of human brucellosis and brucella-contaminated environment, meteorological factors. Machine learning methods random forest and Xgboost are used to capture the relative importance of factors with statistical significance. The results show that multiple driving forces contribute to the transmission of human brucellosis, including the brucella-contaminated environment and meteorological factors. The brucella-contaminated environment accelerates the risk of human brucellosis, and clearly and strongly explains changes in the incidence of human brucellosis in Inner Mongolia. The impact of meteorological factors is indispensable, especially those with time delay. There is a significant correlation between precipitation, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, and human brucellosis in Inner Mongolia. The proposed models aid surveillance and the early control of human brucellosis outbreaks.

Abstract:Firstly, we consider an animal-human infection model of brucellosis with three distributed delays, representing the latent period of brucellosis in infected animal and human population and the survival time of brucella in the environment, respectively. The equilibrium points and basic reproduction number R 0 are calculated. By building appropriate Lyapunov functionals and applying LaSalle's invariance principle, the sufficient conditions for global asymptotic stability of two equilibria are given. Secondly, by introducing four control variables, we set the corresponding optimal control model and drive the first order necessary conditions for the existence of optimal control solution. Finally, we perform several numerical simulations to validate our theoretical results and show effects of different control strategies.
Exploring risk transfer of human brucellosis in the context of livestock agriculture transition: A case study in Shaanxi, China

Abstract:With the booming of worldwide agriculture intensification, brucellosis, one of the most neglected zoonotic diseases, has become an increasing challenge for global public health. Although the transmission patterns of human brucellosis (HB) have been studied in many regions, the dynamic transfer processes of risk and its driving factors remain poorly understood, especially in the context of agricultural intensification. This study attempted to explore the risk transfer of HB between the exact epidemic areas and the neighboring or distant low-risk areas to explain the impact of livestock agriculture intensification and foodborne infections on the transmission of HB in Shaanxi Province as a case study. We adopted multiple approaches, including test-based methods, model-based methods, and a geographical detector to detect the spatial-temporal dynamic changes of high-risk epidemic areas of HB at the county scale. We also quantitatively estimated how the related factors drove the risk transfer of the disease. Results confirmed the risk transfer pattern of HB with an expansion from north to south in Shaanxi Province and identified two primary transfer routes. In particular, in the traditional epidemic areas of the Shaanbei plateau, the farm agglomeration effect can significantly increase the risk of HB. Meanwhile, retail outlets for milk and dairy products were partially responsible for the foodborne infections of HB in the emerging epidemic areas of Xi'an. This study not only contributed helpful insights to support HB control and prevention in the rapid transition of livestock agriculture but also provided possible directions for further research on foodborne HB infections in urbanized areas.

Abstract:Brucellosis, caused by Brucella spp., is a re-emerging One Health disease with increased prevalence and incidence in Chinese dairy cattle and humans, severely affecting animal productivity and public health. In dairy cattle, B. abortus is the primary causative agent although infections with other Brucella species occur occasionally. However, the epidemiological and comparative importance of B. abortus in dairy cattle and humans remains inadequately understood throughout China due to the heterogeneity in locations, quality, and study methods. This scoping review aims to describe the changing status of B. abortus infection in dairy cattle and humans, investigate the circulating Brucella species and biovars, and identify factors driving the disease transmission by retrieving publicly accessible literature from four databases. After passing the prespecified inclusion criteria, 60 original articles were included in the final synthesis. Although the reported animal-level and farm-level prevalence of brucellosis in dairy cattle was lower compared to other endemic countries (e.g. Iran and India), it has been reported to increase over the last decade. The incidence of brucellosis in humans displayed seasonal increases. The Rose Bengal Test and Serum Agglutination Test, interpreted in series, were the most used serological test to diagnose Brucella spp. in dairy cattle and humans. B. abortus biovar 3 was the predominant species (81.9%) and biovar (70.3%) in dairy cattle, and B. melitensis biovar 3 was identified as the most commonly detected strain in human brucellosis cases. These strains were mainly clustered in Inner Mongolia and Shannxi Province (75.7%), limiting the generalizability of the results to other provinces. Live cattle movement or trade was identified as the key factor driving brucellosis transmission, but its transmission pattern remains unknown within the Chinese dairy sector. These knowledge gaps require a more effective One Health approach to be bridged. A coordinated and evidence-based research program is essential to inform regional or national control strategies that are both feasible and economical in the Chinese context.

Nonlinear state-dependent pulse control for an SIRS epidemic model with varying size and its application to the transmission of brucellosis

Abstract:As the disease spreads, it will inevitably cause important damage to the life and health of the population, resulting in changes in the population quantity. In addition, in some economically underdeveloped areas, limited medical resources will also have an important impact on the prevention and control of diseases. Based on these, a susceptible-infected-recovered-susceptible (SIRS) epidemic model is established, where state-dependent pulse control strategy, varying total population and limited medical resources are introduced. By using the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equation, differential inequality techniques, Poincare map, and other methods, some sufficient conditions of the existence and orbital asymptotical stability of positive order-1 or order-2 periodic solution are obtained in various situations. Theoretical results imply that the proportion of infected class can be controlled at a desired low level for a long time and disease will not break out among population. Finally, based on realistic parameters of brucellosis in ruminants, numerical simulations have been performed to expalin/extend our analytical results and the feasibility of the state-dependent feedback control strategy.
