Abstract:Under what circumstances will a seller be better off selling the inventory sequentially, rather than selling it all in a single auction? Does it benefit the seller to reveal how many auctions there will be? We study a uniform-price auction, in which bidders demand no more than one item, and have independent, private values. We show that even (1) when all buyers are present at the beginning of the auction, and (2) when both the seller and the buyers are impatient, a sequential sale can still benefit the seller as it stimulates competition among forward-looking bidders. This result depends on: (1) the bidder competition intensity, which is characterized by the difference between the number of items available and the number of buyers; and (2) the impatience levels of the auctioneer and the bidders. We also show that when there is uncertainty about the quantity supplied, a high-inventory auctioneer may benefit from using sequential auctions by pretending to be a low-inventory one initially.

However, we show that even (1) when all buyers are present at the beginning of the auction, (2) when both the seller and buyers are impatient, a sequential sale can still be more profitable for the seller as it stimulates competition among forward-looking bidders. This result depends on: (1) the intensity of competition, which is characterized by the number of items available relative to the number of buyers; and (2) the discount factor of the auctioneer and bidders; and (3) the uncertainty among bidders about how many items available for sale. The result is then extended to a T-period setting. When bidders are strategic players who can predict the optimal strategy of the seller, we find that the dynamic equilibrium structure of this game is quite different from that in a typical optimal stopping problem.

If bidders come sequentially, there is an obvious reason to sell items sequentially. However, even when all bidders present at the beginning of the auction, and both the auctioneer and bidders are impatient, we show that a sequential auction can still be more profitable for the auctioneer, depending on the “intensity of competition”, which is characterized by the number of items available relative to the number of bidders. Moreover, a sequential auction without a reserve price can perform better than an auction with one, if the auctioneer cannot commit not to (eventually) sell items below any reserve price announced at the beginning of the auction. A sequential auction can also be better when bidders do not know exactly how many items are available for sale. The auctioneer can then take advantage of this uncertainty by pretending to have low inventory, to stimulate competition among the bidders. Abstract:We examine the problem of selling an object to a stream of potential buyers with independent private values and participation costs. If the object can be resold in the future, and resellers can make posted price offers, the original seller may prefer to deal with potential buyers sequentially instead of holding an auction. The reason is that resale opportunities compress the dispersion of buyers' willingness to pay for the object, which lowers the surplus each buyer expects to receive in the auction. This effect may reduce participation in the initial auction to just one buyer, in which case the seller obtains zero revenue. We show that a simple form of sequential mechanism allows the seller to extract positive revenue, and becomes approximately optimal if the resale market is large. Our finding contrasts with the result that sellers usually prefer auctions when resale is not allowed (see Bulow and Klemperer in Am Econ Rev 99(4):1544–1575, 2009).

Parallel or Sequential? Platforms' Search-Pattern Preference: the Role of Assortment

Abstract:Problem Definition: Many digital platforms provide a search environment for consumers to evaluate sellers' products. We investigate a strategic platform's preference in search pattern (parallel pattern or sequential pattern) to keep in check consumers' search behavior and sellers' price and assortment reactions. Academic/Practical Relevance: Although both parallel and sequential patterns are prevalent in the online shopping environment, few studies have considered the platform's preferences in these search patterns, and implications in relevant operations management problems---sellers' assortment decisions in our paper. Methodology: We use the multinomial logit choice model to analytically explore the platform's preference in search pattern in anticipation that a specific pattern will affect the interactions between consumers and sellers. Consumers optimally choose the number of sellers to visit and the amount of product attributes to evaluate, and sellers optimally choose their prices and assortment levels, with all decisions being affected by which pattern the platform selects. Results: In our benchmark model with exogenous assortment level, our results show that the platform prefers parallel (sequential) pattern when the search cost is small (large) or when the assortment level is high (low). However, when the assortment level is a decision, the platform's preference will be altered qualitatively; that is, the platform prefers parallel (sequential) pattern when the search cost is large (small). We have identified several novel effects that are built off the fundamental difference between parallel and sequential patterns and use them to explain the platform's search-pattern preference. Interestingly, our paper shows that the platform can strategically use operational means (assortment prevention effect) and marketing means (pricing prevention effect) to manipulate consumers' search to maximize its profit. Managerial Implications: Our analytical predictions are consistent with several interesting observations in practice and shed some light on how a strategic platform designs its search environment and monetizes assortment management service.

Abstract:While both simultaneous and sequential contests are mechanisms used in practice such as crowdsourcing, job interviews and sports contests, few studies have directly compared their performance. By modeling contests as incomplete information all-pay auctions with linear costs, we analytically and experimentally show that the expected maximum effort is higher in simultaneous contests, in which contestants choose their effort levels independently and simultaneously, than in sequential contests, in which late entrants make their effort choices after observing all prior participants' choices. Our experimental results also show that efficiency is higher in simultaneous contests than in sequential ones. Sequential contests' efficiency drops significantly as the number of contestants increases. We also discover that when participants' ability follows a power distribution, high ability players facing multiple opponents in simultaneous contests tend to under-exert effort, compared to theoretical predictions. We explain this observation using a simple model of overconfidence.

Abstract:Within the independent private value paradigm, this note first analyzes two-round sequential first-price auctions with multi-unit demand. We show that the expected price in the first round is strictly lower than that in the second round due to the “extraction effect”. We then compare the revenues for the sequential auctions and the simultaneous auctions. We show that the discriminatory auction, the Vickrey auction, and the sequential second-price auctions generate the same revenue for the seller, followed in order by the sequential first-price auctions, and by the uniform-price auction.

Abstract:Two popular selling methods are compared in a one-period correlated private-values model. The seller of an object has to decide whether to sell it by posting a fixed price or by an auction. Without auctioning costs, an auction (with a reserve price) is always preferable. With positive auctioning costs, the authors find that an auction is still preferable when the distribution of buyers' valuations is sufficiently dispersed or when the object value is sufficiently high. The relations between these and previous results are also discussed.

When auctioning is costly, auctions are still preferable if the marginal-revenue curve is sufficiently steep. Abstract:Summary In this paper, we study a two-period common-value auction model in which the seller possesses some private information about the value of the object being sold. Assuming that buyers possess no private information in the first period, we characterize a set of equilibria in which the strategy of the seller is equivalent to a decision of whether to sell the object in the first or the second period with no reserve price. The seller sells in the second period if and only if the information is favorable enough. We also show that revealing private information increases the seller's profit in some equilibria, but not in others. One implication is that the seller's ability to sell on more occasions reduces his expected revenue under certain conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we first present a new performance model and an analysis for its optimal allocation in a sequential Internet auction system with a fixed reserve price. In such a system, a seller wants to sell a given amount of items through sequential auctions on the Internet. The seller has a reserve price for each item. For each auction, the seller should allocate a quantity of items from the total available items to be auctioned. The buyers arrive according to a Poisson process and bid honestly (without collusion, etc.). We consider the sequential Internet auction model to be a Markov decision process and present its performance analysis for the Internet auction model. In the analysis, we show that the result is no difference whether the reserve price is private (known only to the seller) or public (posted on the web). Then we show that in the monotonous properties of the optimal policy, the more items are in hand or the less the horizons remain, the more items are allocated for auction. Next, we compare this auction mechanism with mechanisms of fixed price, dynamic price and sequential auction with dynamic reserve price, respectively, for the seller's profit and show that the seller will receive more in the auction case than in the price case and more in the dynamic case than in the fixed price case, respectively. Finally, numerical results are given, where we compute the maximal expected total revenue and the solution of the optimal allocation, display the effect of the arrival rate, and discuss the optimal reserve price and the available number of auctions.

Abstract:We derive optimal strategies for a bidding agent that participates in multiple, simultaneous second-price auctions with perfect substitutes. We prove that, if everyone else bids locally in a single auction, the global bidder should always place non-zero bids in all available auctions, provided there are no budget constraints. With a budget, however, the optimal strategy is to bid locally if this budget is equal or less than the valuation. Furthermore, for a wide range of valuation distributions, we prove that the problem of finding the optimal bids reduces to two dimensions if all auctions are identical. Finally, we address markets with both sequential and simultaneous auctions, non-identical auctions, and the allocative efficiency of the market.

An Empirical Comparison of Sales Time Series for Online and Offline Channels for Commodities in China

Abstract:In this paper we make an empirical comparison of sales time series for online and offline channels. In particular, we analyse the sales dynamic and fluctuation level underlying the sales time series in different channels. The accumulative daily sales distributions of commodities are analysed statistically and the daily sales series are also studied from the perspective of complex networks. We find that most of the commodities' accumulative sales distributions can be fitted by power-law distributions. Visibility graphs are constructed for the daily sales series, and the accumulative degree distributions are also investigated – it is found that they also almost follow power-law distribution. The constant parameter α indicates that different specifications of the same goods have different sales characteristics, and different forms of packaging of commodities, either special offer or ordinary, also show distinctive sales fluctuation levels. The differences show that the direction of these relationships is opposite for online and offline channels.

Abstract:We study an optimal inventory control and allocation for a seller who uses sequential Internet auctions to sell replenishment products. This problem is faced not only by retailers/distributors in the retail industry but also by manufacturers who use sequential Internet auctions to sell products that can be replenished. We consider the total expected discounted profit criterion in a finite horizon and both the discounted and average profit criteria over an infinite horizon, and show the optimality of the so-called base-stock-allocate- all (BSAA) policies. Then, we simplify the problem of computing the optimal policies and profits for either the discounted or average profit criterion in an infinite horizon to an optimization problem with only one integer decision variable. We show these results for the list price case, and also for the case where the reserve price is a decision variable. Finally, numerical results are given, where the effects of several model parameters on the optimal policies and profits are numerically analyzed.
Vickrey Auctions with Sequential and Costly Participation

Abstract:This paper investigates the cutoff strategies and the effects of sequential and costly participation in Vickrey auctions with independent private value settings. It demonstrates a Stackelberg version of participation decision in auctions, while simultaneous participation can be regarded as a Cournot version in auctions. Buyers adopt cut-off participation strategies. In two-buyer case, the cutoff strategy equilibrium is unique. The follower's critical values are always monotonic in participation cost in both symmetric and asymmetric settings. This is also true for the leader with mild conditions on c.d.fs. We also characterize equilibria in three-buyer and more general n-buyer environments. We then study buyer's preference to be a leader or a follower. Comparison with simultaneous model shows that the driven-out effect is much stronger in our sequential participation model, which implies the simultaneous specification might not be desirable.

Abstract:We consider the equilibrium choice of selling mechanisms by competing firms. For a model where a number of sellers choose sequentially between any two selling mechanisms, there is a unique (subgame perfect) equilibrium under fairly natural assumptions about the monotonicity and differences of the two mechanisms. All sellers choose the mechanism that has the higher per-seller surplus at a critical mass number of sellers. If a mechanism is efficient or is favored by the buyer in some strong sense, it will be selected as the equilibrium mechanism. Otherwise, the less efficient mechanism can emerge in equilibrium, even when the number of sellers is arbitrarily large. An increase in the number of sellers need not increase the buyer's surplus, and can sometimes lead to a less eiAcient equilibrium mechanism. When more than two selling mechanisms are available, however, the equilibrium may no long be unique; and there are usually multiple equilibria when sellers choose selling mechanisms simultaneously.

Abstract:With the development of e-commerce, in agriculture supply chain, online auction is adopted as an inventory clearing tool. Comparing to mathematical models studying inventory control over online sequential auctions, our agent-based simulation model could systematically describe the complexities of bidders’ information interactions and behaviour preferences caused from financial and production perspectives, and by other supply chain members. In addition, we take into account the complex and dynamic market environment, which will impact the operation effect of auction policies. With identical auction items, the profit-maximising firm must decide auction lot-size, which is the number of units in each auction, minimum initial bid, and the time interval between auctions. To obtain the optimal solution, nested partitions framework and optimal expected opportunity cost algorithm are integrated to improve computation accuracy and efficiency. A case study based on real data is conducted to implement and validate the proposed approach. Furthermore, based on the model, the paper studies the sensitivities of the decision variables under different supply and demand scenarios.

Abstract:Compared with traditional auctions, online auctions (used by, e.g., eBay and Yahoo) have several distinguishing features, including different ending rules (hard-close and soft-close), sequential arrival of customers, and random numbers of customers, all of which make bidding behavior more complex. The phenomenon of late bidding has been reported in the literature and, although the origin of this behavior has been analyzed theoretically, it is still not clear. Here, we study both first-and second-price online auctions with either hard-or soft-close ending rules and assume either private value (PV) or common value (CV). By dividing the auction process into two stages and then using backward induction, we find that late bidding is dominant under CV, but under PV late bidding dominates only in first-price online auctions with hard-close. Moreover, for second-price online auctions the dominant strategy for customers is to report their true value immediately upon arrival under PV but near the end of the auction under CV, irrespective of ending rules. Finally, we find that the timing of customer bidding is the same for hard-and soft-close except for first-price online auctions under PV. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
