Abstract:A direct texture synthesis method on arbitrary surfaces is proposed in this paper. The idea is to recursively map triangles on surface to texture space until the surface is completely mapped. First, the surface is simplified and a tangential vector field is created over the simplified mesh. Then, mapping process searches for the most optimal texture coordinates in texture sample for each triangle, and the textures of neighboring triangles are blended on the mesh. All synthesized texture triangles are compressed to an atlas. Finally, the simplified mesh is subdivided to approach the initial surface. The algorithm has several advantages over former methods: it synthesizes texture on surface without local parameterization; it does not need partitioning surface to patches; and it does not need a particular texture sample. The results demonstrate that the new algorithm is applicable to a wide variety of texture samples and any triangulated surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel texture synthesis method based on user-control. This method is applicable to both arbitrary planar regions and 3D triangular mesh of any topology with convenient control of smooth changes in directions and scales shown in texture synthesis. With regard to an arbitrary planar region, we decompose it into relatively uniform triangular mesh to produce triangles as the unit for texture synthesis. Interpolation of user-provided vectors provides a smooth vector field capable of being used to guide the change of directions and scales in texture synthesis. It is natural to extend this algorithm to 3D triangular mesh and output the texture coordinates for each triangle vertex. Actually, our method provides a unified framework for 2D and 3D texture synthesis. The results show that our method can produce satisfactory effects based on user inputs.

Abstract:This paper uses random expanding of circular patches to avoid the zigzag problem of current scan line multi-sample synthesis algorithm.Gaussian distribution is introduced to constrain the texture distribution ratio,and Poisson image editing is used to smooth the overlapped area of different textures.We also modify the match function to take the structural features into account.The experiment shows this new method can control the texture distribution while keeping the continuity of visual concept and texture structure.

Abstract:Texture synthesis has been well studied in recent years.It has become an active research topic of computer graphics,vision,and image processing.Aiming at the current progress of texture synthesis,this work we set forth the algorithms based on synthesis sampling,character matching,constrained synthesis and multi-objects synthesis.Further more,we analyze typical algorithms' advantage and the disadvantage on the point of synthesis quality and efficiency.At last,we discuss the orientation of texture synthesis and emphasize that the constrained synthesis techniques would speed up the study development and become the key point of synthesis application.

Abstract:A new texture synthesis algorithm over arbitrary surfaces is proposed in this paper,which uses graph cut to solve aliasing problem.The algorithm also remeshes the surface,makes the surface regular and construct good mapping from surface vertex to image pixel after grid sampling of parameterization.These operations significantly improve both speed and quality of the synthesis.The last part proposed an algorithm about painting textures over surface,which has compelling performance in rendering nature object with im-perfections.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel technique named pseudo surface-texture synthesis (PSTS), which is capable of providing a target surface with textured appearance. Instead of placing texture images directly on the target surface, as in classic texture mapping/synthesis, this method takes place purely in 2D image space—it generates a 2D texture with projective variation to mimic the effect of the texture being on the surface. It is applicable to arbitrary 3D surfaces. The advantage of PSTS is that it can avoid a considerable amount of operations on the target surface required by the classic texture techniques, thus providing programming simplicity and fast performance. Within PSTS, a new 2D adaptive texture synthesis method is proposed, which is able to generate optimised textures using adaptive neighbourhoods. Experimental results are provided.
Fast Texture Synthesis Using Multiple Seeds As Constraints

Abstract:To avoid noticeable seams between texture patches and minimize the stretch and distortion of the pattern when tiling a texture on surfaces, several texture synthesis methods have been proposed in the past few years, most of them however are time consuming and suitable only for part of textures. This paper presents a new approach for texture synthesis. The algorithm first selects multiple seeds from the sample image and puts them in the synthesized images as initial matching points, those points can be a line, a few lines or rectangle, the algorithm then searches for new matching points among the neighbors of the initial matching points along a spiral path and continues this process in a recursive manner until the synthesizing image is fully filled. Compared with the traditional approaches, the synthesizing process of our technique is dramatically speed up and reach to 360 quantitative grade, and the synthesizing speed can be accelerated further in the luminance space while retaining almost the same result as the image obtained in RGB space. In addition, our method can cope with the variation of the texture along different directions with ease. Experiments show that synthesizing results are quite satisfactory.

Abstract:Traditional fractal pattern design has some disadvantages such as inability to effectively reflect the characteristics of real scenery and texture. We propose a novel pattern design technique combining fractal geometry and image texture synthesis to solve these problems. We have improved Wei and Levoy (2000)’s texture synthesis algorithm by first using two-dimensional autocorrelation function to analyze the structure and distribution of textures, and then determining the size of L neighborhood. Several special fractal sets were adopted and HSL (Hue, Saturation, and Light) color space was chosen. The fractal structure was used to manipulate the texture synthesis in HSL color space where the pattern’s color can be adjusted conveniently. Experiments showed that patterns with different styles and different color characteristics can be more efficiently generated using the new technique.

Abstract:A technique for painting directly on 3D surfaces is proposed to synthesize complex textures in this paper. Different from the conventional 2D paint system, the color painted by each stroke is applied as surface attributes to set up various textures and shading effects on 3D surfaces in real time. The approach allows users to continuously blend the texture on adjacent surface and blend multi-layer textures on the same surface. Results demonstrate that the method can be employed to create very complex textures.

Abstract:Traditional 2D texture synthesis methods mainly focus on seamlessly generating a big size texture, with coherent texture direction and homogeneous texture scale, from an input sample. This paper presents a method of synthesizing texture with variational direction and scale on arbitrary planar region. The user first decomposes the interest region into a set of triangles, on which a vector field is subsequently specified for controlling the direction and scale of the synthesized texture. The variational texture direction and scale are achieved by mapping a suitable texture patch found in the sample via matching a check-mask, which is rotated and zoomed according to the vector field in advance. To account for the texture discontinuity induced by not well matching or different texture directions/scales between adjacent triangles, a feature based boundary optimization technique is further developed. Experimental results show the satisfactory synthesis results.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an improved synthesis algorithm for both 2D and solid textures. Based on the wavelet-based multi-resolution pyramids and the improved optimization of texture synthesis, a coarse texture was synthesized as a skeleton. By adding detail information to the coarse texture, the higher resolution results can be generated. This skeletal growth-like procedure makes the result more controllable. In addition, to make full use of the spatial relationships among texture pixels, wavelet coefficients rather than traditional RGB channels are used to search the nearest neighbor pixels. Experimental study shows that the method plays well for both 2D and solid texture synthesis.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an automatic method which can transfer geometric textures from one object to another, and can apply a manually designed geometric texture to a model. Our method is based on geometry images as introduced by Gu et al. The key ideas in this method involve geometric texture extraction, boundary consistent texture synthesis, discretized orientation and scaling, and reconstruction of synthesized geometry. Compared to other methods, our approach is efficient and easy-to-implement, and produces results of high quality.

Abstract:Purpose Modern CAD systems facilitate the creation of any surface geometry imaginable, and complex surfaces for free-form grid shells are often represented by a set of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines surface patches. But it remains an intractable issue how to generate high-quality grids on complex surfaces efficiently. To solve this issue, an automatic triangular mesh generation method is presented, based on bubble dynamics simulation and a modified Delaunay method. Design/methodology/approach A moderate amount of points are first distributed on a given surface. Next, by regarding the points as elastic bubbles with the same size and introducing the forces acting on bubbles, the motion control equations of bubbles are established. The equilibrium state of the bubble system is found by Verlet algorithm. Then, the Voronoi diagram on the surface is obtained by calculating the intersection between the surface and the three-dimensional (3D) Voronoi diagram of the centers of bubbles. Finally, a triangular mesh, Delaunay triangulation on the surface, is determined based on the dual change of the Voronoi diagram. Findings This method generates meshes on the surface directly, unlike mapping-based methods, avoiding the mapping distortion. Examples are given to demonstrate the successful execution of this method. The result also illustrates that this method is applicable to various surfaces in high automation level and resultant meshes are highly uniform and well-shaped. Originality/value Thus, this method provides the convenience for the geometry design of complex free-form grid structure.

Abstract:Search-based texture synthesis algorithms are sensitive to the order in which texture samples are generated; different synthesis orders yield different textures. Unfortunately, most polygon rasterizers and ray tracers do not guarantee the order with which surfaces are sampled. To circumvent this problem, textures are synthesized beforehand at some maximum resolution and rendered using texture mapping. We describe a search-based texture synthesis algorithm in which samples can be generated in arbitrary order, yet the resulting texture remains identical. The key to our algorithm is a pyramidal representation in which each texture sample depends only on a fixed number of neighboring samples at each level of the pyramid. The bottom (coarsest) level of the pyramid consists of a noise image, which is small and predetermined. When a sample is requested by the renderer, all samples on which it depends are generated at once. Using this approach, samples can be generated in any order. To make the algorithm efficient, we propose storing texture samples and their dependents in a pyramidal cache. Although the first few samples are expensive to generate, there is substantial reuse, so subsequent samples cost less. Fortunately, most rendering algorithms exhibit good coherence, so cache reuse is high.

Abstract:Texture synthesis is one of the hottest research topics in computer graphics, computer vision and image processing fields. We present a novel adaptive patch-based algorithm on the basis of the MRF model and other related algorithms. We make up patches with different sizes in a globally optimized way, and give the pixels of a image the vision-related weights. The new algorithm not only gets better results than other algorithms when the synthesis speed is guaranteed, but also unifies patch-based and pixel-based texture synthesis methods together.
Appearance and geometry completion with constrained texture synthesis

Abstract:A novel approach for appearance and geometry completion over point-sampled geometry is presented in this paper. Based on the result of surface clustering and the given texture sample, we define a global texture energy function on the point set surface for direct texture synthesis. The color texture completion is performed by minimizing a constrained global energy using the existing texture on the surface as the input texture sample. We convert the issue of context-based geometry completion into a task of texture completion on the surface. The geometric detail is then peeled and converted into a piece of signed gray-scale texture on the base surface of the point set surface. We fill the holes on the base surface by smoothed extrapolation and the geometric details over these patches are reconstructed by a process of gray-scale texture completion. Experiments show that our method is flexible, efficient and easy to implement. It provides a practical texture synthesis and geometry completion tool for 3D point set surfaces.

Abstract:We present an approach for decorating surfaces with progressively-variant textures . Unlike a homogeneous texture, a progressively-variant texture can model local texture variations, including the scale, orientation, color, and shape variations of texture elements. We describe techniques for modeling progressively-variant textures in 2D as well as for synthesizing them over surfaces. For 2D texture modeling, our feature-based warping technique allows the user to control the shape variations of texture elements, making it possible to capture complex texture variations such as those seen in animal coat patterns. In addition, our feature-based blending technique can create a smooth transition between two given homogeneous textures, with progressive changes of both shapes and colors of texture elements. For synthesizing textures over surfaces, the biggest challenge is that the synthesized texture elements tend to break apart as they progressively vary. To address this issue, we propose an algorithm based on texton masks, which mark most prominent texture elements in the 2D texture sample. By leveraging the power of texton masks, our algorithm can maintain the integrity of the synthesized texture elements on the target surface.

Abstract:The quality and speed of most texture synthesis algorithms depend on a 2D input sample that is small and contains enough texture variations. However, little research exists on how to acquire such sample. For homogeneous patterns this can be achieved via manual cropping, but no adequate solution exists for inhomogeneous or globally varying textures, i.e. patterns that are local but not stationary, such as rusting over an iron statue with appearance conditioned on varying moisture levels. We present inverse texture synthesis to address this issue. Our inverse synthesis runs in the opposite direction with respect to traditional forward synthesis: given a large globally varying texture, our algorithm automatically produces a small texture compaction that best summarizes the original. This small compaction can be used to reconstruct the original texture or to re-synthesize new textures under user-supplied controls. More important, our technique allows real-time synthesis of globally varying textures on a GPU, where the texture memory is usually too small for large textures. We propose an optimization framework for inverse texture synthesis, ensuring that each input region is properly encoded in the output compaction. Our optimization process also automatically computes orientation fields for anisotropic textures containing both low- and high-frequency regions, a situation difficult to handle via existing techniques.

Abstract:We synthesize and animate general texture patterns over arbitrary 3D mesh surfaces. The animation is controlled by flow fields over the target mesh, and the texture can be arbitrary user input as long it satisfies the Markov-Random-Field assumptions. We achieve this by extending the texture optimization framework over 3D mesh surfaces. We propose an efficient discrete solver inspired by k-coherence search, allowing interactive flow texture animation while avoiding the blurry blending problem for the least square solver in previous work. Our technique has potential applications ranging from simulation, visualization, and special effects.
