Abstract:The chapter delves into the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in microbiology, elucidating their capacity to revolutionize traditional approaches. AI techniques offer promising avenues for enhancing virus detection, microbial diagnostics, and the prediction of antibiotic resistance, thereby advancing disease management and treatment strategies. By addressing challenges inherent in traditional microbial diagnostics, such as sample collection and time-consuming cultivation methods, AI algorithms analysing genetic data can expedite diagnosis while maintaining accuracy. Furthermore, ML techniques, particularly supervised learning, are being applied to diagnose viral infections in COVID-19 patients, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. Additionally, ML contributes to sample tracking, image collection, antimicrobial drug development, and microbial contamination control, encouraging various aspects of microbiological research and practice. AI-enhanced microscopy and colony counting enable rapid bacterial identification and visual assessment, facilitating timely interventions. Future applications include integrating AI into microbial ecosystem studies to enhance diversity analysis and predict microbial dynamics. Despite persistent challenges, such as accurate taxonomic profiling due to genomic diversity and the need to adapt clinical practices for managing challenging infections, ML in microbiology holds promise for enabling quicker and more precise analysis, indicating a new era in microbial research and clinical microbiology.
