Abstract:The utilization of fossil fuels has caused the shortage of energy and environment problems. Hydrogen energy has advantages include safety, non-pollution, abundant reserves, renewable energy and high energy density. However, safe operation and efficient hydrogen (H2) storage remain technical challenges in commercialization. Research has found that the two-dimensional material has excellent adsorption properties, making it a safe and efficient material to store H2. The hydrogen storage properties of metal modified 6,6,12-graphyne (GY) have been studied by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation and density functional theory. The results of the calculation show that Na modified system is more suitable for the adsorption of H2 molecules than the Sc and Ca modified system. Using Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation, which shows that the hydrogen storage capacity of Na modified 6,6,12-GY can reach 16.16 wt% at 77 K and 100 bar. The calculation results show that Na modified 6,6,12-GY can adsorb 13 H2 molecules on each side (16.55 wt%) with -0.102 eV average adsorption energy. There are two types of polarization observed in adsorbed H2. The first four pairs of H2 molecules exhibit polarization parallel to the base plane, perpendicular to the H-H bond direction. This polarization arises from the electrostatic interaction between the Na atom and 6,6,12-GY. The 5th to 13th pair polarization of H2 molecules along the H-H bond direction is caused by the electric field generated by the already polarized H2. On the one hand, the polarized charge of the four pairs of hydrogen molecules near the Na atom can shield the electric field generated by the Na ion; on the other hand, more H2 molecules can be polarized, enabling stable adsorption in the outer region of the Na@6,6,12-GY system. The adsorbed H2 exhibits two types of polarization, arising from different mechanisms. This allows for additional polarization and promotes stable adsorption in the peripheral areas of the Na@6,6,12-GY system. Above all, the 6,6,12-GY system modified by metal atoms has excellent H2 storage performance and the potential to become a high-capacity H2 storage material.
