Abstract:Mixed dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (MD-vdWhs) open a huge potential to fabricate novel devices based on numerous metamaterials with superior magnetotransport properties. In conventional vdWhs, a variety of two dimensional (2D) layers has been stacked together to demonstrate vdWhs with phenomenal functionalities. However, fabricating 2D materials and their vdWhs over large areas with excellent magnetoresistance (MR) characteristics remains a major challenge. Graphene foam (GF), a 3D form of Dirac graphene continued to gather much attention for magnetotransport applications due to its gram-scale/cost effective production and better magnetoresistance properties. Also, many combinations could be possible with GF to create numerous MD-vdWhs with hybrid functionalities, potentially giving access to explore novel devices with unique hybrid properties. Herein, we demonstrate MD-vdWhs (2D+3D) of GF with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) to investigate magnetotransport properties. Remarkably, MR of GF is increased from ∼130% to ∼210% at 5 K under an applied magnetic field of 5 T by fabricating its MD-vdWhs with MoS2. Our systematic investigations show that distinct magnetotransport properties in GF/MoS2 vdWhs are strongly correlated to the enhancement in spin-orbit-coupling of the MD-vdWhs. Together, these results present a promising path toward the fabrication of future sensing and memory devices.

Abstract:Graphene fiber (GF) is of practical importance because it integrates the remarkable properties of individual graphene sheets into useful, macroscopic ensembles that possess the common characteristics of fibers, such as mechanical flexibility for textiles, while maintaining the unique advantages over conventional carbon fibers, such as low cost, light weight, shapeability and ease of functionalization in an in situ or post-synthetic manner for various applications. In this review, we judiciously summarize the significant advances in GFs achieved by our group and others in recent years, including the tunable and controllable preparation of GFs with functionality and their remarkable applications for unconventional devices, such as flexible fiber-type actuators, robots, motors, photovoltaic cells and supercapacitors.
Electronic, Magnetic and Transport Properties of Graphene Ribbons Terminated by Nanotubes

Abstract:We study, by density functional and large-scale tight-binding transport calculations, the electronic structure, magnetism and transport properties of the recently proposed graphene ribbons with edges rolled to form nanotubes. Edges with armchair nanotubes present magnetic moments localized either in the tube or the ribbon and of metallic or half-metallic character, depending on the symmetry of the junction. These properties have potential for spin valve and spin filter devices with advantages over other proposed systems. Edges with zigzag nanotubes are either metallic or semiconducting without affecting the intrinsic mobility of the ribbon. Varying the type and size of the nanotubes and ribbons offers the possibility to tailor the magnetic and transport properties, making these systems very promising for applications.

Abstract:Graphene fiber is a macroscopic carbonaceous fiber composed of microscopic graphene sheets, and has attracted extensive attention. Graphene building blocks form a highly ordered structure, resulting in fibers with the same properties as graphene, such as superior mechanical and electrical performance, low weight, excellent flexibility, and ease of functionalization. Moreover, graphene fibers are compatible with traditional textile technologies, facilitating the development of wearable electronics, flexible energy devices, and smart textiles. Graphene fibers were first prepared in 2011 by wet spinning of graphene oxide (GO) solution, which was dispersed in water. Various fabrication methods have been developed to assemble graphene sheets into fibers since then and different strategies have been proposed to optimize their structure and performance. Graphene fibers have applications in numerous fields, including conductors, sensors, actuators, smart textiles, and flexible energy devices. This review aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the preparation approaches, properties, and applications of graphene fibers. Firstly, the preparation processes, unique structures, and properties of three typical carbonaceous fibers-carbon fibers, carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers, and graphene fibers-are compared. It can be seen that graphene fibers possess the unique structures, such as the large grain sizes and highly aligned structure, endowing them with the outstanding properties. Then a variety of fabrication techniques have been summarized, including wet spinning, dry spinning, dry-jet wet spinning, spaceconfined hydrothermal assembly, film conversion approach, and template-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Wet spinning is a common method to fabricate high-performance graphene fibers and is promising for the large-scale production of graphene fibers. Besides, various strategies for improving the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of graphene fibers are introduced in detail, including well-chosen graphene building blocks, optimized fabrication processes, and high-temperature treatments. Although the electrical and thermal transport properties of typical graphene fibers are better than those of carbon fibers, the strength and modulus of graphene fibers are inferior. Therefore, the enhancement of the mechanical properties of graphene fibers by optimizing the composition of precursors, controlling and adjusting the assembly processes, and exploring feasible post-treatment procedures are essential. Meanwhile, the review outlines the applications of graphene fibers in high-performance conductors, functional fabrics, flexible sensors, actuators, fiber-shaped supercapacitors and batteries. Finally, the persisting challenges and the future scope of graphene fibers are discussed. We believe that graphene fibers will become a new structural and functional material that can be applied in numerous fields in the future, aided by the continuous development of materials and techniques.
Possible ferro-electro-magnetic behaviours of graphene-based materials: hydrogenated graphene, MWCNTs and reduced graphene-oxide (GO)

Abstract:This study investigated the electric polarization and magnetic behaviours of various graphene-based materials, including hydrogenated graphene (H-graphene), multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and reduced graphene oxide (r-GO). Results showed that MWCNTs exhibit higher magnetization, with a magnetic squareness (M r/M s) of approximately ≈0.5, compared to H-graphene (≈0.25). H-graphene exhibits the highest electric polarization compared to MWCNTs/r-GO, whereas r-GO demonstrates the lowest levels of polarization and magnetization compared to H-graphene/MWCNTs. The valence band maximum (4.08 eV for MWCNTs, 4.26 eV for H-graphene, and 4.78 eV for r-GO) in quasi-localized states at the Fermi level results in defects in the graphene-based lattice, which are associated with dipole moment and lead to alterations in magnetic behaviours. Different density of states (DOS) is attributed from the ultra-violet photoelectron spectra and the small variations in the Fermi edge is observed in H-graphene, MWCNTs, and r-GO are responsible for the observed magnetisation and polarizations. The unique polarization/magnetization behaviours present an opportunity for potential exploitation in storage and information processing technologies in the science and engineering community.
Magnetism and Magnetic Transport Properties of the Polycrystalline Graphene Nanoribbon Heterojunctions

Abstract:The polycrystalline structures for graphene are practically unavoidable by the currently existing growth routes, thus the scattering issue of electrons by grain boundary (GBs) becomes a theoretical and an experimental relevant one. Here, magnetic transport properties of the polycrystalline graphene nanoribbons (PGNRs) with a zigzag–armchair–zigzag structure are investigated systematically. It shows that GBs can induce significant localized electron states and magnetic ordering in the region consisting of GBs and armchair segment, and the interdomain electronic transmission across the GBs is transparent or blocked completely depending on the spin direction (α or β) of electrons as well as the microscopic details and relative orientation of GBs, which causes a special spin polarization for the magnetic transport. Especially, the perfect spin-filtering, spin-rectifying, and giant magnetoresistance effects can be realized simultaneously in such heterojunctions. These novel features can be rationalized by the spin splitting of molecular levels as well as the delocalization degree and parity limitation of molecular orbital wave functions in the scattering region serving as an extended molecule. Also shown is that PGNR-based heterojunctions possess a large range of magnetic behaviors with variation of its geometrical size.
Unusual Transport Properties in Carbon Based Nanoscaled Materials: Nanotubes and Graphene

Abstract:The massless Dirac particle moving at the speed of light has been a fascinating subject in relativistic quantum physics. Nanoscale graphitic materials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, now provide us with an opportunity to investigate such exotic effects in low-energy condensed matter systems. The unique electronic band structure of graphene lattice provides a linear dispersion relation where the Fermi velocity replaces the role of the speed of light in the usual Dirac Fermion spectrum. Recent experimental studies reveal that such unconventional electronic structure in graphitic carbon leads to unique electronic transport phenomena in 1-dimensional carbon nanotubes and 2-dimensional graphene. Combined with semiconductor device fabrication techniques and the development of new methods of nanoscaled material synthesis/manipulation enables us to investigate mesoscopic transport phenomena in these materials. The exotic quantum transport behavior discovered in these materials, such as room temperature ballistic transport, unusual half-integer quantum Hall effect, and a non-zero Berrys phase in magneto-oscillations will be discussed in the connection to Dirac Fermion description in graphitic systems. Peculiar RKKY Behavior Involving Electron Transfer Effect in Sp3 Semi-Ionic F-doped Graphene Metal

Abstract:Ferromagnetic graphene is particularly promising for spintronics devices applications, in which RudermanKittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction is widely considered to play the crucial role in the magnetic coupling between the adjacent localized spins. Recent theoretical studies show that integrating electron transfer effect into the typical RKKY interaction can effectively tune the decay rate and the oscillation behavior. However, the real system for studying such behavior remains scarce. Here, by combining magnetization measurements and first-principles calculations, we show that semi-ionic F (s-F)-doped graphene (s-FG) exhibits peculiar s-F- concentration-dependent magnetism and is a real platform for such study. Especially, with the decrease of the s-F concentration of s-FG, its ferromagnetic T C exhibits an unusual increase. First-principles calculations show that the magnetism of s-FG (i) can be understood by the picture of RKKY behavior that the localized spins are mainly located on s-F adatoms accompanied by partial spin polarization of nearby carbon atoms, while (ii) it deviates the typical sublattice-dependent RKKY behavior presented as a nonmagnetic or antiferromagnetic state for localized spins on the same sublattice for some s-FG structures. The peculiar behavior is proposed to be related to the electron transfer effect, which can be evidenced by the good consistency of magnetism of s-FG by an effective Anderson impurity model.

Abstract:Graphene fibers,originally made from natural graphite,were first reported in 201 1 as a new kind of carbona-ceous fiber.They are one-dimensionally assembled from neat graphenes or functionalized graphenes liquid crystals by wet-spinning.Graphene fibers exhibit good mechanical,electrical,and thermal performance,providing wide applications in fields of conductive fabrics,heat dissipation,and energy storage.By introducing other molecules into graphene fibers, graphene composite fibers with special function can be produced.Nacre mimic graphene composite fibers with layered structure and excellent mechanical properties can be obtained by adding polymer;magnetic or highly conductive graphene fibers can be fabricated by introducing magnetic or conductive nanoparticles.In addition,graphene fibers can be fabrica-ted into flexible devices such as supercapacitors.Here,we reviewed the progress in research of graphene fibers,including the preparation and applications of neat graphene fibers and graphene composite fibers.We also gave a perspective on the future of graphene fibers.

Abstract:Graphene has attracted a great interest in material science due to its novel electronic structrues. Recently, magnetism discovered in graphene based systems opens the possibility of their spintronics application. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the magnetic behaviors and electronic structures of graphene systems, including 2-dimensional graphene, 1-dimensional graphene nanoribbons, and 0-dimensional graphene nanoclusters. Theoretical research suggests that such metal-free magnetism mainly comes from the localized states or edges states. By applying external electric field, or by chemical modification, we can turn the zigzag nanoribbon systems to half metal, thus obtain a perfect spin filter.

Abstract:The hybrid graphene-quantum dot devices can potentially be used to tailor the electronic, optical, and chemical properties of graphene. Here, the low temperature electronic transport properties of bilayer graphene decorated with PbS colloid quantum dots（CQDs） have been investigated in the weak or strong magnetic fields. The presence of the CQDs introduces additional scattering potentials that alter the magnetotransport properties of the graphene layers, leading to the observation of a new set of magnetoconductance oscillations near zero magnetic field as well as the high-field quantum Hall regime.The results bring about a new strategy for exploring the quantum interference effects in two-dimensional materials which are sensitive to the surrounding electrostatic environment, and open up a new gateway for exploring the graphene sensing with quantum interference effects.
Defect-induced, Temperature-Independent, Tunable Magnetoresistance of Partially Fluorinated Graphene Foam

Abstract:The magnetoresistance (MR) of graphene is fixed under a particular magnetic field and temperature but can be further improved or controlled by introducing artificial defect states. These artificial defects can be introduced via fluorination, which is a conventional method to control the magnitude of the MR required for magnetoelectronic applications. One of the main benefits of fluorination is the defluorination, which occurs within a few days. Herein, tunable and temperature-independent magnetotransport of graphene foam (GF) is achieved using a controlled fluorination process. The magnitude of the MR decreases with the increasing fluorination time (i.e., 30, 60 and 90 min), indicating that defect-induced scattering plays a major role in the magnetotransport properties of fluorinated GF (FGF). The magnitude of the MR in the FGF specimens at room temperature (under a magnetic field strength of 5 T) was observed for three months; a particular value of the MR (FGF-30-59%, FGF-60-58%, FGF-90-37%) is observed that is higher in magnitude than that on the first day of fluorination. In this way, fluorination of GF can provide a pathway to tune the magnetotransport properties, which is very useful for magnetoelectronics devices, especially highly sensitive magnetic sensors. Large Unsaturated Room Temperature Negative Magnetoresistance in Graphene Foam Composite for Wearable and Flexible Magnetoelectronics

Abstract:Room temperature positive magnetoresistance (PMR) in graphene is a conventional phenomenon but we observed large negative magnetoresistance (NMR) in GF/polydimethylsiloxane (GF/PDMS) at room temperature for the first time. The largest NMR ~ 35% was detected at 250 K, while PMR is observed below 200 K. Furthermore, PMR at all temperatures is observed in regular GF specimens, hence, NMR is the result of the infiltration with the electrically insulating polymer. Forward interference and wavefunction shrinkage model has been employed to understand the transport mechanism in GF/PDMS. A critical temperature ~ 224 K for switching between NMR and PMR is observed at the crystallization temperature of PDMS, suggesting a change in polymer chain conformation may be a major reason leading to NMR in GF/PDMS specimens thus role of mechanical properties of PDMS in NMR cannot be ignored and observed locally via specially resolved atomic force microscopy. In addition, storage modulus and heat flow study shows similar transition temperature (~ 200 K) of NMR to PMR and provide an evidence of mechanical stable specimens. As is known, large, tunable, and unsaturated NMR at room temperature is very useful for future facile practical shapeable magnetoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Motivated by their unique structure and excellent properties, significant progress has been made in recent years in the development of graphene-based fibers (GBFs). Potential applications of GBFs can be found, for instance, in conducting wires, energy storage and conversion devices, actuators, field emitters, solid-phase microextraction, springs, and catalysis. In contrast to graphene-based aerogels (GBAs) and membranes (GBMs), GBFs demonstrate remarkable mechanical and electrical properties and can be bent, knotted, or woven into flexible electronic textiles. In this review, the state-of-the-art of GBFs is summarized, focusing on their synthesis, performance, and applications. Future directions of GBF research are also proposed.

Abstract:Interfacing graphene with other low-dimensional material has gained attentions recently due to its potential to stimulate new physics and device innovations for optoelectronic and electronic applications. Here, we exploit a solution-processed approach to introduce colloidal quantum dot (CQD) to the bilayer graphene device. The magnetotransport properties of the graphene device is drastically altered due to the presence of the CQD potential, leading to the observation of AB-like oscillation in the quantum Hall regime and screening of the intervalley scattering. The anomalous magnetotransport behavior is attributed to the coulombic scattering introduced by the CQDs and is shown to be highly asymmetric depending on the polarity of the transport carriers. These results prove the potential of such flexible method for engineering microscopic scattering process and performance of the graphene device that may lead to intriguing device application in such hybrid system.

Abstract:Graphene foam is becoming a material of choice for magnetoelectronic devices due to its large, linear and unsaturated room temperature magnetoresistance. However, the magnetoresistance of graphene foam is not as large as that of monolayer graphene. Herein, we describe how magnetoresistance ~ 100% was detected at room temperature under a magnetic field of 5 T that is comparable to the magnetoresistance in monolayer graphene; the highest magnetoresistance of ~158% was detected at 5 K under a magnetic field of 5 T. Unlike monolayer graphene, graphene foam is far more comfortable with producing in gram scale and utilizing in magnetoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We study the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) and spin transport in ferromagnetic graphene junctions composed of ferromagnetic graphene (FG) and normal graphene (NG) layers. It is found that the TMR in the FG/NG/FG junction oscillates from positive to negative values with respect to the chemical potential adjusted by the gate voltage in the barrier region when the Fermi level is low enough. Particularly, the conventionally defined TMR in the FG/FG/FG junction oscillates periodically from a positive to negative value with increasing the barrier height at any Fermi level. The spin polarization of the current through the FG/FG/FG junction also has an oscillating behavior with increasing barrier height, whose oscillating amplitude can be modulated by the exchange splitting in the ferromagnetic graphene.

Abstract:Magnetic edge states of graphene nanoribbons have attracted much attention resulting from their potential applications in spintronics and quantum computing. Despite recent progress in graphene synthesis, the predicted ferromagnetic state has not been observed due to the challenge of the precise control of zigzag edge termination. In the meantime, more people have begun to recognize a different magnetic property, i.e., diamagnetism of graphene. Fundamentally, graphene diamagnetism arises from orbital or Landau magnetization of pi electrons, and it is strongly related to the Dirac cone band structure and Fermi level.

Abstract:New fibers with increased strength and rich functionalities have been untiringly pursued by materials researchers. In recent years, graphene fiber has arisen as a new carbonaceous fiber with high expectations in terms of mechanical and functional performance. In this review, we elucidated the concept of sprouted graphene fibers, including strategies for their fabrication and their basic structural attributes. We examine the rapid advances in the promotion of mechanical/functional properties of graphene fibers, and summarize their versatile applications as multifunctional textiles. Finally, a tentative prospect is presented. We hope this review will lead to further work on this new fiber species.
Extremely large magnetoresistance in twisted intertwined graphene spirals

Abstract:Extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) is highly applicable in spintronic devices such as magnetic sensors, magnetic memory, and hard drives. Typically, XMR is found in Weyl semimetals characterized by perfect electron-hole symmetry or exceptionally high electric conductivity and mobility. Our study explores this phenomenon in a recently developed graphene moiré system, which demonstrates XMR owing to its topological structure and high-quality crystal formation. We investigate the electronic properties of three-dimensional intertwined twisted graphene spirals (TGS), manipulating the screw dislocation axis to achieve a rotation angle of 7.3°. Notably, at 14 T and 2 K, the magnetoresistance of these structures reaches 1.7 × 107%, accompanied by a metal-insulator transition as the temperature increases. This transition becomes noticeable when the magnetic field exceeds a minimal threshold of approximately 0.1 T. These observations suggest the possible existence of complex, correlated states within the partially filled three-dimensional Landau levels of the 3D TGS system. Our findings open up possibilities for achieving XMR by engineering the topological structure of 2D layered moiré systems.
