Abstract:Abstract BACKGROUND: Experimental data on the effect of a high dose of gamma radiation 6 Gy on the activity of antioxidant defense enzymes and lipid peroxidation products (LPO) are presented immunocompetent organs in the body of animals in the experiment. It was found that the effect of ionizing radiation led to an increase in the level of diene conjugates (DC) and malondialdehyde (MDA), inhibition of the activity of catalase (CАT) and glutathione peroxidase (GlP), glutathione reductase (GlR) enzymes in almost all the studied objects, as a result of which the development of oxidative stress was observed in them. The results of the study indicate serious changes in the lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system (AOS) under radiation stress. An imbalance of POL-AOS creates prerequisites for the occurrence of immunopathological conditions, contributing to the development of radiation-related tumor infection. pathologies. Violations of functional relationships of the catalytic redox system. AIM: The aim of the study was to study the effect of radiation at a dose of 6 Gy on the parameters of lipoperoxidation and the antioxidant system in experimental rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The work was carried out on 20 male Wistar rats weighing 240 ± 20 g. Experimental animals are divided into two groups: I - normal group; II - group exposed to γ-rays at a dose of 6 Gy. RESULTS: After radiation exposure, all objects showed a tendency to increase the product of lipid peroxidation. As is known, the activation of lipid peroxidation is based on excessive generation of reactive oxygen species, which exceeds the physiological capabilities of antioxidant systems that occur after the depletion of enzyme systems. CONCLUSION: Based on the results obtained, it was found, that irradiation increases the intensity of the formation of POL products and their accumulation, reduces the activity of enzymes of the antioxidant system in immunocompetent organs in irradiated animals, as a result, the lack of the antioxidant system causes oxidative stress in the body.
Effect of ionizing radiation on bio-oxidase activities in cytoplasm of mouse blood and liver cells

Abstract:This article reports the changes of bio-oxidase activities in cytoplasm of bolood and liver cells from mice irradiated with different doses (3, 6, 9 and 12Gy). Experimental results showed that the total activities of superoxide dismutase, copper zinc superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase in cytoplasm of blood and liver cells significantly decreased with increase of irradiation dosage, However, the actirity of contents of lipid peroxidase in the blood and liver cells significantly increased in high significantly influenced by radiation damage. The extent of changes in bio-oxidase are significantly influenced by radiation damage. The extent of changes in bio-oxidase is related with radiation dosage. the main cause of the increase in lipid peroxidase is the decrease of bio-oxidase activities after irradiation.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of the investigation was to study the effect of acute, total gamma-irradiation in a sublethal dose on the biophysical properties of erythrocytes, the intensity of lipid peroxidation, antioxidant supply and hemocoagulating properties of erythrocytes. The experiments were carried out on 11-12-week-old age guinea pigs, males and females in equal numbers. The animals were exposed to a single total radiation at a dose of 4.5 Gy (sublethal dose, LD 50/30). The studies were carried out on the 7th day after exposure to radiation (at the height of radiation sickness). The development of radiation damage was accompanied by intense erythropoiesis and the appearance of erythrocytes with a high resistance to hemolysis and an increased sedimentation rate. After acute gamma irradiation, depletion of the antioxidant system was noted. It manifested in a decrease in the activity of superoxide dismutase of erythrocytes by 19.7% (p<0.01) and the concentration of serum ceruloplasmin by 21.5% (p<0.01). The content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and their accumulation while the incubation of erythrocytes remained within the normal range. The erythrocytes of the irradiated animals exhibited increased procoagulant and decreased antiheparin activity, which reflects conformational changes in highly radiosensitive fatty acid chains of phospholipids in their membranes. A decrease in the fibrinolytic activity of erythrocytes in irradiated animals was found.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effect of zinc and vitamin E on protecting liver from radiation damage. Methods After a single 7.5 Gy whole-body irradiation by 60 Co gamma rays mice were fed with zinc and vitamin E,then LPO concentration and GSH-Px activity in liver homogenate were tested and changes of membrane fluidities in mitochondria and microsome were observed. Results After irradiation,the LPO concentration in liver homogenate increased significantly,whereas the activity of GSH-Px decreased.There were changes of membrane fluidities in both mitochondria and microsomes. Conclusions Zinc and vitamin E can inhibit lipid peroxidation and increase the activity of GSH-Px and membrane fluidity.They might have great potenials in protection against hepatic radiation injury.;

Abstract:The article presents experimental data on the impact of high dose gamma-radiation exposure (6 Gy) on immune system, lipid oxidation products (LOPs) and antioxidant defense system (AODS) enzymes activity. The study revealed that high dose radiation exposure suppressed the cell-mediated immunity especially with respect to T-lymphocytes and their subpopulations as well as immune defense and adaptation mechanisms. Ionizing radiation exposure led to increase of conjugated lipid dienes and malondialdehyde (MDA), and to inhibition of catalase and glutathione peroxidise activity, thus promoting oxidative stress in most of the examined samples. The results indicate dramatic changes in lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system under the radiation stress. Both cell-mediated and humoral immunity inhibition, mononuclear phagocyte system suppression and lipid peroxidation / antioxidant defense imbalance provide a background for immunopathological disorders, provoking radiation-related carcinogenesis. Impairment of functional network related to glutathione-dependent redox catalytic system decreases human antioxidant status, that necessitates specification of new promising methods correcting adaptation.

Abstract:Objective To study the effects of low dose rate 60Co γ ray combined with 252Cf neutron irradiation on hematopoietic and antioxidation systems in rats.Methods Sixteen SD male rats were randomly divided into the irradiation group and the control group,each consisting of 8 rats.The irradiation group was exposed to whole-body 60 Co γray (with daily dose rate of 0.072 Gy) for 1 hour and to 252 Cf neutron (with daily dose rate of 0.085 mGy/h) for 20 hours,for a total of 7 successive days.Peripheral blood cell counts,main organ indices,bone marrow DNA contents,SOD activity and MDA content of rats were monitored,at day 8 after irradiation.Results Compared with those of the control group [(6.2 ± 2.4) × 109/L],WBC of the irradiation group decreased significantly following irradiation [(3.4 ± 1.2) × 109/L],(P ＜ O.05),but no statistical significance could be noted in the changes of various organ indices (P ＞ O.05).Bone marrow DNA contents and serum SOD activity all decreased significantly (P ＜ 0.05),while organ indices and MDA contents seemed to increase,but without statistical significance (P ＞ 0.05).Conclusions 60 Co γirradiation combined with 252Cf neutron irradiation could obviously damage the hemopoietic and anti-oxidation systems of rats.
Effects of total body irradiation on fatty acid and total lipid content of rats

Abstract:We examined time-dependent changes in plasma lipids of rats given total body irradiation (TBI) with X-rays at 3 Gy. for consecutive periods. Animals were exposed to x ray radiations consecutively for 20 days at 5 day interval thereafter five animals were picked at random and sacrificed (5, 10, 15 and 20 days after beginning the exposure). The triacylglycerols and total cholesterol serum levels were significant differences between control and experimental groups after the first exposure (5 days), values for the triacylglcerols were significantly higher with the second (day 10) and third (day 15) radiation exposures but not with the fourth radiation exposures (day 20) (p<0.05). However, the serum cholesterol values were not found to be significant with the second and third exposures but with the fourth exposure (day 20) (p<0.05). The serum HDL-C concentrations were not significantly different between control and experimental groups at any time analyzed. But the LDL cholesterol was found to decrease on days 5 and 20 of the experimental period. Our results indicate that the applied long term exposure to x rays ionization radiations exposure may induce slight but statistically significant alterations in some serum lipids profile of rats, within the physiological range. The mechanisms for the effects of these ionizing radiations on serum lipid profile are not well understand yet, we suggest that the changes could be due to some non-specific stress reactions. The consequences of our observation are not known yet, but could point to some possible clinical intervention.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of ionizing radiation on levels of element and androgenic hormone in mouse blood.Methods Wistar rats were exposed to 5Gy irradiation and the levels of Ca,P,K,Mg,Fe,Cu,Zn and Mn in blood and plasma,and testosterone and dihydro testosterone in plasma were determined after 0.5h,4h and 24h.Results After 0.5h of exposure,the blood levels of Mg significantly decreased and Cu significantly increased(P0.05).After 24h,the blood levels of Fe was significantly higher in the irradiation group than in the control group;while,its plasma levels was significantly lower in the irradiation group(P0.05).After 0.5h and 4h,the plasma levels of testosterone was significantly lower in the irradiation group than in the control group(P0.05).Conclusion Some elements and hormone were affected by ionizing radiation.The mechanism and application value should be further studied.

Abstract:Radiation-induced heart disease presents a significant challenge in the event of an accidental radiation exposure as well as to cancer patients who receive acute doses of irradiation as part of radiation therapy. We utilized the spontaneously hypertensive Wistar-Kyoto rat model, previously shown to demonstrate drug-induced cardiomyopathy, to evaluate the acute and long-term effects of sub-lethal total body gamma irradiation at two, four, and fifty-two weeks. We further examined irreversible oxidative protein carbonylation in the heart immediately following irradiation in the normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rat. Both males and females sustained weight loss and anemic conditions compared to untreated controls over a one-year period as reflected by reduced body weight and low red blood cell count. Increased inflammation was detected by elevated IL-6 serum levels selectively in males at four weeks. Serum cardiac troponin T and I analyses revealed signs of cardiomyopathy at earlier timepoints, but high variability was observed, especially at one year. Echocardiography at two weeks following 5.0Gy treatment revealed a significant decrease in cardiac output in females and a significant decrease in both diastolic and systolic volumes in males. Following 10.0Gy irradiation in the normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rat, the heart tissue showed an increase in total protein oxidative carbonylation accompanied by DNA damage indicated by an increase in γ-H2AX. Using proteomic analyses, we identified several novel proteins which showed a marked difference in carbonylation including those of mitochondrial origin and most notably, cardiac troponin T, one of the key proteins involved in cardiomyocyte contractility. Overall, we present findings of acute oxidative protein damage, DNA damage, cardiac troponin T carbonylation, and long-term cardiomyopathy in the irradiated animals.

Abstract:Heavy ions refer to charged particles with a mass greater than four (i.e., alpha particles). The heavy ion irradiation used in radiotherapy or that astronauts suffer in space flight missions induces toxicity in normal tissue and leads to short-term and long-term damage in both the structure and function of the brain. However, the underlying molecular alterations caused by heavy ion radiation have yet to be completely elucidated. Herein, untargeted and targeted lipidomic profiling of the whole brain tissue and blood plasma 7 days after the administration of the 15 Gy (260 MeV, low linear energy (LET) = 13.9 KeV/μm) plateau irradiation of disposable 12C6+ heavy ions on the whole heads of rats was explored to study the lipid damage induced by heavy ion radiation in the rat brain using ultra performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS) technology. Combined with multivariate variables and univariate data analysis methods, our results indicated that an orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS–DA) could clearly distinguish lipid metabolites between the irradiated and control groups. Through the combination of variable weight value (VIP), variation multiple (FC), and differential (p) analyses, the significant differential lipids diacylglycerols (DAGs) were screened out. Further quantitative targeted lipidomic analyses of these DAGs in the rat brain tissue and plasma supported the notion that DAG 47:1 could be used as a potential biomarker to study brain injury induced by heavy ion irradiation.

Serum Metabonomics of Rats Irradiated by Low-Dose Γ-Rays

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of low-dose γ-rays on the metabolites in rat serum. Methods Sixteen healthy male SD rats were randomly divided into control group and irradiated group (n=8). The rats in irradiated group were irradiated by 60Co γ-rays with a dose rate of 72mGy/h for 7 days (1 hour per day). At the 7th day after irradiation, blood samples were taken from abdominal aorta to obtain the serum. The metabolic fingerprints of serum were obtained from the two groups of rats, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal signal correction-partial least squares (OSC-PLS) method were used for pattern recognition, and the difference in metabolite profile between two groups was identified by SIMCA-P software. Results The rat serum 1H NMR spectra revealed a significant difference between control group and irradiated group, the OSC-PLS plots of the serum samples presented marked clustering between two groups. Compared with the control group, the content of lipid, glucose, creatine, glycine/glucose, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, very low density lipoprotein/low density lipoprotein and unsaturated fatty acid increased, while the content of lactic acid, threonine/lipid, alanine, N-acetyl glycoprotein 1, N-acetyl glycoprotein 2, saturated fatty acid and phosphatidyl choline decreased in irradiated group. Conclusion Irradiation with low-dose γ-ray could induce changes in metabolites in rat serum, concerning mainly immune function, energy metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and lipid metabolism. Effects of γ-Irradiated Fats on Plasma Lipid Concentrations and Hepatic Cholesterol Metabolism in Rats

Abstract:Currently, there is a growing need for food irradiation that is effective in food preservation and quality improvement. Accordingly, this study was designed to observe the effects of gamma-irradiated dietary fat on plasma lipid concentrations and hepatic cholesterol metabolism in rats. Male rats were fed 5-kGy-gamma-irradiated beef tallow (gammaBT), corn oil (gammaCO), perilla oil (gammaPO), and nonirradiated fats (BT, CO, and PO) for 6 weeks. The gamma-irradiated fat feeding did not affect the plasma lipid concentrations. However, the hepatic cholesterol content was significantly higher in the rats fed gamma-CO as compared with the rats fed nonirradiated CO (40.0 vs. 28.2 mg/g liver). The hepatic HMG-CoA (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A) reductase activities were not significantly different between the controls and the gamma-irradiated fat fed groups. However, the hepatic ACAT (acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase) activity was significantly lower in the gammaPO group as compared with its control group (138.2 vs. 404.5 pmol min(-1) mg(-1)). Among the nonirradiated groups, the ACAT activities of the CO and PO groups were higher than that of the BT group. The amounts of coprostanone, cholesterol, and total fecal neutral sterol were significantly higher in the gammaPO group as compared with the other groups. These results indicate that although slight changes in the lipid metabolism were observed as a result of 5-kGy-gamma-irradiated fat feeding, they were relative to the fat type and had no harmful consequences.

Near-infrared heat lamp therapeutic effect on paraoxonase 1 and myeloperoxidase as potential biomarkers of redox state changes induced by γ-irradiation in albino rats

Abstract:Infrared radiation has a potential therapeutic effect in some diseases. The aim of this study was to estimate the therapeutic role of near infrared heat lamp (NIRHL) on the variations of the activity of paraoxonase 1 (PON1) and myeloperoxidase (MPO), in relation to lipid disorders, associated with oxidative stress in rats gamma-irradiated. In addition, study the effect of the duration of NIRHL treatment. Animals were divided into six groups. The results revealed that irradiated rats treated with NIRHL 20 min/once/day showed positive modulation of PON1 and MPO linked to significant improvement of lipid disorders evidenced by lower triglycerides, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), oxidized low density lipoprotein cholesterol (oxLDL-C) and higher density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) as well as significant amelioration of redox state, manifested by markedly increase of glutathione (GSH) content, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) associated with a noticeable decrease of pro-inflammatory cytokines. (TNF-α, IL-1 beta and IL-6), nitric oxide (NO), nitric oxide synthase (NOs), malondialdehyde (MDA), compared to irradiated rats. The results showed also that the NIRHL treatment for 20 min/twice/day had negative effects on the previous parameters and on the behavior of rats such as itching, irritability, dyspnea and death in normal as well as, irradiated rats. In conclusion, the results in this study show that NIRHL therapy for a short time can effectively prevent the lipid disorders induced by radiation through the positive modulation mechanism of PON1 and MPO enzymes and improvement of oxidative stress.
[The effect of long-term external ionizing radiation on the functional activity of rat thyroid under enhanced potassium iodide consumption]

Abstract:The study was devoted to the effect of long-term (20 days) external ionizing radiation at a dose of 0.5 Gy on the iodide metabolism in the rat thyroid under supplementation of high iodine doses (10 daily KI doses). It was found that the potassium iodide administration partially prevented the effects of a post radiation decrease of serum thyroid hormone levels (the level of T4 was normal and that of T3 was 77.4% of the controls). After the supplementation of 10 daily iodide doses, the rat thyroid tissue showed the most pronounced increase in the levels of total, free and protein-bound iodide compared to the groups of animals consuming normal and elevated KI doses. Pronounced inhibition of thyroid peroxidase activity (3.1-fold) was noted in the same group. The data obtained indicate a radiation-induced activation of iodide uptake during its enhanced supplementation and disturbed iodide enzymatic oxidation and organification.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the effects of Gamma ray irradiated blood on the enzyme activities of serum antioxidases.Method:Twenty units of whole blood were irradiated by γ-ray at a dose of 1Gy.The absorption dose rate was 17 Gy/min.The enzyme activities of serum superoxide dismutase(SOD),glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px),glutathione reductase(GR),catalase(CAT)were detected before irradiation and 1 h,2 h after irradiation respectively.Result:One hour after irradiation,the enzyme activities of serum SOD,GSH-Px,GR and CAT were higher than those of pre-radiation(P<0.01).Two hours after radiation,enzyme activities of all antioxidases were higher than those of one hour after radiation,except SOD(P<0.01).Conclusion:Gamma ray irradiation at low dose can obviously enhance the enzyme activities of serum antioxidases,therefore enhance defence reaction of anti free radical.
The Effect of Gamma Ray Radiation at a Low Dose on Human Red Blood Cell Immune Function and Activities of Serum Antioxidative Enzymes

Abstract:Objective: To observe the effects of γ ray radiation at a low dose on human red blood cell (RBC) immune function and activities of serum antioxidative enzymes. Methods: Ten unit whole blood were radiated by γ ray. The radiation dosage was one gray. The RBC C3b receptor rosette (RBC-C3bRR), RBC immune complex rosette (RBC-ICR), rate of tumor-red cell rosette (RTRR) and the enzymatic activities of serum superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px), glutathione reductase(GR) and catalase were detected before radiation and 1 h, 2 h after radiation respectively. Results: After radiation, the RBC-C3bR and RTRR were higher than that of pre-radiation (P < 0.05), but the RBC-ICR hasn't obvious change in compare with that of pre-radiation (P > 0.05). One hour after radiation, the activities of SOD, GSH-Px, GR and CAT were obviously higher than that of pre-radiation(P < 0.01). In two hours after radiation, All enzymatic activity were higher than that of one hour after radiation except SOD(P < 0.01) Conclusions: Gamma ray irradiation can enhance the erythrocyte immune function and enhance the activities of antioxdative enzymes. That is to say, it can induce the hormesis of erythrocyte immune and anti-oxidatiion enzyme.

Abstract:The study aimed to investigate late radiation-induced changes in the histology, ultrastructure, and activity of lysosomal enzymes in mouse liver exposed to ionizing radiation. The experiment was conducted on C57BL/6J male mice whose distal part of the liver was exposed occasionally to single doses of radiation (6 MV photons) during targeted heart irradiation; estimated doses delivered to analyzed tissue were 0.025 Gy, 0.25 Gy, 1 Gy, and 2 Gy. Tissues were collected 40 weeks after irradiation. We have observed that late effects of radiation have an adaptive nature and their intensity was dose-dependent. Morphological changes in hepatocytes included an increased number of primary lysosomes and autophagic vacuoles, which were visible in tissues irradiated with 0.25 Gy and higher doses. On the other hand, a significant increase in the activity of lysosomal hydrolases was observed only in tissues exposed to 2 Gy. The etiology of these changes may be multifactorial and result, among others, from unintentional irradiation of the distal part of the liver and/or functional interaction of the liver with an irradiated heart. In conclusion, we confirmed the presence of late dose-dependent ultrastructural and biochemical changes in mouse hepatocytes after liver irradiation in vivo.

Preliminary study on effects of 200 mW/cm2 microwave radiation on damage of the oxidation reduction system in rats

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of high power microwave radiation on the damage of oxidation reduction system in rats.Methods Thirty-six specific pathogen free adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into control group , low power and high power microwave groups , with 12 rats in each group , the microwave groups were treated with 100 and 200 mW/cm2 microwave radiation respectively for 10 minutes, while no microwave radiation was given to control group .After the end of the experiment , the plasma levels of superoxide free radical anion ( O2-· ) , superoxide dismutase ( SOD ) , catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), nitricoxide (NO) and nitricoxide synthase ( NOS) in the rats were detected .Results The O2-· levels in low power microwave group were higher than those of the control [ ( 169.85 ±15.98 ) vs ( 102.17 ±17.38 ) U/L, P<0.01 ] .The O2-· levels in high power microwave group were higher than those of the control group and low power microwave group [(290.35 ±19.21) vs (102.17 ±17.38) U/L, (290.35 ±19.21) vs (169.85 ±15.98) U/L, P<0.01].The plasma levels of CAT, GSH and NOS in high power microwave group were lower than those of the control group respectively [(3.28 ±2.07) ×103 vs (5.10 ± 2.15) ×103 U/L, (1.00 ±0.54) vs (2.04 ±0.28) mg/L, (15.18 ±3.14) ×103 vs (17.23 ±3.62) ×103 U/L, P<0.05].And the GSH-Px level in high power microwave group was higher than that of the control [(1 207.54 ±277.16) vs (1 040.82 ±259.54) U, P<0.05].No statistical significance was found in the plasma levels of SOD , MDA and NO in rats of the 3 groups (P>0.05).Conclusion High power microwave radiation could lead to the increase of O 2-· and GSH-Px levels, and the reduce of CAT, NOS and GSH levels.The change of oxidation reduction system may be an important reason for the microwave radiation damage .
Immuno-Biochemical Impacts of Gamma Irradiation in Male Rats: A Dose-Response Study

Abstract:During radiotherapy, immune-modulatory effects of radiation doses should be taken into consideration, not only the anti-tumor radiation effects. Thus, our study aimed to study how γ-radiation modulates immune response in comparison to common immune-suppressive/stimulant agents. Animals were divided into two groups. Category A received Echinacea purpura extract (EP) or irradiated at low radiation doses 0, .25 or .5 Gray (Gy), whereas Category B received cyclophosphamide (CP) or irradiated at high radiation doses 1, 2, or 5 Gy. Serum levels of immunological mediators interleukin-10 (IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), as well as redox-markers malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO), hemoglobin (Hgb), white and red blood cells (WBCs, RBCs), and platelet counts were assessed following irradiation. Of the immune-stimulant category, .25 Gy dose offered EP-comparable effects in TNF-α, RBCs, Hgb, and platelet counts cases. As for the immune-suppressive category; 5 Gy irradiation dose induced inflammatory/immunosuppressive responses indicated (rise in NO, TNF-α, and IL-10), and an oxidative stress status (increase in serum MDA). However, 5 Gy γ-irradiation was not observed, herein, as a single immunosuppressive agent. To conclude, during radiotherapy, immunological impact(s) of the used radiation doses should be optimized and followed-up closely to assess the risk/benefit of their usage.

Abstract:A comparative in vivo study of the effects of ionizing radiation (accelerated protons) and visible light (400–700 nm) on the retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) of the mouse eye was carried out. Using the methods of fluorescence spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we analyzed the relative composition of retinoids in chloroform extracts obtained from the retinas and RPEs immediately after exposure of animals to various types of radiation and 4.5 months after they were exposed and maintained under standard conditions throughout the period. The fluorescent properties of chloroform extracts were shown to change upon exposure to various types of radiation. This fact indicates the accumulation of retinoid oxidation and degradation products in the retina and RPE. The data from fluorescence and HPLC analyses of retinoids indicate that when exposed to ionizing radiation, retinoid oxidation processes similar to photooxidation occur. Both ionizing radiation and high-intensity visible light have been shown to be characterized by long-term effects. The action of any type of radiation is assumed to activate the mechanism of enhanced reactive oxygen species production, resulting in a long-term damaging effect.
