Abstract:Ce1-xMgxCo3 are promising candidates for the permanent magnets since they can show ferromagnetism and large anisotropy by substituting Mg for Ce in a paramagnetic CeCo3 compound. In this work, a room-temperature ferromagnetism with a second-order magnetic phase transition is observed in the Ce0.65Mg0.35Co3 (CMC) compound prepared by a cold crucible levitation melting method. Based on the DC magnetization data, the critical phenomenon around the phase transition point (similar to 308K) in CMC is investigated and the critical exponents beta for spontaneous magnetization, gamma for susceptibility and delta for critical isothermal magnetization are determined independently by three different data processing techniques including the modified Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fisher plot, and critical isotherm analysis. It is noteworthy that the magnetizations obey the scaling equation, indicating that the critical parameters including T-c, beta, gamma and delta are reliable and self-consistent. The calculation of spin interaction with the obtained critical exponents further suggests a long-range ferromagnetic coupling with J(r) similar to r(-4.622) in CMC. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2020

Abstract:The measurements on magnetization (M), resistivity (rho) and specific heat (C) were carried out for the ferromagnetic CeTi1-x NixGe3 (0.0 <= x <= 0.45) system. It was found that the Curie temperature, T-C, decreases with increasing Ni content, x, and reaches zero kelvin near a critical content x(cr) = 0.44. A new phase diagram is constructed based on these measurements. The non-Fermi liquid (nFL) behavior in rho(T), and log(T-0/T) relationship in C/T in the samples near xcr, demonstrate that strong spin fluctuation emerges in these samples, indicating that they are near a quantum critical point (QCP). Our results indicate that CeTi1-x NixGe3 may provide another platform to study exotic quantum phenomena near ferromagnetic QCP.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic (FM) systems have attracted interest because a variety of novel phases can arise near a quantum critical point (QCP) where the FM order is suppressed to zero temperature. The Kondo lattice compound CePtAl4Si2 is a candidate FM quantum critical material that becomes the FM state below T-c = 3.7 K, but the possibility of the quantum criticality has yet to be studied. Here, we report a comprehensive temperature-pressure phase diagram of CePtAl4Si2 using a systematic transport investigation. The FM compound CePtAl4Si2 goes through three distinct ground states under pressure. In the low-pressure FM state, T-c is gradually suppressed by pressure and a smooth extrapolation of Tc(P) reaches zero temperature at a critical pressure of 7.0 GPa. However, the suppression of T-c is interrupted by the appearance of another crossover temperature T* in the intermediate pressure range of 5.4-11.7 GPa, which shows a nonmonotonic pressure dependence. A fully coherent Kondo screened state is observed in the high-pressure regime. These results suggest that a FM QCP is avoided under pressure in the disordered Kondo system CePtAl4Si2.

Abstract:Conventional, thermally driven continuous phase transitions are described by universal critical behavior that is independent of the specific microscopic details of a material. However, many current studies focus on materials that exhibit quantum-driven continuous phase transitions (quantum critical points, or QCPs) at absolute zero temperature. The classification of such QCPs and the question of whether they show universal behavior remain open issues. Here we report measurements of heat capacity and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations at low temperatures across a field-induced antiferromagnetic QCP (Bc0 ≈ 50 T) in the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn5. A sharp, magnetic-field-induced change in Fermi surface is detected both in the dHvA effect and Hall resistivity at B0* ≈ 30 T, well inside the antiferromagnetic phase. Comparisons with band-structure calculations and properties of isostructural CeCoIn5 suggest that the Fermi-surface change at B0* is associated with a localized-to-itinerant transition of the Ce-4f electrons in CeRhIn5. Taken in conjunction with pressure experiments, our results demonstrate that at least two distinct classes of QCP are observable in CeRhIn5, a significant step toward the derivation of a universal phase diagram for QCPs.

Abstract:Clarification of magnetic phase transition nature and critical behavior is an essential step in the development of new magnetic functional materials. In this work, we studied critical properties of intermetallic compound (Ce0.65Pr0.35)2Co7 by bulk dc magnetization around the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition. It exhibits a second-order magnetic phase transition with T C = 214 K. Critical exponents β = 0.546(5) and γ = 1.054(5) are obtained by the modified Arrott plot, whereas δ = 2.843 is obtained by a critical isotherm analysis at T C . These critical exponents not only obey the Widom relation δ = 1 + γ / β , but also collapse the isothermal magnetization M-H-T data into two branches below and above T C following the single scaling equation M(H, ε ) = ε β f ± (H/ ε β + γ ). Although the obtained exponents are close to the theoretical values of mean-field model, a noticeable deviation unable to be ignored, indicating the existence of localized magnetic interaction which competes with a long-range ferromagnetic state. Our results will establish a sound theoretical basis for understanding the complex magnetic interaction in the light rare earths ternary alloy.

Abstract:CeIn3, a prototypical antiferromagnet, is an ideal candidate for investigating the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity, as superconductivity is induced as the magnetic transition temperature (T-N) is lowered to 0 K by applying pressure. When La is substituted for Ce, T-N of CeIn3 decreases to 0 K owing to the Ce dilution effects, thereby providing an alternative route to the zero-temperature quantum phase transition. In this study, we report a combinatorial approach to gain access to the critical point by applying external pressure to 20% La-doped CeIn3. Electrical resistivity measurements of La0.2Ce0.8In3 show that the T-N of 8.4 K at 1 bar is gradually suppressed under pressure and can be extrapolated to 0 K at approximately 2.47 GPa, thereby showing a similar pressure dependence of T-N as shown by undoped CeIn3. The kink-like feature in resistivity at T-N of CeIn3 changed to an obvious jump in the doped compound for pressures higher than 1.64 GPa, indicating depletion in the carrier density due to a gap opening. AC calorimetry measurements under applied pressure show that the size of the specific heat jump at T-N decreases with increasing pressure, but any signatures associated with the gap opening are not obvious, suggesting that the pressure-induced kink-to-jump change at T-N in the resistivity is not a phase transition, but rather a gradual crossover. The low-temperature specific heat divided by temperature, C/T, does not strongly diverge with decreasing temperature, but is almost saturated near the projected quantum critical point, which can be attributed to a weak enhancement in the effective mass up to 2.6 GPa.

Abstract:We report the temperature-pressure (T - P) phase diagram of CePt2In7 single crystals, especially the pressure evolution of the antiferromagnetic order and the emergence of superconductivity, which have been studied by electrical resistivity and ac calorimetry under nearly hydrostatic environments. Compared with its polycrystalline counterpart, bulk superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetism in a much narrower pressure region. The possible existence of textured superconductivity and local quantum criticality also are observed in CePt2In7, exhibiting a remarkable similarity with CeRhIn5.

Abstract:Zero-field In-115-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been used to study single crystals of CePt2In7, which is a heavy-fermion antiferromagnet with a Neel temperature (T-N) of 5.2 K at ambient pressure. The NMR spectra under zero field near the 3 nu(Q) line of the orthorhombic In(3) sites are taken at 1.6 K under hydrostatic conditions at ambient pressure and 2.4 GPa. These data reveal the coexistence of commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders at ambient pressure and that the commensurate ordering is stabilized by increasing pressures. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates (1/T-1) for In(3) sites indicate the localized nature of f electrons far above T-N. The values of 1/T-1 in the paramagnetic state decrease by applying pressure. In contrast, the residual values of 1/T-1 much below T-N increase by pressure.

Abstract:The easily tuned balance among competing interactions in Kondo-lattice metals allows access to a zero-temperature, continuous transition between magnetically ordered and disordered phases, a quantum-critical point (QCP). Indeed, these highly correlated electron materials are prototypes for discovering and exploring quantum-critical states. Theoretical models proposed to account for the strange thermodynamic and electrical transport properties that emerge around the QCP of a Kondo lattice assume the presence of an indefinitely large number of itinerant charge carriers. Here, we report a systematic transport and thermodynamic investigation of the Kondo-lattice system CeNi_2-δAs_2 (δ0.28) as its antiferromagnetic order is tuned by pressure and magnetic field to zero-temperature boundaries. These experiments show that the very small but finite carrier density of ∼0.032 e^-/f.u. in CeNi_2-δAs_2 leads to unexpected transport signatures of quantum criticality and the delayed development of a fully coherent Kondo lattice state with decreasing temperature. The small carrier density and associated semi-metallicity of this Kondo-lattice material favor an unconventional, local-moment type of quantum criticality and raise the specter of Nozières exhaustion idea that an insufficient number of conduction-electron spins to separately screen local moments requires collective Kondo screening.

Abstract:The measurements on temperature dependences of magnetic susceptibility chi (T), specific heat C (T), and electrical resistivity rho (T) were carried out for the antiferromagnetic (AFM) (Ce1-xLax)(2)Ir3Ge5 (0 <= x <= 0.66) system. It was found that the Neel temperature T-N decreases with increasing La content x, and reaches 0 K near a critical content x(cr) = 0.6. A new phase diagram was constructed based on these measurements. A non-Fermi liquid behavior in rho (T) and a log T relationship in C (T) were found in the samples near x(cr), indicating them to be near an AFM quantum critical point (QCP) with strong spin fluctuation. Our finding indicates that (Ce1-xLax)(2)Ir3Ge5 may be a new platform to search for unconventional superconductivity.

Abstract:Using novel instrumentation to combine extreme conditions of intense pulsed magnetic field up to 60~T and high pressure up to 4~GPa, we have established the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field - pressure - temperature phase diagram of a pure stoichiometric heavy-fermion antiferromagnet (CeRh$_2$Si$_2$). We find a temperature- and pressure-dependent decoupling of the critical and pseudo-metamagnetic fields, at the borderlines of antiferromagnetism and strongly-correlated paramagnetism. This 3D phase diagram is representative of a class of heavy-fermion Ising antiferromagnets, where long-range magnetic ordering is decoupled from a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility. The combination of extreme conditions enabled us to characterize different quantum phase transitions, where peculiar quantum critical properties are revealed. The interest to couple the effects of magnetic field and pressure on quantum-critical correlated-electron systems is stressed.

Abstract:Low temperature magnetic and thermal (C_m) properties of the ferromagnetic (FM) alloys Ce_2.15 (Pd_1-x Rh_x)_1.95 In_0.9 were investigated in order to explore the possibility for tuning a quantum critical point (QCP) by doping Pd with Rh. As expected, the magnetic transition observed at T = 4.1K in the parent alloy decreases with increasing Rh concentration. Nevertheless it splits into two transitions, the upper being antiferromagnetic (AF) whereas the lower FM. The AF phase boundary extrapolates to T_N = 0 for x_cr ~ 0.65 whereas the first order FM transition vanishes at x ~ 0.3. The QC character of the T_N => 0 point arises from the divergent T dependence of the tail of C_m/T observed in the x = 0.5 and 0.55 alloys, and the tendency to saturation of the maximum of C_m(T_N)/T as observed in exemplary Ce compounds for T_N => 0. Beyond the critical concentration the unit cell volume deviates from the Vegard's law in coincidence with a strong increase of the Kondo temperature.

Abstract:CeCoSi is an intermetallic antiferromagnet with a very unusual temperature-pressure phase diagram: at ambient pressure it orders below $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 8.8$ K, while application of hydrostatic pressure induces a new magnetically ordered phase with exceptionally high transition temperature of $\sim40$ K at 1.5 GPa. We studied the magnetic properties and the pressure-induced magnetic phase of CeCoSi by means of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and heat capacity measurements. At ambient pressure CeCoSi orders into a simple commensurate AFM structure with a reduced ordered moment of only $m_{\mathrm{Ce}} = 0.37(6)$ $\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$. Specific heat and low-energy INS indicate a significant gap in the low-energy magnon excitation spectrum in the antiferromagnetic phase, with the CEF excitations located above 10 meV. Hydrostatic pressure gradually shifts the energy of the magnon band towards higher energies, and the temperature dependence of the magnons measured at 1.5 GPa is consistent with the phase diagram. Moreover, the CEF excitations are also drastically modified under pressure.

Abstract:The superconducting CeFe1−xCoxAsO (Co=0.1) oxyarsenide with a transition temperature (Tc) 11.4 K has been investigated by in situ high pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. The experiments performed at 10 K up to 6 GPa and at room temperature (RT) up to 55 GPa indicate large anisotropic lattice compression. A pressure induced structural change to a collapsed tetragonal structure is observed above 10 GPa at RT. We report here the enhancement of Tc from 11.4 to 12.3 K with a small increase in pressure up to 0.4 GPa and is first observed in an electron doped Ce-1111 system.
Ce$_{3-x}$Mg$_x$Co$_{9}$: transformation of a Pauli paramagnet into a strong permanent magnet

Abstract:We report on the synthesis of single crystalline and polycrystalline samples of Ce$_{3-x}$Mg$_x$Co$_9$ solid solution ($0\leq x \lesssim 1.4$) and characterization of their structural and magnetic properties. The crystal structure remains rhombohedral in the whole composition range and Mg partially replaces Ce in the 6\textit{c} site of the CeCo$_3$ structure. Ferromagnetism is induced by Mg substitutions starting as low as $x=0.18$ and reaching a Curie temperature as high as $450$\,K for $x=1.35$. Measurements on single crystals with $x=1.34$ and $T_\textrm{C}=440$\,K indicate an axial magnetic anisotropy with the anisotropy field of $6$\,T and a magnetization of $6$\,$\mu_B/$f.u. at $300$\,K. Coercicity is observed in the polycrystalline samples consistent with the observed axial magnetic anisotropy. Our discovery of ferromagnetism with large axial magnetic anisotropy induced by substituting a rare-earth element by Mg is a very promising result in the search of inexpensive permanent-magnet materials and suggests other non-magnetic phases, similar to CeCo$_3$, may also conceal nearby ferromagnetic phases.

Abstract:Effect of vacuum annealing and heating–cooling cycle annealing on the soft magnetic properties at room- and high-temperatures for (Fe0.9Co0.1)72.7Al0.8Si13.5B9Cu1Nb3 alloy was investigated by the temperature dependence of initial permeability (μi-T curves). The crystallization behavior and microstructural evolution of alloy with the increase of annealing temperature were studied by means of differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). After vacuum annealing at 617 °C for 0.5 h, the µi can reach 30,300 and maintain more than 1000 until 640 °C because of larger crystalline volume fraction (Vcry) of 81.9% and smaller intergranular amorphous layer ($\Lambda$) of 0.930 nm, which is more excellent than that of other Fe–Co–Al–Si–B–Cu–Nb alloys annealed at their optimum temperatures. In addition, the crystallized interval temperature (∆Tx) of 158 °C, superior to Fe73.5Si13.5B9Nb3Cu1 and (Fe0.9Co0.1)73.5Si13.5B9Nb3Cu1 alloys ever reported, is conducive to precipitating the bcc α-(Fe,Co,Si) and Fe3(Si,Co,Al) soft magnetic crystalline phases and improving thermostability of alloy.

Abstract:C15 Laves phase intermetallic CeFe2 2 show reduced lattice constant and lower Curie temperature due to a strong 4 f-3d d hybridization. This hybridization is also believed to cause a ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transition in CeFe2 2 under hydrostatic pressure. In this work, we use first-principles calculations to study the magnetic stability of CeFe2 2 under high pressure. With LDA functional, we predict a ferromagnetic-toantiferromagnetic phase transition of CeFe2 2 at 42.5 GPa. We also study how the projected density of states of Ce-4f f and Fe-3d d evolves with pressure. For both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, we find an enhanced hybridization between Ce-4f f and Fe-3d d states which favors antiferromagnetism with the increase of pressure.

Abstract:We investigated the electrical resistivity and heat capacity of 1% Cd-doped CeIrIn5 under hydrostatic pressure up to 2.7 GPa, near where long-range antiferromagnetic order is suppressed and bulk superconductivity suddenly reemerges. The pressure-induced T-c is close to that of pristine CeIrIn5 at 2.7 GPa, and no signatures of a quantum critical point under pressure support a local origin of the antiferromagnetic moments in Cd-CeIrIn5 at ambient pressure. Similarities between superconductors CeIrIn5 and CeCoIn5 in response to Cd substitutions suggest a common magnetic mechanism.
Magnetostructural transition, magnetocaloric effect and critical exponent analysis in Nd(Co0.8Fe0.2)2 alloy

Abstract:In the present study, the magnetostructural transition, magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and critical behavior of Nd(Co0.8Fe0.2)2 alloy in the vicinity of ferromagnetic transition were studied. The Rietveld refinement analysis of in-situ synchrotron XRD patterns reveals that the present alloy crystallizes in the cubic phase (space group Fd 3 ̅ m) at room temperature and undergoes a structural transition to the tetragonal phase (space group I4 1 /amd) below its Curie temperature. Temperature dependent heat capacity measurements under different applied magnetic fields were carried out to investigate the magnetocaloric properties. The maximum magnetic entropy change (ΔS M) of 5.6 J/kgK and relative cooling power (RCP) of 445.7 J/kg are obtained over the wide working temperature range of 82 K under magnetic field change of 5 T. The corresponding adiabatic temperature change (ΔT ad) is evaluated to be 2.9 K under the same magnetic field change. The sample shows metallic behavior with its significant magnetoresistance value of −41.2% around phase transition at magnetic field change of 5 T. These results may make Nd(Co0.8Fe0.2)2 alloy as one of the promising material for refrigeration applications. Moreover, the critical parameters (β, γ, and δ) were deduced independently from the magnetization data by using different techniques such as modified Arrott plot, Kouvel–Fisher method and critical magnetization isotherms. The derived β=0.319, γ =1.214, and δ=4.78 values are found to be consistent with the 3D-Ising class signifying the presence of short-range exchange interactions in this alloy. We have further shown that these exponents follow the M(H, ε)=|(T − T C)/T C | β f±H/|(T − T C)/T C| β+γ scaling equation very well for both the above and below Curie temperature demonstrating that the estimated exponents are unambiguous and are intrinsic to this alloy system.
